For $17.00, you and 40 other people whose lives went horribly wrong so that they could not muster the skills necessary to find a rideshare on craigslist, or put up the $100 extortion Amtrak charges, can embark upon a journey of adventure that will challenge the way you view advertisements for free wifi, plenty of legroom, and the way you view the current state of our society. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll play awkward footsies with the person across from your seat. You'll become intimately familiar with the type of deodorant your neighbor uses. You'll hear loud women who should really use up two seats, huff and puff and squeeze into one. At the end of it all you'll be spilled onto the grimy streets of manhattan's midtown, like a bad chinese dinner. read more

So here's the thing: Megabus departs Boston for destinations other than New York City. While I've never made the Boston to NYC trek, I've gone from Boston to Burlington, VT several times, and all have been very smooth and relatively inexpensive experiences. We typically depart on time or a few minutes after and typically arrive right on time, if not 15-30 minutes early. It appears that there's now a stop on Montpelier, though given Montpelier's "blip on the map status", this doesn't really worry me. Cheers to South Station for giving Megabus a legit berth in the bus terminal. It's a far cry from most Megabus stops I've been to, where you're forced to wait on a curb in the middle of nowhere. Megabus pro-tips: --Book tickets as early as you can. Add yourself to their mailing list to get notified of when tickets first go on sale (and check your spam box if you don't see the notices, since their messages often wind up there). Contrary to the rumblings of some Yelpers on here, MB does still offer $1 tickets if you snag them early. Perhaps not to NYC or Philly, but to smaller points like Burlington, they're definitely out there. Especially on weekdays. --If you have an appointment you're trying to make at your destination, try to arrive no later than 8-10 hours before. I'm serious. You never know what traffic will have in store for you, especially if you're doing the Boston-NYC run. I've done Albany-NYC and we were late by a few hours. --Don't count on WiFi or outlets working. And before you complain, keep in mind that Amtrak, at at least twice the price, isn't too consistent about these amenities, either. --If you want a good seat on the bus, get to the stop early and don't bring a bag to check, if possible. You can get first dibs on a seat while others are checking their bags. read more

Very bad customer service. I left my laptop on my seat to get my luggage and when I remembered the door of the bus was closed. I knocked on the door and the driver saw me but refused to open the door and drove away. This could have been resolved in 2 second If the driver had the common decency to acknowledge my concerns. Terrible customer service afterwards, I will never ride megabus again. read more

I took a red-eye bus ride back from Boston to New York at midnight a week ago. The ride started off great, I mean, the bus was huge, dark, and quiet. There's an upper deck and a lower deck to the bus. The lower deck has actual tables where you can hook up your laptop to outlets and make use of the free wi-fi. That's a huge plus. However, the bus driver was such a maniac. I'm not sure if this is typical of Mega Bus drivers, but this lady took the dumbest route back to New York, drove like an insane person, kept nearly falling asleep, and kept talking to herself. She was frightening. The bus kept swerving onto the shoulder and she kept having to slam her breaks because she was going too fast into curves. Everyone on the bus was terrified and some were even convinced that this was their last night on Earth. I find it ironic that I've been warned so much about the Fung Wah bus safety and my Fung Wah bus ride was safe as can be and the Mega Bus was actually the terrifying ride. To top everything off, when we get to New York, instead of taking the Henry Hudson Pkwy down to 28th street so we could end this nightmare, she ends up taking the Major Deegan to Yankee Stadium and then entering Manhattan and taking us through the many traffic lights of Harlem and the Upper West Side before finally taking us to the drop off location at 28th and 7th. She added an unnecessary extra half hour to an already terrible and long trip. Free wi fi and spaciousness don't make up for insane drivers who threaten our lives and then take us on stupid routes home. The fact that Mega Bus was willing to hire such an inept and crazy person is really an indication on what kind of company they are. Therefore, I will never buy another ticket from them again. There are too many other options and no savings is worth threatening an entire bus load of people. I recommend Fung Wah over Mega Bus any day. Still have to try Bolt Bus, though. read more

