    A spread of conservas

This was our first meal in Portugal and it set a wonderful precedence. This restaurant is located in the heart of Alfama close to where we were staying and had fantastic opportunities for people watching. We arrived at an odd hour for a meal because we had just landed. Still, our server was very nice and helpful with questions we had about the menu. Our platter of conservas (canned fish) was served beautifully. Beyond that, it was absolutely delicious. The sides served with the fish went amazingly well with it and we couldn't help but eat it all so quickly. A couple of days later, we wanted to eat somewhere nearby that was rated pretty well. We followed our phone navigation... And ended up at this place! We laughed but didn't mind. Service was just as fantastic. We had a plate of Portuguese meats and cheeses. One of the cheeses was particularly stinky, but the rest of it was amazing. Overall, highly recommend this place and if we find ourselves in these parts again, we'd pay it another visit.

Came here a couple of times as it was right next to our apartment. The house red wine was lovely, as was the tapas. Also tried the fish sharing boars which was delicious. Service was friendly and very reasonable prices. Sat outside on one evening and could enjoy the fado singers in the bar next door.

What makes it special is watching the pastries being handmade right in front of you, which adds a level of freshness and craftsmanship that you can actually taste. The service was super fast and friendly. The pastel de nata came out perfectly, with that delicate flaky crust and warm custard that just hits differently when you know it was made moments ago. The espresso was equally impressive, rich and smooth, and the two together make for a simple but near perfect combination. If you are in the area, this is an easy and very satisfying stop.

Oh no. Am I the only one who doesn't like the pastel de nata custard tarts this restaurant is so…read morefamous for? The crust was super flaky and the tart was nice and warm out of the oven, but I didn't like the flavor of the custard. I did forget to add cinnamon to the top, but I don't think it would have helped me personally. The woman who stood next to me at the counter had a nearly orgasmic experience next to me, so it's obvious that my taste buds are apparently off. I loved the patience of the server, who got confused when I told her I wanted to eat in but wanted to take water to go. Note to self...Portuguese folks want to have their "to go" as "takeaway." What I also didn't know was that there was no place to sit!! I scooted down the counter just like all the other folks to watch the bakers prep the next gozillion pastries for the day. That was interesting. Then, I didn't know how to bus my dishes. I just left them on the counter like all the other folks and went away. I wouldn't skip going because of my personal taste buds, though. Enjoy it for yourself and let me know if you have a different opinion than I did!
