A standard left axilla ultrasound does not include your shoulder or back. An axilla ultrasound focuses strictly on the armpit area (the axillary hollow). Its primary purpose is to evaluate the lymph nodes, soft tissues, blood vessels, and any palpable lumps or fluid collections located directly under the arm. While the axillary region is anatomically located where the arm meets the shoulder and chest wall, the technician will not image the structures of your shoulder joint (such as the rotator cuff tendons) or your back muscles unless your doctor specifically orders separate tests, such as a shoulder ultrasound or a soft tissue ultrasound of the back. From a billing and medical coding standpoint, the imaging center is incorrect. An axilla ultrasound and a shoulder ultrasound have completely different CPT codes (the standardized numbers used for billing insurance). They are distinct tests. If the technician scanned your shoulder without an order, the facility cannot simply rename it or group it under your axilla order to force you to pay for their mistake. The billing person or manager you are speaking to is using flawed anatomical logic to cover up a scheduling or technician mistake. While it is true that the tissues, muscles, and blood vessels of the armpit (axilla) physically connect to the arm and shoulder, medical billing and coding do not care about physical connection. They care about standardized CPT codes.An axilla ultrasound is billed under a specific soft-tissue or lymph node code. A shoulder ultrasound is billed under a completely different musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound code. They are separate procedures requiring different imaging angles, different machine settings, and entirely different clinical training to interpret.

He spoke with Sue Teeter the COO who agreed with him to not waive the fee. This was not the first bad experience I've had with this company. NEVER AGAIN!

LOL…read more The truth is the angry screaming woman refused service because she didn't like the fact I wouldn't get on the table; I needed to sit in the chair as I was not feeling well due to a suspected ear infection. These people are angry that you're even there, and it's evident as soon as you walk in the front door. They provide masks and insist you wear them the entire time there. Then I was told 45 minutes later they couldn't complete my exam. Shame on you both. You should have known in the first 10-15 minutes that it wasn't going to work. After waiting a few minutes the operator and another employee came in saying that BCBS Medicare insurance wasn't going to approve the scan for today. I would have to reschedule. What about my copay? The woman said they could hold it until the rescheduled date or they would refund it. I got angry and frustrated with this situation and blew up at the young woman. I am very sorry that I did that to her and I'm not happy with my conduct toward her. I simply didn't tell her this is the 3rd time in the last month I've been rescheduled. I want the scan done in a timely way. The last scan 7 months ago revealed a mass and my doctor ordered the scans to be done every 6 months. We're behind. I took the young lady's advice and rescheduled for November 5. I didn't ask for the copay refund. The young lady offered to handle the reschedule but in my anger I wouldn't let her. I called Chattanooga imaging after I cooled down. Patient's need to have patience.