I've taken the MB a couple of times from DC to NYC. Of course, it's very cheap, so there's that. However, I've had some real problems. 1) No A/C. 2) Broken down buses. 3) No compensation when there's something wrong. 4) Drivers who don't know where they're going. 5) Drivers who don't pick up where they say they will. 6) Drivers who can't tell passengers where their "explorations" are/leave them in a foreign city to fend for themselves. Fortunately, I've become city-savvy enough as an adult to conquer most of these issues. I've usually used the bus as a mode of transport from A to B and I always have a contingency plan for how to get home/get around. I know people in most cities, so if I got lost, or needed help, I'd know how to get where I need to be. I'm not too worried about being a victim of crime, because I can be kind of mean. BUT...if I were not city-smart (and I'm not perfect, surely...and I have been concerned on these trips), I can see this being a nightmare for someone. For example, if you were trusting the driver to get you somewhere for something ON TIME. No way. If you think (s)he's going to care about your good time while you're in the city, or care if you get to your destination...think again. If you think this is a good way to make sure that you get to the Broadway show by 7 PM...it's not. When our bus broke down, the woman behind us actually had the NERVE, while we're all sweating on the side of the road, to say, "Well...the people with Broadway tickets should get on the rescue bus first, because we have somewhere to be." As though the rest of us just have nothing to do with our lives, but sweat our proverbial...uh...acorns off, on the side of the road. How elitist for someone riding a Megabus. :D Anyway, you're riding a bus...with other people who've paid rock-bottom prices to ride a bus. And that's the experience. And, if you're cool with that, then this is a cheap way to get from one place to the next. But, it's not a way to get Aunt Gertrude to a Broadway show in style. And, like a rollercoaster, it's not recommended for the delicate, or those with a heart condition. read more

I had a last minute audition in NYC one day and made all the arrangements the night before, which is never advised, but shouldn't be an issue. Got the confirmation e-mail, thought I was all set. Had a friend drive me to South Station at 5am to catch the bus. When I arrived at the terminal with the confirmation print out in hand, I tried to check in with the driver. I was informed that my name and confirmation numbers were not on any of his lists, even though I had all of that confirmed right in front of me in my hand. After pleading with him for several minutes and even having another stranger plead with him on my behalf after overhearing, I was told there was nothing he could do for me and to contact someone at the bus terminal. ...it was 5 am. They didn't open for another 4 hours. When I finally placed a phone call to a Megabus rep to figure out what happened and get a refund, she couldn't figure out where it all went wrong, and offered me a complimentary ticket for whenever I wanted saying all I had to do was to call Megabus and give them my name, which would be in the system for a complimentary ticket anytime to anywhere. (Though I had argued with her I simply wanted the money put back on my debit card in the first place) Fast forward to my next audition in NYC. I call up Megabus WEEKS in advance to claim my complimentary ticket from the first time they royally screwed me over. They said it didn't exist and they'd never heard of that happening before. ...thanks for screwing me out of nearly $100 bucks Megabus. You won't get another dime from me! read more

This is the worst bus ever. It is filthy, wifi doesn't work and we reached 1 hour late from Boston to NY. Do not recommend it read more

I wish I read reviews about Megabus before I booked my trip with them. They deserve NO STARS. NOT only did they rob us of our money, we then had to take our OWN car to go to Boston to NYC. AFTER already driving to Boston which is about an hour away from us. You would think that the driver would do a head count before leaving the station? NOPE. The bus was supposed to leave at 2:15 am and we had just found our way (running) to the gate at 2:14am and the bus was pulling away. We had arrived into Boston at 1:50am looking for parking since we're not from the area and it took us a bit since our GPS wasn't cooperating with us. We talked to an agent in South Station, but she was of no use to us. She said something along the lines of she doesn't work for megabus.... Obviously that got us angry. We went on the website, called the number but they didn't open til 6am. Neither did their ticket office. After driving, paying tolls and making it into New York, we decided to call Megabus to cancel our trip back to AT LEAST get our money back since we weren't coming back on the bus... We spoke with a bunch of people and NO ONE could get us a MANAGER to speak with. They have horrible customer service skills and don't know how to accommodate to their customers. We bought the tickets THE DAY BEFORE leaving and they couldn't refund us our money? They also said we should have been there 15 mins prior... Well, if the bus wanted to leave at 2am it could have right? Since we're REQUIRED to be there 15 mins prior. I would understand if the bus left early because he/she took a head count and everyone was there.... THIS WAS NOT THE CASE. OBVIOUSLY Megabus does not care about their CUSTOMERS. This bus line should be AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS. This was our FIRST and LAST time EVER purchasing a ticket through these THIEVES. read more

Let me start by saying that I've ridden Megabus numerous times and never have I had a worst experience while traveling. I took an afternoon bus from Boston to NYC when the bus broke down about an hour outside of Boston. We waited an hour for a repairman to come, and he was unable to fix it. Megabus' solution was to stop the oncoming hourly buses and fit maybe 10 people at a time in whatever free seats were left until we were all picked up. With 75 passengers, there was no way that we would all get to NYC. After 4 hours of waiting on the interstate, a DOT servicemen and a State trooper got involved to try to get us off the side of the road and at least to a rest stop to eat or something. So, they called a bus service who took us to a McDonalds in Sturbridge without our megabus driver. We all waited there for another 2 hours. All passengers started calling customer service to figure out what was going on and why we were stranded with no prospect of getting to our destination. They could give us no clear answer as how they were going to fix the situation. It was as if Megabus had no protocols in place to deal with a bus breaking down. After 7 hours of waiting, and being displaced they finally sent a replacement bus and we made our way to NYC. It took a total 11 hours to get from Boston to NYC. It should have taken 4. By the end they refunded the trip... all of $30, but that in no way restored my confidence in this company. I have never experienced such a complete break down in communication or seen a service take relatively no accountability for their actions. I get it, buses breakdown... we can't help that, but it's in how you handle it. I will NEVER ride Megabus again after this horrific experience. I will tell everyone I know to AVOID this service. read more

