I'd also like to add that Mecum has a "Proxy" bid system where you enter your maximum bid amount.  That way you can bid and not have to be present.  I'm concerned that the owner of the car or even Mecum themselves, know that amount and can bid up to the amount while "Proxy" bid will automatically increase.  The owner gets a higher price and Mecum gets a higher fee since it's based on the sale amount. Maybe the Attorney General should look at? read more

Dana Mecum is a liar and a crook. I would give him no stars but that's not an option. We attended the Eddie Vannoy private collection auction. It took us two days to get to Jefferson North Carolina from our home. We were extremely excited for this auction and thought we might get some reasonable deals on Eddie's collection. Much to our dismay on the first day we notice Dana Mecum bidding on multiple items winning the bid on some items. How unethical is that to be bidding against your clients?. We are both gold bidders, and have been for some time smells pretty fishy doesn't it. My guess is it goes on all the time with Mecum Auction Company. Obviously Dana Mecum doesn't have to pay a percentage or does any of his Entourage when bidding against their clients. When I approached Dana and ask him why he was bidding against his customers he denied it. We watched him for the next several days bidding on Eddie Vannoy collection. We even had a conversation with one of the Auctioneer helpers they were bidding on items as well. Internet bidding seem to be a problem as well. Every time the in-house bidding got to a point where we thought the product would sell internet bidding raised the price. We've been to many auctions. In my mind and heart I feel this was a fixed auction from the very beginning. What a waste of f****** time. I have no regard for Dana Mecum or his Entourage. We will be removing ourselves from any further Mecum self served auctions. In other words I wish the Dana Mecum and his son would pull their lip over their head and swallow in between filling their faces with junk food.Dana is worth $45 million, why does he feel the need to get a deal bidding against his clientele.? read more

Bought a car tonight great looking inside & out. Per blue book got at a very good price only to drive out of the auction & transmission broke & front suspension. Wow what a scam. Do not buy from them. Not worth it! read more

I'm writing this letter to inform you of an extremely disappointing experience I had with your Dallas auction. I, much like other bidders, watched, waited and anticipated buying a car with nothing but confidence, as mecum has a stellar reputation. I received delivery of the car yesterday after several hiccups with the mecum financial department. I then drove the car and it immediately started smoking and leaking fluids. I took it to my local mechanic and the list of safety, mechanical and cosmetic issues is too long to even attempt to articulate in this email. The mechanics words were "I cannot let you drive this car out of here." I then hired a car service to drive me home. The vehicle is in his shop and will undergo a full inspection tomorrow morning. I purchased the car for $65,000 plus the 10% fees totaling over $71,000 for the car. The fact that you allow a vehicle to go through your auction in this condition for that price is shocking to say the least. I would greatly appreciate someone following up with me immediately. This has been the absolute worst car buying nightmare I have ever had and I purchase several vehicles a year. Please pass this along to the right people as I strongly feel I have been scammed out of a significant amount of money. read more

Where do I start? Bought a 2004 bmw at the Schaumburg, chicago auction. The company that co-signed it was just dumping it. Remember there is no test driving, be careful! As I drove it off the lot I knew the transmission was trashed. By the time I got it home 23 miles it was leaking oil all over my driveway. Mecum didn't follow state law and inform me in writing of the as is warranty in Illinois. Lucky I found out before the 15 period ran out. After notifying mecum they refunded all my money. Never once did anyone I dealt with from mecum offer an apology. If you bought at that auction contact the Illinois attorney general if you had problems. You might get your money back. read more

