I finally drove by the complex. I didn't even realize this was over here, and I'm literally two blocks away. They are postponing rentals for an indeterminate amount of time, I didn't feel like I got true or honest information about that. Josie kept referring to her boss, "the lawyer," as the reason they were not accepting move ins. I want to say I have spoken to her a few times over a month or so of apartment searching. Here's my takeaway: if they are always going to drop the "boss is a lawyer" bit, how awful is this place going to be to live? It seems ominous already and I don't even live there. I could lawyer up too (I have needed to before). But why would you want to put that energy out there. If a "lawyer" is taking actual months to draw up such an advantageous lease for them, where will that leave us? Up shit creek, that's where. I literally never have seen an apartment put move ins on hold to write up a more self serving lease. Josie seemed nice, but I felt put off ultimately by the constant "my boss is a lawyer," name dropping. I was told, no bankruptcies, period. Everyone says that. I had a hard time physically and lost a business. Hence, the bankruptcy, several years ago. My credit is solid now, really good. Most NORMAL people can figure that out. Then Josie says, "for 7 years or more." They clearly do not have a clue on what they are doing. After 7 years, you actually can file ANOTHER bankruptcy. Not that I'm planning on it, but that's what the 7 years mark is. I was really shocked that she didn't know the basics of that. My credit is good enough to obtain a mortgage at this point (I have spoken to a lender), but not rent at the Mellmanor. Maybe it's a nice place, I will never know. If I can do a zero star I would! Management sucks! They don't care about anyone but themselves. I've tried emailing and leaving voicemails and still get no call back. The "assistant manager" told me I would only get charge a $45 application fee and ended up getting charged x6 time that amount. This happened in December 2023 it is now February 2024 and I still haven't gotten a email back or a phone call back. Property manager will never answer the phone or give you a call back. read more

I have been living here for 17 years, most of them happy ones. Recently , there have been new owners that don't seem to care about the long time residents. We have never had designated parking spaces, handicap spaces for the residents, only in front of rental office for potential renters, I think. Oh, did I mention that I am 89 years old and I feel very unsafe every time I have to walk down the very big step to the parking lot . It would also be nice if there was some kind of bench or seat inside the doorway while you are waiting for a ride. I am also on Sec. 8 which Isn't really a concern of the new owners. Since March they have raised my rent from $1387 to $1735 and what part of this, Sec.8 will pay, I have no idea yet or if I can pay such a large increase. These people are gouging and greedy to an access. Needless to say , it will be messy and a detriment to my health if I am forced out under these circumstances, so be aware of these people and their way of doing business, only out for themselves and the devil with the tenents. read more

Mellmanor has been by far the most comfortable, and convenient place I have lived. My husband and I moved here in 2018, and we have never been more satisfied. The location is perfect, so close to the Grossmont shopping mall, and more! The property manager, Josie has always been so accommodating, and helpful. Anything we needed, she was there with a helping hand. I mean that literally! She would go above and beyond for us! I've never had a property manager as kind, and helpful as Josie!Mellmanor apartments is a beautiful place to live. I take my son on walks around the whole complex everyday. No issues with neighbors, location is great, if I ever needed anything Josie was on top of it, and it is such a quiet place to be. I recently had the opportunity to move into a house and so had to say goodbye to Mellmanor Apartments. I lived there for 10+ years. I absolutely loved my apartment. I had an incredible view and a balcony, which my cat also enjoyed. There have been a few different managers over the years, and I found them all to be very professional. The current manager, Josie, is not only professional but goes out of her way on a daily basis to make sure the tenants are happy. I have seen her working many times after hours, talking with neighbors who were not able to get to the office during normal business hours. She has gone out of her way on more than one occasion to bring me a package that had been delivered to the office, because she knew I couldn't get there before the office closed. My grandkids always looked forward to coming during the summer and spending time at the pool. I'm not sure how I am going to explain to them that I don't have a pool anymore! Laundry is my least favorite thing to do. However, it always helped that there were two nice laundry rooms on the premises. The cost to use the washers and dryers was considerably less than going to a laundromat (I know because I checked). I had very few rent increases while living at Mellmanor. My rent was always less than what any of my friends paid in San Diego and La Mesa. I was very happy at Mellmanor Apartments and highly recommend it as a wonderful place to live. read more

