A must visit destination if you are in Florence. The lower level is where the locals go to shop their daily grocery. There are meat/cheese/veggie/dried good shops plus tons of amazing local "fast food" I highly recommend that you give their Lampredotto sandwich a try. It may sound not appetizing if you are American, but please set that aside and give it a try. The sandwich is so good for just euro. If such local cuisine is not to your liking, take an escalator to the 2nd floor and you will find a plethora of options that are more catered to tourists. The prices are slightly higher, but you can get so many good dishes up here as well as desserts. There is even a cooking school up there. Super cool. read more

Mercato Centrale is a great place to try a variety of different food both local and international in Florence. The second floor of the market has a food court which my wife and I visited on a recent trip. I tried two different dishes from two vendors: the Pappardelle con Ragu di Cinghiale and the Napoli Pizza. The pasta was savory, delicious and mixed with meaty ground wild boar. The soft crust pizza was topped with briny capers, flavorful anchovies, tangy olives, flavorful tomato sauce and delicious mozzarella cheese. We also ordered glasses of wine from another vendor as well. Went out of our way to visit, closing downstairs when we arrived so did not get the full impact. I bought Cantucci from a local vendor, not what I expected. There was however a little past place downstairs we spotted a line at and it was very fresh and tasty, first gnocchi in Italy so far, so good. Upstairs I ordered Supplies,one bite and threw them away, dry, cold, tasteless, my fried food indulgences need to impress, this was a major disappointment. Porchetta sandwich from the tripe sandwich place was good, a bit more meat was needed to satisfy the pork craving I have had since hearing all the wonderful things about porchetta in Italy. I came here for my late lunch in Florence after arriving from Lake Como an hour later. If you are in Florence and do not know where to eat food because there are too many options, give this place a chance, and you'll be mind-blown. The Mercado is filled with small food stands, and there are a few bars where you can order drinks. Once you order your food from one of the food stalls, find your table and wait for your number to be called to pick up your orders. At any table in the market, there is a barcode that you can scan to order your drinks, or you can find one of the servers wearing a black shirt! Similar to what I've seen in the San Francisco Ferry building or the Philadelphia Reading market. We tried the vegetarian / vegan restaurant Veg and Veg on the second floor and really enjoyed it. Salads were great - the chicken Caesar had almost too much chicken! But it is not a massive salad. The market was crowded even off season so I'd wager a lot of locals shop here. read more

As a visitor from the United States, I was blown away by the quality and variety of offerings. Various vendors are bright together covering so many of the Tuscan speciality dishes. One vendor was making fresh pasta. Another had an impressive display of thick meats for Florentine steak. Another offered inexpensive tripe sandwiches. Another was putting shaved truffles on everything. Started with the truffel shop - ordered a very simple cream based pasta that was covered generously with truffle shavings. Perfectly al dente, incredibly umami. For 22 euro, it was a steal. The tripe sandwich was a much lower price point. Peppery, extremely tender, sauced lightly. The kids surprisingly loved it - and thankfully didn't ask any questions before digging in. Order the Dry Aged Ribeye on the 2nd floor. It weight 1.8kg but they charged 2.0kg. The total came out to 106 Euros at 53 Euro per kg. Fine, I'm at a tourist trap and enjoying the scene with the family. So no complaining. But the steak wasn't aged, just regular ribeye as I'm eating it. So overpaid again but still happy to enjoy it with the family. As we try to separate the meat, I realized we needed knives because the slices were so large and have a lot of gristle and fat. So I go back to ask for knives. When I got to the counter and ask for knives a heavy set man with a beard started to get angry with me. I told him I just paid 106 Euro and just wanted something to cut the meat. He started to complain and yell. Luckily the man who cut the meat and overcharged me came over and gave me two knives. If you want the experience I say go for it. But don't be surprised if the taste isn't so great and they overcharge you. I would try a good restaurant for steak. You live and learn. Separately, the pasta, the tripe, the rice balls, the pastry, the spritz, and the gelato were all pretty good at the food court. We came here a couple times while we were in Florence. read more

