What a fantastic place! We live a few hours away with traffic but it is worth the drive! Parking can be a challenge, but there is paid parking across the street. Having spent time in Africa, including Ethiopia, I can tell you the flavors are legit. Staff is super friendly and helpful to those first timers eating without a set of silverware. Don't pass Meleket by if you're in the area. You won't regret it!

Birthday Celebration done right at Meleket.... Call the owner and tell her how many. We had a party of ten.

The Sambusas are a hit and the sauce has a kick but perfect pair.

*Updated Review* I hadn't been here in some years. I'm glad to see they are still around. Stopped in for dinner last night and to catch up with a fellow Yelper. We both share a love for Ethiopian cuisine. On a Monday evening, it was not packed at all so seating was not an issue. He did the vege platter and I did the special beef tibs. Food was delicious! We had to get our honey wine! Service was overall good. My only complaint was that we had to ask for extra injera. The six tiny rolled up pieces were not enough. Either way, I will be back soon!

This restaurant is TERRIBLE. The staff, the owner, they are arrogant, rude, and lack empathy. I attempted to place an order through Yelp's Grubhub option. I attempted to order the 3 meat and Veggie combo & discovered, while trying to order, that this meal didn't give me an option to select my meats(I don't eat beef). So I called the restaurant & attempted to place my order and was informed that they wouldn't substitute beef for fish, so I asked if I could call the restaurant back after discussing what our new order would be. From there, we discussed what we wanted and then I placed my order. through Yelp's Grubhub option for takeout. I ordered a Veggie combo & Fish Dullet & then went to pick it up. When I arrived at the restaurant I selected "My Orders" on Yelp and noticed that I had two separate orders for the same restaurant. Once I investigated, I realized that the initial order that I called in about was ordered without me selecting "check out". To me, this wasn't a big deal. It was a mistake through the app - not me & the restaurant would be courteous enough to refund me while still servicing me my two entrees that I really did order. The lady at the register was super rude & told me that I had to take the order, even though I don't eat beef, even though she remembered me calling and asking if I could replace the beef with fish, and she even remembered telling me that I couldn't. Still, she refused to refund me, instead telling me that I since the second meal(order that I actually checked out and expected to eat)wasn't fully prepared, I could take the food that they had given me & they'd remove the charge for the second meal and keep that. I asked them how that solution made sense considering I don't eat beef which is a large part of that original order(3 meat & veggie platter). She shrugged her shoulders and said: I understand but I already cooked the food so I won't refund you. I asked to speak to a manager & she was worse than the lady I was speaking to. Her condescending demeanor, nasty smirk, and the fact that I could barely finish a sentence without her cutting me off to tell me that I am wrong made this the worst customer service experience I've ever had in my life. I am so upset. Not bc of the money, but the fact that I even showed them step by step what happened on the app and was met with a shoulder shrug and an "oh well." I attempted to call GrubHub and get a refund through them and the rep that I spoke to understood and said she would take care of things. She called the restaurant just to confirm that I had not been served the food & the waitress informed her that she would not oblige for the same reasons she gave me. Bc the food was already prepared. Meanwhile, it had been ten minutes and that food that she couldn't refund me, because it was "already prepared" still wasn't in a container, or a bag, in my possession. GrubHub called me back and informed me that there was nothing they could since the restaurant was unwilling to comply. I've been to this restaurant so many times. My Wife is a Registered Nurse at Holy Cross hospital nearby. Every time I drop her off at work, we stop by this restaurant to order our food. The fact that they value $37 over customer satisfaction and common speaks volumes to me and I will NEVER patron this establishment again. The fact that Yelp doesn't have a zero star option never irked me as much as it does today!

Solid food and great staff. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I went here during one of their live music nights and it definitely set the scene.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Meleket is authentic Ethiopian food and the flavors were definitely reflective of that. I enjoyed my visit here and would definitely visit again.

