After researching and reading many reviews, I decided McKenzie River Dental was the place I wanted to try. Not having had any dental insurance for over 10 years, I hadn't seen a dentist in at least that long. I still don't have insurance, but I did have a broken and painful tooth, so I budgeted carefully to have it pulled. All I can say is if you are looking for a good dentist, this is the one you're looking for. The ladies were wonderful and so friendly. I got a timely appt, I did my paperwork online, they sent me appt reminders, and I did not wait a single second in the lobby past my appt start time. Dr. John Schilt was right on that tooth as soon as the xrays and initial exam by the assistant, whose name I may have forgotten, were completed. He deadened the area with no pain at all, and extracted that bad tooth in just minutes, NO PAIN!. I got a 5% discount for cash or check....who can argue? Dr. Schilt and every one of his lovely ladies were so friendly, but also professional at the same time. The office was clean and nice & cool. I have not one negative thing to say. I highly recommend giving this office a try if you are looking for a dentist. And the big plus for me is that it is only a few blocks from my house. Location, appointment scheduling, atmosphere were all great. Waited over 20 minutes. Amber (hygienist) was great. Dr Welch, lacking in professional manner, interest in patient, with more attention to income than care. Directed unnecessary treatment above contracted insurance prices. I requested insurance give predetermination. Dental office charges: $1,080 charge, $540 would be my part. Insurance determines: $194 charge, $97 my part. Beware! read more

It takes a lot of nonsense from a business for me to leave a bad review. As it turns out McKenzie River dental has done everything possible to earn the title of "worst dentist I've ever been to", which is a shame because the facility is modern and clean, the staff is friendly, but their billing practices and communication are criminal. I've been regularly seeing a dentist twice a year for the last 10+ years. I've had one or two cavities in my life and no other problems. Upon my first visit to McKenzie I was told they would take X-rays (26 by the way, talk about overbilling the insurance). The hygienist then said she would check for gum recession. After starting this check she said I had a lot of calculus so she would like to scale my teeth to remove it and have me come back to check my gums. Sounds good to me. She proceeded to spend 5-10 minutes on my teeth with the autoscaler (a part of every dental cleaning I've ever had) and sent me on my way. When I went to leave, the receptionist stopped me to say I had to pay my bill. What bill? I asked, knowing that cleanings were free with my insurance. I was then informed I had a "full mouth debridement" which is not part of a normal cleaning and therefore not covered as such. I was never at ANY POINT informed that what she was doing would not be covered by insurance. I should note about 12 years ago I had a multi year gap without going to the dentist. When I went in to see the hygienist she was worried about gum recession but said she would clean my teeth as normal and have me come back in 6 months to get an accurate measurement of gum recession. Everything was fine, no extra charge. I also saw another dentist after this whole fiasco and all my teeth and gums were healthy. Needless to say I was a bit confused why the services I received would not be covered. As far as I'm concerned I got a third of cleaning at most (scaling with no scrape or polish) and had to foot a bill for over $100. They later let me walk out without paying because the receptionist said I had weird insurance (BlueCross BlueShield) and perhaps they would cover it. After a couple weeks I got a bill in the mail. I had another conversation with the hygienist and the practice manager, but after all the back and forth I decided it was just easier to pay the bill and be done with it and find a new dentist. A couple months after that I got a second bill from McKenzie River, apparently for an adjustment that the insurance didn't cover. I called again and spoke with the practice manager and expressed my displeasure. She said she would talk to the owner and they could probably waive the additional bill. Well today I got my final notice in the mail for that additional bill and it is the final straw. So here's my story, I don't think I'm being unreasonable here, perhaps I am but I'll let you decide. All I know is after going to multiple dentists and doctors my whole life, I've never been billed for anything without prior communication that it wouldn't be covered. And I'm still not convinced I received what the insurance company would consider a full mouth debridement. After talking to some more local friends I've now surprisingly heard even more horror stories about this place. I'm not sure what they do to keep their reviews so high, but I wouldn't trust it one bit. Beware. read more

Came in for the first time and received a full exam, x-rays, and a cleaning! I was running a little behind with the paperwork but the front receptionist was so sweet and patient! Service was all around friendly and kind all the way from the front door to the cleaning and checking out! It's hard to find a good dental office sometimes and this place really stood out to me. I've been going to this provider for over 5 years now, and I love the staff! Even tho it's 6 months between visits they always make me feel like a returning friend. I've had no issues with any of the work they've done. I appreciate the level of care they put toward fixing issues with cavities and the like, without making me feel pressured or guilty for needing it, or if I have to schedule it out. read more

She will not only thoroughly clean your teeth, but remember things about you that you told her your last visit and will follow up on them. Yay - the best! I cried tears of joy today. I have been under the care of Dr. Schilt for the past year. My teeth were absolutely horrible (14 years of bulimia will do that). I had gaps, holes, worn down teeth - just awful looking. And, I smile a lot! Today, my last treatment was completed. Four beautiful implants (he even grafted bone and added membrane), and six crowns across the top front teeth. My beautiful smile has returned and I no longer have to be concerned about strategically placing myself in front of the camera. Perfect because I have graduations and weddings coming up. Dr. Schilt took the time to explain every step and why he was doing it. His bedside manners are gentle. He called in the evening to make sure I was okay. And, wow, he is so nice to his assistants, saying please when he asks for instruments and stuff, and then saying thank you! Yep, this is definitely the best dentist in OR!!! read more
