We went to MR before a concert. I was surprised to see it basically empty and now I see why. The menu is set and the food itself is ok for the price ($30 per person for a set menu). Our main server was decent however my interaction with other employees was strange. We were greeted by an employee who laughed and whispered something like "see, I told you," when we checked in for our reservation. We also were never given a cocktail menu even tho we had been given one during a previous visit. After we asked for a cocktail menu, the server just said he'd tell us what was on it and proceeded to rattled off a list of drinks. We got a pitcher of sangria not knowing the price. Compared to pitchers elsewhere, the price was outrageous (once we got the bill). The prices of the other cocktails my fellow diners ordered were also absolutely outrageous but we didn't find out until the bill came. The server kept telling us how high drink prices are at Merriweather so we may as well drink while we were there. In the end, our drinks at MR were far MORE expensive than if we'd just gotten them at the concert. I really wonder if the server was charging us inflated prices. The other experience I was put off by was when I went to use the restroom. I asked an employee where the bathroom was and he said , "you can't use the bathroom here, it's not a public restroom." I then pointed to where we were sitting (and had been sitting for the last 45 min.) and he just seemed stunned. No apology. Just an inflated bill and a my fellow diners leaving with a tainted view of this place. We will not return. read more

5 Stars PLUS for their food! The chef at Medium rare knows how to cook. We were excited that Medium Rare opened up a location in Columbia and visited for brunch. We ordered their signature steak and frites as well as their french toast. They offered bottomless mimosa/screwdriver/bloody mary for just $~40/pp. Steak frites was SO YUMMY! Service was lacking tbh. They forgot to give us our coffee, servers took forever to come, butter knives were missing and they gave us an unwashed napkin....? gross. I won't ding them based on this because I understand it will take some time to work out these issues in the beginning. I still LOVED the food and will be coming back again. Simple idea- I hope this place survives the stiff competition in the merriweather district. We came during a concert at the merriweather post pavilion and took us 30 min to get through traffic and locate the free parking structure Nextdoor! Make sure to check the concert schedule and plan accordingly. Bread and butter- perfection- like I felt like I was in Paris Salad- dressing delicious but a few leaves of super wilted-almost slimy greens- can not happen when there is only one choice of appetizer! Steak was pretty great and the fries also crunchy and had good potato flavor- loved that it came with seconds that were hot and fresh! Glad they finally opened one close by so no need to drive 1+ hr to eat Medium Rare anytime. This was our first time dining at this location and our first impression was pretty good. We tasted the consistency in the quality and flavor of the steak and fries. The addition portobello mushroom dish was a great touch. However, the dressing for the salad was very off. None of us finished it, as a matter fact, we barely touch it. Like to suggest chef change up the dressing little bit. Front wait staff was friendly. The food was fine, but the hype leading up to this set my expectations too high. The restaurant is crammed with tables. If someone stands up, you cannot pass. The "steak", is Salisbury steak and Sysco fries. I am fortunate enough that I can afford to have a meal out every month or so, but for the $120+ for a couple, I could have had two GREAT bottles of wine, and the best Chinese food in the Columbia area without leaving my couch. 3 stars because the wine was fine, the food was fine...just fine. Waiter forgot to tell our the preset menu steak comes in 2 waves so when we got our first set, me and my wife were just looking at each other like what's with this tiny portion. So we filled ourselves with fries only for the waiter to come and dump more steak down. 2. The steak was very cheap. Honestly tasted like a cheap cut of meat that was seasoned with way too much black pepper. Nothing tender about it and I ordered medium (the pink level was fine). The menu price is such a great value; I couldn't believe we got 2 rounds of steak & fries. Everything was cooked exactly as requested, and I had plenty of leftovers to enjoy the next day. First time here because we didn't want to go over to mall and give up the great Friday night parking space. Walked around and everywhere else had a 30 minute wait. We were about to give up but walked past the ice cream space to see what this place was. A restaurant with no wait!! We chalked it up as no one else saw it because it's on an odd corner. We figured out why when the waiter explained that there's only one entree - Steak and fries. Only fries - no other vegetable choices. Yes!!! That's our favorite meal. The steak was fantastic except the gravy. That was gross. Wish I had known to ask for it to be left off. I'm not a gravy fan and no it's not sauce. There's a difference. The salad was decent. Could have trimmed the brown edges off though. I'm