I design costumes and props for a festival near Boston every year. I travel with a giant suitcase from New York, and return with a slightly less giant suitcase once it's over.
Every year I have a large bag, as props and costumes require it. And every year, mega bus begrudgingly let's me pay an extra fee to travel with my heavy bag. The fee is never more than $25, and it's for the extra weight.
Similarly, every year my bag home is smaller and lighter than my bag coming to Boston. This year it's a whole 4" around smaller!!! And I can ALWAYS carry and lift my bag myself while wearing heels.
I arrived at the megabus gate at south station at 620 to get on the 630 bus. The man taking tickets spent the next ten minutes telling me that my memory of reality was wrong, that mega bus does not allow charging an extra fee for overweight luggage. He told me I could get on the bus but my bag couldn't and pulled up the megabus policy about bag size (which did not say anything about overage fees, either for or against them.)
He showed me the policy saying the weight max was 50 pounds and told me he "knew what 50 pounds felt like" and would tell me when I got there if I started emptying my bag out. I told him I was happy to empty my bag but to please tell me exactly what it weighed so I could empty a proper amount out. He continued to repeat that he knew what 50 pounds felt like, so, with three other bags still on my shoulder, I lifted the bag and walked back as forth with it. Keep in mind this man was at least 5'11" and made of muscles torso wise. I told him that I am 5'3" and in heels and I could lift and carry it, so it couldn't possibly weigh much more than 50 pounds.
Suddenly at 630, this policy changed and he told me I could pay $20 for the overweight fee as long as I load it on the bus myslef. I said GREAT! Let's do it! He asked cash or credit. I handed him my card and he said that if I want to pay credit, I would have to go all the way to the other end of the bus terminal and by the time I did, the bus would be gone.
Honestly, I don't know how I talked him in circles at this point, but it ended with me shoving the last $14 cash that was in my wallet in to his hand and watching as he put my bag on the bus.
I've accepted megabus as a necessary evil for sometime now, but if they are running their business like a bunch of thugs, it hurts me on a cellular level to know anyone is supporting them, but more importantly, it concerns me that there will be more issues for others without my gift of gab in the future. This interaction could have gone a billion other ways, and could have happened while festival bound, causing problems for my staff or performers.
I have contacted the producer of the festival discouraging them from using megabus in the future, and I strongly advise against it for anyone who doesn't want to support baggage bullying. read more
