Horrible experience. Few months ago, I visited the Salon to have a trim and to reshape my shoulder length bob. I showed pictures, asked for 1" off, which we agreed on. Unfortunately the stylist cut over 5" off my length. She started on one side at chin length and ended up cutting the other side above my ear. I made a 6:10pm appointment with someone over the phone and arrived early at 6:00pm. I said hello when I walked in and no one even asked my name or said hi back, they just looked at each other. I waited for ONE HOUR before I got up to say I was leaving and asked to not be charged since I gave my credit card number. The owner informed me that she didn't know that she had me as a client and that the system was messed up. I want to give a big shout out to Kristina, she is an amazing hair dresser/colorist! I met with her a week ago to discuss dyeing my hair different colors. I was very interested in a peek-a-boo style. I have never colored my hair in vibrant colors and finally wanted to try something fun. I was afraid my hair would not take well to bleach but that was not a problem. Then I was anxious that the colors I chose might not look good on me. Each step of the way, Kristina, explained the process, gave advice and positive encouragement. One of the worst, choppiest cuts I've ever gotten. After reading good reviews and having friends who go here, I had a cut with the owner. It looks botched. It was the opposite of what I asked for. I showed her pics of a previous cut, and I just wanted a minor change from that, but it looks nothing like it. It does look like a badly executed attempt at an 80's shag, but way too short with terrible form. Often, you may worry a cut is bad but people tell you it's not - no one has disagreed that this is a terrible cut. read more

Update: the root touch up has faded after 3 color safe high end shampoos, so now I see a band that's not the regrowth. No longer as impressed as I was earlier. ------- Aside from having my temperature checked (my stylist did NOT have her's checked when she arrived as I waited and witnessed), I do not feel they are taking any cleanliness precautions for Covid. I did not see chairs cleaned after clients left before others sat down, nor did I feel comfortable being there. The filth of days old hair on the floor showed they don't care in general about the cleanliness of the salon. There were 3 employees (along with owner) there all sitting down while my hair color was on. None of them lifted a finger to clean anything. My stylist never even introduced herself or asked my name when meeting me for the first time, or during the entire appt. Or apologized for being late as I waited for her to arrive. I will say that the hair color actually was better than I expected, but I will not be returning as their lack of caring for cleanliness or customer service leaves a very poor impression on the company. read more

Jackie DiFazio is a hair wizard. I am EXTREMELY picky as I know what I want when it comes to my hair. I have very thick hair and it is tricky to get the color right (it wants to go reddish). But Jackie handles color(cool blond streaks) and the cut ( shaggy) like a pro. I consistently get stopped by strangers asking me who does my hair. Jackie also does what YOU want, not what she thinks you should have. So many hairstylists do not listen. Jackie always wants you to be happy when you walk out the door. read more

The studio itself is super cute but this place seems sketchy...having to pay in advance for services and just an overall sense of unprofessionalism. I see other reviews mentioning that no one greets you or even asks if they can help when you walk in and that's spot on, no welcome or basic hospitality. Both of the stylists I saw seemed inexperienced, and the services were delivered half-assed, honestly. Pricing is fair but the quality of service and the quality of staff are low. I went a couple of times, hoping it would be better, but I won't go back. Maybe there are some good stylists here but the whole experience was off, just a very weird vibe here. Spoke to Rochelle who apparently is new there to consult about my touching up my hair color after seeing my friends hair looked pretty good.. after she sends me to the website to see the prices (and salon) I did not want to spend 500+ she went on to berate me when I told her I will keep her posted because it's a lil pricy .. instead of just saying ok keep me posted etc.. she went on to berate me! telling me 1. I am not your friend so I'm not giving you a discount (didn't ask!) 2.this is standard price in the city, and that I should save up like I would for "a pair of shoes" 3. if I can't afford I should go to Supercuts loll. I read good reviews on here for a certain stylist. She gave me a side shave, which was fine. (A mistake on my part but not hers). I asked for a blonde balayage and what I got was a yellowy bleached ombre. The texture of my hair was terrible. I was embarrassed to go out. It was almost orange. She kindly "fixed" it but now it is blue/gray. I went here to feel pretty and now feel like I look so disgusting and I'm so sad. My hair is an ashy color. I had more blonde in my hair when I went IN than I do now. I am trying not to cry but it really looks so dumb. I've never experienced this. She is very kind and I enjoyed talking with her but I would say if you are going for a funky color, this place would be fine. If you are looking for a tasteful balayage, keep looking. read more

