I have gone to Bartel's for maintenance on my 2016 Mazda CX5 and they always do a great job. They give you options of what should be done on your car. you can check off on a couple items or just one. First time coming here. Wanted to visit new place to get my car fixed than go through the dealership that I've been really tired of going too. It's really tough to look for and trust mechanics when shopping around or wanting to try someone new. Booked an appointment online and had no issues with the process as well as arriving into Bartel's. The waiting room is small, but clean where it's probably the easiest to hide on your phone. Clean restroom inside too! After waiting for the diagnostics, the staff member brought me into the shop to visually show me the issue with my vehicle and what I was potentially looking at cost and time wise. That little bit of transparency was something I wasn't used too. The staff gave me a complimentary too and from the shop back to my house which was really nice of them. As my car is getting fixed, I'm getting sent video updates of the problems of my car and a professional explanation which was really cool because I absolutely love that level of transparency with the client. An additional, major safety issue was found where I needed a rental car temporarily for the day. After the car was fixed I felt satisfied with the repair. I will say price wise, I would of paid way more at the dealership and are fair here. The service and the friendly service from the staff top notch! My one complaint that I did notch down a star with was that when I got my vehicle back for the first time, I turned the key into the ignition and my car wouldn't start at all mysterious and behaved weirdly for an hour. I have had my vehicle back for a few weeks and I haven't had an issue with it at all, so it seems like it was a one time thing thankfully. read more

Dishonest business! I had a very unpleasant experience with them today. I spoke to 2 different person in 2 different days. They both confirmed their diagnosis is free of charge and I do NOT have to get the repair done. I drove to them with check engine light on and when I came to their office, they said diagnosis is $99. Then he said if one of us told you its for free, then we won't charge you for it. They said they can diagnose today and repair tomorrow, I have to drop off the car. I only wanted to get diagnosis done today and come for repair another day. They refused! They said I have to get repair done with them if they diagnose it. They refused to do diagnosis alone. I offered to pay for diagnosis but they refused that as well. I was forced to get the repair done with them. All the other mechanics say they charge for diagnosis but if i get it repaired with them, it goes towards the repair, very transparent. They could have just said that. However this business, tricked me into the same thing by pulling me in, promising free diagnostic. My time is valuable, I didn't appreciate they are being shady and wasting my time. Don't recommend this place to anyone! read more

Do not go here...I paid nearly $3000. for a 100k tune-up. I got new plugs and wires replaced..and that's all. They didn't change any hoses or belts, they didn't even change the oil and the filter. The worst thing was that the night I brought it home, there was a three foot wide puddle of transmission fluid on my garage floor. I called and they told me to drive it back to them with a massive fluid leak(which very well could have blown up my transmission. They refused to come tow it or give me any kind of refund. If you want your car sabotaged,,go to this place. read more

I said yes I know that's our next fix but today I need just an oil change. tried pushing me to get new tires, told them to take the car off the lift. went down the street and got 4 new tires and an oil change. never again will I go here. exact reason most people put off bringing their vehicles into shops. read more

Updated from 5 stars to 1 star. Horrible experience here. I asked for my vehicle to get an inspection as it was making a popping and clicking noise and needs an alignment. Found I had a bad wheel bearing okay. Asked if the noise was still present and they stated no. Didn't even make it out of the parking lot with the same noise back again. Drove for 2 seconds with a service advisor to show the noise and asked if they really took my car for a drive after getting the work done. "Yes sir". Okay turns out to be a CV axel was broken. Okay repair that and I specifically asked if the car was aligned again and they states yes. Go to pick up my car again and it's was 100% out of alignment. So my car needed "3" alignments when a thorough inspection would have shown other issues before getting the alignment. If anyone has any places that actually hire techs that actually care please send them my way. read more

