We thought we were going to be bummed to be so far out of the valley floor, but it turned out to be the perfect escape from the crowds. We will definitely be coming back.

Beginning on our first night, we repeatedly found black bugs crawling on our pillows and in our bedding. We reported the problem immediately, and over the course of our stay we continued documenting it with photos and videos as it kept happening. On both the first and second day, we asked to be moved to a different cabin. Rather than relocating us, we were repeatedly told the issue had been resolved after the bedding was changed, the room was inspected, and the cabin was treated. Unfortunately, none of those efforts solved the problem. Despite the bugs continuing to appear night after night, we were never moved. By the final night, we no longer felt comfortable sleeping in the king bed. I slept on a small leather couch, while my husband slept in the other bedroom with our nephew. This is the part that I still cannot understand. The staff kept telling us we are in the forest, so bugs are normal, acting as if we were being difficult (about bugs crawling by our faces every night!!!!) If insect activity is common enough in this environment that the resort has established pest management protocols, then staff should have known that simply changing the bedding was unlikely to resolve the issue and should have relocated us after the first recurrence. If this was an unusual event, then repeated bugs in a guest's bed should have prompted an immediate relocation anyway. Either way, leaving guests in the same cabin was the wrong decision. After returning home, I contacted the General Manager with a detailed account of our experience. His response (again) focused largely on explaining that Firefall Ranch is located in a natural mountain environment where insects can occasionally enter accommodations. While I understand that insects exist outdoors, my complaint was never about seeing bugs outside. It was about repeatedly waking up with bugs on our pillows and in our bedding while remaining in the same cabin despite reporting the issue every day. The resort also referenced a $150 credit that was placed on our folio during our stay. We never requested compensation, and given what occurred, I found that gesture to be an inadequate resolution rather than a meaningful one. Honestly, it was offensive. Had we simply been moved to another cabin after the problem continued, this review probably would not exist. I am sharing this experience so future guests can make an informed decision. Based on how our situation was handled, I cannot recommend staying here.

It was a little pricey, but honestly, that's kind of expected when you're eating on-site. We booked the Grizzly Room and were pleasantly surprised by how much space we had. It had TWO full bathrooms, which was such a huge plus for our family! Everything was clean and nicely maintained. There were so many fun things to do that we honestly didn't even take that many pictures because we were too busy enjoying ourselves Overall, we had a great time celebrating our daughter's birthday. That water was NASTY. The bathrooms in the waterpark area and near the entrance were NASTY. (Despite the fact there was never a wait....hmmm) The Waterpark area is too small for the amount of people allowed in there. It's VERY unsanitary. The adults in attendance from the greater public were quite intoxicated and the kids were not being watched well. The Chloramine gas levels in that place were off the chart. This can cause shortness of breath, rashes, coughing blood and other issues. Solution to navigating this environment: I rented an outside cabana, luckily the weather was good. My cabana server tried her best. They are understaffed. The advertised cabana perks are hit and miss. It does get you out of the chemical haze inside and provides the only real shade protection available outside. Conclusion: it's too much work to learn the navigation to make this unsanitary location more than a "one and done," destination.