What. A. Strange. Experience. I booked online for a same day appointment and was placed with "Tara C.". Okay, sure. Cut to my appointment time. I opened the door and said "I have an appointment...." The chair #1 stylist in mid-appointment made eye contact with me and then chose to ignore me. COOL. There was a woman in chair #2 on her phone that didn't look up. There was a woman waiting who stared at me. HOW AM I ALREADY DOING EVERYTHING WRONG? So I almost sit...and then phone lady says "Do you have an appointment?" "Yes." Another woman appears from the middle of the shop to say "Do you have an appointment?" OMG YES. So she has me fill out a half sheet of paper and then says I can go to the chair now. CHAIR #2. PHONE LADY IS TARA C. I almost walked out. Haircut commences. She asks me what I want like how a teenage boy asks their sexual partners how they like it in bed. I'm sure she wanted the answers, but I was not confident that she could carry out my requests. Whatever, right? These split ends needed to GTFO. She tries to make conversation, but it feels like the foreplay of the aforementioned teenage boy. Like...thanks for the effort, but I'm not into faking it today. I ended up with a haircut that was...fine. I asked for something I could easily fix, and then went home and did the rest myself - really making this teenage date come full circle. read more

I've wanted pink hair since being a teenager. While younger and living under moms roof, pink hair wasn't an option. As I got older, working in the real world became a barrier to my pink locks, as well. Now at 26, working as a personal trainer, I am afforded the luxury of doing what I damn please with my hair. So, I spoke to a client of mine and she suggested that I go see Mari at Medusa Salon. Mari was fabulous. Even though my hair required bleaching before it's bright pink pigment, my hair feels healthier than before I dyed it. She payed careful attention to the bleaching process, making sure not to cause damage. The color is bright and wonderful and extremely bold. I love it. The cut has a lot of natural texture, which is awesome because I'm not one to spend loads of time styling my hair. Also, it's worth mentioning that Mari has an awesome personality. I was at the salon for quite some time throughout the entire process and she def engages you with banter and good conversation. Whether or not I stay pink or decide to go purple or back to blonde, I found my hair stylist. I will not be going to anyone else. read more

I've been on the search for a salon that can handle curly hair outside of Devachaun in Manhattan. I'm so happy to have finally found it!!! Not only did they shape my unruly, curly, poorly cut hair, but they also fixed a bad cut done on my daughter! The service was amazing and MJ is incredible. Jamie Starr is amazing. He transformed my long fading blue/dark roots showing hair into magical beautiful blue hair in a few hours. When it says on the Medusa site that he's a Manic Panic Specialist, they aren't lying. He bleached, heated, washed, dyed, washed, dyed again, shared his skittles and then trimmed while always being super nice. He gave me a ton of tips as well to keep my hair healthy. been going here for years, sadly the last color experience with them came out pretty bad and i have had to go to another park slope salon to have it fixed. came in with reference photos that were of me (!!!) asking for the exact same color and ended up with the NOTHING i asked for, the attempt to fix it left me with thick, heavy blonde streaks that are not blended on my brunette hair. i keep telling myself it's just hair, but it's been so much time and money wasted :( read more

Service was slow; shop was empty; I had an appointment. I was in the chair a really long time; received a very average cut and blow. Asked for layers; got none. Pricetag? A whopping $120. I've been seeing Mari for years now. She is an expert's expert, a pro's pro, when it comes to cool curly cuts. I had been going to Seagull in the West Village for years, getting treated by both Shaun (in the early days) and the salon's stylists at the new location. But Mari is like a mistress of magic. She was my first Medusa, my first Brooklyn Badass. I've become entangled in her gift, and it's like a religious experience every 8 weeks. When I hinted that I wanted to start training my thin locks toward a 'medium shag bob' or possibly a 'medium shag bang,' she got it. When I told her I've been unhappy with my color, she fixed it perfectly. She's infinitely patient and gentle, and was born with an elder's wisdom and intuition. Shaun Surething, you may have a kindred spirit in Brooklyn at Medusa, and her name is Mari. P. S. The place is doing swift business again, and they're taking cleanliness to the higher-than-standards level. They're disinfecting without odors in between each customer, and they remain masked throughout the visit. They require masks of customers, offer them when needed, and take temperature at the door, which is recorded. Yesterday was my third visit during the pandemic; I went one time before I was vaccinated when Mari and I were the only two in the salon. She kept the door open for me, and we were fully and safely masked. Medusa is a trusted, safe, cleaner-than-clean operation. I've been going to this salon for the last year for cut and color. I started out with Jessica Rose, who was great at first, but ended up cutting my hair too short one time (when I made it very clear I was growing it out) and doing a terrible job on my roots another (my hair is platinum and there were pieces that were yellow, and some sections of the root barely bleached at all). So I switched to Brian, who was also good the first couple of appointments. Then last week I went in for a color and cut (simple one-length bob). The color was fine but he cut my hair so that it was noticeably shorter on one side than the other (not on purpose). I pointed this out while still in the chair, but he said it was just the styling. I went home and after a few days realized no, my hair was uneven and looked crappy. I went back in for a correction yesterday and Brian admitted that it was crooked. He took a few minutes to hurry through some snips and when he was done, I still had to point out extra pieces of hair that needed cutting to even it out. When I got home, I saw it was STILL crooked and had to take a pair of household scissors to cut a few more pieces Brian missed. It's so disappointing, because I love the vibe of this salon and the staff are very friendly. But to spend over $200 on services that I later have to correct with craft scissors at home is just disappointing. And I'm just not comfortable switching stylists at Medusa a third time, so I'm just going to have to switch salons entirely. Bummer, I really liked this place. read more