I looked at some vacant apartments with the on-site manager. The one I liked was dirty and smelled like it had been closed up for many weeks. This manager promised that the apartment would be cleaned, carpet shampooed, and aired out before my move-in date. It never was, I found this out when I showed up to move in 3 days later. This manager also told me her maintenance guys had inspected the unit and found no problems... where to start. The furnace did not work (this was last December). Also, it was very cold because the large living room window would not close all the way. In the bathroom, the drains for the shower and sink were totally clogged with hair. And there was candle residue on every surface in the bathroom. The refrigerator barely worked and leaked condensation all over the top shelf. The kitchen sink was also clogged. The fluorescent light fixture in the kitchen did not work, both ballasts were bad. I found out the roof leaked the very first time it rained. I could tell they knew about it because when some pieces of the popcorn ceiling started falling, I could see where the water stains were hidden by some white paint and some spackle. The manager also claimed that they shampoo each apartments' carpet about every 12 months. They never even shampooed the carpet before I moved in, let alone after I had been there for over 12 months. This is definitely one of the worst place I've ever lived. read more

I would like to say Mellmanor Apartments has been very good to my husband and I. Sadly we are leaving but we have been treated with nothing but kindness and care by Josie. My husband and I were first time renters and we were so lucky we had the opportunity to make this place our home. Not only is it always quiet but the landscape is calming and homelike. There's many stores, restaurants, and gas stations around. We never ran into any issues what so ever. The tenants are very quiet and to themselves. We never had any pests in our apartment or outside. Everything was genuinely amazing. The pricing is very affordable especially for such a great area and apartment. I really enjoyed living here. The complex has a family vibe but none of the neighbors are excessively noisy even when they have BBQ's by the swimming pool. Even house residents around the neighborhood are pretty quiet. Josie, the property manager, is also reliable to contact and address any concerns. She may not reply to emails right away but if you drop by her office, she is quick to help you in any way. She is pleasant to talk to and has a casual, yet professional demeanor. The apartment itself is pretty clean, there were no signs of pests and nothing broke down during our stay here. I found the 1-bedroom to be spacious and was the most affordable rent we could find for a 1-bedroom. The laundry facilities are coin operated and can get busy in the weekends but there are two conveniently located in the property by the pool. You have to pay for parking but if you don't mind walking a bit, you can do street parking outside of the property. I didn't have an issue with it. The location is great. It is by the trolley stop, a park, and the Grossmont Center. I would definitely recommend. read more

The management is good for the most part. Nice quite place to live. They have a few problems but for the most part are good about fixing things once you've moved in. When ever we've asked for something we've gotten it within a day or so. If you're looking for low rent, easy transit access and a quite complex, this is the place for you. read more

Amazing! I lived here for 6 months while I was going to school not too far from the apartments and had a great experience! Josie, the manager was great when I needed anything and super welcoming! As a young woman living on her own for the first time I was very nervous to move in anywhere on my own but Mellmanor was definitely the best decision I could have made. The environment is great and I loved my cute, and very spacious apartment. I would definitely recommend this place to anybody looking to move to the La Mesa, or even just San Diego area! read more

Ok. Here goes. Its a toss up with this place..Lets keep in mind that I have been here for about close to 6 months.If you are looking for budget friendly, then this is your go to place!!! I cant ask for anything better than the great location!! Everything is near by and even within walking distance! Grossmont shopping center, Target, Walmart, Movies, The Train Station, The hospital, everything!! Its great. The complex is cute, not so huge, semi ample parking (have to be home by 5 or 6 to make sure you get a parking spot because people have more than one car and dont bother to move 1 of their 5 cars for months!), 2 little pools, 2 little laundry rooms, and a nice little picnic area to relax if you need some fresh air and a "club house" type of area. This place is also pet friendly if you have them. One thing that kind of bummed me out was that not all units have a balcony and if you do end up having one the rent goes up by a certain amount, my previous complex each unit had either a balcony or little patio, sliding doors, and for less!! Updates were constant and you felt as if you were appreciated for renting there. Anyways, I do not recommend this complex if you are sensitive to noise, the walls are very thin and you can hear everything especially the plumbing!! I really enjoy my neighbors to my left showering at midnight almost every night as I am trying to sleep Or my right side neighbors blasting their tv and yet they still have the nerve to ask me if it is too loud!. Im not sure how the centralized ac/heat is set up but you can also hear that when people turn on their units even with the door closed!! The pets are not so much of a bother because who doesn't like to see those bundles of cuteness as you are passing through!! Aside from the noise, You can definitely see that some improvements are trying to be made, but as stated in previous reviews, some things are probably out of their control and don't happen overnight. I'm not sure how long they have been having that approach to their tenants, but to be brutally honest I have not been 100% happy with my stay here. I was told of a few minor changes that would be made in the unit I moved into before I was even moved in and til this day still have not been followed up with. I have not even bothered myself to bring it up a second time or other things I didn't notice before moving in. because I feel as if it should have been taken care of before I moved in. I'm sure they have more important things to take care of tho. But to be honest it feels as if once you are moved in they don't feel the need to accommodate you. My unit is not in the best shape. I think the thing that brought me in was the fact that they had added vinyl flooring and new carpet made the unit seem nice. Other than that, cabinets need to be updated, stove works but not the most flattering when I have to clean up crud that was left from previous tenants and no light in the bedroom -.- .I have a neighbor who moved in shortly after me and the unit has new appliances even a microwave with a balcony and its still a one bedroom and they charge extra for all of that too!! I hardly ever see the maintenance crew around. Nonetheless, I will stop this rant, here. I think people will get the message if they so choose to read this all the way to the bottom. Please note that the complex manager, Josie is great, friendly and shows sympathy. she tries. I just feel as if, whoever this may concern, there could be more effort made to fulfill the "Luxury" part of the complexes name. All in all its an ok place to live. The area it is in proves it. That is all. I hope to update my review at some point but Im not sure how to feel about staying here much longer :( read more

