This hotel is in an ideal location. It's walking distance to everything literally. We didn't have to move the car because right outside was a bus stop and to my left and my right were thrift stores, ample coffee shops, restaurants and the Harbor as this hotel is positioned right in city centre. I will only stay here next time I am in Bristol which will be this spring. We didn't not try the Michelin star restaurant for exploring the city and eating out however the bar was lovely. Marcel one of the bartenders although they closed at 11 if we were still enjoying ourselves along with other patrons he would keep the bar open longer; so accommodating. Also there were times I had leftovers that I would wake up wanting and the front desk would warm them up for me. Our room was clean and even when sleeping in it didn't matter that I got up after 2pm they still ensured our bedding was changed and fresh towels. This place is gorgeous bummer that they no longer have the spa and pool on the ground level but I understand it can be pricey to maintain. read more

My stay here was deeply undignified, which I had a chilling premonition of through the greeting I received (or should I say lack thereof) by the young woman on the reception desk. She was eating celery sticks, and staring at something on her screen; hopefully nothing obscene, but who can say with these kinds of people? Anyway, she appeared not to have noticed me so I clacked my heels on the floor, and the reverberating echo which rippled through the foyer startled the lass and she quietly screamed. After she had recovered from her shock, she had become angered, and made little effort to conceal it. I told her that I was here for a hotel room and she said "yes I think I figured that part out thanks" before typing with her keyboard. Eventually she assigned me to a room without saying anything else to me, just handing the key card over without another word. The key card was greasy and almost slid out of my hand. That did mean that it slid into the sensor with ease, however, so this I cannot complain about. That being said, I would have probably preferred to have just stayed in the hallway and tried my luck with the mercy of the other guests. The room was about as sanitary as a swamp on a humid summer day, and I tried to make sure that I did not touch any of the surfaces as they looked diseased. The bed had a disturbing morphology and, upon further inspection, I found it's undulating crevices to be distressed. There was also a dead bee in the sink. I put the bee out of the window to decompose in the natural world, but then I could not close the window no matter how hard I pulled. My room had suddenly become an access-all-hours, free-for-all for the opportunists of society. You won't be surprised to learn that I didn't sleep very much on the lumpen, deformed and gravelly mattress. I decided to purchase the breakfast buffet, and went down to the restaurant area wearing a business woman outfit and heels so no one would question why I was dining alone. I should have turned around and sought alternative victuals after glimpsing the wretched nature of the diners. Their levels of physical fitness and mental acuity were subterranean, which reflected poorly on the breakfast foods. The scrambled eggs were fibrous, and the coffee that I had been so foolish as to sample tasted as if it had been brewed in a nuclear reactor. I knew at this point that I needed to get out of the hotel as soon as possible and never return. read more

Somebody needs to devise a "Provincial Hotel Rating." The Royal is not a gitzy big-city hotel for the young-and-too-busy. But for those sensible enough to prefer hotels with some dignity and class, this is it! I have stayed before, and was as pleased this time as last: good location a few steps from the cathedral and a short walk to the river and all the historic ships, but above all friendly, helpful staff, biggish and clean rooms, quiet. Restaurant staff might be better organized, but I will certainly stay here when next I have a chance to visit this delightful city! One reviewer commented unfavorably about the hotel's layout; it is a bit wonky, but this is part of the hotel's history as it has been added onto over the century-plus of its existence. The first time I stepped foot inside the Royal Marriott Hotel I made the awfully embarrassing mistake of thinking that I had paid just £30 to stay in these magnificent lodgings. (I was, in fact, booked in at The Marriott Bristol City Centre - two very different establishments). I vowed that I would go back under much better circumstances! And so I was thrilled when for my birthday I was bought one night at the Royal Marriott. Immediately it's easy to notice how much more efficient and friendly the service is. We were booked in quickly, our bags taken by a porter and asked about our stay - three things that were missing from our stay at The City Centre hotel. And this was just in the lobby! Once we got to the room with its softer than soft pillows and hot, steamy (steady on) shower I was in hotel heaven. Even though I didn't pay for the room I have it on good authority that a bargain can be had by scouring the internet and not booking directly (although these offers are few and far between). A standard guest room booking directly from the hotel will cost around £100 - which is arguably worth it. read more