I took my truck in for an oil change. I normally go to the dealer, but I was in a bit of a pinch and in a hurry to get it done. About 30 minutes after I dropped it off, they called to say that my serpentine belt was "showing signs of severe wear and is very close to failing." They sent a narrated video of the belt in operation, with dire warnings of how if it failed on the road, I would be stranded and unable to run the heat without overheating the truck and causing more damage. As I have been "little lady-ed" before, I took it to my usual mechanic who inspected it and it found it to be 100% fine and did not recommend service at this time. Quite a different story. In addition, Bartels strongly recommended a transmission fluid change without asking me when it was last done. I'm well within Honda's recommendation, and confirmed that with my mechanic. It's too bad Bartel's isn't more careful with their recommendations and resorts to scare tactics to drum up business. Needless to say, I won't be going back. read more

Dropped my car off to Bartel's overnight. Called the next day and spoke with Matt and he seemed to be a great guy. Bartel's did their inspection and wanted to charge me $4000 for repairs. Me thinking this place was reputable and the damage was greater than my own visual knowledge agreed to it initially. However my wife and I spoke with a mechanic who had their shop in Chicago Heights. Based on the issues Bartel said was wrong provided and estimated $1000 for parts and labor before putting their own eyes on it. Anything over was highway robbery. I immediately pulled my car out the shop and had it towed to the new shop. But not before being charged $370 for labor. I guess they began disassembly and had to put it back together. However no work was performed. To me this seemed to include steps needed to do the Free inspection. When my wife went to the car to take some items out before getting towed she reported it was sitting in the lot with the lights on in the car. Luckily we came or the car battery would've drained as the tow truck wasn't available until the next day. Long story short turns out the other shop only charged me $900 instead of the quoted $1000. A far cry from the $4000 I was quoted at Bartels. I also received a warranty from the shop on the work they performed. They even mention that the strut Bartel said that needed to be repaired wasn't necessary. Which I'm sure was all apart of the quote to hike up the price. The new ship also got my car back up and running a day sooner than Bartels told me. So not only was Bartels more expensive but slower. My advice although the people seem nice they are the sharks of the old days preying on the desperate and uniformed. Luckily I had the resources to avoid this place. My advice is to get multiple quotes before choosing to do businesses here no matter how bad. Me towing the car was only $225 on top of the $900. I saved nearly $2800 avoiding this place. Those pictures may seem like they are there for your benefit but to the untrained eye it's all part of their scam. read more

I've been going to Bartels for a while now and every time I go, it's great. I mainly go for my oil checks and tire rotations but this past time I went for a more urgent need. There was water on the floor of the drivers side but still made its way to the floor in the back and passenger side. I recently had it checked for the A/C drain somewhere else and was told it was clogged and that it was unclogged after fixing it. Only to find out a couple days later, I was still having water. Took my car to Bartels and they kept me updated the entire time. Sent me pictures and videos and ran me through everything that was going on. AMAZING. Now, my car is actually fixed. The staff is great and friendly. It's an auto shop that I don't get nervous going to. read more

I brought my 2016 Ford F150 into Bartel's to have an alignment after I replaced the upper and lower control arms. When the mechanic tighten the lower control arm bolt they did not take there time and spun the cam-bolt retainer clips bending them and leaving them out of place. Had they hand tightened the lower control arm bolts snug first then held the back of the cam bolts with a wrench this would have not of happened. This is just plan sloppy work and not what you'd expect from a professional mechanic. read more

Update from previous review this past Sunday. I just noticed the "next oil change due" sticker, that they originally forgot to place in windshield, now I guess my very high mileage vehicle has magic oil and doesn't need to be changed for over a year! Never an apology, less than 1/2 the job done and more expensive than they have ever been. I always give my business to family owned establishments, this is an example of business is so good, they could care less about overall customer service. I have been patronizing this Bartels for several years and I always assumed that I was getting honest service. Until now. I stopped in to have them look at my tire, which had a nail in it and was leaking air. One of the men went out to check it , came back and said it was not repairable, but he could sell me a new one for $200.00. Not having the money, I left and went to Walmart. They looked at it and said " no problem." It was fixed in 30 minutes for $15.00! My trust in Bartels is completely gone and I now wonder how many other unnecessary services I had performed on my vehicles over the years because I believed what they told me! I came in for a synthetic oil change and tire rotation which cost me over $100. I should have gone to Midas. A coupon for $19.58 drew me in, and I knew that synthetic would be extra, but instead the guys deducted $10. During the visit they noted that I had a back bulb out which I thought would be an easy inexpensive fix. However, the removal of license plate and replacement bulb cost me $20.50. Seriously??!! I now realize this was back breaking labor and should have asked for an estimate. It felt as though everything was an upcharge. We tried Bartel's in Oswego many years ago and was not happy back then and still not happy today. Will never return to Bartel's for any type of service on our vehicles. read more