There is so much I can say about the Megabus. I have twice been solicited to give cash to a Megabus driver. The first time was to pay off a corrupt state trooper in Illinois. The second time was to pay for gas after their TWO COMPANY CREDIT CARDS WERE DECLINED. I have seen the second half of Poltergeist 3 on the Megabus. Soon after being solicited for cash and watching the second half of Poltergeist 3, I have been fearful of impending mob violence by the bus passengers. I have twice arrived more than an hour late and once arrived more than two hours late. I have watched an obviously pirated copy of Ratatouille on the Megabus while it was still playing in the theater. Megabus is the most poorly run company of any kind that I have ever given money to. I will never pay another dollar to megabus, and I encourage you to do the same. Before taking the Megabus, you should ask yourself the following questions: (1) Do I need to get there at the time on the schedule, or do I have tons of time to waste?; (2) Does incompetence bordering on negligence annoy me, or do I like it when people suck at their jobs?; (3) Do I enjoy being enraged?; (4) If not, do I possess mood-altering drugs that can be discreetly used in public? read more

I have taken Megabus a couple of times as a way to get down to New York City from Boston on my own. My experiences were ok. The first time I took Megabus, I showed up at South Station and they cancelled because there was a snowstorm coming last year. Apparently, Megabus sent out an e-mail to all passengers on that day's bus at 1:05 am that morning. Who would think that someone would send them an e-mail at 1 something in the morning? Luckily I got a refund and a ticket for a couple days later. The experience was fine that time both ways. However, I did not like it as much when I took it this past summer to visit my friend in NYC. On the way, the bus showed up at South Station 30 minutes late. I was getting worried they would cancel. There service is too slow. Also, the drivers are not the best. I even read a NY Times article about how drivers for big express bus companies like Megabus and Greyhound are sleep deprived as they drive so many hours back and forth in one day. However, it is still way safer than Fung Wah or any of those Chinese buses. The people who ride Megabus are generally normal young people, college students, or foreign tourists. I never took a bus like Fung Wah and never will. It seems like a suicide mission from what I've heard. Overall, Megabus is fine, but not great. The drivers may be sleep deprived and may not always be the best but they are safe and legit as you can only order tickets online. Also, as a young high school student I like the fact that Megabus lets its passengers off on the street rather than in Port Authority. It is nice not having to worry about hustlers or getting robbed. Megabus is cheap and gets you where you need to be. It is good for young people or anyone who is traveling on a budget. Warning, do not sit by the bathroom, it has a vile pungent smell when the door opens as a person comes in or out. This is just my opinion as I am not a huge fan of bus travel, but am willing to do it in order to visit my hometown and have a good time. If I were to take a bus to NYC again I would probably take the luxury bus Dartmouth Coach, which I hear is awesome. read more

After the equivalent of more than eight 24-hour days spent in transit between Boston and New York City over the past two years, I would like to submit myself to the court as an expert witness. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I present to you the following evidence in the case of Julie A. vs. Megabus: For the prosecution: - Megabus rarely leaves on time, and always arrives late. Whether it's for a valid reason (trying to accommodate someone with mobility issues) or less valid ones (no bus, giant disorganized mob, random rest stop so driver can smoke a cig), they may as well throw their schedule out the window. - They oversell their buses. This never happened at first, but for my past two trips, I have not gotten on the "first" bus for my scheduled, ticketed departure time. In both cases, the "second" bus didn't arrive until the next scheduled time. Which then displaces the rightfully-ticketed folks on the next bus. - When traveling to Boston, scheduling matters. The T stops at 12:30. If your bus is late, your far-more-than-$1 ticket becomes a far-more-than-$1 ticket plus a very expensive cab ride. - The NYC loading process is disgustingly inefficient. Hundreds of people going to who-knows-where stand around, outside, in bewildered "lines" until some guy hollers "BOSTON! 6:50!" and causes a mass exodus last seen in Deep Impact. - The buses themselves. Internet is the least reliable of all WiFi-equipped buses, there is zero legroom, and lordy, that back row is hell on wheels. Whenever the bus is stopped, they turn off the heat or air conditioning. - Customer Service doesn't care. They're providing a cheap service and that comes with shoddy or non-existent customer relations. Want to complain? Prepare to spend an hour on the phone being reminded that "your call is important." - That rotund Fisher-Price looking mascot guy with the creepy grin. For the defense: - The guy who loads the Megabus at South Station is nice. - There are a lot of available times and it's cheap. - It's typically non-stop (except when the driver has a nicotine craving). - It will get you from point A to point B. In conclusion: There are better, more comfortable and more reliable low-cost options to get you where you need to go. If you're stuck, it's there. Verdict: Guilty. read more

