We've been here once for takeout sushi. The sushi was delicious and fresh and we enjoyed every bite of it. It was expensive (for us). For three adults, without drinks, our order came to plus $80.00, although these days that's becoming normal! The restaurant itself is tiny with very limited and crowded, and not very comfortable, seating, and garish overhead lighting. A quiet dinner is not to be had here! Came here for lunch with a friend and it was great! It wasn't too busy on a Saturday afternoon, and it was nice to be inside on a hot day. We had a baby with us and the server was very friendly and kind and fun. I got the special Joe roll which was DELISH & fancier than I expected. The fried onions were so good and a plenty! I ordered to go from this place since it's a rainy day and im pet sitting so I wanted something to eat for dinner while cozied up on the couch. This place was the closest to where I was pet sitting at and good ratings so I placed an order for a scheduled time. More and more places are charging for sauce on the side now and unfortunately I think it's because so many people order more than necessary and are just doing too much so I put on the notes to keep the wasabi and ginger and please put some extra ponzu and they did, not sure if they charge for sauce but if they do im glad they were willing to make that acception. Everything was alright no issues but once I got home and opened my bag I was wowed and so impressed as I had never seen a place do this before and I am often annoyed when places put multiple different rolls in one box because you never know if they are for different people but I know it's to reduce waste and save money and it's usually not that big a deal (especially since any entire order was for me) but they labeled each side of the box and left an arrow pointing to the sauce that goes with it! read more

This place never lets us down!! Always super fresh and beautifully presented fish, with great customer service! They have been uping their game lately as well! Really nice menu covers (although they should maybe use nicer paper to match the quality of everything else?), and serving the sake in an ice bath! (Needed a cloth napkin too) but it was still nice! Even all of the conversations going on around us touched in how fresh and delicious everything is. We come here almost once a month for our sushi fix! Been coming here for years which is why they get a 3 instead of a 1 or 2. Food is good, prices are ok, my issue is the serving sizes. Look at the picture of the flying dragon roll vs the Alaska roll. The flying dragon is completely covered on top whereas the Alaska roll is a California roll with a thin strip of salmon. This is not the first time this has happened but this is the first time I've tried addressing it with the owner and he just said it's supposed to be that way. The menu picture from their website says otherwise. I can recommend this place but I can't recommend that specific roll. read more

Megu Sushi is the best sushi I've had in the last 10 year in and around Los Angeles. Everything is thoughtfully and delicately prepared. Chef Willy has some amazing sushi specials and rolls. I usually go for the 911 roll and the oaks roll. His 911 roll is the best I've ever had. He sushi cuts are nice and thin and everything melts in your mouth. We've been hesitant to try this restaurant because their health score on Yelp was all over the place, but it looks like they have improved and we gave it a shot. Service was really great. Our server was attentive and modifications were not an issue; everything came out perfect. The spicy tuna crispy rice was our favorite. The garlic lemon roll has a strong kick of garlic which over powers a bit, but delicious and lives up to the name. Yuzu roll and yellowtail jalapeño roll were also good. They substituted the imitation crab for us with real crab for a small up charge on the albacore delight and it gave the roll an unusual texture, but that's on us. The place does look like it needs a good cleaning, if not a total makeover, so we might not be returning - given the history on sanitation issues. But, thanks to our server, we had a really good experience this time. read more