Unfortunately, there are also some practical issues that take away from the overall experience. I wanted to love this place more than I did. The Good The atmosphere is excellent. The hotel has personality, and the first floor is a great place to hang out. It feels like somewhere you can actually spend time instead of simply checking in, sleeping, and leaving. The communal space is one of the hotel's strongest features. The staff I interacted with were young, friendly, and approachable. That goes a long way toward making a stay enjoyable, and I appreciated the welcoming attitude. The rooms are good for what they are. They're nothing particularly spectacular, but they're perfectly adequate. Not every hotel room needs to be a luxury experience, and the rooms serve their purpose. The gym was another pleasant surprise. It's clean, has more machines than they probably need, and offers a good selection of weights. Is it a world-class fitness facility? No. Is it more than enough for a hotel gym? Absolutely. You can get a legitimate workout in without feeling like you're trying to lift a decorative dumbbell in a closet. The Not-So-Good Parking is a major headache, especially if you're driving a full-size truck. The parking situation is difficult for larger vehicles, and the overflow parking arrangement wasn't reassuring. The street parking area was very dark, which made me uncomfortable leaving my truck and belongings there overnight. I'm not saying something would necessarily happen, but the setup didn't inspire confidence. Valet parking is $15 per day, and it starts to feel like the most practical option if you want to avoid the parking hassle. That's another expense to factor into the stay. When you're paying to stay at a hotel, parking shouldn't feel like a separate logistical challenge. Then there's the $400 deposit. Four hundred dollars! That's a substantial amount to have tied up during a hotel stay, particularly if you're not expecting it. Make sure you understand the deposit requirements before arriving. The room door was another concern. My door didn't automatically shut behind me, which is something I'd expect a hotel to get right. I reported it to the staff, and they said they would fix it. I appreciated their response, but a door that doesn't reliably close and latch is more than a minor inconvenience; it's a security concern. The walls seem paper thin. Sound carries between rooms, and I noticed the hotel provides earplugs. Let's just say that little amenity suddenly made a lot more sense. Earplugs are a thoughtful touch, but ideally, you wouldn't need them to get a decent night's sleep. Convenience could be better, too. The ice machine is only on the third floor. It's not a disaster, obviously, but getting ice shouldn't feel like a minor expedition. The gym is good, but getting to it early in the morning is an odd experience. If you want to work out before 6 a.m., you have to go out through an emergency exit and then walk back into the hotel through the front entrance. Nothing says "good morning, time to work out" quite like taking an unexpected outdoor detour before you've finished waking up. The gym deserves credit; the access arrangement does not. A Note About Cleanliness I spotted a live German cockroach on the first floor. To be fair, it was four floors away from my room, and I didn't establish that there was a pest issue in my room. One sighting doesn't prove the entire hotel is infested, but it's certainly not something you want to see during a hotel stay. German cockroaches are particularly unwelcome travel companions, and the last thing anyone wants is to bring an unwanted souvenir home in their luggage. It's worth mentioning, even if I can't conclude anything about the extent of the problem from a single sighting. Overall Impression The El Capitan has genuine strengths: a great atmosphere, an inviting first floor, friendly staff, decent rooms, and a surprisingly good gym. Those are real positives, and I don't want them overlooked. The frustration is that several negatives involve basic practical details: parking, the deposit, the door, noise, and access arrangements. These aren't necessarily glamorous issues, but they affect the actual experience of staying here. My impression is that the hotel has plenty of charm, but some of the details need more attention. A great atmosphere can make a hotel memorable; it just shouldn't require a $15 daily parking decision, a $400 deposit surprise, and a trip to the third floor for ice to complete the experience. There's a lot to like about the El Capitan, but charm alone doesn't make up for everything. With improvements to parking, room security, noise control, and early-morning access, this could be a much stronger overall experience.

It's not a super long drive from Fresno, and it was a quite enjoyable scenic drive. When you get there, you're greeted by a nice attendance at the front desk. They give you all the details on the center and then I headed over to the locker room to change. They have two sets of soaking tubs one set is where you have to have clothing on and the other one is ware clothing is optional. The one with the clothing required was full, so I decided to track over to the clothing optional part. For those I'd like to go in the nude the area is fenced off, so nobody can see inside, but I decided to go in in my swimsuit. It was a great relaxing time where I took time to read a book that I haven't been able to enjoy for a while. Since I had packed a lunch, I went to over one of the picnic tables that they had and enjoy my lunch. After lunch, I headed over to the regular pool again. It was a great temperature and soaked for a little bit, took in the sun and then headed on back home. This is a fantastic place if somebody wants to do a day trip. However, there are areas where you can camp out with cabins and I believe in airstream you can rent out. Highly recommend.

