So, I'll begin this review by saying that I hate buses, and I would probably not ever give any sort of bus ride more than 3 or 4 stars (except the awesome Onondaga Couch drivers who let my team booze up a storm on board, but that's a different story...)
This was my 4th round trip on a bus to NYC. The three previous times I'd taken the infamous Fung Wah, but decided to scope out the competition since I was able to get a $30 round trip on MegaBus (BoltBus was out of prices that low, and if I can get a ticket for $30, I'm certainly not spending more unless it involves a different form of transportation). I took a 12:30 bus down on Friday. The ride was pretty pleasant, the bus was not full, and wireless internet worked for the whole ride. The bus was clean and relatively comfortable, but the driver seemed to lack the ability to properly control the heat/ac as it was constantly fluctuating between really cold and stuffy hot. The MegaBus takes a route I've not been on before to NY, continuing on I-84 to 684 to 287 to the Major Deegan. I'm not sure if this is faster, but 95 pretty much always sucks so it's possible. However, once you get into NY, instead of continuing through Queens and Brooklyn as the Fung Wah does, we exited the Major Deegan at 155th Street and then proceeded down Amsterdam to West End Ave before circling MSG to get to 31st and 8th, the dropoff point. This is definitely a more convenient drop off than Chinatown, but inching down the West Side for 124 blocks of traffic lights was slightly excruciating. I almost wish that I'd known someone on the corresponding Fung Wah ride to see which bus got in faster. Either way we did still make decent time, only getting in about 20 minutes late. This was in part due to the maniacal driving tendencies of our operator. Chinatown buses get a bad rap, but really this is not unique to them. I've had a Greyhound bus bang a uey in the middle of I-87 because he missed an exit, and this MegaBus driver was no exception: cutting people off, inching through red lights, driving in the wrong lane, etc.
The ride back was less pleasant. I arrived about half an hour early for my 6:30 bus back to Boston. It was complete chaos. There seem to be at least 2 other bus lines with pick up/drop off at this same location (31st and 8th). No one anywhere looks like a bus employee, so you have to wander around asking people in line until you find yours. And then you can have the joy of standing next to a urine-soaked MSG. Our bus arrived and it was one of the red DATTCO ones. Internet did not work, and I suspect this has to do with it being a DATTCO bus; maybe they don't have wireless hooked up? The bus was packed to the gills, but I did get a seat. Again, we spent probably an hour inching our way up the West Side till 155th Street. Why? This can't be the most efficient way. Once on the highway I could see we had another maniac on our hands, and we really flew to Boston, passing everything in sight and running over the rumble strips a few times. And my favorite surprise of hte ride was that the bathroom had no light. Yep, that's right, pitch black bus bathroom!
Bottom line: if you can get a really cheap ticket, I'd say this is a worthy alternative, but at the $30 price point, I like the idea of moseying on into South Station or Chinatown and climbing on the next bus to show up....it definitely smells better there at least! read more