This is only my second time having Ethiopian food. The first time was a while back so I didn't remember what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. I got the Lamb tibs with rice and spicy lentils. The lamb was good but could use some spice..good thing I got the spicy lentils. You get a lot of food for the price you pay. I would definitely return. read more

We ordered veggies, lamb and beef. Everything was just ok. Nothing was hot, just lukewarm. The veggies were sparse. I think there are better places for Ethiopian food in Silver Spring. read more

And In Conclusion........ Great food, great service. The cucumber appetizer is so good. Had the veggie platter. Was better than most Ethiopian spots and a lot better than some places that we're much more expensive. Will be back! read more

Very nice, family owned restaurant on Georgia Ave near the Beltway. Food is great if you're into Ethiopian fare. I enjoy kitfo. We've eaten in and also ordered carry out many times. Never disappointed. They have a nice bar too. No outdoor seating. read more

Oh. My. Goodness! This was an amazing experience - go, go, go! It doesn't look like anything from the outside and parking is limited but available. Ethiopian food is my fave, and this has quickly made it to the top. We got the vegetarian combo and Zizi's special. It was OUT OF THIS WORLD. Get Zizi's lamb, you will NOT be disappointed. We are going back a second time in this short 3 day DC trip. read more

Our favorite Ethiopian restaurant and bar. We have become regulars and drop in every other week for a beer and delicious samosas. And today we bought dinner for the first time. Dullet, tibs and tripa. Very tasty, we really loved it. Highly recommended. We will be back for sure. read more

I've been eating here since they opened. The veggie combo and any lamb dish are my go-tos. The quality and value are fantastic. I usually order takeout, but have eaten in once. Service was just fine. My picky Aunt recommends this as the "best Ethiopian in Silver Spring." read more

My love & I have been coming here for a little while now. Love the atmosphere, the food, and the service is fantastic. The veggie combo is a good 'go-to' for newbies and vegetarians. The Meleket's Special Tibs: Lamb edition is worth writing home about. 10/10 every time. On Fridays and Saturdays there is live music, and it's open late most days! They also have appetizers, and burgers for less adventurous folx, or the stubborn family member that won't give it a chance !! All in all, this is one of our favorite spots in the dc/ metro area ! read more

I just came across this little gem. Really good Ethiopian food with a lovely upscale atmosphere and friendly and attentive waitstaff. I recommend the Ethiopian cuisine however they also feature other international options. Great flavor and good value. The only downside is the limited parking. read more

We stopped in at 10:00pm - surprised and happy to find an Ethiopian restaurant still serving at such an hour. We were greeted by a great little band playing a Reggae standard, and playing it very well! We wanted take out, but enjoyed the good music and ambience while we waited. The interior of the restaurant looks new and spotlessly clean- I'll have to find out how long it has been open. I certainly hope it stays open however, as our food was delicious! We just had a vegetarian combo and a beef dish, but both were fresh, flavorful and mouthwatering. Being blessed with so many Ethiopian restaurants in the area, naturally everyone has their favorites. I've had about 4 in my couple of decades in DC, but this is my newest one. I hope all fans of this cuisine give it a try; I'm sure the food and atmosphere will make many more switch too. read more

A must for Ethiopian food in Kensington/ Silver Spring. The injera is soft, the veggie combo is delicious, the Ethiopian honey wine is exquisite, and the tea is relaxing. I highly recommend this if you love Ethiopian food!! read more

We ordered takeout a few nights ago and enjoyed it very much! The Veggie Combo was tasty and the Tibs Firfir was divine. The Meleket's Special Tibs was too simple for my tastes, but good if you want a straightforward dish that doesn't have strong spices. Each dish was served with a very generous portion of injera. The atmosphere is very polished and nicely decorated, and the space is small and cozy. The service was friendly. The prices are on point, given the flavors and high quality, so I'm very happy about that. :) Note: Be careful when driving in/out of the parking lot, there are some significant potholes near the entrance onto Seminary and also one in the parking lot. read more