Literally the worst travel experience of my life (and I used to fly 2x per week, every week, for 2.5 years...). I will never, ever again utilize them and seriously recommend avoiding them as well. -Bus Operator #1 was driving a bus on his first day at work and acknowledged that he "didn't really know what he was doing" to the extent that he didn't even know how to release the parking break to leave South Station (and had to have 2 other bus operators board his bus to release it for him) -Bus Operator #1 left South Station knowing that he did not have "the hours" to safely deliver his passengers to New York City but was told to leave anyway by MegaBus management -Bus Operator #1 stopped his bus at the end of a highway on-ramp (most dangerous part of a road) to re-inform his management at MegaBus that he did not have the hours to make it to New York -Bus Operator #1 exited the highway 1.5 hours after we departed and parked in a Laundromat Parking Lot in West Hartford, CT (a dangerous and violent city) -Bus Operator #1, while pulling into the aforementioned parking lot, crashed the undercarriage of the bus into the curb. This impact sent luggage stored in the above compartments crashing down and, more importantly, destroyed the hydraulic system of the bus which is what gives the bus shock-absorption on streets and highways, prevents the windshield from cracking/shattering and inuring/killing passengers, and also (obviously!) allows the bus to "clear" curbs and such -Bus Operator #1 phoned for a new driver only after we had parked in the laundromat (instead of coordinating a "meet up" spot earlier in the evening). This forced all passengers to stay in the parking lot, in a dangerous city/neighborhood, for 2 hours when this could have been avoided -Bus Operator #2 arrived at approximately 9pm and proceeded on to New York City in the right lane of the highway at a rate of 40-45mph. This, with good reason, seriously upset the passengers who had been over an hour delayed to begin with and then forced to wait another 2 hours in the aforementioned parking lot. Bus Operator #2 informed me, when I went to speak with him, that it was because MegaBus management had informed him that driving any faster would shatter the windshield because the hydraulic system had been ruined by Bus Operator #1 -Bus Operator #2 made several wrong turns within the city limits of NYC, including driving the wrong way up 1 way streets and sharply entering/exiting highway and interstate exits. It was so bad, in fact, that several individuals called 911 and one young woman's father cut off our bus at a red light and demanded she be let off. MegaBus, clearly, hires bus drivers that are too inexperienced to safely transport hundreds/thousands of people and the Management team is obviously void of the sound judgment that a company servicing the general public should have. I know that it is unreasonable to request that their license to operate in the state be revoked but I think something must be done. It's a privilege to operate a business in this town, not a right that comes without rules. read more

Never again will I buy a ticket from Mega Bus. Why? They aren't customer service centered, and you might lose tickets to thin air. I've taken Mega Bus between Boston and NYC innumerable times. Recently, I bought roundtrip tickets for me and my dad. We decided to change the time of the day we were departing Boston, as well as the time of the day we were departing NYC. So, I amended the reservation on the website and paid the $1 amendment fee twice, thinking I was changing the reservation for each passenger. Upon receiving the confirmation email, I saw that our reservation now only included tickets for 1 passenger, versus the 2 original passengers. So, 2 tickets worth $50 just disappeared...into thin air....into the infinite abyss of their abysmal website. A 16 minute phone conversation with Mega Bus explaining the disappearance of 2 tickets and the user unfriendliness of their website amounted to nothing but the lady on the other line telling me that I didn't change the reservation correctly and should've called to change it instead. Um, I'd like to think I am technologically adept and able to change a trivial bus reservation online. Either way, it doesn't help to tell me what I did wrong. The customer is always right, remember? And you just failed our longstanding customer relationship. Thank you for wasting my time and money. Oh, and btw, don't falsely advertise faulty outlets and internet access. read more

Wow, their service has gone way, way downhill. Our bus from NYC was an hour and 15 minutes late arriving to Boston much to our dismay. It was almost entirely due to Megabus farming out the route to DATTCO and DATTCO in turn not having a driver for us. We spent 45 minutes just sitting in the Bridgeport DATTCO bus depot waiting for a new driver who never showed up. There were no announcements made by our first driver until 30 minutes into the wait and we had no clue what the holdup was. We then had to stop in Hartford to pick up another driver. We got stuck in traffic heading out of Hartford that we would have avoided had we not stopped. I have taken Megabus before, but was extremely disappointed this time, to the point that I am not sure that I will take Megabus again. Customer service had no apologies and really nothing to say about our experience. My sister had a similar incident happen to her as well. read more

