I've come to this place maybe a dozen times over the past five years, every single time I walk in and I could be in the best mood ever and when I leave, I'm so damn angry. They are slow. Slow slow, slow, slow slow. When you have seven customers standing in the line, open another check. When you've got two lines with seven people in each line, open another check out. I've asked for help from employees, either get blank stares or completely opposite information of what I need. I have even been mocked for not knowing technical terms by their staff in electrical. I keep coming back and I don't know why. If you're only picking up one item, and have 30 minutes to stand in lines waiting for other people to get their crap together, then McLennans hardware is for you. We shop at McClendons occasionally as it is close to our house. Today I needed 5 small flood lights for our garage so I went there. I couldn't find the bulb I needed and couldn't find anyone to help so I walked back to the cashier area to ask for help. There was a big African American man standing there so I asked him how I could get some help. He just stared at me. I guess he thought I would just move on. I didn't. Finally he said " With what " in a sarcastic tone. I told him then walked back to the bulbs. He didn't respond to me at all. Luckily I received help from both a lady and a man who were awesome. I don't know who hired the security guard but he in no way should be communicating with the public. We definitely won't be going back to this store unless we don't have time to go to Lowe's or Home Depot. Wow read more

I've been a happy customer since 1997. Back then, folks said "If McLendon's doesn't have it, no one has it." While that may not literally be true 100% of the time, it's common for me to see "Online only, free shipping to store" at the "big box" competitor, but McLendon's has it in stock. Some items may be a little more expensive compared to the "big box", but if you compare the product, you'll see McLendon's is often better quality. read more

I visited the Canyon Road Store today to see if I could pick up a few annuals to plant. The store was pretty wiped out of annuals, and what they did have was pretty sad. Unwatered and a lot dead. I saw a giant pile of dead hanging fuchsias - why?? Nothing was watered. So many dead plants. It was so depressing I had to leave. I'll go to Watson's and spend more because it's worth it. Run of the mill hardware store. Have been going there pretty much because they are close. Not any more. They have cut keys for me several times. I bought some key fobs on line, and went to get them cut. Nope. "Our policy....blah blah blah"...No other options. I called another hardware store two miles further away. I explained that I bought car keys with electronic fobs on line, and could they cut them. "Yep. No guarantees, but we'll give it a go!". Now that's a store I can get behind. Came in for some wire, searched around for 20 minutes trying to find an employee who could help us cut the wire. Finally found someone who had returned to the service desk and asked if any of them could cut wire. One gentleman whom didn't pay us any attention and gave us the feeling we were being a nuisance called for wire assistance over his headphone system , we waited back by wire for 10 minutes and no one came, went back to the desk and waited for the associate that was there (who was helping another customer) he asked me if I needed assistance, I explained we needed wire cut, he said he would be right with us, we went back and waited another 10 minutes. While standing there a few employees walked by us and didn't offer any help or give us a chance to ask them for assistance. We ended up leaving without wire. read more

So i went in to buy a 8mm socket. The lady in tools was extremely rude! Snapping at me with a simple question on weather or not i could pay for the single item, she snidely looked and me and said NOPE! Slamming her hand on to the counter and then started tapping. So i went to the front register, checked out, cashier was very sweet but i still only give 2 stars and unfortunately do not think I'll be returning. I've been using these guys for all of my gardening needs, and I have to say that they are one of the best around. Love going here on the weekends to get things to keep my garden growing. I gave it 4 stars, because I really don't like it when people point in a direction to tell you where what you're looking for is next to. What are you looking for? Oh it's right over there by the gadgets, and gizmos, whozits, and whatzits, and the thingamabobs! That's pretty much how I feel. I love McLendon because it feels like a community owned hardware store (Which it kind of is). I also love the large assortment of snacks they have. There is a Maytag appliance store that has opened up within, which is also nice. I love the convenience of how close this store is to us. What I don't like is that McLendon is more expensive than most other chain hardware stores, which I understand the reason behind that. So usually if I need something small, I run to McLendon, if I need to buy something big or large amount, where I can save serious money, I go to the big box hardware chains. read more

