Mercado 925 - VEGETARIANO Organic Sofritas Tofu, Grilled Vegetables, Green Rice, Whole Beans, Salad, Organic Yellow Corn Tortillas - Mexican Near Me - Berkeley, California

Truly wasn't expecting much out of this place despite the good reviews because I'm from San Diego. I've been trying to find a solid taco spot in Berkeley for too long, and Mercado is it. Come for their $3.50 Taco Tuesday deal! We ordered for pickup, and when we walked in we were impressed by the restaurant's decor and ambiance. When we asked if we could dine-in, the staff offered us water and welcomed us to sit anywhere we wanted. We tried every single taco on the menu. Our favorites by far were the pollo, picadillo, and al pastor. We were pleasantly surprised by the picadillo, which is stewed ground beef in a flavorful tomato-based sauce. All of the tacos came with a nice portion of meat, onions, cilantro, and a charred smoky salsa. The corn tortillas were fresh and warm, but the tacos themselves needed maybe a touch more salt. Pleasantly surprised by Mercado, and hope to be back for more! read more

The ambiance and service were great but the food was just okay. I ordered the Baja tacos and the first bite was just okay. Then I ordered the avocado salsa on the side and it definitely brought those tacos to life. I'll be back but just for that avocado salsa read more

A friend recommended we check out this spot, and am I glad we did. I haven't had tex-mex/Mexican style food this good since I lived in Texas. The chips were seasoned (such a rare thing, and VERY MUCH appreciated), the main dishes were flavorful, and the service was good too. Definitely will be going here again at some point. Highly recommend. read more

I was visiting Berkeley on business and recommended the restaurant. It is fabulous and seems posh but affordable. The food is fresh and worth the price. I went in after work and it wasn't crowded but families and dates enjoying good food and conversation. The wait staff is friendly and helped me make a good healthy selection. There is soft lighted table dining and a bar. read more

Drinks. Food . Ambiance Great atmosphere and our server Rafel was nice. Really loved our food, delicious tacos. Spicy pork = spicy carnitas but they weren't super spicy at least for me. Just the right amount. My cocktail was just delish, mezcal, tamarindo and Tajín . Will come back! read more

My family loved this place on our first visit and have only grown to adore it more on subsequent trips, including a grown-ups only double date! The staff is kind and swift and everything I've eaten has been something I'd order again in a heartbeat. Do not miss the platanos, fish tacos, Mexicali tacos (I've enjoyed all the proteins I've tried: al pastor, carne asada, picadillo), or the barbacoa en jugo. These are exceptional stand-outs on a menu where you can't go wrong. I haven't been for brunch yet but I hope to remedy that soon. The only knock on Mercado 925 is the acoustics. It's LOUD in this place with the concrete floor, high ceilings, metal chairs. Some sound dampening would go a long way. That aside, I recommend this place for nearly any occasion from date to family meal with kids to group dinner. It's my favorite sit down Mexican restaurant in the East Bay. read more

Food, drinks, service and ambience is a 4 ****. Best of all you get everything at a reasonable price. Emmanuel was our server and was great! Thank you and see you next time. I wish I took pictures of my drinks and food and I was too busy enjoying everything. Next time.... Take my word for it try Mercado 925 a try. read more

Beautiful place! Exciting menu. Mike was delicious, pickled onions were rad. Masa on empanadas was done well. Just wish some things were seasoned a bit more. Asked for salt, and luckily they gave plenty of limes. Birria quesadilla was good. But in sharing, one person got the middle which had most of the meat, and we were left with the ends, mostly tortilla. But the salsa for it was good! Chips I dug, freshly fried. Fish tacos though were a bit off the mark to all 3 of us. Looked great! But, so much topping of slaw and salsa that any crisp of the Baja fried fish was gone. In fact, two of us grabbed tacos out of a puddle on the plate, and I watched as my friend boy and had liquid come out of the end back onto his plate. Not sure if overdressed? Fluke plating issue? Idk... But, hate faulting the place, cause they were hospitable and I hope they do well. read more

Stopped in for a taco snack this afternoon. Got two legit chicken mole tacos with some house hot sauce. Honestly I haven't had tacos this tasty since San Diego. I'm going to have to make my way back to sample more of the menu. The hot sauce did not disappoint. read more

Go here!!! Today!!! We are visiting Berkeley and love good "hidden gem" Mexican places and Mercado 925 hit it outta the park! From the fresh made agua Fresca to the housemade guacamole (to die for- it's so insanely good!), verde enchiladas (we had chicken) are an enormous dish that hits it on every level... I had the squash blossom quesadilla special- so cheesy and the sauce that comes with it is the perfect compliment! Honestly, we will be back every trip we make to Berkeley! Plus, the restaurant is beautiful and the service is stellar. 10/10 read more

I usually get the Cuban Sandwich, but the prep has been hit and miss. Dry meat or plastered with mustard. I just wish they were consistent. My mild complaint was met with "thanks for letting us know". Uh... Okay. I do like the bar. I'm not a big drinker, but a cocktail once in a while is nice. read more

Absolutely superb food. In the conversation for best Mexican restaurant. I had the Pipian Mole. My wife had the fish tacos - and everybody does fish tacos and they're always good, right? But she said these were something else. What to compare this to? Comal is only a mile away, and very very good, and much more hip. Just different, more artsy about it - more of a scene - but I think the food at Mercado 925 is worth a best-in-Berkeley vote. Bay Area winner for best Mexican would be - for me - the Cohinita Pibil at Regalito in SF. (I left SF in 2014 but ate again at Regalito in 2024 so I think I'm current.) Nopalito in SF has a more adventuresome menu. But for the East Bay... I think it's Mercado 925 now (honorable mention Comal if you need someplace hip). Service was gracious and friendly. The place is huge, with different moods in 2 halves of the restaurant - plus a loft that wasn't open when we were there. Kids loved the taquitos (and these kids aren't easy). read more

Food was good a little pricey. Service was good nice clean restaurant great location.