*Piss poor*. A quick background - I travel a ton for work, between Boston, NYC, and Philadelphia (I'm on a bus probably 150+ times a year). Buses are far more bang for the buck compared to trains, so I've ridden them all. MegaBus is far and away the worst bus service you can take between any of the choices (BoltBus, Megabus, Peter Pan, and the handful of Chinese buses), and my absolute last resort. This past week, I've had to take MegaBus three times. Every single time it was late - the first time it was half an hour late from Boston to NYC, causing me to miss my connecting bus to Philly (also on Megabus because it was a weekend and I booked late), requiring me to pay for another MegaBus - it's not a surprise these tickets are always available. The third, and thankfully final time (which is right now - I'm writing this from the bus), we left 21 minutes late, and I'm worried I'm going to miss my BoltBus to Boston - it leaves at 5:45pm, 1.25 hours after we're supposed to arrive, but MegaBus drivers seem to have a knack for finding the worst possible route and frequently taking more than 2.5 hours to get between NYC and Philadelphia, something I've never dealt with on BoltBus or any Chinatown bus. The staff are the absolute worst - with the Chinatown buses they can be terse, but I can at least chalk that up to somewhat of a language barrier, but they're always at the very least efficient - MegaBus has the unique distinction of not only dismissing all customers as though we're a herd of cattle, but also doing it in the least efficient way I've ever seen. I think it's pretty clear MegaBus should be avoided at all costs. read more

So, I'll start off by saying that for $7.50 round trip Boston to NYC (I booked a couple months in advance), it was definitely not bad. But here are some notes: Boston to NYC, 12:30pm Friday, Labor Day weekend -Left on time. -I got there about 15 minutes in advance and was toward the back of the line. Surprisingly, I still got a window seat. -Because the seats recline and the guy in front of me had it reclined just slightly, I could not open my laptop all the way and had to do a good bit of maneuvering during the trip to use it. -Lost the wireless internet signal about 45 minutes into the trip, never to find it again. -The seats are fine - comfy - but could definitely use more leg room/space between rows. -We got to Penn station about an hour late b/c of rush hour Friday traffic (we were scheduled to get in at 4:50pm). -We then sat on the bus, not being let off, with no explanation for about 20 minutes. An explanation would have been nice - it was frustrating. NYC to Boston, 3:30pm, Monday - Labor day -Left about 15 minutes late, hit some traffic on the highway, still got to Boston 5 minutes early. -This time I attempted to rectify the space issue by sitting in the seat right behind the driver. It was definitely nice in terms of space. -Lost the wireless again, 45 minutes into the trip. -The driver was playing his music loud enough that with my headphones on watching a movie on my laptop, I had to turn it up all the way to the point where sound effect in the movie were hurting my ears, and I could STILL clearly hear the driver's music. I actually leaned forward to ask him to turn it down just slightly and said, "Excuse me" - no reaction. I said it two more times and he completely ignored me. Asshole. It would have been one thing to hear my request and kindly say no, but he totally ignored me. This pissed me off, but whatever. It wouldn't have even been that bad, except he was playing absolutely disgusting Magic 106.7 type soft rock crap and I wanted to puke. THE CONCLUSION: -If you need a cost effective way to get somewhere, go for it. -Next time I will try BoltBus b/c I've heard that their wireless internet stays consistent, there's more leg room, and they have power outlets (which Megabus does not). read more

Where's the zero? I guess you have to give at least one star because you have to go anyway. So here's to Megabus, the company that operates like this because you have no other choice. Gotta be there on time? Don't take Megabus. They'll show up when they feel like it, sit around for whatever the random number generator says, leave at some time or another, and arrive God knows when. So if, for example, you show up early to get a good seat for your 7:30 bus, you'll have earned a good view of a completely empty bus leaving at 7:40, never to return. Them, when the next bus leaves at 8:15, you'll get to hear the hilarious quip about how the 8:00 bus has a slightly smaller capacity, so instead of boarding the line in order of time, they're going to board exclusively passengers with 8:00 tickets, until they realize that they had enough seats after all (LULZ!1!1!11!!!!!) so they'll board a couple more people who slipped them some cash like at a third world airport. Meanwhile you, dear passenger who would have been ready to make with the bribes had you known what the score was, are stuck in line, wondering how much sleep you'll get before you have to be at work in the morning once the bus after the bus after yours arrives. As it turns out, you'll leave an hour and ten minutes late. But how are you going to complain anyway? The internet doesn't work. To anyone who worries, reasonably so, that this is an isolated incident, rest assured that this happens almost every time I'm stuck taking the Megabus. read more