Hidden from the Cochran Street in a large, nondescript strip mall, Megu Sushi is an unassuming, somewhat austere, unpretentious eatery. They have permanent Happy Hour menu that serves reduced prices on selected hand & cut rolls. There are Japanese beers, Sake (sah keh) as well as Soju/Korean vodka. Waitresses are polite, but have a sedated, mechanical, somewhat "stepford wife" feel. Environment is quiet with no music which is just fine with me since many restaurants in the Los Angeles area feature loud humping bass music with screeching clientele to match which makes for unpleasant dining. Bestia, Bottega Louis, Animal, Son of a Gun, you know who you are. 1) Seared Tuna Green Salad is mild meaty textured Tuna cooked at the edges placed over green leaf lettuce with a creamy mild ginger dressing. Pleasant way to start the meal. 2) Mexican Roll is a misnomer. There's nothing Mexican about it except that chiles may have their origin in Mexico. Basically, it is made from Surimi/imitation crab meat infused with mayonnaise, Southeast Asian style Sriracha/garlic, chile sauce & Sushi rice sprinkled with Japanese rice vinegar. I ordered the hand roll & got it wrapped in Nori/Japanese seaweed paper in the shape of a cone. Not really spicy hot & the julienned cucumber was a nice juicy refreshing flavour contrast. Rather conventional non-traditional Japanese Sushi made in California. 3) Spicy Salmon Cut Roll is fatty farm raised salmon dressed with a bit of mayonnaise/sriracha, stick of cucumber with Nori on the inside & Sushi rice on the outside. Simple yet the fattiness of the salmon infused an unctuous richness. 4) Jerry Roll was another non-traditional Sushi cut roll that was baroque in detail. Fried Tempura batter shrimp & Surimi surrounded by Nori surrounded by Sushi rice. Then slices of tuna & avocado cover the top of this roll with a heavy drizzling of Sriracha based mayonnaise with a generous pour of hot chile oil which has a piquant, smoky, oily flavour. The flavours are good, but the calorie content using such high fat sauces may not make this a favorite of the American Heart Association. The Sushi rice in my rolls were a bit hard & dry, but acceptable. However, I ate the rice from a Nigiri Unagi/eel Sushi and found it to be stone cold, hard yet mushy, overly sticky, and formed under strong pressure so that it felt like a heavy brick. The head chef should go to a traditional Japanese Sushi restaurant like Mako Sushi in DTLA or Imai Sushi in Gardena to see & taste exemplary Sushi rice. However, the prices at Megu Sushi is moderate especially for their HH menu. 3 Yelp stars for good enough Sushi at lower prices. read more

Love this place! The fish is always so fresh. The staff are so welcoming and make us feel like we are invited in for a family dinner.

It's been a while between visits here, and a few things have changed including the faces behind the bar. Usually this spells trouble, but I'm here to say the change was actually quite interesting this time. I had yet another first at Megu today, I tried their Gomez Roll. No, its not named for Gomez Addams, its named for the new sushi chef, Gomez. Its an interesting fusion of Japanese and Latin tastes, and I really enjoyed it, as my latest photos will attest. There are new items on the menu, so make certain you look at them all. Don't be afraid to ask questions either, the staff are all cool folks and easy to get along with. The service was still great, as was my sushi, besides the massive Gomez Roll, I had a little salmon too (life just ain't worth a damn without salmon). I did note the place was busier than in the past, and this made me very happy; I'd hate to loose yet another great eatery here in Simi. Megu is alive and well and worth a visit! read more

Ordered the Miso Ramen with spicy tuna, crab, and yellowtail hand rolls and what I can summarize my experience into is "there was an attempt." The presentation is below average and some of the ingredients had an aged look. Despite half the food having an unappealing look we pushed through and finished what we could. The ramen is $13?! Like my goodness they must have really thought this out to price it at $13 but nope! The miso broth tastes like watered down free miso you get at many Japanese sit downs and the portion of noodles was laughable. The "chashu" was the equivalent to a skinny side portion of bbq pork rib at a cheap Hawaiian joint and the flavor justifies the example. The egg was hard boiled too. So $13 bowl of ramen here gets you 50 cent top ramen flavor compared to a $13 "hits the spot" bowl in little Tokyo. I've never felt so robbed before. The hand rolls were bland. Especially the spicy tuna and the crab. The yellowtail just tasted like mayo and the overall texture was mushy with super chewy seaweed wraps. I have a feeling that the owners haven't had decent sushi or ramen in a long while so I can imagine the possibility that this quality of food might make someone think it's passable. But for me, if you cut the price in half and served it to me fresh, I still wouldn't recommend coming here. 2 stars because I've seen worse in the east coast. read more