One of Bristol's best 'chain' hotels, in an enviable position on College Green, next to the Cathedral and City Hall, and perfectly placed for the night life around Bristol Harbour. The building itself is a very impressive piece of Victorian architecture, and is listed at Grade II. Built in 1863-8, by the architect W H Hawtin, it is a confident exercise in Italianate, executed in limestone, with an imposing, symmetrical façade. The interior was heavily refurbished in 1991 and again in 2008, and features some impressive function rooms, including a grand palm court. As you'd expect, rooms (over 200) and service are pretty good, and there are lots of facilities for business travellers, although I can't comment on the restaurant as I've not eaten here apart from breakfast. I recently attended a large conference here, which all went flawlessly (ie no problems with the sound and IT equipment) - a first for me! read more

Hotel has its own parking which is the same price as the other car parks close by so recommend using the hotel parking directly and taking the lift up to the hotel. Close to Bristol Cathedral and the harbor including many restaurants and movie theaters close by. If you're gonna visit Bristol this is the place to stay. read more

Beautiful, old hotel. Lovely. Doormen were polite. Front desk could be somewhat reserved but we're super friendly & helpful when approached. The morning breakfast buffet was superb. Plenty of choices and appreciated the offer of tea or coffee as soon as we sat down. Housecleaning was on point except once when they entered our room although sign was up for privacy. Loved the shortbread cookies they left. Once we got chocolates. Also ate at the bar, ordered a hamburger, was delicious and the bar men were friendly. Once we ordered room service, everything was correct & service was really prompt. Room was clean, smallish but this is Europe. Walls were thin, could hear guy snoring next door. Overall, a fantastic stay in Bristol for two weeks. A really centrally located hotel. Very close to good restaurants, family friendly activities (@bristol, aquarium) and bus lines. The Bristol Marriot Royal Hotel is one of the best Bristol has to offer. It really is set in such a good location, right next to Bristol Cathedral and College Green, and at the base of Park Street. In fact it is so posh there is even a statue of Queen Victoria as you step out of the grand front doors. If it's luxury you want, it's luxury you will get. It comes at a heafty price of roughly £100 a night (and that's if you are lucky - prices sore at the weekends and special occasions). Rooms are grand as you would expect, but they're not amazing. I would recommend the suites (if you have the money!) as they really are amazing. Expect to be treated like the queen in here with every staff member acting on their very best behaviour. Food is also good here, but I would suggest getting out of the hotel and seeing some sights for lunch and dinner. read more

You can tell the hotel is a little old, but they have quality service. Their breakfast buffet (which was complimentary) is pretty amazing and I would come here just for that. During check-in, they gave us two free drink vouchers that we could use at the bar near the lobby. Great location-it's near the university of Bristol. I think this place recently went up from Marriott category 5 to category 6. Our room was very spacious, even the bathroom was pretty large! I would definitely stay here again. read more

This Hotel is a large and very plush-looking. I have not stayed here but did go to a Christmas Meal with my work at the Marriott. The decorations were nice and the venue looked good. I was disappointed with the food that was served, it was dry and the vegetables were undercooked. I know that when meals are cooked in bulk the quality is never that good but I expected more from the Marriott. The drinks were also really expensive so after the wine that was served with the meal was finished, I couldn't afford to drink any more! read more

We stayed here in September and as we arrived fairly late in the evening we were upgraded to a suite. The room was lovely although the entry-card to the room didnot work and had to be reset twice. The bathroom was gorgeous and the bed comfortable but it was very noisy, perhaps because it was a Saturday night? as there appeared to be a disco either in the hotel or next door which didnot stop until after midnight. I have only been inside to pick up friends staying there, but my impressions are all good. Their room was comfy and of a high standard, though no one had told them that opening the refrigerator incurred a charge even if they didn't use anything from it (the front desk refunded the charge). they also had a key card problem, but this was swiftly resolved. It's a beautiful building in a good central location, next to the Bristol Cathedral and College Green. The shopping areas of Broadmeads, Park Street, Cabot Circus and the waterfront are all close by or a short walk away. My friends raved about the breakfast they had every morning and had nothing but positives regarding the staff and service. I would be happy to recommend this as a hotel option if staying in bristol. read more