Boston to New York and back via bus was a travel experience I was not looking forward to. I'm not sure if we were lucky or if Megabus is consistently a pleasurable way to get from A to B. The bus was spacious, had large tables (a plus for travel scrabble), and a driver that wasn't a lunatic. Free wi-fi, air conditioning, and enough room for our baggage didn't hurt either. Our luck really stood out however when looking back at our fellow bus companions. No chatterboxes, vomiters, creeps, or crying babies. Despite how easy a target a charter bus service should be to skewer, I really don't have a bad word to say. read more

I honestly do not believe that Megabus is even worthy of one star. It is 4:00 A.M. right now after the bus broke down due to a flat tire. We are stranded in Sturbridge, MA after taking the Bus from New York to Boston at 8:20 P.M. The bus became paralyzed at 11:30 P.M., and at 3:30 A.M. (4 hours later) a mechanic shows up rather than Megabus dispatching another bus to the site to ensure passengers safety return. The bus driver failed to keep passengers informed. I have never been more disgusted or disappointed with this transportation service. This was my first encounter with Megabus and my last. Their poor response to this emergency was inexcusable and unacceptable. I would recommend another bus transportation for traveling. read more

Yes, Megabus typically has the cheapest fares, but if anything goes wrong, you are at the mercy of the worst customer service and least accountable management imaginable. I do not exaggerate when I say that this company is quite possibly in violation of criminal fraud statutes. Consumer protection agencies should be investigating this company if they are not already. (I may have tipped off a few interested parties myself). For the record, my experience went like this: 1. Due to a cookies error, bad website programming, or a scam on the part of Megabus, I was charged for two extra tickets I did not order, doubling the charge to my credit card. This new amount only showed up after the confirm payment screen! 2. I emailed clear instructions to to Megabus in order to fix the error, but 3. Customer service canceled the wrong tickets. 4. I tried further emails, but got nonsensical responses directed to problems I was not having. I am not kidding when I number these at over a dozen. 5. I called and politely explained the problem to several layers of customer service before being escalated to a manager. The manager ("Odine" or "Odean" or something similar) told me he'd call me back. 6. He did not call back, so I did, several times, to follow up. Eventually, when I got the manager back on the phone he told me I was wrong, my complaint had already been dealt with, he would hang up and refuse to take further calls from me on the subject. 7. I contacted my credit card company and they investigated. They recovered most of my money from Megabus and paid a small amount themselves to cover the remainder under dispute. Long story short: If anyone is scammed out of their money by Megabus like I was, I would recommend filing a dispute with your credit card company to recover it. If enough people do this, I would like to think it might have some effect on the way Megabus does business (or puts it out of business). read more

Most people will only post negative reviews. Mine is positive. I would take Megabus again; for the price it's a gem. Also easy and reasonable to change reservation on line. Yes it was late coming and going, but air conditioning and wifi worked for the entire trip. Restroom was fine; antibacterial full both ways. I departed from Boston on Thursday 6/15 and returned on Friday 6/17. We arrived in New York pretty much on time, but we were late (2 hours) coming back. Partly due to traffic & bad weather. But, I also believe there may have been a problem with the bus. About an hour or so we stopped at a rest stop; they switched drivers AND did a safety inspection. The person sitting beside me said in all the times he has been on Megabus that has never been done. After the safety inspection, even when traffic was light, the driver never went over 50. When we got close to Boston, probably in Brighton, something began to beep. I suspect there was something that was not serious that did not allow the bus to speed up. In any event it was a great, comfortable and inexpensive way to get in and out of New York and I would do it again. read more

Megabus, is a mega bus in its character, the adjective is warranted in a good way. I rode this bus during their opening week from NYC to Boston, and honestly at $ .50 a ticket the price couldn't be beat. The driver was a local Bostonian, and was very nice. The tickets I've found tend to be cheaper than Bolt. I'm riding Megabus all the way to DC from Boston, so you know to sit through that they must be good, and they are. read more

Save yourself a lot of time and frustration -- take Fung Wah. I've never seen worse processes or customer service as on megabus. I booked a round trip from Boston to NYC on megabus and ended up standing in line for over an hour on both legs with NO ONE able to give me any clue when (or if) a bus was going to be loaded anytime soon. It's $15 on Fung Wah, you pay when you arrive, they get you on a bus in approx. 10 minutes, and it's fast and hassle free. I ended up spending the extra $30 on my last trip to take Fung Wah both ways IN SPITE OF the fact that I'd already paid for round trip (~$50) tickets on megabus. The hassle wasn't worth my time! read more

I took Megabus from Boston to NYC recently. The bus showed up an hour and 45 minutes late. There was no explanation. A Dattco employee who claimed not to be affiliated and was just passing along the info came and told us that it would be at least an hour late according to what he heard over the radio. No Megabus representative seemed able to leave their desk to come tell us about the delay. Once the bus did arrive from NYC there was a problem with it, so we had to wait for another bus to arrive that apparently wasn't available an hour before when the incoming one was late. Once on the bus there was no power and no internet. I'm happily writing this review on my way back to Boston from the comfort of Bolt Bus where there is power, AC, and internet. Never again Megabus. read more

