Worse food in a long time!!! I ordered delivery from Medium Rare Connecticut, and I live just five minutes away. Despite the short distance, everything arrived cold. The concept makes for a nice dinner outing. The food was delicious, especially the sauce, and I was pleasantly surprised by the bread and salad as well. The ice cream sundae was a fun way to end the meal. However, the service fell far short of expectations. Although we had a reservation, when we arrived they didn't have a table ready and almost seated us outside. Luckily we were able to get a table inside, but it was located right by the bathroom with a lot of foot traffic. The staff seemed rushed to turn tables, which made the experience feel hurried throughout. For example, the steak arrived before we had finished even half of the salad, and our second serving was placed on the plates without asking if we wanted more. Additionally, the second steak serving was cooked rare instead of medium, but it felt so rushed, we didn't bother correcting it. I asked for a few extra fries but was told they would charge more which was disappointing. I thought that the fries at least could be unlimited but they're pretty strict with the two servings. Throughout the night the staff rarely recognizes you unless to push you to the next part of the menu. Reservations are definitely recommended for weekend nights. Medium Rare - A perfect place to have a quiet birthday. My fiancé decided to take me to Medium Rare on my birthday after hearing about it on TikTok. This place is best known as a DC staple restaurant and we can see why. We went to the Cleveland park location (Connecticut ave) due to its convenience to the red line Metro. The building is on the corner with a bright sign. The neighborhood was nice and quiet. Parking can be difficult for those who may drive here as there's no lot or deck to park in. You can park on Connecticut Avenue or Orway St NW. The maitre D was a very professional young man who greeted you at the door immediately. Upon finding our reservation. We were escorted to our table outside and welcomed once more. This night we dined outside on the patio which still provided us with a quiet and intimate experience. My only issue is that the metro vents are right below and you can hear the when the trains are coming and going, but it's not loud at all. We loved the fact that they use butcher paper over the table clothe, the server was able to write who got which glass of wine. Although some may see this as tacky, I found it quirky and smart. Our server greeted us and asked us if this was our first time. She was able to explain how the courses would come out and ask about any allergies we may have. I have a blue cheese allergy and I appreciate when restaurants ask about food allergies, it ensure me that the chef and staff are trained to handle picky eaters. Once the menu was explained, we were asked about drinks I chose the Sauvignon Blanc while my partner chose the Pinot Grigio. The stemware was a bit chunky and doesn't fit the rest of their barware. The maitre D bought out our glasses, and got them confused. This is understandable since we both ordered white wine, but we can tell they were wrong due to the color difference. Soon the meal started with the first course of bread and butter. The bread had a fresh taste to it and was light and flakey. On the menu it described as "Artisan rustic" which is the perfect description. The taste was wonderful and with unsalted butter, it came together in harmony. Second course came out which was a mixed green salad with tomatoes. The salad was dressed a light vinaigrette and the option to have fresh pepper grinded on top. The salad is the right portion and the pepper and the vinaigrette play well with the slight bitterness of the greens. The tomatoe...take it or leave it honestly. The server then come back to ask about the cook of our steaks. We both chose medium as our default. About 5 minutes after finishing our salads, the final course is here, the presentation of the of the steak and fries leaves you waiting in anticipation. The fries smell wonderful with intermittent wafts of the sauce. The steak is slice thinly which was a surprise since this is a steak restaurant, but in reality, it's cut perfect for the type of steak. This culotte steak deserves a round of applause by itself. The steak is tender and perfect cooked with grill marks. Taking a bite of the steak, the sauce and a fry altogether is nothing short of pure bliss, the steak practically melts while the sauce provides a deep meaty richness, the fries are perfectly cooked and seasoned with salt. The crispiness gives you the texture and crunch that the plate needs. The sauce has a silk mouth feel that can only be described as a masterpiece. After the first plate our server asked about another round. YES! This is part of the meal! The server brings out a grill pan with another serving of steak and fries and a jar full of sauce with a ladle!! My only gripe would be to bring the sauce and ladle out with the first course. The sauce is seriously addictive. It's clear there's alot of umami components in it and it plays well the food overall. Thy also have a vegan/vegetarian option; a grilled portobello mushroom with a fire roasted red pepper sauce. After all of that, they show us a desert menu. I decided to get the sundae, something you don't see often on menus. Since it was my birthday the sundae came out with a sparkler in it and the maitre D and server both wishing me a happy birthday. While the idea was enticing, I was incredibly disappointed by the lack of freshness