I am thrilled to have found this place! The restaurant itself is nestled into a strip mall on a busy road, but once you are inside, you are transported to a chill, authentic (but modern!) Ethiopian / Eritrean experience. At the front of the restaurant, there is a small stage, where a coffee ceremony is set up. While I am not sure if they actually hold a coffee ceremony every day, all of the necessary items are represented. Behind that, there is a large screen with Ethiopian/Eritrean music videos playing on it. Since the decor and aesthetic seemed a step above many of the restaurants I have been to, I assumed the price point would be higher. I was happily mistaken. My friend and I ordered the veggie combo and the Tibs FirFir to share. The ingredients were fresh and everything tasted delicious. We both left full and had enough food for lunch for the next day. The service was polite but the wait staff did not hover (as is customary). If you need to leave in a hurry, don't be afraid to ask for the check! read more

Just what Silver Spring needs - another Ethiopian restaurant. This one is a little different for us as it is in the 'hood and has plenty of free nearby parking (at least after 6). The decor is slick and bright and every space is spotless. It is one of those restaurants that feel the need to have large screen TVs across the wall. I personally could easily do without the extra sensory entertainment. One showed CNN and another showed African music videos. Additionally, Ethiopian music was piped in, music that didn't match up with the videos playing on the TV screen causing some amusing mismatched song and dance. One suggestion - turn the TVs off at dinner time. I'm getting picky here, but I would also suggest turning off the flashing lights behind the bar. Why did I feel at any moment a stripper was going to come out and do her thing on top of the bar? The food and service were terrific. Our server was welcoming, friendly, and efficient. The tibs were tasty and plentiful. My wife loved her vegetable platter. You are not going to leave this place hungry and unsatisfied. It's funny that Meleket is listed as having both Ethiopian AND Italian cuisine. Is this some vestige of the Italian occupation of Ethiopia during World War II? We did see a listing on the back of the menu for meatballs and pasta. I wonder who the brave individual will be who orders spaghetti and meatballs in a Ethiopian restaurant? On second thought this may be ingenious. You now have something a youngster can order instead of food with a high juvenile ick factor. All in all, a very welcome addition to the neighborhood. read more

By far my favorite Ethiopian restaurant in the area. The owner is so down to earth, well spoken and a chef. We went here with my cousin who was visiting from boston and we all had a great time. Food was perfectly flavored and Anjira was just the right consistency. The ambiance is lovely and it's very clean. To end the meal, we had a lovely fresh ginger tea. The best Ethiopian food we have had in the entire DC-metro area. The lentil, chickpea, and beet dishes in particular are really amazing. The tomatoes they give you on the side of the veggie platter add a kick of freshness and are beautifully seasoned. They're also extremely friendly, and the restaurant is really cute! read more

The food from Meleket is perfection. We tried it for the first time today, and was so complex and flavorful. Portions were generous, and the food was prepared in a healthy way. We loved what we ordered -- the shifinfin, derek lamb tibs, and vegan combo. It gave us so much joy to try all of these dishes which were made so well -- thank you! After our meal, I wanted to learn more about the restaurant. From the Wapo article I found, I learned important fact -- this is Eritrean food. Now I understand some of why, in nuanced ways, this food is different from the Ethiopian food that I have had in the past. We are now dedicated customers to Meleket. I have been here a couple of Saturdays with group of friends. Meleket is one of the family oriented restaurant which has the best, fresh, delicious, spicy, and tasty fish dish in the city of Silver spring, MD. The ambiance reminds me of being home in Ethiopia and dining under the great family treatment. You can't find any Ethiopian Restaurant as clean and Beautiful like this. In particular, Meleket special and Ziz's Tibs are my favorites. Very cheap price for the quality and quantity of the food except Dulet and Sambussa are a little priced. However the test is so amazing. Strongly recommended!!! read more