I have lived here for about a year with my boyfriend and we absolutely LOVE IT! We plan on staying for another year. I tried to refer a friend but the apartments are all full which is always a great sign. We live in one of the renovated units and it's gorgeous. The community is kept up really well. Josie is the property manager and she is amazing!!!! She has handled every issue we have had promptly and efficiently. There's laundry onsite and two pools. There's also a nice gas grill that we use often. We have a ton of privacy and the community itself is very low key. One of our favorite parts is the location! I hope we live here until we can get a house! read more

Everything is good, very quiet complex, manager is excellent whenever there is a problem she gets it fixed, the only reason i didn't give it a five star was because the parking is horrible there has been numerous times i had to park on the street and i live way in the back of the complex which i have to walk up the hill to get to the apartment. They need to fix that problem and check for parking permits. read more

I have live here at Mellmanor Apartments for one year now. There are so many reasons why this place is a hidden jewel. I can start with the manager of the apartment complex named Josie. She is sincere and goes out of her way to help you with any issues you may have and very understanding and helpful and takes care of right away. The apartments are big and laid out nice. Very inexpensive for what you are getting. The grounds are kept so nice. Two pools and grill and much more. Water is only 10.00 a month no matter how much you use. Great location too. read more

Moved from the East Coast, and proceeded to make a concientious study of apt housing in LA (Long Beach and some downtown), some Orange, and San Diego counties. I can comfortably say: I did not find a better manager than Josie at Mellmanor, and heartily recommend you consider this place because of her. She was neither gruff nor acted liked she held the bargaining advantage (many in LA were notorious for this). In fact, she was accessible from the get-go and tried to find a unit that met my particular needs. To give you an idea, the first time we meet we spoke for 1-hour+ and Josie found a solution to pretty much everything that came up. During my lease, this too was manifest. Josie could work with you, and actually improved as we moved along in the lease. She also lives on premises, which is a plus if emergencies arise. One recommendation: they need to hire an assistant, especially during the busy season. In the off-season, getting a hold of Josie is no biggie. As for the facilities themselves, ask for a refurbished unit, which look much nicer than the older ones. The hallways are in need of some upkeep, which I believe is being handled. Also ask for a unit facing the hills (south) if you favor a view. It is priceless in the morning, with the sun rising behind them. There were no discernable issues with neighbors; most were nice, and those who weren't did keep away. Just be your usual weird. Also no issues with dog barking, etc. One time there were issues with music, but Josie clamped down on that fairly fast. The location is also very central to La Mesa and the highways to the west. It's really quite hard to find a much better mix of manager/building/location/price in the area. And if you do, I reckon it wouldn't be too much better than Mellmanor's mix. From the beginning of our stay it started out nice but over time our stay has gone down hill a lot. The parking situation sucks here. Some cars don't move for days and others don't even have the correct permit yet no one checks the cars. Pfft some cars park in spots that aren't even parking spots like red zones or walking zones. How the landlord never sees or catches this is my wonder. So you end up almost always parking far away from your complex. The next issue is everyone and their mom smokes cigarettes at this place. They all swarm around near the dumpster likes it's a social club thinking their smoke is harmless yet if you leave your window open all you smell is smoke from outside. This place needs a designated smoking area away from the complex. An then another issue is its almost impossible to enjoy a window open here to get some fresh air in. Between all the smokers and the super strong ethnic foods being Cooked daily by the majority of ethic people living here it almost seems impossible to enjoy an open breeze from your window with out random smells too strong that over whelm your living area. The last and biggest issue is most of the ethic crowd that lives here sleeps on a different time zone for whatever reason. When you want to sleep they are awake playing music loud and even talking outside or hanging out (12,1, 2am at times). It actually happens pretty often and how no one says a word or complains about it blows my mind! It really doesn't help when the walls are so thin either. You can even hear them cooking in the wee early hours with rattling pots and pans as well them bumping their music. I rarely almost never write bad reviews and I tend to think I'm a reasonable patient person but man this place comes off as a facade. We are really ready to move! read more
