Was told they had amazing banh mi. I bought four and they were okay and very overpriced. The prepared foods should've been refrigerated for health reasons and were not. Cleanliness is definitely not taken serious here. I wonder what their health score is. I don't recommend this establishment.

My sardine banh mi was absolutely spectacular. In terms of sandwich architecture, probably the best banh mi I have ever had. Huge and still only $5 is crazy. My cafe sua day was also great.

Can't believe I have been coming for years and not made a review yet! This is my bad but seeing how they always have a line during lunch hour I know I didn't have to gate keep this place. The banh mi 10/10 for the price of $5 they loaded my sandwich with combo cut of meats and veggies. My go to is the combo, bbq pork, and bbq beef. First one is standard, the bbq pork&beef is sweet savory, and they are hot sandwich (they usually ask if you want it warmed up). Besides the banh mi they also have a variety of Vietnamese desserts, cakes, rice with meat to go, and spring rolls on the side. I love their bitter melon with meat filling soup, it's very light and healthy in the summer, but they only have them occasionally so it's very lucky if you see them in the fridge. Staffs are friendly, they may have some language barrier but they will understand simple English. So just order with number, and modify, if needed, with basic English plus hand gestures haha the food will taste yummy no matter what they put don't worry

We're visiting Houston and read that this place was one of the Bahn Mi shops to visit! Located in Hong Kong mall off of Bellaire Boulevard, it's a tiny shop. They only take cash. Got the combo Bahn Mi and a Coke Zero. Can't believe that a can of coke is $2 but the sandwich is only $5. The bread is crusty, light, and freshly toasted. They don't skimp on the filling. I love the amount of pickle vegetables. I was a little turned off that the lady making my sandwich was looking at her phone and didn't change her gloves

Can't believe I've been going to Hong Kong market for groceries and have not stopped by Alpha Bakery until today. I think I was shunned away some by the lower reviews in the past, but don't let that sway you. I've seen plenty of people recommend this place on reddit and foodie FB groups and I'm super happy to have tried it out to make my own impression. I've had a lot of banh mis since it's one of my top 3 favorite foods and this is now my 2nd favorite banh mi place in Houston from a taste perspective, BUT #1 in terms of overall ranking factoring in value ($5 / banh mi, cash only). My favorite from a taste perspective is Roostar, but that can be double if not triple the price of this place depending on add ons. What I love about this place, service is fast and friendly, bread is toasty fresh and light, the ratio of ingredients were well balanced with no skimping of meat, and as mentioned above, it's cheap! I got their thit nuong (grilled pork), highly recommend. They also sell a bunch of snacks and other goodies. I also love baos and had to cop a box when I saw they made mini ones with eggs and sausage inside. $15 for a box of 9 mini baos. Again, that price game is great. The taste was great too! Moist, full quail egg inside, ratios spot on, would get again! They also sell a fried version, I gotta try that next time. They have a couple tables outside the bakery if you want to eat right away. I'll definitely be coming back!

The banh mis are unmatched. I always get the dac biet aka house special. They are super sweet and will ask you if you want the vegetables separate. One of the best Vietnamese sandwich places in all of Houston.

Located inside Hong Kong City Mall. It's a good place to grab bánh Mì and other snacks.

I absolutely love this hole in the wall. It is one of the best Houston banh mi shops. I don't know how the reviews are not higher. They have amazing banh mi with high quality ingredients. They do not skimp out on the meat and the veggies inside taste super fresh. Their bread is also so good. Besides banh mi they have a huge assortment of other Vietnamese foods and desserts so I would highly recommend coming here. Service is very quick and authentic for sure haha. Most of them do just speak Vietnamese.

I've been coming to Alpha Bakery for a while now and it's on my weekly rotation! The bánh mì here are unbelievable! There is usually a line but they have about 4 people behind the counter making them it's like a little bánh mì factory! This bakery is cash only and all sandwiches are $5 a cost effective way to feed multiple people plus it's quick. Everything is fresh and they bake the bread in store so it's so fluffy and crunchy. The bakery also offers ready made meals/treats that you can grab and go. The staff is always friendly and happy to help. A must try inside of Hong Kong Market!

