I wanted really good pizza for Mother's Day and Mellow Mushroom in West Ashley did not disappoint! The restaurant is in what use to be the Avondale Theater, so the ceilings are super high. The wall art is funky, colorfull, and full of movie title puns. There is a great horseshoe shaped bar, a balcony seating area, and seating outdoors. Lots to choose from and definitely a great place for groups. Our server Margo was and is a gem! Outgoing, friendly and provided excellent service. Now to the food...WOW! We ordered the pretzel bites to start and they came out hot, fluffy and full of flavor. Our pizzas were the Holy Shiitake Pie, the Great White, Veg Out, and Pacific Rim. Yummy, yummy, yummy! Very disappointing! We had a party of seven with two separate checks. The first check was for two large pizzas, and the second was for one pizza and two half salads. The first pizza arrived with the salads, and about 20 minutes later, the second pizza came out. Our server never came back to check on us, so I finally went to find her and ask about the third pizza. She told me it must have gotten lost in the shuffle and that they would make it right away. I explained that we no longer had time because everyone had already finished eating. She said she would go see what she could do. After another 10 minutes, I had to go find her again to ask for the bill. We left very disappointed, not only because we never received our pizza, but also because of how the situation was handled. My family and I came in this past weekend. Service was good albeit slow considering the amount of patrons in the restaurant. Our server was attentive though. We ordered the holy shiitake pizza in large and a small French bread pizza for our child. Overall after tip the meal was nearly $50 which is reallllly overpriced. Mellow Mushroom has a nostalgia about it for me and my family. When my son comes home for a visit, he generally wants to go here. We always get the caesar pizza. It is a unique menu item for this location but other locations tend to know about it and can make it too if you ask for it 'off menu'. Next time I will try it with extra lettuce and extra tomato. Some of the food came before the drinks. The staff moved like they had anvils in their shoes. Worst service ever. Don't come here. My regret is that gratuity with parties is included - straight 20%. Medium sized Pepperoni and caramelized onions (which were basically non-existent) for $21. Cheap ingredients, pizza was total grease pit, and after two bites, I had to throw the whole mess into the trash. Raw dough from center to outer crust. I have had fond memories of visits to other Mellow Mushroom locations in several states and finally got around to trying the James Island, Charleston, SC location. Boy am I glad I did! Fast and friendly service and cheerful attitudes from several of the servers helped make our dining experience a positive one so naturally we WILL return! We did not expect such a grand interior when we walked into the environment. It was almost "arcade like" and quite fun... only to find out the space was originally used as a movie theater in the 1950's~ and is now decorated with red vinyl booths, pop art, film posters and large life-like refreshment concessions. This was my first time at the mellow mushroom in west Ashley. We normally go to the one in North Charleston by the tanger outlets. We were very dissapointed in this location. The service was slow to start. They brought us apps with no utensils. Then we ordered a large salad to share but they brought us the small- still no utensils. We got our pizza very fast and it was not crispy at all it tasted very chewy. It was a cool atmosphere and was a nice place to sit but the service knocked it down a few stars read more

We, love, Mellow Mushroom! We were sad to see the King Street location close, but still glad that we can pick up a pie when running errands in West Ashley. MM's Avondale location is a very cool, wide open "theatery" space. We've sat downstairs in the gallery and upstairs at the bar and enjoyed ourselves. Specifically, we love MM's commitment to crust (chewy, crunchy, and dense), thick pepperoni (JUST the right amount of spicy) and a high quality mozz (that gets just greasy enough). MM's success is due to their pizza making process, product, and "mellow" vibe. Ticket and pick-up times are always reasonable and the dining room is run well. The Avondale Mellow is efficient and geared for take-out. We look forward to our next MM pie! read more

We haven't been here in ages but it was kind of a last minute decision on the Forth of July. The place was pretty busy with take out due to the crazy storm we had midday, I'm sure it put a damper on many others grilling plans, as it did ours. Now I usually love me some weird bizarre pizzas usually, but I'm pregnant and for some reason just wanted plain ol' roni & cheese pizza! We ordered a large because I was being glutinous and wanted some for lunch the next day. I don't like wicked thick pizza as I'm from New England and well ya know, if ya know! Anyways, the waitress suggested thin crust after briefly explaining above.... When the pizza arrived it looked pretty thick, so I asked if this was the thin, she said because of it being hand tossed they can still end up "thicker" I should've asked for well done had I known cause it definitely could've been crispier, and the crust was a lot more than I'm used to but we used the marinara from the pretzel bites. Otherwise it was pretty amazing! We only could eat two slices each... and knowing I'd crispy the leftovers up just like we prefer the next day, I was already excited to have leftovers. We ordered carry out but our limited exposure to the service was very positive. Everyone was friendly and service was prompt. The ambiance seemed pleasant enough with a full bar and plenty of seating including some outdoor tables. The front entrance seemed a little odd because the space was so large and the desk / counter was set back but no big deal. The pizza we ordered was the house special without ham, ground beef or bacon (it was still loaded with pepperoni and sausage so plenty of meat). We love our crust crispy and well done - this was decent but next time I would reinforce that. The crust was a little thicker than I expected but the garlic butter and Parmesan sprinkled on top made it tasty and it didn't seem super doughy. The other toppings were sliced mushrooms, black olives, tomatoes, green peppers and sweet onions. The pizza sauce was a red sauce - tangy and not too sweet. And there were apparently two layers of mozzarella but it was hard to tell. Next time I'd probably ask for a little more generous vegetable topping and dial back sausage a little. Overall this was a good (not the best I've had) pie but if you are local to West Ashley then it is a solid option!! read more

Just ordered a couple of takeaway pizzas from Mellow Mushroom. Usually this place is decent but I don't know what happened this time. It's not even an off day, it's a Saturday. You couldn't tell anything was wrong with them up til getting home but the Havana pizza looks like it was cut by someone blindfolded, but at least it was cooked. The kosmic karma, which is usually my favorite looks like it maybe slid off the counter and was caught in the box. The crust was completely wet and uncooked in the middle and the toppings had all slid to the middle, some just had half marinara on the slices. It was a soggy mess, but it was already bought so I had to salvage it and throw it on the pizza stone at home just to see if it could be made eatable. Next time I'll just go to Paisanos. read more

We came for Father's Day and are still waiting for our appetizer we ordered with the kids meal. Our appetizer was never put in, nor our entrees. Our kids have finished their meals and we are still waiting for our adult food. The servers are blaming it on a catering order while other tables that came in after us are getting their food.