To get to your room they provide a shuttle from the parking lot right to your room. The rooms are new and modern with plenty of space and partially stocked. There is also room service if you want it. There is also a restaurant on the grounds but make a reservation. The hotel itself is beautifully maintained and really clean and they offer complimentary teas and coffees in the lobby. If you're planning a trip to the Monterey or Carmel area I would definitely recommend the Sanctuary Beach Resort.

I had also requested a simple welcome card for my mother-in-law's first trip to California, and although staff said they would gladly do it, it was never done. We also had multiple room issues throughout the stay. The TV was not working, the phone buttons to reach the front desk did not work, there was no extra pillow for the fold-out bed, and there was even a leftover dog chew from a previous guest found in the bed. To be fair, the maintenance employee was kind and helpful, and the complimentary bottle of wine was appreciated. However, for this price point, the lack of attention to detail and overall service was really disappointing. What upset me most was checkout. I politely explained that I was disappointed and thought at minimum the pet fee might be removed, but there was no effort to make things right beyond emailing the receipt. Beautiful location, but the experience did not match the cost or reputation. I truly wanted to love this stay and left sad and let down instead.

A very comfortable and quiet little cottage. Although, the bathroom was huge with a walk-in shower. There are no tvs in the cottages and the WiFi is a little dodgy. Cell phone reception isn't the best either. I think what I am getting at is that you can really disconnect when you say at La Honda Park. You are forced to communicate with your loved ones. The cottages are only equipped with a microwave. If you want to cook something more robust, there is a communal kitchen in the pool house. Believe me, it has everything you need. Also, there are bbqs in just about every common area. Aside from the beautiful grounds and comfortable accommodations, there is the barn. The barn is probably the best part about this place. It has a foosball table, a pool table, poker table, dart board, and a tv. The back doors slide open to a small seating area overlooking Angel Creek. I can't describe it. You just need to experience. The owner are Jenn and Barr. They were so nice. Once we checked in, they left us alone. In fact, they left the property. Besides my family, there was another family staying in the Main House. They were very nice and welcoming. I can't wait to go back and sit next to the creek and drink my morning coffee.

A gaggle of girlfriends rented three cottages here, as three of us were celebrating our 40th/41st birthdays. The perfect "home base" for staging an attack upon Murphys downtown shopping, dining and wine tasting establishments, or as a leap-off point for local hikes and the gorgeous Moaning and Mercer Caverns. Each cottage is appointed with a gas-fueled faux wood-stove fireplace (easy operation via thermostat), fridge, micro, coffee maker, basic silverware/plates/cups, wonderful showers (great for power-washing off the mud and sweat after a day of rappelling and spelunking!) and extremely comfortable queen beds. Each cottage has its own character, giving the feel of the kind of decor a favorite aunt might select for your family's personal mountain cabin. Extremely clean and comfortable! Hang out by the fire, or chill out on your own front porch overlooking the lawn and creek. Or... ...head over to The Barn, a communal recreation room appointed with an air-hockey table, pool table, kitchen area (including a wine fridge!) and big-screen satellite TV/sat radio. The Barn was recently remodeled, using reclaimed barnwood, corrugated metal (for the ceiling sub-roof) and a pretty brilliant wallcovering that looks like warm old plaster, but is actually recycled craft paper and some sort of natural varnish. Cool! Also, a few relics from the region's mining days. There are board games, darts, books and other stuff to keep the individual, family or small group entertained. There's a large swimming pool (unheated in winter) and a small wading pool adjacent to another community kitchen and outdoor picnic area, and the only thing this area lacks is a hot tub. (Hint, hint!) Finally, there's Cosmo, the biggest, sweetest cat you'll ever want to kidnap. He's not allowed in the cabins, but he'll happily keep you company as you read a book on the porch, or wander up to the beautiful waterfalls behind the barn. He'll also keep score if you want to use the bocce court or horseshoe pits! Parking is limited, so don't expect to haul in ATV trailers or your RVs, but that's about the only con to this wonderful little family-run resort!
