Also there were times I had leftovers that I would wake up wanting and the front desk would warm them up for me. Our room was clean and even when sleeping in it didn't matter that I got up after 2pm they still ensured our bedding was changed and fresh towels. This place is gorgeous bummer that they no longer have the spa and pool on the ground level but I understand it can be pricey to maintain.

Anyway, she appeared not to have noticed me so I clacked my heels on the floor, and the reverberating echo which rippled through the foyer startled the lass and she quietly screamed. After she had recovered from her shock, she had become angered, and made little effort to conceal it. I told her that I was here for a hotel room and she said "yes I think I figured that part out thanks" before typing with her keyboard. Eventually she assigned me to a room without saying anything else to me, just handing the key card over without another word. The key card was greasy and almost slid out of my hand. That did mean that it slid into the sensor with ease, however, so this I cannot complain about. That being said, I would have probably preferred to have just stayed in the hallway and tried my luck with the mercy of the other guests. The room was about as sanitary as a swamp on a humid summer day, and I tried to make sure that I did not touch any of the surfaces as they looked diseased. The bed had a disturbing morphology and, upon further inspection, I found it's undulating crevices to be distressed. There was also a dead bee in the sink. I put the bee out of the window to decompose in the natural world, but then I could not close the window no matter how hard I pulled. My room had suddenly become an access-all-hours, free-for-all for the opportunists of society. You won't be surprised to learn that I didn't sleep very much on the lumpen, deformed and gravelly mattress. I decided to purchase the breakfast buffet, and went down to the restaurant area wearing a business woman outfit and heels so no one would question why I was dining alone. I should have turned around and sought alternative victuals after glimpsing the wretched nature of the diners. Their levels of physical fitness and mental acuity were subterranean, which reflected poorly on the breakfast foods. The scrambled eggs were fibrous, and the coffee that I had been so foolish as to sample tasted as if it had been brewed in a nuclear reactor. I knew at this point that I needed to get out of the hotel as soon as possible and never return.

The Bristol Hotel won't win awards for the most imaginative name, or its architecture - it's firmly…read morein the 1970s concrete family - but it's very comfortable and has a wonderful position between Prince Street and Narrow Quay, with views across the spur of the Floating Harbour which reaches up to Broad Quay. Owned by the Doyle Group, the hotel has been completely modernised inside and the rooms are very spacious and light (lots of biege), albeit many open onto the internal court - if it's important to you, ask for a room overlooking the harbour. The rooms seem well equipped, with free broadband access, trouser press and ironing board, plenty of wardrobe space and a nice range of bathroom toiletries. The only downers are that the bathrooms can be a little small, and I'm not keen on the modern style of bed arrangement, where you end up with loads of pillows and cushions and a bedspread, all of which have to be re-arranged before you can actually get into bed. But it was all spotlessly clean. The location is perfect: far enough from the centre to be quiet, but adjacent to lots of the sights, such as Queen's Square, the Harbour, the Arnolfini Gallery and the Cathedral. It's also a minute from the central ferry-taxi stop, from where you can gate a ferry to the SS Great Britain. (You can walk there in ten minutes). There's an NCP car park next door which guests can use - ask for a voucher at reception. There are plenty of restaurants in the area, although colleagues who ate in the hotel's restaurant seemed to have enjoyed their meal. It has the standard buffet breakfast - perfectly OK, but nothing special. Reception service was exceptionally fast and helpful, including check-out - always a good sign. The rack rate is around £80 per room, or £90 including breakfast for two people. Doubtless you could find cheaper deals, which would provide great value.