Lovely hotel. The building is very nice, and everything is spacious and well decorated. There is a small gym with swimming pool in the basement which is nice to let off some steam. Fantastic decor and what a lovely hotel with a good swimming pool and steam room to relax so everything you would be looking for? Well why only the 3 star rating? Well all the stars are for the hotel. The service was very bad, we understood that there was a wedding in the same two nights that we stayed there but it was just so below par, after a comfortable sleep in a excellent bed and lovely room we went out to explore and find somewhere to have coffee and some brunch. This was at 10am that we left our room. We returned at about 3pm so were out for most of the day and our room had still not been serviced. We let the front desk staff know and they did gave us two tickets for drinks in the lounge, again lovely sitting in front of a big marble fireplace with my latte and paper and my wife with her glass of wine and book but after an hour and the room still not done well its now nearly 5pm and no room serviced and its time to get ready for dinner. Cannot review food as we asked about a table and got told one restaurant was being used for the wedding party and the other was closed, again not a big deal, we booked a table at a place recommended by a friend, but on leaving the hotel for dinner and passing by the apparently closed restaurant we found it was actually open. All in all a fantastic and historic looking hotel but dont book when a wedding party is there or you may not be noticed by the staff and not be able to make the most of the stay. read more

Hotel itself, front desk, and bellman are very nice. I asked for adjoining room, they tried to accommodate. Unfortunately, nothing was available on the arrival day. Front office agent, he tried at his best. And asked us if we were mind to move the next morning. They were happy to move our stuffs while we were outside. That's super!! Same thing with bellman, he was very helpful. He helped us with all the baggages for 2 rooms at totally different floors. Thump up for these incredible services. Rooms were very clean and huge. Nothing to be complained. However, one last star I think something is needed to be addressed. The restaurant staffs for the breakfast shift were super rush, no greeting, no smile on the faces and super rush. Start from the host, not even say good morning. No smiling, I believed she might need to get train how to be a host, first step in nothing was impressed. We had breakfast not even 30 mins, food still on my plate. She just came and tried to take it! Excuse me?!? Terrible!! Used to see other properties best reviews for over all staffs, but over here guess what not Marriott's brand. read more

We have never stayed at this hotel, but we have enjoyed sitting in one of the large rooms that flank the lobby, to enjoy drinks. The coffee is illy, and is complemented by shortbread biscuits or chic-chip cookies. You can sit by the real fire and relax in a peaceful room that looks out over College Green. It's a nice alternative to a bustling coffee shop and makes you feel quite recharged! read more

Great old-style grand hotel in a fab location with huge rooms and good service. The free wifi is sporadic at best which is pretty annoying. Based on other reviews, I was really looking forward to breakfast. However, the buffet area was totally inadequate for the number of guests and the servers were in constant motion and still failing to keep items replenished. The short order cook was overwhelmed with orders and the wait was 20-30 mins. The pastries were stale and tasteless and the cooked breakfast unappetising with floppy, wet bacon and pale set scrambled eggs. The bread ran out and didn't get replaced the whole time we were there. The yoghurt granola pots looked nice but the 'fruit' turned out to be sweet syrup like you get on icecream. The coffee was obviously old and had had been cooking to bitterness on a hot plate. This may be a 4* hotel, but a 1* breakfast. read more

We stayed here little over a month ago. Nice place. On arrival we were very nicely, and swiftly, dealt with. However, the room we were given had a double bed not twin beds as requested. This confusion arose as a result of our booking having been made through an agent (online) rather than directly. Even so - not ideal. That said, it wasn't the end of the world. Breakfasts were out of this world and the waiting and lobby staff were really lovely. All in all, no complaints and a very pleasant stay to report. Worth the 4 stars. read more