Banh mi shop that I came across when walking around the mall The prices were unbeatable compared to CA-- $5.00?! I'm there! BBQ Pork Banh Mi - goodness I was going to inhale this sandwich LOL it was so fresh and tasty Combo Cold Cut Pork was also two thumbs up Highly recommend stopping by if you're want Banh Mi!

The nostalgia that people have about Alpha Bakery are usually folks who either grew up in Alief or Houstonians who frequented Hong Kong Mall and fell in love with their banh mi. It pains me to write this but given my less than stellar experiences as of late, I believe their heydey is over. In many ways, Alpha reminds me so much of businesses I'd frequent back in NYC. It's dodgy, family owned, cash only, and has the blessing of the local community. It's also dingy, somewhat unorganized, and even a little cluttered (#1), which are all things I welcome fervently. The fact they have overtaken the space for the now defunct Viet Huong (#2) for storage space feels somewhat hilarious but also very on brand. They've even left the sign up for now. Additionally, they have all the dynamics that make up many Vietnamese bakeries in general: lots of banh mi, a whole variety of baos, and a nice selection of pastries and snacks ready for takeout. On occasion, there's even a small line of people waiting here, which I take as a good sign. But the part where it all kind of falls apart is the food. I haven't enjoyed my banh mis as of late, since the breads felt stale and worse off, the paté, butter, and pickled veg were all very off. I thought the head cheese, cha lua, and deli meats were average for a dac biet, but I was really scratching my head with their xa xiu and thit nuong. Their banh bao was okay and the paté so was also very average. I spotted a somewhat unsightly banh con so (madeleine cookie), which was not a good look (#3) and made me not as interested in getting more stuff. Service wise, it's always going to be somewhere in the middle. Bonus points for speaking any Vietnamese and remember to bring cash as they don't accept credit cards. Seating is limited, it's best to get in and then out. I'll do the latter a little more often now and hope things turn around soon. __________ (#1) To NY'ers reading: straight bodega vibes son. (#2) Viet Huong: https://www.yelp.com/biz/viet-huong-restaurant-houston-2 (#3) No thank you. Nope.

    Banh mi Dac Biet
    Benedict C.

$5 BAMH MI DAC BIET. That's it. That's the review. Honestly, I think the price alone makes this place worthy of 5 stars but the banh mi was actually very good. I've paid double or triple the price for inferior sandwiches. The baguette had a good crunch. They use liver pate and all the classic meats. The vegetables had a good crunch and really complemented the salty and savory flavors of the meats. If I lived in the area I'd come back all the time. Cash only.

    Cold cut banh mi
    Canny F.

Picked up two Banh mi to go. One was filled with the cold cuts and the other was the BBQ meat. Bread is fresh and great. They lightly toast it for you. They also ask if you want the veggies separated so the bread doesn't get soggy - this was such a great idea! So we assembled the sandwich when we got home. The portion size was great as well. You can't complain about the price. It's cash only. The bbq pork looks great but it wasn't. Unfortunately a lot of chunks of fat that you can't even chew and have to spit it out. I was originally skeptical about it being fully cooked too (the color just didn't seem right but to then realize it was a bunch of fat) so I baked it and the color was the same. Apologies for being skeptical. You can't really go wrong with the cold cuts. Is it anything special though? Eh. You definitely get more than you pay for in terms of value. Why? For the price you paid, you get fresh bread with protein and a full belly. Travel a bit north and you get this quality for double the price with less stuffing. I wouldn't go for the BBQ pork or maybe ask them to chop it into smaller pieces? When you take a bite, the entire piece of pork follows and you are left with minimal meat for your next few bites unless you pull it apart with your teeth and fingers - this is what I did to make sure I had meat in every bite vs my partner just had bread bites haha. But then we realized it's the parts with a lot of fat that does this. I guess that's why people pay more for marbled meat? They also put a lot of mayo so you might want to tell them to put less. He puts mayo on majority of his dishes and likes mayo yet complained about the abundance of mayo so I guess that's considered too much? Overall, above average for the bread, a tad below average for the BBQ pork and dead on average for the cold cuts.