Some of the best Ethiopian we've had in the area. That's saying a lot since there are a lot of great places. The veggie combo, and misir sambusa and doro alicha were all fantastic. Also got the zilzil tibs which were good too. Perfect amount of injera too. read more

This was my second visit to Meleket. It had received great reviews and my first meal was adequate so I thought I'd try it again. I was grossly disappointed. Not only did it take over 70 minutes for our food to arrive, only one of the two dishes was brought to the table. The food itself was some of the worst that I have had at any Ethiopian restaurant. (I've been to at least half a dozen that are a mile or less away.) I ordered the mixto which came without any vegetable side and the pieces of both the lamb and beef were almost all bone and what there was, was tough. There are too many fine Ethiopian restaurants in Silver Spring for me to ever return to Meleket. read more

The food was absolutely delicious at this restaurant. However do not plan on going in to sit down and eat! The service and the time it takes for your drinks and food to get there is absolutely terrible. That's why I could only give them three stars. It took 30 minutes for us to get our drinks. And it was going on an hour and 40 minutes by the time we got our food. I knew something was up when we walked in and there were four tables ahead of us and everybody just had water or drinks. Just plan on ordering take out. But I must reiterate, the food is absolutely delicious! read more

We have loved Meleket since they opened. But the last meal we ordered was the best yet. I think they've upped their game! We stuck to the vegetarian menu and every single dish was delicious. We esp. like the Kik Alicha (yellow split peas). My 6yo will eat several bowls at a sitting. We also love the Gomen (collard greens), the beets appetizer, and the Atkilt Alicha (cabbage w/carrots). The fries were tasty too and a big hit w my less adventurous 4yo. read more

the vegetarian entrees were good and spicier and more numerous that at other Ethiopian restaurants. On the downside: I have ordered take-out from Meleket at least four times, and every time the food has not been ready until at least 20 minutes after the posted pick up time. Last night when I arrived, there wasn't even anybody there to greet me until I had waited ten minutes. read more

We felt so welcome from the moment we stepped in. We were six people, half vegetarians. We started with the appetizers of spicy kale bread and samosas (all great). The wonderful hostess easily agreed to serve us breakfast ful (fava beans with amazing spices). Then we had dinner including lamb and salmon. Every dish was different, complex and fantastic. The biggest treat was the coffee ceremony at the end. We have eaten in over 30 Ethiopian restaurants and never been offered to share in this experience. This was our second visit to this establishment and we will be back. Thank you so much for making a great evening and adventure for our family! read more

The Awaze Tibs, in particular, lacked the bold, rich, spicy depth that makes the dish so special. It tasted like the seasoning had been toned down, and I found myself wishing for the authentic flavors I know and love. I understand that restaurants sometimes adjust recipes to appeal to a wider audience, but I hope they'll also consider staying true to the vibrant, unforgettable flavors that make Ethiopian cuisine so unique. I truly wanted to love it, but for me, it just didn't taste like home.

It was easily 4 people's worth of food, but more importantly, delicious. The veggie combo had the best shiro and collards I've had in awhile as well as delicious beets, two varieties of lentil (misir wot and another name unknown), cabbage & carrot gomen, fried potatoes, salad and yellow split peas. I am usually not as keen on yellow split peas but we thought these were better than average. The doro wot was excellent and for the first time ever, came with two drumsticks. I seriously have never gotten more than one drumstick anywhere else. It was easily twice the size of other doro wot portions. It had a decent amount of heat but probably not as much as our other favorite places. It was by no means bland though, it was excellent, just not as spicy as others (still very spicy by Marylander standards, be warned). The veggies though are mostly milder while also being well seasoned. You get a choice of injera; local injera is a blend that is not gluten free and is included in the price. You can get the 100% teff for an upcharge of 3.50. We aren't celiac so went with the local and it was still good for our tastes. We stuffed ourselves and still had probably 2/3 of the food left so will be enjoying it for a couple more days. The meal came in under $50 and seemed a bargain comparatively when balancing quality and quantity. We will definitely return! Oh, I should add: Service is very friendly, but this is not a super fast place so plan accordingly. It is very clean and attractive, bathrooms clean too. They have a couple small metal tables out front if you want to enjoy the weather, but it might be a little loud as it's right on the street.