I wish I had not paid attention to the reviews. Mind you, it is not horrible but it is certainly not an experience as one is led to believe, it failed to deliver on several levels. The reception area is very nice, the check-in was straightforward and I was given a harbour-side room. When I entered the room I was greeted by an unpleasant, musty smell and a carpet that was covered with stains. My 'harbour view' was a bit of water glinting through the trees and the plug in the sink did not work. Altogether, the room was not very inviting and I did not feel at home. The bathroom was small and there was not even a towel rail, the towels were kept under the sink. The desk surface was smudged and one of the glass lamps had a stain (of coffee? Or perhaps blood?) on it, which was nicely reflected on the glossy bedside table top. If I saw it at once the hotel staff should have seen it and cleaned the lamp. The last straw was discovering that I had what seemed to be a hatch leading to attic space in the room and there was a big water stain around it. The door to the hatch was warped and did not fit properly. First impressions: no effort was made to wow first time visitors, the room was quite shabby and I had been expecting a lot more. So I went downstairs and asked for a new room. This was promptly dealt with but when I asked if there were really no other harbour-side rooms the receptionist said no and although she was polite her face said 'not that discussion again!' Off to my new room this one had a much more favourable colour scheme and was altogether much more inviting. The carpet was clean. The smell of room freshener was overpowering. The bathroom had a towel rack! The storage space for clothes was very modest, only one shelf and a rack to hang things on. I preferred to keep my belongings in my suitcase. Once again, there were signs of neglect the drain in the bath was clogged; I was standing in water up to my calves when I showered and part of the desk was damaged. Ideally, things like this should be repaired at once or else a hotel will quickly become run down. From what I saw The Bristol Hotel is on its way to becoming run down very soon if it does not work harder to e.g. keep carpets clean and fix things if they are broken. The breakfast was ok no more and no less, with a selection of food that is standard for any hotel from 2 stars upwards. I was shown to my table in the very nice breakfast area and asked the standard questions, i.e. if I wanted tea or coffee and what kind of toast. By the time I had returned to my table the tea had been served but there was no sign of the toast. Fifteen minutes later and I had to ask a member of staff to get some toast for me, which he promptly did. There was only honey and no jam on my table and when I asked a member of staff for some jam he just went to an empty table and brought me one jar no selection of jams for me! When I went back to my room the door key did not work so I had to go back down to reception. Yes I was checking out that day but check out time is 12 noon and it was just 9am. I was assured that my card would now work and went back upstairs only to discover that the card still refused to unlock my door. Fortunately, a member of the cleaning staff was kind enough to let me in my room and thus spare me a further trip to reception. While checking out, I asked a member of reception about the best way to get a bus to a nearby city. The reply was that I would have to walk down to the bus station (a 15 minute walk) and ask there. Not really the service I would expect from an exceptional hotel and when I replied that my question had not really been answered the receptionist spent a few minutes trying to figure out which bus I could take from a stop that is perhaps not a 15 minute walk away. After a while I realised that it was going nowhere, gave up and walked to the train station, where a member of staff was glad to help me. Now mind you, all of the above are ultimately minor mishaps but I have stayed in many hotels where I had not one of the above issues, i.e. the rooms were in good order, breakfast was excellent, staff was very helpful and there was a concierge to help with any queries. What I am most disappointed about is how The Bristol Hotel failed to live up to the standards set by the many rave reviews on TripAdvisor. I feel that some of the negative reviews must be people who are very sensitive or used to higher end accommodation. While this hotel is a budget hotel, it's perfectly serviceable with comfortable beds and linens. We didn't have any issues with noise, but admittedly aren't typically sensitive to that. The most recent review I can see on yelp for this hotel is 4 years old, so perhaps they have changed management since that time. I would stay again.

It reminds me of a cheaper version of Nobu/Sobu hotels. The room is bar bones. Like a college dorm. No baths -- only stand up showers with a wet room feel. There is no distinction between the shower portion of the floor and rest. So once you take a shower the room is soaked. There only a few channels on the telly. Which was a bit of a bummer. The room service is interesting -- there are no phones, you whatsapp to get service. We texted down for towels and got them within 10 minutes.That was great. They also extended our check in and held our bags no charge. While it's not the the BEST hotel in the world. It's close to the train and is cheap. Depending on your lifestyle it may be amazing. But for me -- it was very meh.

My birthday treat for Mum was becoming ever-so-slightly sour having stood for five minutes in the lobby of the Royal Marriott hotel. We'd walk through its majestic doors, took in the gloriousness of the reception area with all its pomp and grandeur somewhat mystified by what a bargain we had nabbed ourselves. Receptionist: "...Oh wait. You want the OTHER Marriott hotel". Now, I know that Bristol is a fairly large city, but to have two Marriott hotels just a 15 minute walk apart - what are the odds?! (Apparently lots of people make that mistake. Hopefully.) When we eventually got to the right hotel, it felt ever-so-slightly anticlimactic after seeing the beautiful Royal counterpart. But it turned out that we had still grabbed a great room at a discount price. We had a view of the park, easy access to Cabot Circus and a very pleasant resident late night bar in which we had a night cap. The beds were of the sink-into-able kind, with a hot-hot-hot power shower for £70 for two people. To get the best deal, do a bit of internet shopping rather than booking direct - and make sure you go to the right hotel!

We really enjoyed returning to the hotel after dinner and having a pimms in the lounge (which was a first for my wife) while chatting with other guests doing the same. The breakfast was quite nice the next morning. The only negative we found was that on the day we were there was a heat wave and no AC in the room. Our lovely view had to be shaded in the afternoon when the sun was beating through the window. And the bed was small, yet firm, which I've found in England to be the norm. I'd definitely go back. Just next time I'll ask if they have a King bed in any of the rooms, as I'm a big guy.
