Flavorful and complex curry that did not taste like it was from a box, and tender chicken with a perfect and not overly greasy breading. The ramen was large and had a plentiful amount of toppings and excellent noodles as well as the usual pork. The interior is simple with largely long shared tables and friendly staff. Cute little place tucked in the first floor of a skyscraper just past Pyrmont Bridge. Ramen was fabulous, got the right chew with a rich tonkatsu broth. The black garlic one had a generous amount of the paste. The spicy ramen was very spicy as advertised. Our server was nice enough to bring us extra chili oil in case it was not spicy enough, and we actually did not need to use it. I really wanted to try the small curry bowl, and even asked the cashier his thoughts about it, but he forgot to put in the order. Although can be tricky to find if finding for the first time (tucked away further in from the major street and in a nicely lit alley) the establishment was overall wonderful. Pay and order before sitting down, it is more like a quick meal. There are big tables and counters so if it is busy you may have to share your eating area or sit next to a stranger. The ramen noodles had a great taste, the broth was very flavorful (a tad bit salty) and the toppings were all great (nice ramen eggs as well) The curry had a lot of flavor and the chicken had a nice soft interior with a crisp light panko exterior. We ate here soon before it closed at 2:30 and we got seated and ordered quicky. The staff was nice and efficient. The cold Asahi beer on tap was good. It had the ramen noodle soup and karagi chicken. The restaurant is near the crossway near Darling Harbour on the way to Seaworld. It is located near office area and a little difficult to find. Food was good but a bit pricy. Coming from San Francisco, I was excited to see a location in Sydney with lots of Yelp reviews since the community doesn't seem to be as active here. Came in with high hopes for the place, and that was Menya's undoing. For the location, I think this is a fine place to have a quick lunch. I ordered the karaage ramen with shoyu broth. The broth was fine, if a bit thin. The chicken was a tad saltier than I like. I would have given them 4-stars based off of that. This places comes down to 3-stars for me because the noodles were very disappointing for the price. Perhaps I've been spoiled with the ramen options back in San Francisco, but the noodles here reminded me of the noodles I used to eat in my university days. Menya is a bit hidden and difficult to find, but when you get to the general area of where it's supposed to be, you'll see signs pointing you in the right direction. The atmosphere of the place is extremely casual; you place your order at the front and then seat yourself at one of the communal tables, the bar, or in the outdoor seating area. I ordered the Menya Ramen with tonkotsu, which was recommended to us by the cashier, and tonkotsu is my go-to broth for ramen. The piping hot bowls came out quickly, and before long, we were all digging in. The Menya Ramen has a little bit of everything -- chashu, a soft-boiled egg, fishcake, and seaweed sit on top of a pile of perfectly-cooked ramen noodles. The broth itself isn't the very best tonkotsu I've ever tasted, but it certainly packed a lot of flavor and ranks pretty high on my list. Holy shit, the wafu shoyu!!! My first slurp of the broth and I was sold. The chicken and seafood mix is so damn tasty! This may even rival my favourite akamaru shinaji at Ippudo. The egg was the best seasoned I've ever had and the noodles had a good bite to them as well. This bowl of ramen was the best I've had in a while in my recent quest for great ramen in the city. Tucked behind 1 Market St, Menya Japan Noodle Bar City boasts a variety of different ramens on the menu. They also serve different udons and bento boxes that are both tasty. Obviously the main focus on Menya is ramen and they do a pretty legit job with it. I personally have fallen in love with the Chili Beef Ramen (Natural - Salt) and I seriously get it every time I go to Menya. Not for the faint of heart, it packs a bit of heat but nothing too crazy. Plenty of beef and chili to coincide with a very tasty broth (which you can choose as most have different varieties). The noodles are firm, but not in a crunchy sense but more of a strong noodle that I prefer compared to super soft noodles. Lunch during the week can be pretty hectic as seating is super abundant. There is some outdoor seating which definitely helps. If you're a fan of ramen then this is a must try spot, but I believe the