These guys are horrible. I've had two incidents with these guys: In one case, they screwed up installation of a battery. When they installed the battery, they did it wrong so part of the battery holder was touching another piece of metal incorrectly and caused a short. This caused enough heat to melt part of the battery holder and give me electrical issues until a dealer diagnosed it -- and the part that melted cost me $134 to replace. In another case, I had an appointment for an oil change. I showed up and they made me wait over an hour to get an oil change. If I make an appointment, I show up, and no one else is there, why should I wait over an hour? If you hate your car and want it to die, bring it to Bartel's. read more

Update 2 After 8 months, the control arm that was recommended for me to change is still in full functioning form. It was reccomended for me to fix in a hurry because it didnt have much time left. I brought my car there on a whim, they quoted me $750 for the repair that I needed. A quick Google search showed that it shouldn't be that much so I called around and had it fixed for just under $400 elsewhere. Can't speak for the services obviously I didn't use them, but clearly they price gouge. Everyone was super nice and friendly but they lost my business forever. read more

Here's an update to my review by the manager or owner or whoever his comment that is they obviously didn't read what I said I wasn't mad about the price they were trying to charge me for a battery I was mad that they were trying to sell me something over $100 that was unnecessary for my car thinking I would just trust them and have it installed because they said I needed it but I know I didn't need it they just wanted to make a quick buck off me!!! It would've been one thing if I actually needed a battery yeah that's cool you price match but I don't even need one in the first place Came here for a simple oil change it's several hours later, so far so good. Only thing I didn't like is because I had the word FEMALE written on my four head that they could try and upsell me a bunch of stuff that I didn't need for my car. They tried to tell me that I needed a new battery that would cost $179! Yikes! First off I could get a new decent battery for $89-$100 NOT $179 And second off my car is not driving slow, and my car started every time I went to start it, so no I do not need a new battery but thanks for trying to make almost 200 on me for a part that I didn't need but this is one smart female! read more

The staff is nice & they are pretty good at taking care of minor repairs, like oil changes. The reason I'm giving a 1 star review is because I've had to go back multiple times for the same issues. My Jeep was making some weird noises, which I assumed it was due to the brakes & rotors. I take it in & they said they took care of it. I had to come back again because it continued to make the same noise. They tell me that it's a different brake making that noise. They say they took care of it, & not even a week later I'm still hearing the same noises. I don't mind paying the money. If something needs to be fixed, then it needs to be fixed. My issue is that they obviously are not doing the job correctly & they don't pay attention. I paid over 1K in repairs & I still have the same issues that I did before I went. I wouldn't mind letting them do all four brakes at once, but I'm obviously not the mechanic. Im sure if I went back, they would just make another excuse that it's a different brake this time.I'm just going to assume they aren't doing the work right since the noise continues to come from the same brake pad they claimed to have fixed. I PICKED up my car and noticed a big crack in windshield down the road, went back and they start showing me videos on the phone saying you can't see a crack while it was here.... but when I returned Sean had to position himself to get a visible pic from 2 feet... Now there also saying that I may have broken it 3 days earlier changing my battery, it just took a while to appear!!!! And I love the oil change packages they offer! I have been using synthetic oil in my car for years and I appreciate they offer a 5 oil change package at a discounted rate. The customer service here is condescending, and the blatant attempts to upsell on unnecessary repairs is worthy of an intense eye roll. I went in for an oil change since I had a $20 coupon. The oil change took maybe 45 minutes. I have no complaints about this service. While waiting, a guy came into the waiting area to give me a laundry list ($500 or more) of repairs that "needed attention," and he told me that I would need a new battery soon. When I checked out, ghe girl at the counter made it a point to dangle my keys (and heavy Juicy Couture keychain) in front of me (don't judge). She warned me about the effect of heavy keychains on the starter. Let's see, if I were eating a cheeseburger at a restaurant, would the waitress warn me of clogged arteries? No. Oh and she had to mention that she used to work at Juicy Couture. As if this matters. After I left, I went to my usual mechanic, my dad, who tested the battery and told me Bartel's was full of shit! He tested the battery himself and said it would last at least another year. All I really need is a transmission and power steering flush, something that will cost far less than $100. I gave it 2 stars because my husband also had an oil change here. He didn't have any complaints. But I wouldn't go back, even for a free oil change. read more