the only one who noticed but I'm particular like that. Desserts were good - carrot cake, key lime pie (crust could be better and more lime taste) and huge layered chocolate cake. Music was a little too loud when we first arrived but seemed to go down by end of our meal. Not sure we'll be back soon. Not every one wants just steak every time even though it's our favorite. Met a friend for dinner and had some idea what to expect. The place was tidy, the staff were friendly, the cocktail I had while waiting for my friend was delicious. Our waiter was really good -- and probably broke a few hearts. For us, though, the main measure was service. He didn't disappoint. Attentive and reasonably proactive, and funny. I like a bit of banter so long as basic competence is established. The limited menu means I expected they'd do what they promised -- and they did. Bread was delicious. Salad was, as requested, lightly dressed. Fries were perfectly cooked and the steak itself was pretty good. In future I'll ask for the gravy on the side, because while I enjoyed it, I thought it kind of overpowered the meat. The steak itself was presented well and cooked the way I requested, but it would have benefitted from being a thicker cut. The portion seemed small until I remembered reading they bring a second round later. That was similarly good, and I had no room for dessert -- though I nearly caved and got the key lime pie, which our waiter promised was excellent. I believed him, but I was stuffed! Medium Rare is a French style set menu establishment, meaning you only have a single meal plan you can choose from (outside of side dishes and desserts), and your meal is inspired by French cuisine. But upon entering, you'll be treated to 90s and 00s music, a 24-hour diner decor, and a centralized bar whipping up drinks that are equally delicious and strong. The vibe is all over the place, and I like it. The set menu might be a turnoff for most patrons. If you intend to eat a full meal (as oppose to sides or desserts), you only have one option. Your set meal includes some standard, but tasty bread, a refreshing salad, and then a main course of steak and fries. The steak is coulotte style, which is a French method of cooking a thin sirloin steak and the sliced into strips just before serving. The fries are long, thin, and crispy. Both steak and fries are served with Medium Rare's "Secret Sauce" which is a thin, peppery gravy that could be bottled and sold on its own. After enjoying your steak and fries, you are served ANOTHER portion of steak and fries. So bring an appetite or expect another meal's worth of food for leftovers (which they'll happily box for you if you're rightfully full). Best part of this large meal is the price. At only $30, you'll get your money's worth and then some. If you come for their brunch menu, you'll get a similar set menu, but with some choices for your main course. It's $35 for brunch, but it comes with unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, so I think it's well worth the extra $5. Drinks are where you'll be breaking your wallet. A wine list, cocktail, and mocktail menu filled with delicious pairings for your steak will be hard to resist. I couldn't find the prices of the drinks until after I ordered, and they are closer in the $$$ range than I'd have wanted, BUT the drinks are expertly crafted. You get a lot of kick in your cup, but the alcohol is well balanced with the other mixins. First time here and I enjoyed it. It's not ur usual steak restaurant, I'd describe it more like a fast casual steak restaurant. Prix fixe and they only serve steak frits, so all u have to do is tell them how u want ur steak cooked. Easy-peasy. The salad came out first. The dressing was a light vinaigrette and I think they dusted a little sea salt over it for flavor. Light with great flavor is my total jam when it comes to salad. I approve! Next came the bread. It's baked in house. Chewy on the inside, but very hard crust. I mean u may have to bite the same spot 2 or 3 times to get the piece ur trying to bite. Very bland, but it's served with an ample amount of butter that's sprinkles with coarse salt, so that gave it good flavor. The main event was next...the steak frites! I try to watch my carbs and fried food intake, but the fries were so good I ate them all before even touching ny steak. They're very light salted and were the perfect ratio of crisp to tender. I dunno how they got them so right, but they were GOOD! The steak was cooked just like I asked. Medium, so it was juicy with a slightly pink center. It was tender enough to almost cut with the fork...almost, but not quite. Genius idea to use a less popular, inexpensive cut of steak and cook it so well. It was too much sauce for me, so I wiped a lot off. It was a great compliment to the steak and I ate it all. As I was waiting for the check, a server came by with seconds of the fries and steak, but I was too full. I got them packed to go and it was included. What a nice surprise! My waitress was OK, I had to wait for my water refill. Not the best, but not a lot required given the restaurant set up. The servers who brought out all the food were timed just right. They must have been paying close attention, cause just as I was finishing one thing, the next thing showed up at right on