Walking onto the ground floor of the market I encountered a range of shops from fresh flowers to butchers selling meat. The energy was bustling and welcoming. Other kinds of food on the first floor included fruit, dried pasta, spices, wine, olive oil, and pastries. Then, the first floor had many small restaurants and lots of seating; there were many tourists and locals grabbing lunch with friends and family. These restaurants varied from barbeque, sushi, pizzerias, paninis, and vegetarian food. If you're visiting Florence the Mercato Centrale is somewhere you have to experience and sample many of the region's staples. There are vendors on the bottom floor and a cafeteria on the top floor. The first place we try is in the back, a green stand that serves lampredotto, a sandwich made from the stomach of a cow. I prefer this sandwich with both red and green sauce. So delicious. The second place we tried was at night, a pizza vendor in the cafeteria that made a pizza called "The Napoli", wood fired pizza with tomato sauce, anchovy, capers and olives. That pizza is boss, but it was the third location in the market that blew our minds. In the cafeteria there's a gelato, chocolate and baked goods vendor that sells a biscotti ice cream sandwich. A thin biscotti wafer on either side of a helping of gelato. Life isn't the same after eating that ice cream sandwich. read more

Mercato Centrale is wild. I thought I'd seen it all when I visited the Boqueria in Barcelona, but this is just next level. There are two levels. Downstairs you'll find a variety of speciality shops and some sit down restaurants. If you are staying in Florence and cooking this is a great opportunity to buy meats, cheese, fresh pasta, fish, wines and on and on. There are also some sit down restaurants in the mix where you can order pastas, bruschettas, etc. Upstairs you'll find the mecca of all food halls. Any and every sort of vendor that you can imagine is there serving up a different type of delicacy. Just when you think you've figured out what you want someone else walks by with another mouthwatering dish. You can find everything from pizzas to pasta, fried seafood, meats, rice balls, meats, cheese and more. There is even a truffle bar. And of course, lots of regular bars with wine, beer and cocktails. Amidst all of these options I kept things super simple and went with a classic neapolitan pizza. To be fair, I hadn't had any pizza in Italy yet, and you've got to start with the basics. A pizza is around 10 euro, and it's a solid share for two. Plus, we knew we wanted gelato and a panini after. It's called strategy folks. Can't fill up too much at one time in Florence. The pizza was perfectly crispy and delicious with lots of fresh buffalo mozz. I'd urge anyone visiting Florence to visit at least once for lunch. It's worth the trip. read more

We love this place! Went there every day looking for lunch. It is a huge 2-story market, with mostly butchers, produce, and a few lunch stalls downstairs. Upstairs, it is an overwhelming number of stalls selling lunch. Downstairs favorites: the pasta seller, near the middle, that sells fresh hand made pastas for €6 a late--you choose the kind of pasta and the kind of sauce and that's it. They make it right in front of you. The flavors are awesome-- my suggestion is the chef special--it was lemon ravioli with olive oil and pelarmesan! Also try the fagottini (little bags of beef) with porcini mushroom sauce. Both were excellent. Also downstairs; the beef place- they make the largest and best cheese burgers in the place--for €8, you can get a cheeseburger cooked to order with bun, lettuce and tomato. It was extremely well-cooked (MR) and huge--so come hungry. Upstairs there's everything from quiches, to pizza, to panini's to desserts and alcohol. Also a fresh seafood bar--where you can order a wide selection of fried foods and freshly shucked oysters on the half shell. Don't miss the tartlettas (the berry one is my favorite) and the Tiramisu with berries on top. Excellent choices all. Fun to come try something new every day. They have a bar, bakery, gelato place, burgers, pastas, dumpling station, pizza, and a salad/vegetarian station as well.