Due to traffic arrived at the station to see the bus leave the lot. Got a ride to the next stop for the bus ahead of it, but was not allowed to use the ticket I had already purchased because it didn't have the right "starting" point on it. Same exact bus that I already purchased one seat on, I had to purchase a second seat on. Clearly a way to rip off the customers. Last trip with Mega-rip-off! read more

So, since I am sitting in the bus terminal for an extra hour, I thought I should write a review of my Megabus experience so far. I was planning on taking the 6am bus to New York City, to enjoy the day with a friend. We had planned to get tickets at the terminal, just in case we were unable to make it there by 530. I think our excitement for the coming day in New York aided us in being prompt and we were able to get to the bus terminal by 530. However, when we got there, no agents were on duty to purchase tickets. There was a sign to see another bus company at the gate, along with a phone number. We walked to the gate, but alas, no agent! So we tried to buy the tickets online, but only the 7 o'clock was showing. We tried the listed phone number and guess what, they aren't open till 730. Surely, we thought that when the bus driver comes, he will help us get tickets. But we were so wrong. He couldn't sel tickets, which I understand, but wouldn't it make sense to allow us to buy tickets for the 7 o'clock and ride on the 6 o'clock. Especially, when there were only about 10 people on that bus! I am still waiting for the 7 o'clock bus, I am hopeful that the rest of my megabus experience will be a positive one.....but I guess I will just have to wait and see.... To be continued... read more

Megabus is so bad that it makes even the Chinatown bus services look luxurious. On-time performance does not exist. Staff act like zombies that want to eat your brain. And the buses themselves are terribly designed with no onboard storage. Do yourself a favor and go with Bolt, Peter Pan, or even... Fung Wah. True story. read more

I was on the Bus traveling from Boston, South Station to Philly on Sunday leaving at 9:10. We left at 9:30 a.m. An hour into our trip at 10:30, we stopped at the Charlton Service Plaza Rest stop,in Massachusetts, because someone called the corporate office and complained the bus was tilting. The driver told us that she felt safe to drive the bus. Corporate had said with the complaint, the bus would not be safe so we had to pull over. The driver stayed in contact with corporate and other bus drivers trying to find us a new bus to come pick us up. First she said a mechanic would need to come, but that it was all the way in Randolph. We were at this rest stop until 1:20 p.m. when the next Megabus arrived to pick us up heading to NY. It was not said to us if the bus going to NY would also head to Philly, or if we would have to change to a 3rd bus. We get on the bus, and this one is not air conditioned, and there is not enough outlets to charge your phone. The first bus had plenty. At 4:50 p.m. our bus clipped the car in front of us in a tunnel in NY. We pulled over as soon as we were out of the tunnel. Again, no communication about Philly, and i notice several passengers getting off the bus and getting their luggage. I get off the bus, and walk several blocks to Penn Station, and took a NJ transit to Trenton. I paid for a round trip. i was able to be reimbursed for my trip to Philly, however i was not for my trip back. This bus is not capable of emergency issues that could happen en route. I will never use this bus again, and i really hope people, including corporate read about this horrific and exhausting trip. read more

Update: By 5pm, myself and another woman on the bus (who I did not know previously) had had enough. Being reasonable people, we understood that things like this do occur but the customer service end was just completely unacceptable. We broached the driver and explained we get that unfortunately hes the messenger for all this but we needed answers. He gladly called his supervisor again and placed him on speaker phone. His supervisor once again said "we'll be there in an hour" and was not apologetic and was actually perturbed we bothered him. Myself and my partner in crime decided to take matters into our own hands. By the grace of God an empty 20 person shuttle (coach seat style) arrived at the rest stop to grab a bite to eat. The driver agreed to take us to Penn Station in NYC for $20 per person. While although it was one of the more random experiences of my life, I did get to NYC not via Megabus. Moral of the story: DO NOT USE MEGABUS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE UNLESS OF LIFE OR DEATH MATTER On an interesting side note. We learned Megabus is subcontracted by Dattco Inc. read more

Less than a cup of coffee to NYC- amazing! I took it once to NY and the bus was pretty empty. Only give or take 10 people. The driver was nice but no stops at McDonalds or BK. He only pulled over to use the restroom himself. Pro: Cheap Prices, New Buses, Convenient Stop (if you like downtown), Free Wifi Cons: No stops, New Bus smell may be a bit too much, and no entertainment? read more

