Over the last few months I've had a couple less than satisfying experiences with Menards as a whole - including but not limited to, my Menards account being compromised and my card information stolen and used to purchase almost $1000 in items in store. Then most recently, I purchasing an item online with one description, and when receiving it, it being different than advertised. Every time I've attempted to reach out to any employee within the Cedar Falls store specifically regarding any issue or concern I've had, I've received the most atrocious customer service. While I understand that certain situations can't necessarily be handled at a store level - there are certain things that can be done when you're working with someone face to face - minimally some empathy, or an apology for the inconvenience. My experiences have always handled by the employees I've worked with by defensiveness, surface level service, and empty words. I've never received any actual SERVICE when it comes to dealing with issues in store. I personally worked in customer service for 15+ years. Almost a decade of that as a customer experience manager at a retail store - so trust me when I say that I understand certain things are out of a workers control, even a managers control. But, there are many things that can be controlled. One of those things is how you handle yourself at your job, and during specific situations. After coming in to the store today to attempt to deal with a situation of a defective item - I left the counter frustrated (with no resolution). As I am still in the store, I see the manager I was just dealing with walk directly from our encounter over to a coworker and give them the 'eyes' and have some words that I can only image was about the 'difficult' customer that she was just dealing with. I'm going to assume she didn't realize that I observed this (because that's better than the alternative that she just didn't care). It really does blow my mind how someone can provide the bare minimum amount of customer service and then when a customer walks away frustrated at that bare minimum service they've received, an employee has the audacity to roll their eyes as if they had done all they could do, with the implication that the customer is being irrational. I'm a younger person that works really hard for what I have - so when the issues I've had with Menards cost me around $1000 THIS YEAR alone, and no resolution has been provided, I guess I have to resort to Yelp reviews in the hopes that my concerns will be heard and addressed. read more

After several non-stellar experiences I'm updating my review from a five star to a three star. What topped it off was tonight's experience. A week ago my husband ordered an outdoor build it yourself fire pit on menards.com. Online it promised that we would have to load the blocks ourselves from the garden center but the fire ring and the adhesive tubes would be set aside for us at the back special order pick up in the lumber yard. Because we ordered online we had to go in and check in at the desk and get a print out of what we were picking up. At the desk two employees again said the fire ring and adhesive would be back in the lumber yard. After a long wait at the return desk for an even exchange and watching the crew leader show attitude to employees we drove around to get our fire pit materials. An employee helped load our blocks but said we would have to go back inside and get the ring and adhesive off the shelf. We asked about how we were told they would be set aside and he said they just grab them from the shelf. The guy said he'd grab the ring for us but my husband would have to go get the adhesive from the paint center. On the total opposite side of the store from the garden center. I waited in the truck with my son while they went to retrieve the items. My husband came back but the employee never did with the fire ring. So we had to again go find someone to figure out what was going on. They told us we'd have to go inside and retrieve it ourselves. At this point my husband was ticked. What's the benefit of ordering online for ease of pick up? Tonight's Menards visit was a complete waste of an hour and a half. read more

