The call to the vet was a great experience. The lady that I spoke with was nice and empathetic when responding to my questions. Check in was easy. Dr. Lawson was so gentle and calm with my cat Sadie. She doesn't do good with strangers especially at the vet. Dr. Lawson tried to keep her tone quiet and calm to keep Sadie calm. I took Sadie out of her backpack and she actually let Dr. Lawson pet her! I was so surprised! She was gentle with sadie the whole time. I thanked her for being patient and gentle with her. I brought my eldest cat here fully intending on this being all of my animals new vet as they are fairly conveniently located and allow you to come inside with your pet (as some vets are still curbside only). I had made sure to call beforehand to make the appt and get the quote for the visit. Upon arrival I was greeted by a nice woman with purple hair, I filled out my paperwork and then asked if I should have my husband bring in our kitty yet. They said yes it shouldn't be long so my husband makes his way to the door and as he's opening it for someone exiting, wrestling with the cat carrier, the door, and a mask, he takes a literal single step inside while wrestling with his mask and the other woman at the front takes this as an opportunity to give him an elementary level lesson in when the appropriate time to put on a mask would be and how he should have already had it on before entering... maybe let's consider the specific circumstances to this situation, he did his best and this was just rude. We waited only a couple of minutes to see the doctor who was very sweet. She completed the exam and decided a couple teeth needed to be extracted. This was totally expected as this was the reason for my visit so this did not come as a surprise. What did come as a shock was their completely outrageous quote for surgery and this is the reason for the 2 star review. Honestly they should be ashamed of themselves. There is no way that the average person can afford $2100 for 2 teeth extraction for their cat. Therefore there have to be animals suffering simply because this vet chooses to price gouge people to an extreme that I have never seen before. What they failed to realize is that I have already had 2 other quotes previously (one in Southern California) that are anywhere from 1/4- less than half of their quote. I cannot tell you how upset this makes me that some people and their animals will suffer due to greedy inflated price tactics. This is just wrong. Had appointment made for this past Thursday (booked about 2 weeks out and they had very limited openings), called me hours before my appointment to tell me they had to cancel. Instead of giving me options to reschedule with some flexibility, they informed me they had rescheduled me for Monday morning. I was already having to take time off of work to take her in to her initial appointment, and now I'm going to have to take more time off to get her in Monday morning. They cut him with the clippers in 3 spots! 2 of which needed stitches, yes more than 1! And burned him in several spots! Don't go here! EVER! Ridiculous!!! Update: The tech that did this called me. Apologized profusely! She refunded the fees for everything including meds and collar. She stated that she had been thinking about it all night and had intended to pay for everything by didn't make it to the office before we did. Stopped taking our animals here years ago because of the poor care my dogs were receiving. Not so much the vets but the rest of the staff. Caused injury to my Sheppard's tail when bathing her. Anyway, fast forward to this weekend: planned a trip for the family and needed to board my two dogs. One of which is senior and requires enzymes mixed with her food. With out these enzymes she will have nonstop bloody diarrhea that she has no control over. She gets dehydrated quickly and will be in a substantial amount of pain. We brought a portion of the jar of enzymes with us when we dropped them off, instructed the staff on how much needed to be mixed with the food we also brought. When I picked them up, I was informed that they were not able to give my senior dog the enzymes because it wasn't in the original container. Are you kidding me? Had I been told they needed the original container, we would have brought it. No one said there would be a problem when we handed the container to them. Instead, my dog goes 4 days without her medicine and I'm left with cleaning up her explosive diarrhea. I will be up numerous times throughout the next few nights getting her back on track and god only knows what kind of mess I will come home to after work. Unbelievable. If you're thinking of boarding your animals, think about going elsewhere. read more