Lovely old building, smack on in the centre of Bristol, next door virtually to the Cathedral (well worth a visit). Spacious, comfortable and opulent public areas and well appointed bedrooms (all what you'd expect in a 4* international hotel). Breakfast is good, with a very good choice of items and eggs prepared by a chef in front of you. I had a meal as part of a function and the food was reasonable, as one would expect in an establishment of this kind, though probably bordering on prosaic. There is a good underground car park too, which is always a bonus in the centre of a busy city. I can't give it 5 star; it's a business hotel, it offers all the 4* services you'd expect, but impersonally, so 4* it is, and 4* it gets. PS) I forgot to say that their public loos are a bit run down. This is especially important if you are attending functions as you are otherwise less likely to use them. A lick of paint and some better housekeeping would definitely be in order, which is a disappointment for a place of this kind. read more

I am very sadden to write such a review. As a lifetime Titanium member with over 1360 nights in the last 5 years at a Marriott, this hotel is by far the worst managed property of all. A disabled family member traveled with me, a staff member refereed to him with very hurtful words, I immediately notified the GM, he refused to take action. On a follow-on stay the poor construction caused thousands of dollars of damage to my personal property, the hotel agreed to pay, sadly it has been over 8 weeks and still no payment. The hotel Finance Manager and GM find new excuses everyday why payment cannot be made. This is not the hotel you should choose. Staff is extremely rude and unhelpful. Many other choices in the area. read more

The leisure facilities (pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room) were a perfect place to spend some time relaxing after walking round all day. This Marriot Hotel is set just off the main shopping streets in Bristol towncentre. It has it's own private carpark for guests, but it is very central for public transport and most places are reachable just by walking. The Hotel is very castlelike and really beautiful to look at. The interior is very luxurious and the staff are very accomodating and warm. Rooms are fairly large and in many Four poster beds are standard with lovely dark wood furniture to set off the colours of the decor, they all have lovely all white bathrooms with power showers. The restaurant is very large and they do a lovely buffet style breakfast. The Hotel has a large sweeping staircase to the first floor as well as lifts also. The only downfall is this hotel often accomodates stag and hen parties and unfortunately we were on the first floor so you can get some noise when people are going back to there rooms. But apart from that a wonderful Hotel, serving lovely food which makes it a really luxurious weekend away. read more

Grand old hotel with charming atmosphere and excellent location within walking distance of major Bristol sights (right beside the Cathedral, good restaurants, shopping, and a few minutes walk from the waterfront). Extremely comfortable beds and pillows (many people at our reunion made the same comment), good size rooms, wonderful breakfast buffet, and competent friendly staff. Free lobby WiFi for all and free in-room WiFi for Marriott Rewards Club Members (get code from front desk.) Huge long bathtub with great water flow from shower. They upgraded us (without additional charge) because we arrived early for our reunion and this room happened to be available. Really nice people at the front desk took the time to find us something so we wouldn't have to wait to move in. Our room had robes, slippers, great smelling shampoo, and even Q-tips in the bathroom. Hotel handled our sit-down reunion dinner well, including having a supervisor watch over the dinner deliveries to each table to make sure that the special orders were correct. Only suggestion for improvement would be to have both of the taps in the bathroom sink empty through a single faucet/tap (so that the hot and cold water can mix) instead of using the old English method of having a separate faucet/tap for each of hot and cold water (contemplating that the user will fill up the sink from both taps and only then wash). I burned myself trying to wash my hands from the hot water tap in the sink. It was great to have lots of flowing hot water in the shower and bath (in those cases, the water combined with the cold water into a single stream). In sum, If you enjoy grand old hotels with great amenities, atmosphere, and service, then you will love this one. If, on the other hand, you are seeking a sleek modern venue with all new carpets and a nightclub feel, this would not be for you. read more

Very comfortable rooms and a great breakfast buffet. Good facilities too - swimming pool, underground garage, etc. Four stars rather than five, because this hotel suffers from annoying little things (e.g. plenty of bath gel and conditioner but no shampoo in the bedroom) and we heard rather too many people at the reception desk making complaints about niggly things that a hotel of this calibre ought to have RIGHT. This is not helped by the fact that a lot of the staff on the reception desk look as if they are trainees from other Marriott hotels around the world and they deal with the complaints in 'Marriott-speak'. Our booking was a bit complicated and was poorly handled over the telephone by someone whose English was not up to standard. By contrast the local UK staff are very good. Too many things are just not up to standard, and the result is that you feel frustrated. However, this a fantastic location and a wonderful city and we WOULD stay here again. read more
