They took great care of my husband's 20 years old diesel truck.. We were told by another shop he needed ball joints as it turns out that was not the case.. Thank you Joe! read more

These guys are just the best. Had some failing breaks, they got me in the same day, came in $400 below their estimate and were just a pleasure to talk to. An honest and kind mechanic is a rare thing - look no further, this is the spot. read more

I asked Joe to put in a vacuum pump for my brake booster (Jeep Cherokee, 1988) since I had less than good brakes. This was a custom job: he had to find a location for the pump, and then do the wiring so that my brake pedal would activate the pump and then the brakes. He installed it in a great location and now I have better brakes than I can remember. Joe does great work. read more

Joe is an excellent mechanic. I trust him to work on both my car and my truck. He charges a fair price for his work. I like Robin in the office as well. These are two solid people running a great shop. Highly recommended! read more

I have been taking my cars to Joe at McGinnis for 5 years! He has always been so wonderful and honest to me. He has been more than fair in his pricing I highly highly recommend him! He is so knowledgeable and explain things and gives advice as to what to do next. As a single woman he was referred to me by my neighbor. Best contact I've ever had! read more

after $1019.00 0n a flat rate 2.5 hour job n beingvwithout my car for a week the chief mechanic finally had the time to order 2 new transmission shift modules n replace them not knowing if this would remedy the problem. Luckily it did! we changed my Transmission fluid n put a Lucas additive to make up for the wear n tear created by300,000 plus miles of mostly freeway driving ! They did the replacement based on what the computer in my car told them was required not from experience! please do not rely on U tube videos to tell u how easy something is to change out, this wasn't the case n the modules were located in the outer part of the transmission and not within the pan. read more

Have been taking my trucks and cars to McGuinness to get lifted, and then repaired when I break them/have any accidents. Always quick to respond, and willing to work on what I have. Started with an F-150 that I had them lift, then lost that truck and brought them a GX470 to lift. They haven't hestitated to lift them, repair them, or do custom work when needed (more recently lost a wheel on the highway after doing work myself, and needed the shock cut off of the axle housing, a new bracket fabricated, and new struts added). They were able to do it all for cheaper than expected, and it looks great/drives great again! read more

I went to 6 different mechanics in San Rafael to find somebody to work on my Jeep. I have an old 1980 CJ-7 Renegade that needed a lot of TLC and wouldn't pass smog. Nobody wanted to take it on until I found Quint at McGuinness mechanics. I was ready to give up hope on it and tried to sell it a few different times, but Quint brought life back in that jeep. And I love it now :-) he did such a great job. And he got it smogged for me and it is officially legal. I'm happy to say I have a new mechanic and even happier to say I have a really cool, fun car to enjoy. Thank you Quint! read more

Another satisfied customer. Honest, quick and friendly. They are definitely going to be my new local mechanic shop. As a bonus they have some cool classic jeeps to look at if it's your kind of thing :) read more

Here is a handy bullet pointed list why McGuinness Mechanics should be your go-to joint for your auto repair needs. * Honest. No bullshit. Zero. A place you'd send your grandmother to. * Friendly. Down to earth good people. * Reasonably priced. I had A LOT of work done on my 1966 International Scout. Quint knew my budget and was respectful as possible to it. * Problem solver. There was no manual for the work I needed done to my Scout 800. Quint solved about 800 different puzzles and walked me through how he solved each one. I don't know what else there is you're looking for in a mechanic. If I did, I would add it to the list for you. -Beau read more

The most honest, reliable mechanic I've ever dealt with. Prices are fair and work is always done right. If not, they'll set it right. Won't go anywhere else. read more

I seldom write reviews. But this place deserves my time and commendation. I have ALWAYS taken my car to factory dealers to have my cars worked on. I have never trusted or have been willing to risk using a local, non-OEM mechanic. The subsequent result of that is hefty premiums and high costs, for even relatively simple tasks. A friend referred me to McGuinness, when I otherwise couldn't find an alternative within the required time. Skeptical, I was out of options. Suffice to say, that one experience, has resulted in 10 years of faithful patronage to McGuinness. If it's their fault, they'll make it right. If they can find a more affordable alternative, they'll offer it up (even at the expense of making more money). In short, they are always determined to do what is fair, honest and integrous. I have taken every car I have ever owned for the better part of a decade. Our cars, our children's cars, our friend's cars. Which brings up another point. We have referred many friends and family to McGuinness, who in turn, have experienced nothing short of similar service mentioned, herein. I wish I could fully explain the comfort of having a local shop, knowing they will always do right by you. read more

Quint the owner, and his daughter Nikki who run the office are great. I have an older 60s car and they could easily try to upsell things that need to be done, but they are honest and in my experience have been quick and easy to work with. read more

Quint is gone to play with his grandkids and Joe has taken over at a new location on Woodland. Both are really outstanding guys. My kid bought his first car. An old F150 with 200K that needed a new ABS System. The dealer wanted more than my kid paid for the truck just for the ABS part. Joe took the time to go out and find one for 25% of the dealer price. Tell me many mechanics in Marin would do that. If you want a quality job done at a reasonable price go to McGuinness Motors. read more

I wanted to install a lift kit on my Honda Element, and mechanics at McGuinness did a fantastic job. They called the lift kit manufacturers to make sure they understood the process, and did all other research necessary to give me a fai quote. The price was reasonable and working with the staff there was a joy. If you need any specialty 4x4 work, or you need basic work done on your vehicle, don't hesitate to contact these guys. They well treat you with respect, charge you fairly, and do great work. read more

