Here's a different concept... set menu with pre-fix dinner price ... warm bread, mixed salad along with steak and fries... that's it, no extensive menu options... right to the point. There's a bar to order wines, draft beer, cocktails. What surprised us the most is that you get 2 portions of the main dish of steak & fries. The owner's concept is simple and thoughtful.... rather than serving one big dish and letting the food get cold, you get a second helping of the food. We had to box ours to bring it home. We had a small hiccup with the salad .... it didn't look fresh but once we said something, the issue was taken care of and we got fresh salad. Although we did not try, desserts are available. The lights are dimmed making it for a quiet pleasant experience. The restroom was a bit intimidating at first because I wasn't expecting to hear a voice from the speakers as if someone was taking to me. Medium rare also offers weekend brunches from 9a to 3p with bottomless brunch cocktails. I love brunches so I may have to give it a go one of these weekends. A surprise unique finding we came across.

I came here with my sister because we wanted steak and what better place to get steak than somewhere that specializes in it. The first to come out was vread and butter but the bread was very hard and seemed stale and the butter had a really weird taste to it, kind of like tap water. The next to come out was a salad and I am not a big fan of salad and this salad was not that great. The dressing didnt shine through and it just tasted like I was chewing on grass. I came here with high expectations of the steak but I can confidently say that my expectations were not met in the slightest. Our first plates that came out were not good at all. The steak was terrible. It was super thin and when I chewed it the steak turned into like a sand texture. We called the server over and told her about it and she apologized and gave us a refire of our steaks right away. The second one to come out was better than the first but still not great, especially for someplace that specializes in steak. I asked what cut of steak they use and they use coulotte steak. Its not a bad choice but they didnt prepare it well. The fires were just fries, nothing special. They did come out with a second serving of steak and fries which was nice and very appreciated. The service was great though. Our server was quick to help us and very attentive to us. The manager came and apologized to us as well for the steaks not being to our liking. The feel of the restaurant is always very high end and very beautiful. Inside looked really nice and fancy. Parking was a little difficult to find though. Altogether my experience here wasnt that great but the service definitely saved them from a 1 star review. I wont ever come here again though because there are way better places I can get a steak that meet my expectations.

3 Course Prefix Steak Frites Meal with margarita

We went for Valentine's Day and in part, my birthday! This was my first time there and everything was exquisite! From the three course meal of bread, salad, and steak frites to key lime pie for dessert, everything was so fresh! Our waitress did a great job as well! The restaurant was a bit noisy but that's to be expected for Valentine's Day; but the ambiance was pretty!

Summary: Tasty food, bad ambiance, confusing experience. Would give 2.5 if half stars were an option. It was hard to hear anything so we were confused most of the meal about what we had been offered/what was happening, but the food was good. Tried to give feed-back on our way out and felt brushed off by the front desk which also didn't help, details below- Ambience: clean and bright, but as the space is basically one large open room, with an open bar area in the middle, the acoustics are rough. 80s hits were blasting the entire meal; not complaining about this personal taste wise, but was a little confusing to have Flock of Seagulls turned up so loud that we were kind of shouting to each other across our small table. Could barely hear waiters/waitresses when they would stop by. The main concern with the ambience is the bathroom soundtrack. Instead of music it's a "French Vocabulary" track. If you've been to La Madeline or remember Macaroni Grill back in the day, it's not unusual to pipe in basic vocabulary in French (or Italian for MG) for common phrases for ambience- 'my name is,' 'hello how are you,' 'let's go to the park,' etc. Also they alternate between male and female speakers. The soundtrack was one male voice and felt Predatory. QUOTE: "I have a hot tub in my home." "Do you have a boyfriend?" "Where do you live?" "Can I have your number?" "You have beautiful hands." "I want to steal your heart." "You take my breath away." "My name is Gerard." "Do you mind if I stare at you a bit longer?" It's unnerving at the very least, as a woman, to hear a male voice trying to get you back to his house while you are just trying to use the bathroom. By the end of the meal each of the women in our group used the bathroom and each came back feeling uncomfortable. We tried to tell this to the man at the front desk and he did not seem to take it very seriously, offering that it was the owner's decision and all the locations have this, but that doesn't suddenly make it ok. If you insist on having a French vocabulary tape playing in the bathrooms why can't it be normal phrases and not sound like a human trafficker? Menu: The idea of a pre-set menu with nothing to choose between (unless it's vegetarian instead of steak) sounds simple. We were asked if it was our first time and said yes, but no explanation was given, so I'm not sure what the point of the question was. We didn't know they give you two servings of the steak and fries. There was one basket of bread (for the table), one plate of salad (per person), and two servings of the entree plate (per person) which was a surprise. It makes the meal feel like a better value at about $32 per person. Drinks are separate. We couldn't understand the "mushroom side" offered to us as it was unclear if it was a part of the meal or not, so that was a $11 surprise because only 1 of the 4 of us said 'yes' to trying it. If you are in the mood for steak frites, this should scratch that itch for you with the double serving! Parking/location: Medium Rare Columbia is located in new Merriweather District shopping center. Bad luck for us tonight as police were not doing traffic control and concert go-ers took the entirety of the surface parking (of which there are at least 4 lots) by the restaurants, including parking in the lanes (not spots) in the lots blocking traffic flow. We used the parking garage which ironically had plenty of space. Took 20 minutes to park. Consider if there is a concert going on when you go.