I had very high hopes for Medusa. It's super cute, great vibe - thought it would be a good place to get a funky-ish haircut. I guess my issue is that I took advantage of the $20 haircut done by an "apprentice stylist". My appointment was for 11am, so I got there about 10:50 and started waiting. At about 11:20, the "receptionist" gave the stylist a call and was told that she was "running late" and would be there soon. She finally arrived at 11:40 and quickly washed my hair and cut an incredibly basic cut. She also told me while washing my hair that she was baking cookies and "forgot" she had an appointment until she was called by the receptionist and then had to walk from her apartment to the salon. This was a disappointing haircut, and a disappointing experience with the salon. Although this is mostly a review for the $20 haircut stylist, I do feel that by the salon allowing this type of behavior, it sheds a bad light on the entire place. Nobody (even the stylist) apologized for her being late, or said anything else to me the entire 40 minutes I was waiting. There are enough places in Park Slope that I don't need to deal with that again. read more

These people have no sense of aesthetics. They cut bangs for me which were so narrow they barely cleared my eyes. I haven't cried about a haircut since I was one and a half years old. So I conferred with my mother and sister, and they marched me back to have the cut improved. It was not much of an improvement. They are, however, aptly named. I think it is ridiculous to charge $73 for a haircut and not blow dry to make sure it looks good. I got there on time, but had to wait another 20 minutes. My hair doesn't look that great. In fact, if I don't put in product and blow dry it I have MOM HAIR. I wanted short piecey bangs, but instead my bangs looks like I a let a 5 year old cut them unless I straighten then (not just blow dry them straight). When I was getting my hair the bangs didn't look right but she just didn't seem that interested in solving the problem. I won't be going back. Mousey Brown is better. read more

I've gone twice now to Medusa to get my hair cut with Heather. Both times she has given me exactly the haircut I wanted and I've walked out feeling as though my money was well spent (without tip about $70). I've not yet had any problem getting an appointment on short notice. The salon is kind of funky (in a nice way, that is). It looks a bit like the boudoir of a 1960's starlet, but just a little worn around the edges. Its small, comfortable, and welcoming. They only take cash or checks, so be prepared. read more

Where do I begin? I've been looking like crazy for a hair salon that won't charge be close to $500 just to be a blonde. I started out with highlights that was done by my friend and then stopped because we weren't in touch anymore. So I went out and looked for a salon that would make me blonder and I liked my hair but it wasn't as light as I wanted. I wanted that barbie blonde. Finally I came across Medusa salon and I read the great reviews and I was sold! I gave them a try and they did not disappoint! Anyway, my stylist was Patrick and I really love how my hair came out. I wanted an Ashy/white blonde but it just came out the perfect blonde which is better than what I wanted because I'm probably not confident enough to rock the khaleese hair yet. Unfortunately, the second time I went for a touch up Patrick wasn't there. I got the chance to meet another great stylist, Brittany. She's the one who does my hair now and I hope she never leaves the salon because she's amazing and has great customer service. I was a loyal customer of Medusa Salon. Came in this weekend and payed $60 with a tip for a blow out. Walked home and 20 minutes later it looked like my hair air dried after a quick shower. I was very upset because I got this done before a special night out. It was extremely flat and had no body and it didn't look like I got my hair done at all. Called and spoke with someone once I got home and they said I could come back in 20 minutes but I didn't have the time to go there, get a "re-do" or touch up, and then come back and get ready before going out. As a curly-haired gal who prefers pixies and short hair, it can be a real pain in the butt to find a stylist who not only listens to what I want (no, I don't want a bob of any sort...no, I don't want highlights) and can actually do it (without a ton of razor work), but also someone who listens to the way I like my hair to be fixed. (Mari was the first stylist I've EVER worked with who didn't try to blow dry, straighten, and "volumize" my hair post-cut. I'd been cutting my own hair for a while, which was never a tricky task for me given a) dead-straight hair and b) a really boring "style" (basically, just let it do its thing and clean up the split ends once a year or so). Needless to say, not a salon regular. Without going into the psychology of why, I'd decided to go for something kind of different, like bangs, and a coworker recommended this Park Slope salon. I had an appointment with Mary, who was great, if a little disapproving initially of my idea ("your hairline's kind of low for bangs"). I told her I would absolutely trust her judgment on what would work, since I'm no authority, but after a few minutes of hair-analysis she'd thought of a slightly different approach that would look good on me. I'd once had someone try to give me "swoopy" bangs despite my cautioning that my hair, being so straight, doesn't ever "swoop" -- it all just falls in my face (which that haircut promptly did -- I relied on barrettes and headbands for weeks afterwards). I told this to Mary, and I give her a LOT of credit for being possibly the first person to ever believe me. Anyway, long story short, I walked out with a great haircut, and will be back soon -- Mary said the bang trims are just $10, and free if I go back to her. read more