Mecum auctions and Seller KAO Auto Styling of Las Vegas provided written representation that "Estimated $110,000 invested in the build this one of a kind custom (2018) Jeep (with 200 miles on it)". I purchased this vehicle and have requested on numerous occasions of both parties that they provide a summary or "build sheet" to substantiate this claim and representation and that this number is accurate or even close. Based on evaluations by several others who are in the auto field, they have indicated that this figure must have been "pulled out of thin air" or inflated and clearly fraudulent, meant to be an arbitrary figure to mislead Buyers and inflate the sale price, and that the parties (Mecum and KAO) could "hide behind" their "as-is" claims. Such being the case, the intent of the Seller and Auctioneer was truly to defraud and seem to have no intent of providing information to support the information contained on marketing materials posted on the vehicle. The written advertising piece clearly presented false and misleading claims that are blatantly untrue and misrepresenting the facts. With firms in the business of building and selling vehicles such as these two entities, they should have business ethics, professional standards and value their reputations enough to accurately state the facts and not have to mislead and steal from consumers. They didn't disclose out of State title either which was a nightmare. Mecum clearly does a great job of promoting, producing a high energy auction environment that NBC Universal loves, but honesty and integrity of the business and protecting consumers seems to be non-existent. Indeed when Memcum's "conflict resolution person" was contacted, his response was "sue us"... Business and life should not be this way and honesty and integrity should be more important than deception and fraudulent business practices. read more

paid 82,500.00 for a convertible 57 Chevrolet plus 9900.00 in commission another 2300.00 shipping and 200.00 registration fee to by a car that was advertised as private collection. I did take video of talking to driver and him unloaded car he even admitted in video trunk didn't close and car had old gas in it which meant it sat for a long time contacted mecum was told had to talk to resolutions. And was told by them it was my fault I didn't have car inspected when it says in there disclaimers that you would get a one on one call walk around of the car and never did was told it was my fault I didn't make an appointment I didn't read nor was i told i needed to I spent almost 100k for a car that's needs to he completely redone. And the damage that was added by the Mecum transportation department not at least securing the trunk and letting it bounce open from texas to California didn't help eaither. If you purchase a car thru this auction without being there to check out the car read there disclaimers close really close. They will tell you everything is your fault they even ssid they have no knowledge of cars shape yet they take a misleading video advertising it how do you know nothing when you filmed car to advertise. Avoid purchasing a vehicle online or over the phone with this company. Mecum does not verify the claims of the consigner or note condition issues. I purchased a 1970 Mustang fastback that was one of the "stars" of the auction. It looked great in the photos and on tv but I guess that's why the cameras were always 15 feet away. The paint is cracking off and a section of paint on the fender is literally held on with scotch tape. There are rot holes in the fenders and trunk area and metal plates welded over the holes in the engine bay. The floors have metal plates riveted over the rotten floor pans. The emergency brake mechanism was sitting in the hole riddled trunk so the vehicle can't even pass an inspection. I messaged 3 different Mecum customer satisfaction employees about the issues and never got a response from any of them. Needless to say, my first experience buying a car through Mecum that I've wanted for 25 years has been a big disappointment. read more

Watch very carefully. This is no game for amateurs. Mecum does control one iota what the seller states. Seller says frame off restoration , don't count on it. Mecum certainly does not check and they help the seller rip you off with dishonest advertising and not enforcing any legitimate check of the sellers statements. read more

My car, a lifelong Father and Son restoration project, was stolen through a consignment dealer in Florida, Just Toys Classic Cars LLC. I've been working for 2 years to seek Justice. I eventually found out the car was sold multiple times through Mecum Auto Auctions. I called Mecum Auctions seeking information I needed to file a civil complaint against Just Toys Classic Cars LLC and NextGear Capital. I was told by management they would not provide the information I need. Fortunately, prior to talking to management, I was able to talk with a lady and I learned the ins and outs of using the Mecum website to find the information I needed. It's a sad scenario when management values business more than Justice. read more

Great Experience. My first Mecum auction was Kissimmee 2018. As a seller and a bidder, I am impressed. I've done business with several other auction companies, and have to say that Mecum has them all beat. The event was superb. All the staff that I came in contact with were friendly and helpful. It truly was a fun, entertaining, and profitable time. Professional from start to finish. Shout out to Jacquelin! Thank you. You've made a customer and a fan. read more