A bounty of fresh ingredients and meats to make your perfect sandwich

On the other side of the cafe, there are tables to sit and eat, and there are menus stacked up on the counter to view. When I walked in, there were two guys sitting at a table, so there was no service or staff to wait on them at all (probably not needed). The cashier at the counter was quick in totaling up the cost and packaging of my containers into a bag, so it was an easy 'get and go' deal for me. I tried the fried rice, which was mixed with vegetables and tofu, and it was a little bland - had to add black pepper and spicy sauce to eat it. The stir fried beans, carrots, and tofu was lightly seasoned as well, so if you like well seasoned dishes, this would not be the ideal location. I have yet to try the variety of other dishes and desserts they offer, but they do offer clean and healthy vegan options.

The aunties can't speak English but lucky me there was a young man working who can, he speaks mandarin too. He recommended me to get this plate of spring rolls. They have this one in my picture and another box that's with the vegetarian meats. The spring rolls' texture is nothing what I expected. From the look of it I thought it's got crispy filling but it was rather tasting stale. So I took a closer look, I think there are dried carrots and shallots or onions, and a lot of vermicelli. Personally, I would like the fresh veggies over the dried ones, because when they turn moist they become little too chewy for me. Also I wish the ratio of the vermicelli and veggies are more balanced, the rolls' flavor overall is still very refreshing to eat though. The fish sauce was good too, not too salty and fishy, it's on the more fragrant side. For this box of rolls I paid $10, which is little pricey for me since I have tried better for half that price. But maybe I will be back again and try other things on the menu one day.

Let it be known that this item, the Cháo lòng (pork offal porridge), was one of my favorite bites of the entire 2-week trip. It was piping hot, fresh, and very well seasoned. I got the combo banh mi with extra pate and my partner got the grilled pork. They do allow you to customize your banh mi so that's always a plus (you pay for some of the customizations). It took a bit of time for us to get our banh mi but again, considering the line wasn't awful. The banh mi themselves weren't anything spectacular for either of us. The bread wasn't as light and crisp as some other spots so that was a bit of a let down. I enjoyed the cold cuts though and did think they were pretty flavorful. I couldn't tell I got extra pate but did pay for it so not sure how to compare it to their normal combo. For a Houston staple, I think I was hoping for more but I was pretty whelmed by this spot. Its cash only, so make sure to bring some cash if you want to try it. However, given the multitude of options, I likely wouldn't go out of my way to get a banh mi here but if I'm near by and find myself with a bit or cash, I could be convinced.

The baguette here was solid -- crispy on the outside, soft and airy inside, which is always the most important part of a banh mi. They definitely got the bread right. The fillings, however, could've been more bountiful. I found the meat-to-bread ratio a bit light for my liking. I ordered the grilled pork banh mi, mainly because I like that lemongrass flavor. It was decent, but I'm not sure it's their go-to sandwich. Flavor was okay for me -- enjoyable, just not something that immediately wowed me. My wife had the shredded chicken banh mi, which she seemed to enjoy more than I did mine. A couple of friends ordered the meatball banh mi, and in hindsight, that might've been the move. It seems like the popular choice here and probably what I should've tried. One thing that stood out: this is the first banh mi shop I've been to that offers multiple sandwich sizes, which I thought was interesting and kind of nice depending on how hungry you are. Overall, good bread, decent execution, and a convenient stop -- especially if you're in the area or grabbing brunch before heading somewhere nearby (like Space Center Houston). It may not beat LA banh mi, but it holds its own depending on what you order.