time. Overall aesthetic is decent. It was clean, but without many frills or bells and whistles. Just paper, buy not tables clothes, steel chairs, no padding. Like I said in the beginning, fast casual steak restaurant. Only, this one had a lil Parisian cafe kinda feel. Think if Sizzler married a Parisian Cafe, and they decided on 1 entree to serve. Yep, that's how I'd describe it. Sadly, I cannot recommend Medium Rare. We went on Labor Day and it was hardly packed, each server had about 3-4 tables. Service was terrible, full stop. We ordered drinks and they came after our salads were served and almost done. Then we had to ask for bread. Bread came out burnt. We ordered the steak medium, it came out well done. Chewy texture as well, just not a very high quality steak, which I suppose, for the price point was fine. Had to wait another 15 minutes for my steak to come out at the correct temp. Then we waited a half hour before anyone else came around and had to ask for seconds and more bread. Fries were good. Sauce for the steak was also good, tasted like a mushroom flavored gravy. Second serving of steak also came out overcooked as well but we were too tired to send it back and just ate it. Just FYI, not a very kid friendly place, they don't have a kids menu and they don't have kids cups. It's fine. They said that for kids, they could get 1 serving of steak for $5 less so $25. The meal would be familiar to anyone visiting France or Switzerland, and this compared favorably to the meal of the same I had in Geneva, Switzerland. The waitstaff was both helpful and attentive. The restaurant itself is comfortable, but as with many modern locales, far too loud (it hit 82 decibels while we were there). We had a great time at Medium Rare. This was our first time visiting. It was easy to make a reservation and we got seated right away. The restaurant is pretty classy and modern. The large windows are great for people watching but it's also disturbing to have people watch you eat. :) We really like the concept of a fixed menu. That is what drew us to Medium Rare. It was no fuss, no muss. The price was pretty reasonable for what we ate. We can't complain. Medium Rare's website was spot on. When the server came, all we had to tell her is how to prepare our steaks! Medium Rare had a nice alcohol list. They also had an interesting cocktail selection. My friend really enjoyed the raspberry margarita. The salad and bread arrived pretty quickly. The salad dressing was tasty. It was like a cross between Italian dressing and a vinaigrette. The steak and frites were delicious! Cooked as we ordered. The special sauce on the steak was also nice touch. Much better than any steak sauce. It also made for great frites sauce! The portion size was just perfect for me. We were totally surprised when one of the servers brought us more steak and frites! We thought he had the wrong table! :D My friend was all excited about more steak. Needless to say, we were both comfortably full by the end of dinner. Thankfully we went when there were no concerts at Merriweather so parking was good. I would suggest making reservations. It probably isn't necessary for an early dinner, but why take the chance. It's fine...not going to blow your mind but gets the job done. If you go in thinking it's a more upscale Texas Roadhouse (and you ONLY crave steak frites), you will leave satisfied. The bread is definitely good, the salad is perfectly fine, and the thinly-sliced steak is pretty good albeit slightly under-seasoned. The sauce they serve has some flavor but the slightly goopy texture/consistency on it needs work. The fries are great. The big draw is, obviously, the second serving of thinly-sliced steak and heap of fries. On my end, I'd trade that for more flavorful steak that's not already thin-sliced but that's not their game. If you want to a simple beef dinner with pleasing sides, then bingo. They're pretty upfront about that, so I doubt most folks will go in demanding tomahawk ribeyes or expertly charred wagyu. Stopped in for brunch on a Sunday. Surprisingly not too busy. I know what to expect coming to Medium Rare as the focus is on steak and fries. I've been to one other establishment in DC pre Covid and it was a good experience there as well. My only complaint would be my salad wasn't very green or colorful. Looked and tasted like it had been sitting a bit, which was confirmed a few moments later when the table next to us got their salads which were bright green with nice bright red tomatoes. Our fries were fried hard as if they were double fried and our steak wasn't served hot or even warm. Lukewarm at best. Our server was nice enough, but we felt a bit rushed towards the end, and weren't asked if we wanted anything else before the check was brought to the table. Restaurant is fairly new and very welcoming. Good background music and everyone spoke and was pleasant. These are important to me as a customer and very much appreciated. read more