Came In to get an oil change. Overall very clean facility and good customer service. $23 and some change with taxes included is not bad at all! Having said that, some of the reviews don't make sense to me here. When you go to the doctors office they measure all potential issues with your health. Not just the issue you see on the surface. Everyone should, to some degree, be cognizant of such mechanicals. Whether this shop or any other one out there, I would expect to some degree for them to point out potential problems to me that can eventually get serious. If you don't like that go somewhere else but don't review someone negatively because their pointing out neglected flaws in your car and yes, your potential neglect does also equate to capital gains for such businesses. learn to do it yourself if you don't want to pay for shop prices. Overall great place to get an oil change done (I can't speak on other services) just be sure to call in to make an appointment... They proposed a 90 min wait so I scheduled and went back...this time out of there in twenty min on scheduled time. read more

I have had my car serviced twice here for two separate issues. In both cases I was amazed at the speed of the services provided. The first time was for a replacement transmission. They worked with my carmax warranty for coverage, parts and even a rental. The second time was for sensor and shock absorbers. Both experiences left me surprised at how quickly they got my car back to me. Excellent service and professionalism. I will be going back (hopefully no time soon amiright?) I was looking for a place to get my oil changed that was on my way home. Drove past and decided to call to make an appt. The man that answered was very nice and friendly. I showed up and he told me they were a family business, which I love to support, and told me what they do. He was very informative. This is the first time as a woman getting my oil changed I didn't feel like they were trying to rip me off or sell me a whole bunch of crap. Used to go here all the time when I had my old car. Great customer service and decent prices.

I stopped by this shop to drop off my car because I needed to have an evap leak identified in my car. I had done everything I could on my own to fix it myself but ultimately I lacked the machine that i needed to find the leak or failed part. I was charged a fair price for the diagnosis. $100. I was called back with the diagnosis of a failed vent solenoid, along with a bad 02 sensor. I inquired on the cost to fix these as items because if it was reasonable I would have them do it to save myself time. I was quoted a price of just below $800 to replace both items. A quick search and i found then 02 sensor for $70 from auto-zone. And the vent valve for $ 65 from rock auto. $135 total in parts and I fixed it myself. Took me total two hours. I can understand that labor is not cheap but wanting an extra $670 in labor is outrageous. Perhaps not trying to gouge so much on labor would have made me do business with you. Finally my work order that had the CEL CODES incorrectly stating the wrong sensor. Actual code was " P1041 bank one sensor TWO" when your shop wrote " bank one sensor ONE". Unacceptable for a shop that charges $100 an hour. I won't be back. read more

AWESOME CUSTOMER SERVICE. Took our new (old) van in for a once over before our upcoming road trip. Phil offered us a ride home after dropping off the car. They go out of their way right off the bat to win your return service. They did a thorough inspection and contacted us frequently throughout the day for updates and to discuss their findings. They began work on the car immediately and the car was done within 8 hours. Upon arriving home, my husband had some questions on their findings. He contacted their office for clarification. The technician who had serviced the car was no longer there, but we were told that he would contact us tomorrow morning when he was back in the office. Did I mention their top notch customer service? :) Their hours are wonderful. They offer pick up / drop off service. They send reminders for work / routine maintenance on your car. Their employees are polite and courteous. Their prices are competitive. We have found our new mechanic(s)! After our recent experiences with poor customer service while repairing my mother's car at another facility - we will never use another garage. Bartel's is #1. read more