and temperature in all the dishes. Although Medium Rare had a total of 9 items on the menu for brunch, the execution was subpar for almost everything we ordered. This would have been a mediocre meal but the hair in our Benedict sealed the 2 star experience. There were still tables available indoors at 12PM but I recommend making a reservation with larger groups if outdoors is preferred. The $31.95 brunch included bottomless Bloody Mary's, Screwdrivers, coffee, sodas, and fresh orange juice, rustic bread, one appetizer and one round of steak or sausage entrees. Notably hot teas weren't included and had to be purchased additionally. However the $28.95 dinner menu could be selected instead where the appetizer and drinks would be replaced by a mixed green salad and two rounds of the culotte steak and hand cut fries. Personally I found the appetizers to be lackluster so I preferred the dinner menu as I don't drink much. =STARTERS= Came out very fast and our server was great at refilling our drinks and bringing new carafes for us to share at the table. *Mimosa: very orange juice forward with the slightest hint of champagne. The fresh orange juice had greater vibrancy and considering the mimosa didn't leave anyone buzzed, it was the better alternative. *Yogurt Parfait with Dried Fruit and Granola: came out warm and tasted store bought. The granola and fruit were mushy and the concoction had an oatmeal texture. The yogurt should have been chilled and in house granola would have given some much needed crunch and sweetness. *Farm Fresh Fruit Salad: very hard to believe as the fruit tasted syrupy. The fruit salad shared the same warm temperature and squishy texture as the parfait. Might as well just get the vitamin C from the fresh orange juice. *Mixed Green Salad: incredibly limp and warm. I couldn't finish the salad as the greens were wilted and tasteless. The floppy base failed to bring any freshness and I was disappointed in all the starters. *Rustic Bread: quickly arrived when we were seated and came with butter. The bread was warm with a great crust. It paired well with the butter and was the only dish that felt made to order. =ENTREES= Took about 20 minutes to arrive. Highly recommend putting in the second round of steak with the server prior to finishing the first plate to avoid waiting. *Steak Frites: for the name medium rare, I'm disappointed in how my steak leaned rare instead. The portion was rather small, hence my preference for the two rounds with dinner instead. The steak ran warm instead of hot, although second portion was directly plated from the resting tray so the fries were crispier. The rest of the frites were slightly crispy but tasted very oily. The secret sauce was a peppery gravy similar to that of beef stroganoff. While the steak was seasoned well, I enjoyed the moisture and pepper from the sauce. *Medium Rare's Famous Benedict: beautifully poached eggs atop of tender yet salty steak and Portobello mushroom hash. The French bread base was hard and chewy and I would have preferred a more traditional English muffin. While the hash was tender, I would withhold some of the seasoning as the steak and mushroom contributed enough salt and umami flavor. This is also the dish where we found an infamous hair incorporated into the hash. *Steak and Eggs: had the choice between scrambled or poached eggs were I selected the latter. Once again the "perfect" poached eggs were nicely runny. This dish shared the same uncooked and lukewarm qualities as the steak frites although the eggs were a positive addition. If I wasn't up to eating two rounds of steak, this would be my preferred entree. Our server was stellar and fast to fix our hairy Benedict. The order was expeditated so my friend didn't have to sit with her empty plate for long although I wished she got compensated with either some hot tea or dessert. Overall Medium Rare offered a fun brunch experience but the food fell flat on many fronts. The steak wasn't the worst I've had in DC nor was it the most expensive but lack of freshness from the appetizers and heat from the entrees made Medium Rare pale in comparison to other restaurants. Who doesn't?! The concept is so simple--Steak Frites Prix Fixe--and a few other items on the menu such as dessert and of course beer, wine and cocktails, and that's it. The prix fixe includes great, crusty bread, a green salad and for the main course, French fries and Culotte Steak cooked to your specification. All for the price of $25.99. I ordered my steak after its eponymous restaurant name. But if you don't like Medium Rare steak, by all means order however you'd like. My sisters ordered medium cooked steak for their kids. The steak had a little chew but it was well seasoned and came with a delicious brown sauce . That brown sauce was so good that I had to dip my fries in that sauce. I'm sure it's made out of pan drippings deglazed with heavy cream. The one thing to know is that they serve you a plate of steak frites twice. I didn't know that until I was halfway through my 1st plate. I was so happy when my sister told me. Who wouldn't?! We didn't have dessert since the kids wanted to get Cold Stone ice cream across the street from the restaurant. But I'd be interested in ordering dessert next time. There will definitely be a next time. :) We ate indoors but they have a nice sized outdoor area. Service was great. You can make a reservation via OpenTable. Parking is pretty tough in the area given the number of restaurants and other businesses on this street, so give yourself plenty of time to find parking if you are have a reservation.