Summary: ok food, bad ambiance, terrible experience I'm tempted to only give 1 Star for how poorly the staff responded to our concerns when we voiced them. The experience was confusing and the food was ok but the drinks were overpriced and the prices intentionally hidden until the end. Room noise was rough with any conversation drowned out by music that was playing WAY too loud to the point of just being unpleasant and frustrating. Service was abysmal and our waiter never came back to check on us, refill drinks, give us the bill, nothing. I had to grab another server just to get the check and then 5 minutes later our original waiter came back and asked if we'd like the check or dessert menu. The MOST DISTURBING part of the visit came at the end of the meal when each member of our group used the bathrooms. The choice to play French greetings and phrases with English translations is not a new concept. La Madeleine and other French inspired restaurants that do it well, with both female and male voices, and the phrases are respectful and casual. The issue with THIS restaurant's attempt is that the soundtrack used is unnerving and downright predatory in the phrases chosen. These are some of the things that were said: 1. "Where do you live?"..."Can I have your number" 2. "You have beautiful hands"..."I want to steal your heart" 3. "I have a hot tub in my home"..."Do you have a boyfriend?" 4. "You take my breath away"..."My name is Gerard" 5. "Do you mind if I stare at you a bit longer?" *ALL of this being said to women who are in a VERY vulnerable position- pants down, half naked and trying to go to the bathroom. We certainly don't want to hear "Where do you live? My name is Gerard. Can I stare at you longer" It was such an upsetting experience that as we left we brought it up to the manager. All he said was that "yeah, we've heard that before but the owner wants to create a French ambiance." We tried to push, asking him to relay to the owner that the phrases themselves were concerning and that the only French thing about the restaurant was their focus on only serving Steak frites (which is literally just steak and fries). Blasting 80's hits and playing predatory translations in the bathroom is far from a "French ambiance" and to have French vocabulary/translations is great but it matters what they're saying- why does it have to be so predatory? But ultimately he just brushed us off. As we left I was shaking and felt so upset by the experience that I was determined to write this review and warn any other patrons that don't wish to be subjected to that experience. read more

Let me start by saying it is good for what it is, and the price point for steak and frites is probably about right. I guess I had built it up in my head a little bit based on other reviews and what friends and family have said about the place. I would describe the interior of the restaurant as upscale casual. It was a little weird to sit down to a great looking place setting complete with wine glasses sitting on top of butcher paper. I get it, they write your simple order in crayon in the paper so everyone can keep track of it. I guess I was expecting more of a white table cloth type setting. I am also not such a big fan of the giant windows that everyone walking by can watch you eat. Next time, I will ask to sit on the other side of the restaurant. The main server was average at best for a place that literally only has one thing on the menu, and the wait staff only needs to know how you like your steak and what is your drink order, which by the way they write on the butcher paper, I expect them to remember the drink order with out having to remind them. Other than that, the expo team was good. Constantly refilling soda and water glasses. The steak was decent. The gravy makes the meal as the steak has a little bit of a burnt char to it. The steak was cooked perfectly inside. The clear highlight of the meal were the fries. Shoestring and piping hot! Didn't need ketchup or the gravy. They bring the second half of your steak to you and serve it table side from a hot skillet and plop it down in your plate. I would have preferred a new plate with the same presentation as the first, or asked us if we wanted the second portion to go. The drinks were really good as well. I had a Woodford reserve old fashioned which had a generous pour. Slightly sweet but spot on for what it was. The wife had the blackberry sangria. If you like sangria, you will love it. It was sweet and tart at the same time. The apple pie dessert was fantastic. Warm apple pie loaded with apples and a heavy cinnamon taste. Overall, it was a good experience. My expectations were greater than what the restaurant is, but I will definitely give this another chance now that I know what to expect. Maybe try the brunch menu next time as it looks pretty good. This is my first time here and I am in love! Thank you medium rare for coming to Columbia! I always pass your locations in dc but there's no parking there and now it's in my neighborhood! My bartender who served me water, since I don't drink, was so friendly! Her name is Kimberly so come see her on Thursdays ! The salad is soooooo good and I'm not sure what dressing they put on it but I was obsessed. The bread is delicious too, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Ooooo the steak is perfectly seasoned and the sauce that comes with it is finger licking good. I got my steak medium which is the only way to eat a steak. The fries are nice and thin like I like and I dipped them in the sexy brown sauce. They come with a pan to give you additional steak and fries, it's endless! Oooooo I will be back!!!! read more