original Menya in Chinatown is slightly better. Came here with my coworker right at 12PM and there was already a queue! Glad we came early. A girl came around and wrote everyone's order down on a piece of paper, so it was efficient. I ordered the menya ramen with miso and changed the noodle to soba, which was a dollar extra. My coworker got the veggie ramen with soba noodles and we shared the agedashi tofu. It's cash only so make sure you got some! The ramen came out within a few minutes. I tried a bit of my friend's ramen, she got it with the natural salt soup. It was tasty. My ramen was good but really salty. I can't say I absolutely loved it, but maybe I ordered the wrong thing? The agedashi tofu came out and it was good but really salty as well. I do like this place, lotsa good things on the menu. Maybe will try the tonkatsu ramen next time. I've found with ramen places, there's always one, ultimate yummy ramen. Thanks to some yelp reviews I decided to checkout this hidden gem tucking inconspicuously between to buildings that just happened to be between the train station and my hotel one night. Firstly the place has all the stuff you love to see in a noodle shop, simple menu, with at a couple of customization options and easy ordering at the door as you walk in was a bonus. Once seated you sit on large communal tables at the benches along the walls, the serving staff then proceed to bring out your order as it is prepared. If you're looking for good ramen at cheap prices in the city, Menya fits the bill perfectly. For the $11.90 I paid, I certainly got my money's worth. Noodles cooked just right with a perfectly cooked yolk (orange and just set), slices of pork, a serving of shallots, and black garlic oil in rich, flavoursome broth. Plus it arrived in around 6 minutes from when I ordered! My only complaint on the food would be that the pork slices had big rims of fat - so there was more fat than pork, but fatty pork is normal in ramen. The restaurant is self-service - order at the counter, take a number and find a seat. Water is self-service from the water fountain. Service is minimal, they take your order and present you with food politely. Restaurant is small, maybe can hold 30 at maximum capacity. Hidden under a office block, this Japanese casual noodle bar is very popular. On the time I went, there was already a queue of 4 tables before the dinner service starting time of 6pm. The layout is made up of huge tables and bar style seating inside and a few tables of 2-3 outside. KARAGE RAMEN They were generous with the chicken, although I'm not a fan of them serving it in the soup, I guess that's the tradition. Noodles were nice with a bite to them. The only big mistake was a long hair found in the soup. MENYA RAMEN (SET MEAL) The only slice of pork in it was very delicious and the egg was also pretty good. When I looked at Yelp for ramen options; Menya came up tops above Ippudo Sydney. I tried Ippudo two days before hence gave Menya a try. We ordered the 'Black Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen'. The tonkotsu broth with balanced, not overwhelmingly thick-ish like a stew and very flavoursome yet not heavy on saltiness. This place was everything I didn't know I wanted. I ordered the Menya Ramen (the first item on the menu) with pork and it was soooooo delicious. The pork fell apart, it was a perfect balance of noodles and toppings and soup. The seaweed was an extra nice touch. Husband had fried chicken udon and enjoyed it. We split edamame. Found myself in the mood for ramen again today and decided that Menya might be worth a visit (been here many times before). As I can not help but compare the ramen available in Sydney to that of Japan, it is always a hit and miss affair (but mostly miss). Today unfortunately was not the best example of ramen I have had here. It was not without positive aspects. The noodles were great (kata-men) and the place was packed. If you come here for lunch you should really expect a long line (unless you get take-away). But while I was happy with the noodles, the soup (tonkotsu base) was too salty and the chashu part (roast pork slices) of the chashumen was really disappointing. Normally on a chashumen the ramen soup is basically hidden beneath the juicy slices of roast meat. Today... not only were there no full slices, it felt like I was given the left over pieces. If this were my first time here I would likely not come back, but I know these guys can do better, and finding good ramen joints can be a challenge. Yum yum yum. Menya is one of those places in China Town that someone needs to tell you about if you're