So first off Mecum is a very reputable, solid Collector Car Auction House. I have been buying/selling with these Auctions (Kruse, Mecum, BJ, RM) since the mid 90's. I recently Sold a 69 Camaro at the Kissimmee FL Auction. It went OK. Didn't get what I had hoped for but they worked on the Fee and I cut it loose. My choice. I easily could have let it roll off unsold. I have in the past. Most of the complaints you read below are from Buyers that did not perform their due diligence. These lots are Sold as is. No warranty or promises of any kind. If your a Buyer everything is your responsibility. Crawl underneath and look closely. Start it up. Let it idle to bring temp up. Function the Transmission (driving not permitted). Mecum let's you do this in the presence of a Lot Attendant. If it doesn't look, sound, or feel right, move on. You want a CarFax? Then get it yourself before the Auction. You want to hear it run and drive again? Then be in the Staging Lanes before Lot crosses the block. Owner is usually with Car then too. Ask questions! Oh, and the complaints about the Fees after the fact? SMH. You signed a contract when your Lot was listed. Wasn't a problem then. It costs big bucks to put on a 3500 Car Auction or any size Auction for that matter. For Free Auction Consultation PM me. Glad to help. read more

I paid for a saturday auction and got a saturday night. The amount of bidders from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM was very much fewer. I feel like they crammed 250 cars in from 10:30 to 7:30 with fewer bidders towards the end of the day.It was a total rip-off. Note that if you are going to be involved with mecum be prepared for an over booking. NEVER AGAIN !!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

Bought 3 cars at Mecum Auction in past 5 years. One only needed minor work (new plugs and coils). The other 2 have been a nightmare. One looked to be a high end restoration of a 1966 Corvette. Great paint, top and under carriage (all you can really check). The other was a very clean 56 Thunderbird. Both cars have been an endless string of repairs. The Corvette was a $90K car. I have had to rebuild the transmission, pull the rear end and change the bushings, almost lost a rear wheel because the safety pins were not installed, The steering column was not tightened and could have resulted in a catastrophic failure, the fan clutch was shot, the fan shroud is the wrong one resulting in overheating, the radio does not work, the fresh air vents were broken and had to be repaired as it was sucking heat, the seals around the windshield were done wrong so it leaks, it was out of alignment so it's eating the rear tires. The Thunderbird looks great. Got it for about $10K less than they usually go for which means that the real buyers at the Auction know something we don't. Fuel pump, water pump, brakes were bad, brake drums were warped, door hinges are bad. Moral of he story. If you buy a car at Auction it's buyer beware. There is a reason it's there. If you can't get it at a HUGE bargain don't buy it. You can assume your going spend another 10% on repairs. read more

Total rip-off- BUYER'S PREMIUMS- if you buy a car for say 30,000 you will have to pay a 10% buyers fee. So you have to give them a extra 3,000 just because you bought a car. plus you also still have to pay to bid on top of that. The Seller should have to be hit with the 10% fee NOT the buyer. Mecum auto auction is a joke. read more

First let me say do your homework. When arriving at the auction I thought I was at a rock concert. Loud and lights everywhere. I now understand that they want to keep you disoriented so you cant think clearly. And on top of it you cant test drive the car. And the fees are way out there. Commision is 10% to the seller and 10% to the buyer. So if you buy a car for 10,000 another 1000 gets added on. What really gets me is when the auction is over and you pick up your car the next day, good luck finding someone to help you. And now the part that really irritates me is waiting for the title. They send it to the local DMV so the state makes sure they get the right tax base. This part is never discussed on their website. 3 weeks later and still no titles so I cant drive the cars. I have seen so many negative reviews and they still make over 100 million a year! I was lucky and got one really nice car below market value and the other was over market value. Always wanted to attend and now I did will never go back and never buy another car from them. Buy a guest pass and go for the entertainment factor only. Don't get caught up in the frenzy of the auction. read more