Nguyen Ngo was our first banh mi stop and also our last. I'm really very particular about my banh mi and have a firm POV on what a great dac biet (combo/special) should include (and accept that this is my own preference and that others may disagree!). My checklist below is typically where I find the most variance from shop-to-shop, as almost all places include the requisite jalapeños and cilantro: - Bread: soft with a thin, crispy crust and the crust should not be so hard that it scratches the top of your mouth - Condiments: pate should be fairly generous and flavorful and there shouldn't be so much mayo that it's dripping out of the bread - Pickled veggies: should be close to 50/50 between carrots and daikon - Cold cuts: has to have cha lua (steamed pork sausage) and gio thu (Vietnamese head cheese, preferably one that doesn't have much of the ear as it's too crunchy). I'm fine if it also includes thit nguoi, but don't require it. I don't like thit nuong is included though, as I find it makes the sandwich too heavy So how does Nguyen Ngo stack up against my list? - Bread: 10/10, probably the best bread I've had for banh mi. No idea if they bake it themselves or if they purchase it, but they're definitely doing it right - Condiments: 10/10, perfect balance, but the standout was definitely the pate. It was creamy with a strong flavor, but not overly liver-tasting. I thought about it all week and even considered flying a tub of it back home with me (I did not, but might do it next time) - Pickled veggies: 5/10, mostly carrots with a tiny bit of daikon. Also leaned a touch more sweet than I prefer and maybe not pickled for quite long enough? It was nice and crunchy, but the main drawback was not having enough daikon in the mix - Cold cuts: 8/10, they don't offer gio thu or the kind of cha lua that I like in my banh mi, but the thit, jambon, and saucisson were a good enough combo that it didn't throw me off too much We ordered their dac biet on the first day, which includes this shredded chicken that I really didn't care for. The consistency was almost like pork floss, but less tasty. On the last day, we chose the 4 ingredient banh mi and got it with pate, thit, jambon, and saucisson and that was much more to our liking. We bought 9 to take back home to share with our families (plus a couple extra for us), and they did an excellent job of packing the veggies separately!

I tried there grilled BBQ pork baguette and the meat was done really well! They will have a butter spread along the base of the baguette with a little bit of mayonnaise to help give the filling a premiere texture. I just wish that they would do the same to the ceiling and not just the base of the baguette. Fair warning, if you drop by later on in the day, close to their closing hours, the baguette may not be as moist, still somewhat crunchy though. I highly recommend going earlier on the day to catch the baguette when it's made fresh. Service is standard for this area of town. They'll prepare the baguette in less than 5 minutes and will call your name when ready. Another fair warning, this place was cash only. Come prepared. I go for the thap cam and dac biet. can't go wrong with the classics. And oh man their Bo Ne. Sizzling steak and eggs. Delish. Not to mention 14$, for simplicity at its finest. Their butter and pate are yummy. I go too much cause it's so close to work.

This restaurant is very quiet and not too busy but there's a lot of people coming in and out and ordering to go. If you want to dine in, there's a few tables for you to enjoy your food. First time I was here, I ordered just a combination banh mi. It was delicious, meats were filling and seasoned nicely. The bread was toasted just right. Decided to come back last night with my friend. I got their Bo ne and a Thai tea & my friend ordered the shredded chicken banh mi. I thought that my dish would be shareable but it wasn't. The portions were small for the price but I still left pretty full. The sauce on the Bo ne was delicious and seasoned perfectly. Bread was crispy and flaky on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Idk if they make their pate/butter in-house but it was the best I've had. The steak was also tendered and the egg was cooked just right with a runny yolk. My Thai tea was solid but wasn't as sweet as I would've liked it. My friend shredded chicken banh mi was also very good. Crispy baguette, chicken was tendered and veggies were filling. Overall, this is a good hidden spot for some good banh mi. The service was quick and the owner was nice. The person who brought out the food was very kind. They also have a buy 5 sandwiches and get one free. Prices are reasonable and the food is good. Will I come back? Yes. I need to try their banh mi bo kho next time.