wanting to find a good meal. It's off the beaten track - hidden away from main mall and Paddys Markets. As you walk in - you're greeted with the traditional Japanese welcome. On the wall is a GIANT menu of many many choices for noodle soups and a few Japanese extras. I'm pescetarian, so my choices are limited...so I always go for the vegeterian soup with Tofu. ($7.90) The helpings are HUGE and there's no way you'll be hungry after eating this giant bowl of noodle goodness. Everyone sits and a giant communal table and all you can hear are the slight slurps of the other patrons. I come here and it reminds of the narrow "ramen lane" in Kyoto where I slurped my way through my big bowl of butter and corn ramen. Not for the atmosphere obviously but the texture of the ramen certainly. The soup is a bit lighter, but I actually prefer it that way rather than the thicker, meater base that I see at other more "authentic" ramen places. There is also less meat but I actually prefer that too, so this is my place to go for comfort food. Tips? Weekday lunch-time is a bad time, especially in winter when the wind-tunnel effect comes into play and you have to wait outside. I used to work across the road from this place and I would always have to rush over at 12noon in order to get a seat at the communal tables without a long wait. The takeaway food (ie katsu-don, kaarage-don etc) is average, considering this is a noodle bar. I usually get the tonkatsu ramen, but I might try the chilli one next time and see what that is like. Want a D&M chat? This is not the place as it is really noisy. Its more of a quick office lunch-time joint as its in the vicinity of CBA, PWC and other professional firms. I also had the green tea slushie, which turns out to have little balls of jelly in it; tasty but a stranger texture than I expected! Watch out for the spicy dishes if you're sensitive, Japanese curry may be bland but Menya's 'dynamite spicy' dishes have a decent level of heat. This basically means that you're left queuing outside (especially crappy if it's winter) while everyone in front umms and ahhs about what they want, slowed down even more by those who aren't expecting to suddenly have to grab a menu and decide on the spot. I don't expect anyone to be passionate about waitressing, but the staff here really couldn't care less. Other people's food was brought to our table more than once, and when our food arrived the waitress didn't even bother to ask who was having what, she just dumped the food on the table and walked off. I had the Cha-Shu Lover's Ramen at the recommendation of the girl taking the orders and holy cow, I have never seen any ramen place in NYC give as much roast pork as the bowl I got here. I usually like my broth very rich, while this place would be at around a 7 on a scale of 1-10 in terms of richness. The noodles were firm for my liking and overall very tasty. With the weather being a bit cooler today my lunch buddy wanted something nice and warm. What better way to satisfy our tummies by heading to Menya. Nestled between a bar and a car park, I ordered a chilli beef don with miso soup. My friend ordered a bowl of tonkatsu ramen. We paid for our meals and sat down at one of the long tables. By the time I had split open my wooden chopsticks, the waiters came to our table with our meals. OMG the meals came out faster than my local McDonald's. The beef was cooked to perfection on a bed of fluffy Japanese rice soaked in the soy dashi stock it simmered in. The fresh chillies were piled on top with a side of pickled ginger to cleanse the palate. Oh I love Japanese rice, because of the stickiness you can easily stack each component and pick it up with your chopsticks for one mouthful. Nom nom nom... Only negative is I felt kinda rushed out of the place. Understanding this place is small, their model is really come in, eat, and then out. I love this little place! It's hidden on the corner of Market and Kent street but is defiantly one of my most favourite places to visit. They have lots on the menu but the dish that keeps me coming back is the chilli beef ramen. It's nice and spicy which is how I love my ramen! It's pretty cheap and they also offer set menus where you choose your ramen and then 2 extra sides. That all costs you $15 The only thing I don't particularly like about Menya is that it is only cash only. Many times I could have stopped in but won't because I don't have cash. There are ATMs that are quite close This places has queues out the door particularly at lunch and at the beginning of dinner. Every person I bring here absolutely loves it and are not disappointed.