Sure hope you like meat... it's not an unlimited serving and honestly I thought I'd be able to go through more than two servings but I did get full. There was a bit of inconsistency between the first serving of meat and the brown gravy went really well with the fries but felt too much on the meat. We also had the mushroom side order with red pepper sauce and on my second serving of meat found myself slathering my steak on the roasted red pepper sauce for the mushroom. The service was really nice. I feel bad to say this but it kinda felt like the Raising Cane of sliced steak... I feel if you're going to limit your selection (in this situation, there really isn't a choice aside from how you want your steak done) that main item should be the best or atleast consistent in flavor. Overall it was a good experience but I can't see a reason why I'd want to come back...

the restaurant was super empty for brunch which wasnt bad cause we had a party pf 4+. The service wasnt bad but everyones food was SUPER SALTY like it felt like it was the only seasoning they used. Probably go back for their dinner menu..

The server was great! She was very accommodating to the boys! The menu is limited and the cut of steak was average at best. The flavor was off the charts. It would be a crime to put ketchup on the fries! The special sauce was SPECIAL! The vibe was grown and sexy cool (even with the kids there)!

A pretty good bang for your buck. Not a super fancy restaurant but if you're looking for a simple and fresh meal, then this is your place. The pre-fixed menu keeps things very simple. The dessert Sunday was big enough to share for the table.

This time i didn't enjoyed like first time. But it's still ok. The meat was different than first time. It was thinner and sauce also a less tasty. But still it was ok. They make the plate 2 times. When you finish the first palte they bring more meat and fries. Ooo, yes fries and bread was perfect They make their own bread which is really good! Butter and bread is perfect! And the menu is 30 usd for per person.

Delicious steak and fries! Which is good because that's all they do. The gravy was not too heavy and paired well. I got the blackberry sangria and it was so good as well, perfect sweetness level and not strong tasting. Service was kind of slow, but they were pretty attentive when around. I liked this location because it looks small from the outside but was much larger inside especially with the floor to ceiling windows.

    Yes, they do have ketchup

The vibe was pleasant but had the makings to be rowdy on a weekend or happy hour. We started with the crab dip which was super legit. More of a queso texture, this dip is served with tortilla chips and bread. Very tasty. I had the fish tacos which come with fries. The tacos had the right amount of fillings and spice. The fish had all the smoky seasonings of being grilled. An excellent dish. My bride had the French Toast as it was brunch and what I sampled was definitely approved. Our daughter had the fish which was light and flakey. It was seasoned less than the fish in the tacos but equally delish. We finished it off by share the crème brûlée which was perfection. Their selection of steaks and seafood was rather impressive but was a bit too expensive for my blood. However, if you truly wish to celebrate somewhere, their selection likely cannot be beat. Go up one level in the parking garage where there's space for Grillmarx and enter the entrance on that level.

We made a last-minute decision to try for some of the nightly jazz (except Monday) at 18th & 21st on a Friday evening (Oct 2025), hip-ly named for the prohibition amendment and repeal :-) There's a free parking garage right across from the entrance of the building they share with a sister restaurant, Cured. We arrived in the bright seasonally-decorated welcoming lobby about 7:50pm. We ought to have made reservations, but in under 10min, the reception staff took us to the more intimate room towards the back where we were seated at at the bar, which is really what we wanted. When we arrived, the 6pm jazz band had just gone on break, so we felt free to chat with friendly regulars and with the bar staff. They have a changing list of ten craft beers from $6 to $21, plus one $6 non-alcoholic brew. Five of the $14-$35 per-glass vintage wines from their list of 17 are preserved with the "corovin" system that keeps air out, so they are never "corked". We focussed on their list of 11 crafted $13-$22 cocktails plus 5 non-alcoholic ones, all made with quality ingredients, each naming the staff member(s) (and guests) who formulated the recipe! We found Alex's $16 Fernetinez sublimely sweet: of bitter fernet amaro, Frederick-based locally-sourced award-winning McClintock One Last Time gin (exclusive for 18th&21st), smooth Luxardo liqueur, and a sweet vermouth. We loved the aroma and flavor of the classic Smoked Old Fashioned of bourbon from Kentucky's 10th-oldest distillery, Green River, moved to a mild well-rounded sweetness by brown sugar simple syrup, smoked in front of me by Mike (if i remember), with added richness from smoky bitters. They have a creative menu of $30 to $65 entrees, plus salads, small plates, apps, and sides, and they have a changing menu of small plates. We really hadn't planned on eating, but we couldn't resist. The $17 duck bao buns had thin tender filets with a sweet lightly-salty apricot-soy glaze and a tangy crunchy pickled cucumber slaw on a soft folded yeasted slightly-sweet white-flour bun. The $12 pair of fried fresh-tasting oysters were sweet and juicy with a light-flavored crunchy crust. They were so yummy, and easy to enjoy with our cocktails. Rodney Kelly's jazz band was excellent, playing with spirit, joking with each other and the audience, even staging a song or two with a skilled member of the restaurant staff. Afterwards we had brief moments with some of the band members, like an intimate jazz club. Later in the evening, i also had a Turkish Sunset, a Manhattan-variation created in a collaboration among the staff and a guest (Well-done Ozzie!). I love Elijah Craig, and wanted to try their dry toasted rye, with housemade allspice dram syrup, Small Hands grenadine, and bitters. By now, i felt very much at home with the staff, and when i learned that one of them had helped formulate this beverage, i confided that its amazing complexity was, for me, just a touch too dry. Alex (if i remember) considered the ingredients and the target flavors, and added just a touch of a sweet lemony liqueur, perfectly complimenting the recipe's flavors! Real-time crafting goes above and beyond, Thank you! (And when they next update the menu, maybe they'll have a custom option named for me :-)