This is a great Menard's location. In fact, this is the first time that I've ever visited a Menards and figured out that I could possibly fall in love with shopping there. This is a brand new location, but despite that, it still has the interior "Menards" feel which means there really isn't much detail towards bright and cheery interior design or anything. However, it's a large location, they have a pretty huge selection. Lots of great items around to purchase. I found a lot of clearance things, and they had a lot of great sales going on. Right now, Menards seems to be doing a program similar to the "Register Rewards" at Walgreens. You purchase an item, submit a mail-in rebate, and they'll send you Menards credit. Menards has been doing great with this program, and most weeks, you can get free or very-cheap items such as pants, tumblers, or tools. I've been keeping an eye on the ads. This week, it's really-affordable LED light bulbs that actually mimic daylight colors. As a photographer, I'm seriously in love. Regardless of that, the entire location is actually pretty clean. Even for the items that were free or super cheap in the ad this week, on a Friday, they still had items available for purchase. The employees didn't proactively offer help (though one did greet me!), but they honestly seemed busy doing their own jobs. When I couldn't locate something and asked someone for help, they seemed genuinely happy to help. They took me to the actual aisle even after my insistance that I would be fine with just general directions. My only complaint is that it's a bit difficult to navigate. They DO have store maps right near the front door that tells you all of the areas in case you're in a hurry. However, if I'm searching for something like the free dusting set on rebate this week, it's very, very hard to find. I didn't feel like I should have to ask an associate for the specific location of all items I wanted to purchase, but after looking near cleaning supplies, I still couldn't locate the item I wanted. Note: Right outside the location is a Roundabout. You'll need to use it in order to make it into Menards. This Menards is located near the Wal-Mart, Culver, Target, McDonalds, etc. that's on the outside of Cedar Falls. Final thoughts: Great, great location. Surprisingly busy for a Menards, but since the store is so gigantic, you honestly don't feel like it's too busy. I could do without the roundabout outside it, and it's honestly the busiest roundabout I have to use (which is weird, but it is), but the store itself is amazing for a home improvement place. This one will easily be my go-to store in the area. read more

The quality the the products carries and customer service provided has consistently declined in the 15 years we've been adults shopping there. Tonight I've HAD IT!!! If you seek knowledgeable and helpful staff, keep going. I've had employees who are labels as asst department leads repeatedly be the worst!! Why support a company who promotes the poor examples of customer service. We now call them walmart of the home Improvment world and I will drive further and pay a little more to avoid the aggravation this shopping experience has continually brought me. read more

I love Menards! That being said, over the last year I am not sure if the management has changed or what but the customer service is horrible. I shop here at least a couple of times a week and when they first opened, reps actually made eye contact with you and wanted to help. Now it seems they are more interested in talking to each other or sticking with stocking shelves. This is not a one time experience but now is the norm; so much so that I often joke with my family about the lack of service. The other night I went in and one register was open for a line of 6 people. There were three associates behind the desk and one finally came over with a look of disgust that he had to actually work. I hope Menards steps it up because once there is competition closer then Waterloo, they will not do well at all. Very sad. read more

I ordered a couple doors from this store a couple weeks ago because they don't carry most things in stock. As it turned out I had to return the door because it didn't fit. My experience at Lowes and Home Depot in similar situation has been much different. At Menards, they charged me a $36 fee for returning it, even if I were to get a door of a different size. I should also say that for the same door, it was considerably cheaper at Lowe's, plus they honor 10% military/law enforcement discounts, unlike Menards, which has their rip-off 11% rebate (aka in-store credit) program, which takes 3 months to get anyway. I'll also say that the customer service in general is less than satisfying at Menards as their employees are few and far between. On the off chance you should encounter an employee, in my experience has been less than desirable. They seem to constantly avoid having contact with customers at all costs. Very frustrating! I'm just not a fan of Menards, period. I also recently learned that they tend to carry the lower quality products compared to the other stores. Two employees at this location went out of their way to help me find what I needed and also calculated the approximate amount required for my project. They looked into other materials as well that could also work, yet save me money. I have never had such thorough customer service. They have now earned a loyal customer, and I will spread the word to my friends. read more

Mostly, I've had reasonable experiences at Menards. However, we purchased the Riverstone quartz countertops for 2 bathrooms, less than 3 years ago. We have found the surface has deteriorated in several places near the sink/around the faucets. It appears to be due to just water sitting on it. The sinks have been maintained by cleaning with water. After we noticed the problem, we followed manufacturer's recommendations on cleaning with soap, nothing abrasive. The surface in these areas is rough and not smooth and shiny (like it was originally) compared to other areas on the same countertop. The manufacturer (owned by Menards) offered to replace them but they do not cover any labor or materials to reinstall. That is a large amount of money to replace something like this in 2 bathrooms. These were sold as something that would last years and years. We figured with quartz, they should last at least 30 years or more. Why would I replace quartz countertops at my expense with the same product that lasted less than 3 years? I would most likely be doing it again at my expense in 3 years. The manufacturer's warranty is essentially worthless to me. read more
