As abundant as Chinese bakeries are throughout Chinatown, many quietly fade in obscurity. One such business could be Mee Ho (美好), which is one of the older businesses in Hong Kong Mall and has been perpetually overlooked to where it rarely gets any recognition -- online or off. While I've never seen that many folks here, I'm willing to bet a steady flow of locals have kept this place running for years.
With only a few chairs and a small table, it's safe to assume it's mainly a takeout business. I'm willing to bet a big part of why they don't get many visitors is the lack of savory options, in which most of their pastries lack some of kind of meat component. To be fair, none of the things I've had here will win any awards but I do think there are some halfway decent items here that include their egg tarts, peanut mochi rice cakes, and sesame balls. I would only consider any of these if they were fresh out of the morning oven but would be weary as the afternoon / evenings creep up.
The other main sell for them is their array of breads. More specifically, their custard based breads, taro breads, pandan, and Malaysian sponge cake. There is also a nice display of cookies and pastries with cream, but I would avoid them since often times they're a lot more stale than they appear.
This is a cash only business and the prices are on the lower side. The Cantonese speaking business owner is a very sweet man and this is very much a family owned and operated establishment. I would ask about which pastries are freshest and go from there. read more