I call this vet clinic, which I have been bringing my dogs to for quite sometime, because one of my Miniature Schnauzers, Schatzi, was very sick. I explained to the lady on the phone, that Schatzi was displaying the same symptoms as when she ended up in doggie hospital a couple of years earlier with liver issues. I was told there were no appointments available for about 2 weeks. I told her I didn't need an appointment, my dog needed to see a vet, she was so sick. Again, no appointments available. I asked about emergencies, again I was told, no appointments available. She did call out to the Atwater Clinic, also, no appointments for 2 weeks! I checked with Valley Vet...no appointments. They suggested Taylor Vet in Turlock. Someone else told me to go to Monte Vista Small Animal Hospital in Turlock, which I did. Why no emergency appointments at Merced Vet? You kicked my pup and me to the curb! I've always paid my bills, so that's not an issue! What would someone do if their pup got hit by a car? No emergency plan in place? So not acceptable! I am so disappointed with their lack of concern and caring. I will not be back to your clinic. Monte Vista Small Animal Hospital, even though I had never been there ever with my animals, never once said 'no'. Shame on you, Merced Veterinary Clinic! At this point, there is absolutely nothing you can do to make this right! Nothing! I am upset. If anyone asks for a veterinary referral, it will certainly not be you! You let me down! read more

Every time I go there I feel like I'm getting ripped off for what little they do and how much they charge. For comparison, it cost around $130 for the first visit (1 shot & neutering) and $60 for the "booster" shot they had to give him a few weeks afterward. (Appointment fee is around $40 per visit.) Unfortunate circumstances brought me to Merced Vet clinic. After Lily's usual vet denied service to us (the doctor wanted to treat our 17 year old poodle for seizures - who was in late stage renal failure and in a lot of pain - she told us she would not humanely euthanize), I called MVC to ask if they would take up Lily's case. (She had turned a corner and was going downhill, obviously in pain, and had lost interest in treats. I made the decision to help her pass gently rather than prolong unnecessary suffering.) Staff was extremely accomodating to our needs and scheduled us an appointment right away. We were able to take our time with Lily and go to the river for her last walk. Dr. Pike and Kayla very kindly talked me through the process, made sure I was ok with everything, and then gave me as much time in the room with my girl as I needed. The staff played lullabies in the office as Lily quietly went to sleep. Dr. Pike helped me make the best of a difficult situation, and I am very grateful. No one at this office judged me or made me feel guilty for choosing to have Lily (very humanely) euthanized. They were supportive and sorry for my loss. Took my foster dog here and there were many things unsettling about this vet. We took the foster dog here 3 days after rescuing him from a shelter, knowing he had a bad cough and a dislocated hip. His x-rays of heart and lung were not good and the vet went over the possibilities. The part I hated the most was that I was given multiple suggestions and comments that it may not be worth my money to determine what was wrong with him. The vet also said even if we pinpoint it, dog may need to be on meds for life, may need this, could be that and again "may not be worth it for a foster dog." That felt so unacceptable to me. I have never been to a vet who would suggest that a dog is not worth it. I have never been to a vet that was not positive and went through the options knowing I was there to keep a dog healthy. I know that a vet should not lie to me and give false hope, but it seemed that they had no faith in themselves that anything could be done... and they didn't even run any tests yet! I had just met this dog and this vet made me feel horrible and so sad. Turns out, all tests were negative, his body healed after nourishment and love and we took him to Valley Animal Hospital to finish his vet care and fix his hip. Valley Animal hospital is a trillion times better, they seem to care about their clients and patients. Anyways, other little things bothered me about Merced Vet Clinic: -multiple vet techs would not hold the door for me on multiple occasions when they saw me carrying this sickly dog who could not walk in both of my arms. No assistance. -They let the doors slam into the patient rooms. Again, happened more than once. Most animals at the vet are sick or hurt and don't want to be there, how about close a door properly instead of scaring everyone with loud doors slamming. It even made me jump -One time, one of the techs (or receptionist? she was behind the desk) asked me to go weigh the dog.... now normally I wouldn't mind to weigh the dog myself at your office (even though it's your job and you are just sitting there) but again, sick dog... had to carry... no help -They require overnight stays for neuter even though no one stays on staff overnight. Perhaps there is a good reason but it doesn't make sense to me and they couldn't explain why I couldn't take him home. So that was the end of that... good news is they will fax or mail records to your new vet or to your house. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. . . I brought 2 dogs to be spayed and 1 for a check up. Although I was shocked at the cost of all the add ons in addition to the $153 for less than 20 lbs spay..it was expected. A nodule was found on the breast of one of the dogs and I was told $400 additional for the removal and it would also cover additional pain meds--this was all agreed via text message which i still have. When I took my dogs home I did not have extra pain medicine--both dogs received a 3 day supply only. The dog with the extra procedure cont to have pain past the 4th day and when I called and asked about the pain medication--I was told it would be better for to have an injection--the vet did not want to give anymore oral pain medication--and that would be extra ( which I assumed would be covered by the additional $400). I also had a heart worm test/fecal done on both dogs. I got a call saying they forgot to do a stool sample on one of the dogs so I asked for a refund. Rachel, the tech said she couldn't give one, but I could try to get a stool sample myself. I also had to remind them to give me the cone of shame that i paid for as i left. While I was in the waiting room, the receptionist kept rolling her eyes and making fun of a Latina woman and her kids--and saying obnoxiously loud in English--that she should control her kids better--wow, at least have the courage to say it to the woman--I'm pretty sure the Latina woman understood what the receptionist was saying. Two weeks later I bring one dog in for staples removal..ask about that refund and am told that the blood work was sent out, but I had missed my 7 day deadline on getting a stool sample done. I was never told that I had a 7 day deadline. Needless to say, I am never going back there. After paying over $1028 in fees and tests and provedure, the least they could have done was to offer to get a stool sample and still turn it . Horrible service, misrepresentation. Take your beloved pets elsewhere! Find another vet! read more

In contrast to the other review on here, I know this is a great vet clinic. Their office visits are $45 per visit, which includes complementary nail trimmings. (I think this is average for most office visits in the area). The clinic is also very clean & professional. Dr. Lawson, & all the other doctors and staff are the absolute best I've ever seen. Every single staff member/doctor greets you with a smile and is genuinely glad to see you & will soon know your pet by name. I took my Alaskan Malamute, Denali there for almost 3 years. Denali had suffered a severe case of heart worms that he had contracted almost a year before we started going to MVC. While Dr. Lawson & Dr. Winn and all the staff did everything possible to try and get my boy better, I sadly had to put him down on April 23, 2012. I know that the doctors and staff really do care about all the pets under their care. I know it must still be hard for anyone to have to do, but it really made me feel better that Dr. Lawson cried as well when we had to put my beautiful boy down. I am still confident that everything possible was done to save my boy and am pleased with the care we received. Even though I plan to move up to the Bay Area soon, when I do eventually get another Malamute, or two, I will make the drive back to Merced so that Dr. Lawson & the rest of the wonderful staff can care for my dogs for routine check-ups. Although it is very expensive, I very much appreciate the good care given by this staff, to the pets they care for. I've been taking my pets to this clinic for 4 years now, and I've always been treated very well, as have my pets. The staff bring their own pets to the office with them, and they keep the sweetest kitty at the front desk to greet the customers. I took my dog here for a skin growth concern + vaccine boosters and the vet was wonderful. We have moved a lot (and thus seen a lot of different vets during our moves) and this place was by far my favorite. I really appreciated that the vet took the time to pet my nervous little dog to make her more comfortable before the exam. The visit didn't feel rushed and I felt that the vet really cared about my dog. It's not the cheapest clinic but I don't mind paying a bit more for the extra care they put into my pet. Great staffs and very friendly. My Pomeranian (Data) had been pooping mucus and blood for few days and i tried everything I can on the net before I visit the vet. Was able to make appointment the next day in the morning. Met with Dr Ellis Karr is wonderful to which my Data was right away comfortable with her. She check on data and sent us home with some med. price is cheap. She check the feces sample that I brought in and found worms which quickly ready the med for pick up in the afternoon. Two weeks ago I brought my 7 year old dog in for a rabies vaccination. He had received a 5-year vaccination (5 years ago) and had not received a vaccination on the 4th year. California requires a rabies vaccination every 3 years and I was trying to get my dog groomed, and he needed to update his vaccination. This is an adult dog that is kept in the back yard and has no contact with other dogs. I was able to get the shot without an exam and they arranged for me to come back in two weeks to have him shaved. We made the appointment and I was fairly pleased. When I got home I found that they had given