We were looking for a place to eat after a road trip to the Rhyolite ghost town from Las Vegas. Beatty is the closest city to Rhyolite and we were starving. Researched the eating establishments in the area and Mel's Diner had decent ratings on Yelp. We entered the diner and noticed the eclectic decorations. It is a small establishment that takes cash only. Waitress was friendly. We ordered a salad and 2 sandwiches. Food is typical diner food and okay. In a little town called Beatty that's between Las Vegas and Death Valley. It's not much from the outside (or the inside) but you get huge portions of diner-style food. My husband and I stopped here on our way back from visiting the Rhyolite Ghost Town and filled up on burgers, fries and chili. We had breakfast there. Food and prices were good. But it stops there. I went to use the "ladies" bathroom there and it was like a horror scene from a 1980's truck stop movie. I've never seen anything so bad. Does NEVADA not have health inspections? Do the employee really have a place to clean their hands??!! The pics will explain what I can't put into words. Whoever the owner is... you need to be a decent human being and clean up your bathrooms. There is no way that your employees are able to practice good law abiding food health code regulations! My husband and I stopped in this morning on our way to Oregon and we would definitely come back. My husband had the chicken fried steak breakfast and I had the Denver omelette. Both were excellent. We came here for brunch on recommendations by locals, and it turned out to be a truly satisfying meal. MUCH better then anything Denny's could offer! Mel's Diner is definitely a hole-in-the wall that looks to have been around for years, but I found this to be part of its appeal. Upon entering, we were told to sit anywhere we wanted. From the blue-checkered table cloth to the crooked Elvis and Marilyn pictures hanging on the far wall, this place gave off an old-timey, pleasant feel of nostalgia. Our server who manned both the bar and dining room could have stepped right out of the movie-set of a small rural town. She's a genuinely straight-forward and no-nonsense type of personality that took our orders efficiently and brought them out just as quickly. Luckily for us, we arrived just before 11:00 AM so we still got to order off the breakfast menu! Prices are extremely reasonable, and we got the following off the list of Breakfast Specials: 1) Omelet with green chile, came with hash browns, biscuit and country gravy ($7.00) - the biscuits (2 in a side-order) were really good!! 2) 16 oz Ham Steak - came with scrambled eggs, hash browns, and toast. ($8.50) 3) Coffee - came in a refill it yourself pitcher. A little light, but passable. Portions here are huge! We ate heartily to fuel up for our upcoming hike in Death Valley. This road-side diner in a tiny, middle-of-nowhere town managed to surprise us by filling our bellies with hot and tasty food. The waitress warned us the ham steak was going to be big, and it was! The restaurant is small but very bright and decorated with old pictures of the town and surrounding area. Really good diner food. We had a hankerin' for a good classic American breakfast and decided to try this place out, and were not disappointed. When I first walked in, I was instantly skeptical because it smelled of greasy oil, which made me worried everything would be greasy, dark with old burnt remnants of past meals, etc. But both of our meals were perfectly cooked, and even the bacon must have been dabbed with paper towels or something, about as oil free as possible. Hash browns cooked just the way i like them, crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. Our server was friendly, I suspect the older women some have complained about. A couple showed up with one of those rental vans painted in loud, crazy colors, and the server appeared horrified (yes, horrified!) to see it. When the couple came it, she was noticeably less friendly with them than she was with us. I suppose if I were that couple my experienced woudln't have been as good, but to be honest I found the whole thing amusing. I'd have no reservation coming back again if I stay in Beatty for another DV visit. read more

Worst quality food I have eaten in a very long time. Hamburgers and fries are one of the easiest foods to make but for some reason Mel's Diner got it all wrong from A to Z! The meat was ground up grizzle and the fries were the cheap frozen kind you get when you were in elementary school. The service was minimal and the bathrooms are outside where anyone can use. And they do. So these bathrooms are like a public restroom with half the cleaning. The only way they have any business is by preying on uninformed tourists. The waitress welcomed me and took my order immediately, she was very pleasant. Ham steak with two eggs, hash browns & biscuits n gravy for less than $10.00. The order arrived shortly with a genuine ham steak and eggs prepared to my liking. It was a bit more than I could eat, yet the price was under $10.00. If you have no choice, you can eat here and end up full. I strongly recommend that you buy an omelette with hash browns and biscuits and gravy, because these items are difficult to screw up and were pretty good. Do NOT order or consume for any reason any meat item (except bacon), pancakes, or really anything else. Everything I ate except for the eggs, potatoes, and biscuits was truly vile, at least from a fact-based perspective. You may enjoy the meat and pancakes more than I did, but that doesn't change the fact that they are below average gutter-grade diner fare and you have been warned. Ironically, when i was leaving, I noticed an empty Krusteaz just-add-water pancake mix box out by the dumpster... We ate here, on the Saturday morning, before Easter. It was super crowded. The first thing I noticed is that this place is clean - yes even the bathrooms. We sat at the counter and received excellent service. They didn't have any decaf coffee, so I walked across the street to our RV park and brought some back. What a pleasant surprise, when they agreed to brew a special pot. Mary was out waitress and even though she was getting slammed (waiting on 10 tables at a time) she remained calm and pleasant. They called another waitress in to help, when all the inside and outside tables filled up. This really is the only option around -- despite this -- they work really hard to provide good food at great prices. The experience and food is just great! P.S. This town only has 800 residents, so you are even going to find a convenience store anywhere close. Take my advice and fill up at Mel's! read more

Older waitress who 'greeted' us was what could only be described as rude. Never once had a smile, was incredibly short tempered with us, and when we said we'd need a few more minutes to choose just walked off without a word. Food: It was close to noon and unfortunately they only send breakfast til 11am. My husband was pretty bummed. Ordered a patty melt with fries (according to him SUPER salty). My son ordered a burger with fries ("meh.... bottom bun was soggy"). I ordered a BLT with fries. It was okay. Cash only. I wouldn't come again based on service. I would try Gema's for sure. read more