Let me start by saying that I think Dana and his son try their best to run a good auction however after the sale is a nightmare and lying. First you are paying retail numbers for a car that you can't test drive and I now I understand that's why a lot of dealers use it as a dumping ground. Needless to say there are some really nice cars that run great too. I purchased a car and after 5 weeks with no title I called them and spoke to a lady (Heidi Regan) who gave me her card after Mecum made several false statements (SL300 and not a SL500, driver on ramp states 44,000 miles but had 104000) and said if there is a problem she said to call her. When I get her on the phone she said that she never spoke to me and she never gives out her card to anyone (Why have cards then?) and what do I want? Next I'm transferred to a gentleman who said that my title was delivered and that I rejected it. I asked what is the address that is on the envelope that was returned and he states 875 ______ and I tell him that all my Mecum paperwork has 975_____ which is my correct address and that's probably why I never got it. He said he did not understand why I would reject it, and I tell him three times that the person who rejected it is not me and that somebody in your office must have wrote down the wrong address. Then he said should I have that person fired and I said I would never ask for such a thing and that all I want is my title that you guarantee after sale. I asked if they could overnight it since we are six weeks after the auction and he said sure. Never sent overnight, another lie!!!! I purchased from Barrett Jackson there is great business model that they should try to adopt!!!!!! read more

I attended the recent Pomona auction as a seller and experienced a Mecum staff that was very helpful, pleasant and friendly. When purchasing my position and time from a salesperson named Lee, he was very pleasant to deal with and suggested I purchase a STAR entry on Saturday for an additional $500.00 to the normal $500.00 entry fee, The Additional STAR entry fee was to be a PRIME TIME for sales of 3;00 Saturday when there were the most buyers present and the busiest time of the auction ( I Agree ). All went well until Mecum slipped in numerous cars ahead of me and others who purchased there position early for that position,When I finally crossed the stage at roughly 5:20 and was given 1 minute across the block the crowd had diminished to 1/4 of its size at my given time of 3;00. I was extremely upset about the situation and was referred to a person that handles customer service (by phone) and after 5 phone calls he returned my call, telling me that's just the way it goes, Well maybe in your greedy world but not mine, I was sold a additional PRIME TIME Time slot and didn't receive it, I Accept paying your fee of $500.00 to be entered but paying $500.00 additional and watching more and more unscheduled cars being placed in front of me eating up the prime selling spot I paid for is unacceptable and you know it. Put the shoe on the other foot! I mentioned I was a repeat customer and the gentleman said " only twice ". how many times does a person have to get taken advantage of ???? My first experience at Monterey was free entry for spectators, after inviting my extended family and friends to this event it was $30.00 per person to enter, adding more salt to the wound. All in all I spent thousands on the trip in expencences and time off only to be kicked in the shins ? Dana, you were a small guy once that traveled with a car trailer I understand, and now in your private jet, please dont forget where you came from, Its people like me that built your empire, brick by brick ! Bottom Line---Don't pay extra for A STAR ENTRY It means nothing ! Sincerely , Chris Johnston read more

Interesting auction and car show combo. Nice way to observe the link between car type/condition and value. Downside is if you pay $30 to get in the door you have to stand for hours or sit on kid size metal bleachers...ouch. pay $100-200 and you get a folding chair. The outfit is very well organized and people are professionals. However the "music" and overall speaker system was so loud I had to leave. The audience can see items via large screen TV but smaller items aren't viewable because there is no backdrop and staffers crowd into the picture. Overall, I would go again read more

This is a open letter to Mr. Dana Mecum. I had two cars in your Anaheim auction last week, lot# S83 and Lot # S111. While i found all of your people very helpful during move in and during the days of the show I was extremely disappointed in the way I was treated after the sale of lot S111. Lot S83 had a $52,000 reserve but it only went to about $24K so i did not sell it. Lot# S111 a Peterson museum car had a reserve of $92,000. When the bidding hit $37,000. your men really pit on the pressure for me to pull the reserve which i did. I had been told verbally by both my consignment specialist and by the Auctioneer, matter of fact they had even stated a few times during the three days about the sellers fee going to 5% if the reserve was pulled. When i went down on Sat. to pick up lot#83 i asked your people if they had done what they said, and was told (NO) the sellers fee was still 10%. I could understand and even agree that if the car sold for anywhere near the reserve paying the 10% would be fair but as u can see my car never went past a $37,000 which was a steal. Matter of fact many were saying that it was the best buy of the 3 days. So to sum up my open letter I feel that Mecum should take the 5% sellers fee as I was promised. read more