Listen, it's good...but definitely catered to white people. I'd go back with people as an easy crowd pleaser place but TBH it just doesn't quite hit the spot for me. I got the carne asada tacos (just asked the waiter for whatever he liked best), can't go wrong, and an agua fresca de sandía. The tacos were pretty oily but good enough, the drink hit. Service was kinda slow. Fancy atmosphere. read more

The food was amazing. We can't wait to go back and try the margaritas! The mole was perfect.

East bay burrito #59 Initial taste - 6/7 Meat - 5/7 Beans - 3/7 Cheese - 4/7 Tortilla - 5/7 Rice - 6/7 Salsa - 6/7 Overall - 5/7 Normally not a fan of fresh salsa in a burrito because it is often watery. This burrito did well with it. Most every ingredient had good flavor and texture. Beans few and far between. Cheese was pretty light, but tasty overall. read more

We've been wanting to try this place for a while and I'm so happy we finally made it! The food was very tasty, the service was great and the ambiance was excellent. Customer service wasn't great. I had called ahead with a question about the menu and the restaurant confirmed they served it and even quoted a price but when we went to order we were told something completely different. When I mentioned we had checked and confirmed ahead of time and that was the reason we made our reservation, they still did nothing to attempt to accommodate. Another person in my party with a serious food allergy called ahead to check about the allergy, they put the phone down and left her holding for over 10 minutes without ever checking back. This was mid afternoon so it was not a busy time. She finally hung up. Nice atmosphere but they are not concerned with their diner's having a good experience. read more

My boyfriend wanted to try this place and I was very hesitant. I have been spoiled with authentic Mexican food at home so I almost never eat Mexican food outside of my house. Anyway, I ordered the huevos rancheros and my boyfriend gets the chilaquiles. He also gets an espresso and I get an orange juice. My meal was amazing, it genuinely felt like I was eating at home!!! Even the orange juice was made with fresh oranges. I didn't care too much for the beans but my boyfriend said they were delicious. The young lady taking order was very friendly and helpful. The plates and cups were beautiful as well. The restaurant was also very clean and I loved the way it was decorated. I will definitely be coming back to try other dishes. We came across this place on accident during our trip to Berkeley and loved it so much we went back two days in a row. It's the perfect mix of modern but authentic. The service was wonderful and everyone was so attentive and helpful. As for food, we ordered the carne asada & carnitas tacos with rice and beans on the side and a carne asada torta. We LOVED the chile relleno and café con leche. Tasted like I got it at my Tia's house in Mexico. Would definitely come back next time! read more

Dining on the smell alone of Mercado 925 would be worth a bill, but as you sink a fork into the mole, the enchiladas, and the tacos dorados, you're mouth will agree with what your nose already knows. Sip on the cafe con leche or Oaxacan Negroni as you ease yourself into the weekend, but go with a mezcal as a choice if you have the latter. Service is zippy yet not overbearing or rushed, responsive to questions and quick to change table placements as the crowd rolls in. read more

What's not to like? This new spot has eater-friendly prices. Their Taco Tuesday includes Mondays and Tuesdays! When the tacos are only $3.25 each. It is cra-zy! Service is really fast too. Entered. Ordered. Used the facilities and washed my hands real quick. By time I came out, my delicious cocktail was ready and waiting for me. I glanced at my phone, and whoosh, here are my three tacos. Hola, Barbacoa, Carne Asada, and Carnitas. Ranked from better to best: Barbacoa! Carne Asada!! Carnitas!!! Mercado 925 makes everything with high-grade ingredients. I love tacos made with perfect soft corn tortillas and a fantastic salsa. The roasted tomatillo salsa is straight fire. Service is amazing. There's one point where there were two people standing in line at the counter and one of the servers rushed over to make sure that both parties were able to place your orders same time. Who else does that? I love the decor too. Not totally fancy, just really nice. Good wood and decent finishes for a place that isn't 100% upscale. This is definitely not a cheap taqueria. Just a high-end taqueria with bargain pricing. You can bet that any time I'm shopping on 4th street that if I find a long line at Tacubaya, I won't think twice about heading to Mercado 925 instead. read more

You order at the counter, take a number and sit. We were here on a Friday around 530. Good was served super fast and service was quick and friendly. The inside is brand new and well decorated. It's my new favorite Mexican place! We'll be back regularly for sure. read more

Had to run into Berkeley for an errand. As I drove down University Ave., I passed a super sexy Mexican restaurant. Dim lights and a cool name. After my errand I would totally be trying this place out. As I walked in, it was a total eyeball party. Gorgeous lighting, beautiful subway tiles and the most friendly staff. The fish tacos are what I ordered, my eyes rolled into the back of my head they were so delicious. They are now doing an expansion. It looks stunning. I'll for sure be recommending Marcado 925 to all of my crew. Will be back for sure!!! Thank you! read more