For those of us familiar with traditional ethnic Chinese food, a menu written in Chinese is a good sign. They have traditional Taiwanese and Chinese food like scallion pancakes, sesame balls, beef noodle soup, soup dumplings, etc... Very good variety and there appears to be something for everyone, possibly with the exception of vegan dishes.. - Quality. Pretty good. Their scallion pancake was soft, not too oily, and not too salty. I prefer the scallion pancake to have been a bit more thick and flaky, but that's my personal preference. To be fair, still delicious. Their chive and pork dumplings definitely had a delicious chive flavor. Substantial and the wrapper was not too thick. Their spicy sesame paste tofu had a good flavor and substantive. The chili oil wontons were not too spicy and had a good flavor. Again, my personal preference would have been for the dumplings to have been more substantive, but still pretty decent. - Service. Pretty good. It appears most, if not all their staffers, speak Chinese (Mandarin), which was also helpful, because I specifically ordered in Chinese. I asked them about the spice level, because I wanted to ensure it would not be too spicy for my friend. - Price. Pretty good value for menu and portions. - Location. It's pretty easy to find. Also within convenient walking distance to the Silver Spring metro. The inside space is pretty good. Tables can seat a minimum of 2, all the way up to 8. What's Not - Quality. The sesame balls are smaller than I expected. They're the rough approximation of a ping pong ball, maybe smaller. I was disappointed, because I like sesame balls that are substantial. - Service. I specifically asked for soup spoons, because we were eating dumplings. Instead, they gave me regular spoons. Not all the dishes come out in the order you hope. For example, main dishes may come out before the appetizers. This is going to be dependent on your personal preference. - Parking. There is parking near the restaurant, but it's going to be dependent on the day and time. Final Answer Worth coming back.

I regret to say that my recent visit to Meleket Restaurant, an Ethiopian establishment, was far from satisfactory, and the level of service provided left much to be desired. The primary issue revolved around the agonizingly long wait times for our food. Despite repeated assurances from the waitstaff, our order took an astonishing two hours to arrive. The atmosphere in the restaurant was tense, with every patron expressing frustration at the extended delays. To compound matters, when the food finally did arrive, it was disappointingly cold. We had ordered a mixed platter featuring doro tibs, lamb tibs, and another lamb dish. While the flavors were okay, the lack of warmth significantly impacted the overall dining experience. The frustration stemming from the lengthy wait only intensified upon realizing that the food wasn't worth the extended delay. Service is a critical aspect of any dining experience, and unfortunately, Meleket Restaurant failed to meet even the most basic expectations. The waiters' continuous false promises about the imminent arrival of our food only added to the disappointment. It pains me to provide a low review, as I prefer to focus on the positive aspects of establishments. However, Meleket Restaurant's exceptionally poor service and the lackluster quality of the food upon arrival make it a regrettable exception. So delighted to have this new neighborhood restaurant and hangout! I'm probably a little biased since I've know Abe and his family for a number of years, but I can honestly say that this is some of the best Ethiopian food I've tasted, hands down. This is probably because it's cooked with care and love by Abe and his sisters, whose intention it is to make your dining experience as close to being in their home as possible. Not only does Abe want to bring you a taste of real Ethiopian food, he also wants to support and improve the neighborhood, by making Meleket a place to relax, socialize, listen to local music, and enjoy tasty eats. Menu items not to miss: the Bayu Bites appetizer and the breakfast Fuel (pronounced "fool" I believe). And their Doro Wat is just amazing! read more

disapointed , I like to come when the owner is present, I cam yesterday the lady charge me for tomato salad on top I never had anything like that in 20 years I go to Ethiopian Restaurant. She told me that she has to charge because when the restaurant is empty like it was when I came , she can close the business, I think it was not a very good explanation, and why do I have to pay for others ............. the bill should have be $15/16 it was $ 28.00............. except this bad day, I need to say the food is excellent, the restaurant very clean Bath very clean and some days the staff very nice is depend who is working there read more

