We had a fantastic blown-in insulation/air sealing service provided by the team. The three guys were prompt, friendly, efficient and left our place spotless. They laid down tarping on our carpeted stairs and taped off plastic "curtains" to seal the work area from dust. Once complete, they vacuumed their path and left nothing visible behind. I really expected some debris and dust left behind after they were finished, but there was none! I first got referred to this company using ServiceMagic, that online service you just plug in your info and what you need, and they match you with 3 companies. McHale's was the first to call me back, within a couple hours. The lady who called me was super nice, not at all pushy. She made an appointment for a free estimate. The guy who came out for our estimate was awesome, he looked around and made some suggestions that actually saved us money! He had all his facts and statistics about the best types of insulation and didn't talk us into anything we didn't need. He scheduled an appointment for service within a few days. The installers were great. They were a little late, but called precisely at our appointment time to let us know (actually good thing they were late, because we totally overslept). Even though they were late, they finished the job in the scheduled time slot. They did not leave ONE SPECK of dust behind. They cleaned up everything, and except for our fluffy new insulation, you'd never know they'd been there. After the service was completed, they sent us all the PG&E forms completely filled out so we could get a rebate! Sweet! I didn't have to do anything but fill in our name as it appears on the bill and sign it. This is by far one of the best customer service experiences I have ever had. Our 42 year old home had about 2 inches of insulation and a R factor of negative 5. Our house was the ambient temperature year round, or worse. 105 outside? Easily 108 inside. We wanted to redo the master bath, put in new duct work, get the asbestos out of the vents, and wire for ethernet. Knowing we were doing this, we asked McHale to work with us in two stages. They came and sucked out the old insulation, which came with the added bonus of a few dead rats and poop. They sanitized the attic. When the other work was done, they came back and air sealed the attic and blew in new insulation. They were always on time, clean, neat, responsible, and were reasonably priced for doing a really unpleasant job. I wouldn't want to spend my day in a stifling, claustrophobic attic. McHale's removed all my old insulation and installed new insulation throughout my entire attic. They sealed all the ceiling penetrations (lights, etc.). They did a great job at a reasonable price. They also did a very good job cleaning up afterwards. read more

I contacted McHale's to get a second bid, just to make sure my contractor was competitive - and I received a bid that was LOWER than my original contractor, and included under-the-floor insulation, which I had been told was impossible to get done. The job has now been completed - they removed all of the existing insulation in the attic, and installed new, higher-grade borate insulation. The walls were insulated too, by drilling holes in the exterior. I was concerned with how that was going to look on my painted wood siding, but after sanding and repainting, you really have to look very, very hard to even see where the holes were drilled. In addition, they sealed the entire house, including a very hard-to-get-to gas fireplace, and all ceiling access hatches, plumbing and electrical penetrations, and such. What a difference! The temperature in the master bedroom, which is far away from the thermostat, is now very even, where it used to be alternatively too hot and too cold. My variable-speed furnace runs on the lower setting almost always now, where it used to have to blast at the highest setting before. From what I can see, my PG&E gas-bill has been reduced by about 40%! I warmly recommend these guys - Dan Hair, the owner, is a real pro, and knows insulation like nobody's business. read more

McHale's Insulation was a contact through the Bay Area Regional Area Network (BayAreaEnergyUpgrade.org) they came vacuumed out my entire attic then left me time to do modifications in my attic space. They returned a latter date, foamed sealed all the attic spaces that could leak air into the living space and then blew in attic insulation to an R38 or better standard. They gave a great price, and were HONEST when it turns out that certain work was not needed after they started the job and were able to have a fair, rational discussion when we thought a square footage estimate was off due to some inaccessible parts of the attic. They worked quickly and were very clean. Work performed: - Remove old, rat dropping infested insulation from attic - Install new insulation batts under the floor in the crawl space - Air seal the attic - Install new blow-in insulation in the attic - Fill exterior walls with blow-in insulation (turns out this was not needed) I'd recommend them to anyone. read more

After internet research, escaping an insulation scam, several quotes, and reading a great book (Insulate and Weatherize by Bruce Harley) we chose McHale's and are so glad we did. There are times when you get what you pay for and this was one of them. All of our many concerns were heard and addressed in our unique attic reinsulation project. Everyone we dealt with from McHale's was gracious and responsive despite our micromanaging. They removed all the old insulation comprised of deteriorated, mangled fiberglass batts, thin, brittle, cracked plastic sheeting, old 1/2 inch fiber board insulation from the original flat top, and bits of debris left from the original flat top tar and gravel roof. They prepped the tongue and groove attic floor by sealing every joint with foam before doing the other prep for the cellulose blow-in including laying our requested 10 ml plastic vapor barrier. This was a tremendous amount of work all done expertly in two long work days for the installers Anthony, Jose, and George (one day). If and when we decide to do the walls we will be calling McHale's again. McHale Insulation Company and its representatives completely live up to the company's mission statement. read more

McHale's recently installed blown-in insulation between the basement and first floor of my house. Everything was perfect, beginning with the very efficient and pleasant person at the office, to the timing (I had to change the first date we'd arranged, and they were very gracious about it) to the work itself. Two men arrived, right on time, and we verified the scope of the project, which involved drilling holes in the ceiling for the insulation. The men covered everything in the rooms, worked hard all day, and at the end I found the ceilings beautifully and smoothly patched, the rooms free of insulation dust, and everything in order. They also checked upstairs, very conscientiously, to make sure no insulation had been forced up through the floor boards. They had had to use quite a bit more insulation than expected, but didn't charge extra for it. Great experience, and things are both warmer and quieter now, with the insulation. read more
