    Sur La Table Cooking Class

This was my first and last cooking class for Sur La Table. This experience was a gift from a friend…read moreso I felt obligated to stay. Overall, this had weird and unpleasant vibes. TERRIBLE INSTRUCTOR * Even after addressing that a majority of the class were new, the instructor kept speed-reading through steps. * When students asked her to repeat steps, she sounded inconvenienced. * When a student was slower than others, she would laugh or sigh loudly then talk about it with her assistants. * When the instructor asked students about the flavor and some didn't like it, she got offended. * At one point, the instructor was rushing steps and leaving some students behind, eyeing people down and being overtly impatient by going to other students that were fine on their own. * When talking about allergens in food, she kept dismissing people and insisting the dish needed it, which felt insensitive. * When people mentioned the room was too noisy and we couldn't hear instructions, she visibly looked annoyed. I'd recommend a headset and sound system for the room so everyone can hear instructions. FOOD TASTED MEDIOCRE * When a student mentioned that there wasn't a lot of flavor in the dish, she misunderstood this as "you didn't put enough (spiciness)". No, this is lacking other spices. It's bland. It's the same blandness as just salt on chicken. This is a dish I've made before and have had multiple times at authentic restaurants. Even without the (spiciness) element at said restaurants, this iteration was gross and bland. It felt modified for consumers that don't like Thai flavors. TERRIBLE SETUP * Near the end of the class, four pans on high heat were right next to each other on the burner. This meant that a group of people were cheek-to-cheek and elbow-to-elbow while cooking on high. It would have made more sense to have a heat plate at each station, or have the groups cut in half (or two stations' ingredients combined) to prevent crowding. * When cooking in the kitchen with a crowd of people, we were asked to put metal dishes next to machines that were taking up more than half of the counter, which made it more crowded. It felt disorganized. * The class was estimated to take 2-3 hours and it only took 1 hour since they kept rushing us. It was already a big red flag when the instructor said that Trader Joe's food is so flavorful... but her pretentious and condescending attitude made the class very unpleasant. I wouldn't recommend this if you're new to cooking and or trying to learn a new recipe. There are more friendly chefs and instructors out there.

We had a great time at Taz's cooking class learning to make Korean food! I was looking for a fun date night and stumbled upon Taz's cooking classes, which all seem to focus on different Asian themes. Mark H. and I have tried repeatedly to cook Thai and Indian curries without any success, so I signed us up for the Korean BBQ night. Little did I know that we would be cooking a Korean BBQ FEAST. We cooked for about 3 hours. Each recipe independently seemed manageable, but who eats a single item at a Korean BBQ? My favorite dishes ended up being the Korean potato salad and, of course, the meat. At the end, we sat together family-style and devoured massive quantities of delicious food that we'd all cooked together. Looking back on the night, there were so many recipes and tips and tricks that there's no way I can keep it all straight. Luckily Taz sent us home with a mini cook book of the recipes we had created! One of the biggest pluses of his course is that he focuses on the ingredients and where to find them - turns out our curries probably weren't going so well since we were getting all our ingredients at Fry's or Safeway. 10/10 will go back again for another night. Can't wait to learn how to cook a good Thai dish!

We had Covid tests prior to the class, Taz purchased all the necessary ingredients, he arrived on time with color printed recipe instructions for us to keep, and he expertly showed us the ropes. We had great conversation throughout the class, he graciously shared the culinary knowledge he's acquired through his world travels, and we enjoyed an absolutely delicious meal while Taz washed the dishes. He's a down to earth amazing chef, he's professional and courteous, we'll schedule another class with him, and he has our highest endorsement and recommendation. A+++

Hello Everyone: I stumbled across Sweet Basil Gourmetware and Cooking School by accident…read more I went into the shopping center to pick up a To Go order from one of the restaurants, saw the sign, peeked into the glass and entered! This is a delightful store. If you know anyone who loves to cook and you are looking for the perfect gift, look no more. There is something for everyone in this store, including yourself! There is a also a section with pre-made sauces and other items such as starters you can select from which are a huge time saver and also a money saver since you are not buying ingredients in the grocery store for one dish. Plus, they have a cooking school. I have not taken any classes yet, since they are more of a team orientation with one demonstration day over lunch (and I prefer demonstration style), but for those of you who enjoy cooking classes with a hands-on style (rather than lecture and example), this may be the place for you. Their cooking school classes can be found on-line and have a wonderful variety each month, some with a theme for that month or up-coming holiday. I encourage you to check the location out, see what they sell, see if anything scheduled at the cooking school appeals to you, and look over the food section with items ready to purchase and enjoy. The staff were all very friendly when I told them it was my first time in the store so they could walk me through their intended concept. Enjoy!