him a one-year shot (he is an adult dog with a history of current rabies vaccination (recognized by veterinarians - although the state says three years) He should have received a 3-year shot. I was quite pleased that they did not try to force my dog to have non-core vaccinations in order to be groomed. Except for giving an adult dog a puppy shot, it was a fairly pleasant visit. I returned to Merced Veterinary Clinic this morning to have him shaved. We expect to extend the run of triple digit temperatures for at least another 10 days - so this is essential for the dog's health. They questioned why he hadn't received his puppy shots (non-core shots) and said that they could not shave him because all of the dogs are housed in the same room (boarding dogs and patients? yipes!) The office manager said that I would at least have to get a bordatella shot because it is spread via an airborne vector. Two weeks ago no additional shots were required and now a new shot is required because of the way they house their patients and boarders? Okay, now I'm just a bit creeped out . Tifany, the office manager, said they make all of the dogs get the full series of shots if they are being boarded or groomed. And that was because my dog is going to carry in potential diseases on his paws when he enters the front door. PERHAPS THEY SHOULD HAVE GROOMING AND BOARDERS ENTER THROUGH ANOTHER ENTRANCE if this is the problem. My dog is a single adult dog, kept in a solid sided back yard with no contact with other dogs, the only possible source of disease would be from all of the dogs sharing a common room at the vet's office, and they would have all received the same vaccinations, so anything that is coming in on their paws would be unique and likely not covered by any vaccination. I explained that there is no way in hell my dog would carry in something that was not carried in by the other dogs entering the front entrance (and less likely since this is the first patient of the morning) I asked them to explain this logical inconsistency and they said they would not see my dog because I had used the word "Hell" and that was cursing. Please note that they failed to say that there is a recommended intranasal vaccine that can be used in these situations and my dog could have been shaved within 3 days (rather than waiting another two weeks for the more expensive shot to provide immunity!) The 2011 AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) canine vaccine guidelines does not list bordatella as a core vaccine, and it recommends that all dogs that are to be boarded with other animals receive an intranasal vaccine 3-5 days before being intermingled with other canines. HOW IS IT THAT THE OFFICE MANAGER DID NOT KNOW THE OFFICIAL GUIDELINES FOR VACCINATION? SHE SHOULD HAVE SUGGESTED AN INTRA NASAL VACCINE AND MADE THE APPOINTMENT FOR LATER IN THE WEEK. NEVER GOOD TO ARGUE WITH A CUSTOMER, AND IF YOU DO CHOOSE THAT ROUTE, MAKE SURE YOU ARE KNOWLEDGEABLE ON YOUR SUBJECT. I AM DOWNGRADING MY PREVIOUS REVIEW BECAUSE TODAY'S VISIT CONTRADICTED THE POSITIVES I NOTED ABOVE AND I DON'T WANT MY DOG HOUSED IN CONTACT WITH OTHER DOGS, NOT EVEN FOR HIM TO BE SHAVED DOWN - ITS JUST NOT A GOOD VETERINARY MEDICAL PRACTICE I never saw their back room, but it sounds like it might be concrete with chain link dividers and hose down floors with in-floor drains - how else might infectious particles become airborne and affect all of the dogs in the room? Hose spray would do it! I didn't go to the back to see if there was a fresh air area where the dogs could be moved during cleaning - WOW, THIS VISIT BROUGHT UP SO MANY CONCERNS ABOUT THE POSSIBILITIES OF MY DOG GETTING SICK AT THE VET'S OFFICE. I guess the office manager's scare tactics were a bit too effective. This is a followup on the last post, two weeks later. Today, I received a letter from Tiffany, the Office Manage stating that since I was unhappy with their service, I could find another vet. Perhaps she read Yelp and is more concerned about some symbolic attempt at revenge on the part of the office manager than correction of issues with housing sick animals, surgical patients and boarded dogs in the same room. I wasn't going to take my dog back, previous to receiving this letter. Apparently pride is more important than good vet medical practice and customer service. read more

I took my dog in who had gotten injured & had a fracture on a friday. She had x-rays, exam & was given some pain medicine. I also was told that I had to wait possibly till Monday for their orthopedic dr. to review.