If you want the cheapest prices, maybe go to Lowes. If you want people who can help you and get great quality go to McLendons! I hate going to Lowes and asking an 17 year old for help and they have to bring in 3 more people to collectively help you.. and that's just for making keys. McLendons has employees who know what they are talking about. The only downside is sometimes it can be real tough to get someone to help you. Since they are very thorough, they spend a lot of time with customers at times leaving some to wait for help, worth it though! I go here for the experience of the employees, and the great conversations I have with the old timers around the free coffee stand! I love coming here for supplies for all things for my home. If you are not concerned with customer service this is the place for you. I have visited this store several times in the past week and had poor customer service every visit however today was it for me. Had a weed eater serviced and went in today to pick it up only to be told you have to pick it up out back. Where is out back? While wondering around trying to find my weed eater I encounter a couple of associates asking them we're to find my weed eater and one said not sure and he other said oh you have to go back to this other area. 10 mins of wondering I finally found it. The associate that apparently worked on it was quick to point out my fault of running to much oil in the gas and the fact they had to replace the spark plug but couldn't be bothered to bring the weed eater to the same counter that I dropped it of. Additionally I asked what the warranty covered as it seems crazy that I was spending 50 bucks to have a weed eater fixed that would not start. He could not tell me! He also pointed out that I would have to top the tank off as they only put enough fuel in it to get it started! What happen to customer service? I'm a fairly recent homeowner and as any homeowner knows, you are gonna need to visit a hardware store. After being snubbed by a place that get's low and another that get their goods by the depot, someone said try McLendons. I have to admit that I was impressed with how nice most people were there. I had one guy get pissed that I put a product back in the wrong place (unprofessional, but understandable) and once average looking female, that ignored my request for help #getoveryourself. I overlooked is because you are always gonna have a bad apple and have been loyal to McLendons for the past year. I happened to be in Puyallup and decided to stop. This store looked nothing like the Renton location, so I had no idea where to look for what I needed. Someone asked me if I found what I needed and when I advised I was new to the store and had no idea where things were, he had walked me to the 4-5 items I was after. Not only that, he was happy to do it. The service was bananas, I don't know if I have ever shopped anywhere were people were more pleasant and eager to assist. My last experience at McLendon's was 3 years ago and very unpleasant, however we decided to give it another try today since we were in the area. The selection was sufficient for us to chose the things we needed and the prices were fair. As a pleasant surprise, we were asked if we needed help more than once and we actually got some great input from an employee that overheard our confusion about different fertilizers. Prices were not easy to find and some products were not stocked. A big improvement from last time and we will be back for more. read more

I used to work for this outfit. We, the old guys took pride in the service we gave our customers. Now that we are almost all gone, mostly do to new ownership that brought in awful benefits and lies, I am done with McLendons. The help is rude, inexperienced, and has not a clue as to handle anytging. Today I went in to purchase a shower mixing valve. No old time plumbers, so the new kid they hired didn't even know where they were, nor which one to use. Then over to electrical, and the same plumber was covering there.. He knew nothing about anything, so I bailed him out with three customers, before I finally found what I wanted. The bill on the way out..$76.85... Then I went out to my truck and got my boxed 17 flourescent tubes for recycle. The guff I got from the gray haired woman at the lumberyard desk was uncalled for.. And her repeated sassy attitude, while smacking her gum in my face was out of this world rude. I told her if I was Bill ( the current store mgr.), and I caught her attitude with me, I would have her upstairs in a heartbeat, doing the write up.. No. This is not your McLendons of old, people. If you have bought lumber at mclendons if you don't give you're cashier the exact scew # it will take forever. Also they don't have many lumber carts and frown on you pushing lumber through their store. I always go directly to the back tell the guy in lumber what I am buying he loads it , I pay for it. Walk to the back show home my receipt and leave!!!! Simple right?!!!! Not today! Drive to the back and get yelled at I can't park there. I say ok who is going to cart the lumber and load it than? I'm not. He gets an attitude and tells me to move my work van. I explain sir my van will be right back there in 3 min. Meanwhile I'm watching the truck in front of me load lumber without paying than leave his truck parked in the back as he walks to the front of the store pays for it than zcontinues to look at the stihl equipment in the store. Do you see any consistency here? There is none. I ask to speak to the manager. I can't tell you her name but it's a woman , glasses, part Asian ethnicity. She was extremely passive aggressive, condescending at times and just didn't care. This may come across as a trivial experience but I have been a contractor in north tacoma for 19 years and have slowly watched mclendons detoriate . It's sad, their is no customer service anymore because there is no accountability. You can say what you want to a customer, the manager can act however she wants and deal with issues as SHE SEES fit and there are no repercussions!!! Very sad. My father has raved about the store as long as I can remember. He is now an older man with health issues. He has been told he cannot wear a mask. He has gone into the store many times since the mask mandate and has never had an issue. Recently at the Kent store he was berated by a female employee in the paint shop for not wearing a mask. People without health issues do not understand what it is like. Many people feel the heat and difficulty breathing but it is so much worse when you are sick that it cannot be quantified in this way. To be illegally discriminated against due to health is unacceptable. And I have tried to call the corporate number without success. This may be the last time anyone in our circles try to do business with McLendon's I am very sad to say. read more

It was ok. Out of the few times I've been, it's been hit or miss. Sometimes, I get help pretty easily others I wander aimlessly looking for a person. The last time, I roamed the paint section looking for help for 10 minutes. I ended up going to the customer service desk to have them page someone. Even though they are aware, noone in the COMPLETE HARDWARE STORE is willing to correct the issue; no comment box, no special order offer, just a suggestion to go to any other company to search... Great staff who know the answers to your questions unlike Lowe's. You will typically pay more for the same items elsewhere.

I absolutely love McLendon. Very close to my residence, awesome selection, really friendly staff. My only gripe would be that the inside is very compact and filled to the brim. Not like that is their problem, just how the building was built. Whenever I need a spare part or odd piece McLendon is more likely to have it in stock than Home Depot or Lowes. Plus, they have a kind of makeshift coffee bar in the entrance-way. Not a bad touch. read more