The veggie combo and meleket special tibs are my two favorites. The whole menu is absolutely delicious with many different options both for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The service is very warm and welcoming. The cleanliness of this place and the service is undeniably amazing. Oh, don't forget to try their "breakfast delight" yes it is exactly as amazing as it sounds. The combo consists of chechebsa, silsi firfir, kinche, and eggs. It is out of this world amazing. I'm so glad this restaurant popped up in our neighborhood. The food is great, some of the best and most authentic Ethiopian food I've ever had. We've visited for dinner and for brunch. It is such a treat to be able to get fuel, just as it is served in north Africa! What's more, the owners are part of our community and absolutely dedicated to having their restaurant as a community hub, with live music on the weekends and a quiet, peaceful place to spend time during the day. My kids and I - 15 and 12 - absolutely love this restaurant!! The food is incredibly fresh, incredibly delicious. The veggie platter is the best I've ever had. My brother, a vegan, has enjoyed Ethiopian food from MD to CO and back; he says that Meleket has some of the best Ethiopian food he's ever eaten! The owners, Abe and his lovely wife Faven, are very welcoming and clearly put a lot of heart and soul into the food they prepare. The decor and ambiance are calming and elegant. Their menu had many options for vegetarians and meat eaters, and the crowd I ate with all said their entrees were delicious. Hands down one of, if not THE BEST Ethiopian restaurant I've tried. The food is very fresh and flavorful, the ambiance is nice, wait isn't too long, and everything just tastes great. And to the reviewer below that complained the sambusa is "overpriced" as it's $6, that's pretty standard and it comes with 3. It's the best sambusa I've tasted. One of the prettiest Ethiopean restaurants in the area. We were warmly greeted by owner Abraham (Abe) who recommended wonderful choices from their menu. We ordered the vegetarian platter with the addition of Doro Wat & were very pleasantly surprised as they added 2 more meat dishes to the order ! lamb Tibbs & Beef Kay wat ! If you guys want to eat a great Ethiopian food, than this is the right place to be at! The food is so delicious and the service is awsome! Not to forget, the people that works there are so friendly and nice people. I will definitely go back to this place. My family and I enjoyed their food very well. We had a great meal at Meleket restaurant. The vegetarian platter is absolutely delicious, with some of the best beets I have ever had. The staff is very pleasant and helpful, and the owner, Abe, is friendly and welcoming. It is clean and there is plenty of parking in the lot across the street. There are yummy cocktail offerings as well as the excellent food. read more

Truly tasty dishes. Try Zizi's tibs served sizzling hot. Sauces and spices were flavorful. Good Ethiopian music in the background. Decor, bar lighting, warmth, and general atmosphere all contributed to the 5-star rating. Few Ethiopian restaurants come close. Good luck to the owner(s). The elegant design of the place gives you a high end vibe from the moment you walk in. The very warm and welcoming staff almost convince you that you are in fact dinning in a high end restaurant. We tried their veggie combo, Meleket special and the Kitfo. The veggie combo is my fav. Loved the "Alcha Kik" on it. Definitely going back. read more

This place is decorated so beautifully with elegant ceiling and flooring. Their food was fresh and delicious the best Ethiopian dish I have had in the silver spring area. I loved their sambusa and their kitfo the most. I can't wait to go back, the service was great. read more

This is by far the place to be for anyone looking for authentic ethiopian food. The customer service is great, their food was really good and most of all we didn't want to leave because of their cozy atmosphere. Will definitely be back. read more

Great food, especially lamb, which is tender and cooked perfectly. Injera nice and sour. Friendly staff. Small restaurant means long waits for food, but worthwhile. Takes reservations, which might be a good idea on weekends. read more