(since they only have a mobile orthopedic surgeon). So my dog suffered all night Friday & we used all the pain meds. So my husband said that he didn't want to wait till Monday or possibly longer. I then took her to Valley Animal clinic & called the Merced office to get my x-rays transfered over & they were closed so I called the Atwater office which was open because they rotate weekends being open. Anyway the Atwater office stated they had no way to get into their office in Merced's system. This the same office just two locations. I ended up paying again for x-rays at the Valley office who ended up taking care of my pet. I then called the Merced office and asked the for the office manager who is Julie & explained what happened & requested a refund for the x-rays only that could not access for me on their own system since I had to pay for them again. Julie said she would get back to me but never did so I called her & she said no that was decided, I told her I would do a dispute on my credit card for the services then. I contacted my credit card company & did a dispute & the response from Merced Veterinary was that they were closed, which was a total lie because the Atwater office was open it's just that they don't have their systems linked(so stupid). I ended up getting a call from Dr. Lawson & she apologized & stated that I should of initially been set home that Friday with the x-rays on disc & stated that they were working on getting their systems linked. Therefore, I do not recommend this office because they totally lied in their letter which was on the Atwater office letterhead stating they were closed & they were not. I feel that their office manager Julie is totally unprofessional she said she send me a letter stating they would no longer be my vet which is fine but I never received a letter at all! What nerve, they still got paid in full. They are totally dishonest & unprofessional there so don't waste your money$$$ if something serious happens. I actually rate them 0. read more

The manager of our housing community mentioned they had some 6 month old cats that had there shots and were ready to adopt. She mentioned this to us because at that age they are a little harder to find a home for and she knows that we have room and a loving place for a kitty. We called the clinic to see if this was the case and if the cats still needed a home. They said that both were still there had their shots and were free to adopt if we wanted them. So, my wife, I and our three year old son went to the clinic to see the cats. When we went in to the clinic and asked about the kittens the first thing we were asked was " are you a customer of this clinic" we are not customers of that clinic. We were then told to wait and we could come into a room and see the cats. At this point I would like to expand upon the situation and mention that we were are a younger family expecting in July. I have a handle bar moustache and my wife has a couple of tattoos on arms and legs, my son is adorable and was dressed cute as a button. We were dressed casual. I had Jeans and a t-shirt, my wife with regular shorts and a tank top. We certainly weren't dressed for a business meeting but in no way looked trashy. While we were waiting I noticed the head nurse passed by about 4 times each time looking at us. My son was quietly sitting at a kids table drawing pictures of kitties with provided crayons and paper. Which was very nice of them to provide. After about !0 minutes. She brought out one of the cats, and immediately asked us who are regular vet was? We do not have a regular vet. All our animals our spayed and neutered, we have three in total. They are in very good shape. We do not have a permanent vet because of very bad experiences here in town somewhat recently. I started to explain this to her after I answered No to her question. Thinking that maybe we could set up a checkup for other animals after the birth of our child, there in not only getting a new addition to our family but finding a vet that we felt comfortable with long term. She promptly interrupted me asking me if I wanted to hold the kitten. Well that was the point she immediately, almost shoved the cat on me. Which she then stood there making me nervous let alone the cat, another worker also stepped up from behind the desk. after about 3 seconds the cat wanted to get up I. I don't blame her. She hopped down, anybody who owns cat knows that you don't hold a new or even one of your cats if they don't want to be held. So, as I was going to call her and woo her over again the nurse promptly walked over to the cat picked her up and told us that there was a waiting list for the cats and that we could leave our information. I did, but I must admit that I was a little in shock because I know from another person who is close to this clinic that there is no waiting list for these kittens. My wife and I are both hard working tax paying individuals have 1 kids with one on the way, pay taxes, receive no help from the government, have very loved and cared for animals. This obvious discrimination was very hurtful, I apologize for the length of the review but discrimination is a word that is easy to say but because it involves the feelings it invokes it is a little harder to explain. We came in with the good intentions of giving a home to a 6 month old calico, or tuxedo cat, not the most sought after cats. Left knowing that this clinic decided almost entirely by our appearance that we were unfit for their cats. They could have at least let us see the cats in the room, there was nobody in the clinic. Nope we weren't good enough for them. So, be wary if you don't want to feel like undesirables you might want to dress business casual to go to this vet. read more