It's a bus! What else can you expect honestly? And for the money they charge you shouldn't have high expectations on anything. Tickets to be purchased online only and they need to be print out before boarding. The bus I took from Boston to NYC left right on time and arrive as scheduled. The bus was comfortable enough for what it is. The Wi-Fi didn't work the entire trip but I wasn't expecting it to either. I sat on the second floor, last row and I was very comfortable. Not a bad experience honestly. read more

Had a great trip to NYC on the Megabus, last month out of the back bay. We scored tickets on the cheap, and were pleasantly suprised how new, clean and comfortable the bus was. We left on time and arrived in NYC 20 minutes ahead of promised time. It was a smooth ride and I would definitely leave the driving to them again. read more

The megabus service is amazing. The people below may have had unfortunate experiences, but perhaps their expectations are too high. I paid $17 for a round trip bus ticket from dc to Boston and the pick up locations are in convenient safe areas, I had a whole seat to myself to sleep across, people were courteous in terms of noise, and both wifi and power have worked the whole trip. Only on one of my trips to Philly did someone obnoxiously talk on their phone and it was somewhat crowded. Also, the buses i've ridden have always left on time and arrived either on time or early. I'd like to thank megabus for providing such nice convenient cheap ways to travel... read more

If I could give zero stars I would!! Horrible service from Megabus Boston- New York. Firstly my early morning bus got cancelled at last minute notice and I was randomly assigned to a different one. I didn't even get the reserved seat I had paid extra for! On the way back the bus wasn't even a Megabus, it was some random company bus. Again the seat didn't have a table or charging points! I couldn't get my work done, and it was a complete waste of the extra money I paid! I will definitely not take this service ever again. read more

Megabus used to be really great. Low fares, wifi, the ability to charge your device(s), a direct four hour trip to NYC from Boston ... Recently (as in the past two years), they've really gotten bad. Return trips from NYC to Boston are routinely more than one hour late, so you are forced to stand in line outside - in the cold. Most times there are no functional outlets. And for the past year I have not been able to connect to the wifi. Customer service is hit or miss. A customer service agent once hung up on me - which resulted in my inability to purchase a bus ticket - which left me stranded in NYC. When I reported this I was offered a free trip. Today my sister took a megabus back to NYC and her bus broke down. I'm officially done with megabus. It was all good when it was $1. But if I'm going to pay $30, I might as will go with boltbus or whatever else. read more

My friend and I were spending the day in NYC so we chose MegaBus as our mode of transportation. We were departing from Providence at 7am. We got there around 6:45am as the instructions said and the bus was right there waiting for us. Once it was our turn to board, we sat on the second level. It was very clean and comfortable. Comfortable enough for me to fall asleep on the way there! We got dropped off 45 minutes ahead of schedule which was great! On the way back, the stop is in a creepy area but we are still alive haha. This isn't the bus' fault but there was traffic backed up for an hour and a half on the way back. Kinda made no sense.. 11pm on a Sunday. HM? I will definitely be riding MegaBus again. read more

I really wish i read the reviews before choosing megabus.... The 9/3 trip from Boston to NYC was pretty much what I expected. The 9:30pm bus didn't arrive until 9:50pm. Bus drove about 20 miles below the speed limit the whole way through. Our bus finally arrived at the drop off point at 2:30am, 45 minutes behind schedule. The 9/6 trip from NYC to Boston was a nightmare. As suggested in their email, I arrived promptly at 11:40 to board the 12:10pm bus. It was pouring rain outside and there was already a long line of people waiting to board the Boston bus. By 12:40 there was still no bus in sight. No one bothered to come by and give us an update. When I finally asked the guy at the kiosk all he said was the bus was stuck in traffic. When I asked him where, he just shrugged and repeated that the bus is in stuck in traffic. By 1:15pm our bus was still nowhere to be found. No one had any info on the eta or where the bus is..and by now people are lining up for the 2pm bus. After 2 hours of waiting in the rain...our bus finally pulls in at 1:50pm. Bus finally arrives at South Station at 6:45pm, 2.5 hours past the projected arrival time. Meanwhile, no one at Megabus bothered to apologize for the inconvenience. Yep, they just pretended like everything was business as usual. I think i will take my business elsewhere from now on. For a $39.90 round trip, I didn't expect first class service. I didn't even expect the bus to be on time....but 2.5 hours late warrants at least an apology and a good explanation. How about a little customer service? Or some common decency? It would've been nice to get some updates as we stood outside in the rain...it would've been nice if the staff had been at least moderately apologetic for the delays. Congratulations Megabus, you've lost another customer. I wish I listened to the other reviewers and booked a seat on Lucky Star, Fung Wah, or Boltbus instead...oh well, next time! read more

Never on time. they consistently turn a 4.5 hr trip into a 5.5 hr trip. They take bad routes and make unnecessary stops to change drivers- not to get food, or use the bathroom, change freakin drivers. He pulled off the highway, and onto a side road to change drivers. Use Bolt or chinatown read more