The work is top notch and finished in a timely manner. Seriously my truck was just tuned and runs like new. The guys as well as Nicki are confident , honest , reliable and greet you with a smile. My family has been taking our vehicles here for years, and there's good reason to do so. Service at McGuiness Mechanics is friendly, fast, accommodating, reliable, and very honest. Recently, I had Quint take a look a truck I was considering purchasing. He inspected the vehicle on the same day I called, and within half an hour was able to offer an honest and professional assessment of the car. His advice allowed me to confidently pass on the deal and save a couple thousand dollars. As a Marin County native, I always suggest McGuiness to anyone looking for a good mechanic. read more

These guys fixed my truck when it died and they didn't overcharge for what they did. They were easy to deal with, diagnosed the issue correctly, and fixed the truck promptly. What more could I ask for? I'm grateful. I'm bored waiting for my flight so I'm doing something I should have done a while ago...writing them a good review (and working hard to make it as long as yelp apparently wants it to be). read more

Friendly, honest and close to home - what else could you ask for? I found this wonderful small family run shop last year. I called around to find a mechanic that I felt comfortable with and was going to give me fair quotes. I decided to go with McGuinnes and I am so glad I did. When I took my car in, I THOUGHT I needed one thing but they told me while I could do that, I only needed part of that and they saved me a few hundred dollars. This week my car needed a tune up, sunroof repair and brakes. I knew this wasn't going to be cheap so I did what I do and researched the work then called a couple places about some of it but once again I went back to McGuinnes. Best quotes! They did the work for less that the quotes and saved me some money again AND my car was done early. From the moment you call, Niki is nice, informed and happy. She's just like this in person as well. Quint, (her father) and his guys are super nice and tell it like it is. No hiding information, no ducking questions, etc. They look for solutions not to create more problems. It's refreshing. Looking for a mechanic? Give them a call. read more

McGuinness is the best, no question about it. I have always been extremely happy with their service. I have no hesitation recommending McGuinness Mechanics to everyone. Honest, capable, and always a pleasure to work with. This is by far the best mechanic in Marin. read more

This family operation is so classy... they have serviced our vehicles for many years. They go beyond what is expected to perform small, everyday miracles without making any big deal of it. Recently I had a family emergency but still managed to drop off our truck for servicing since it was being borrowed for a long road trip. Quint saw me pacing outside waiting for a taxi so I could get home and then to the hospital and he dropped everything to drive me home. I got a little teary... These folks have small town values and big hearts. I love doing business with them. read more

McGuinness Mechanics has always been so honest, and they do such a great job when my 30 year old Toyota 4Runner needs help. Honesty is a huge thing, but there are still others out there who aren't. However, I'm so happy that I can trust McGuinness Mechanics to always be honest and to take the best care of my 4Runner. I completely recommend them as I trust them implicitly. They're also very nice and explain things when I need more information. I'd give them more stars if I could!! I'm so glad my family found them years ago! read more

Have a classic 1980 Bronco that needed exhaust manifold replaced. Did a great job and the truck runs like new. Took the job knowing that complications can occur when working on older vehicles and took it with a smile. Not often you get to talk to the owner and Quint was swell. Nice job and Thank You! Would recommend! read more

Really easy to work with this team! I have a 1994 Super Duty with a 1951 ford bus bidy on it and needed help with the EGR Valve. Even though my vehicle was to big to get up on the lift they took care of us and turned it around in an hour. Not a hard job but nice to see great customer service and speed. read more

I don't know of too many mechanics who are as "outgoing" as Quint...I'm for the most part a DIY guy, but occasionally things take longer than they should. Quint has always been there, what a resource! He recently stopped by my house to ensure I assembled my Dana 44 rear axle properly! Who does that, for real?! Look no further people, Quint will take care of you. read more

I have had my BMW serviced here a few times. A friendly staff and so forth, but I question whether the mechanics have all of the latest technology needed to make repairs in a timely fashion. I left my car there with an ABS issue that took a WEEK to get diagnosed. Their $400 solution was to reset the computer! I drove away and the ABS light came on. They actually didn't know what was wrong. A large BMW dealership caught the problem, did the repair, and also gave me a report on other issues. That is good service. McGuinness was not up to speed, in my book. read more

The folks over at McGuinness are as good as it gets. This staff treats people in an honest and genuine manner whether they've been a customer with them 10 years, just walked in on a referral, or called in off the website. Charlotte, at the front desk, is a super sincere gal and is just the perfect ambassador for the service the guys in the garge put out. I've had a couple of things pop up with my old beloved Toyota of late and they understand what it is to see an old beauty fade (the 4-Runner). The service is top notch from this mechanical staff and they are not there to rip anyone off. It feels with this company like you have taken a step back in time where the local garage is your friend and we are all simply part of the fabric of a true community dynamic. I have found everyone from the mechanics (Joe), to the owner (Quint), and then Charlotte on the phones, to be professional and pleasant, and they are doing only necessary work and at a fair price. I have travelled from Lagunitas to Santa Rosa when something is up with my truck for 5 years just to keep an honest mechanic on my side - left over from when I lived up there - but since having McGuinness recommended to me I have found a new friend in the auto repair business and it is so important to my peace of mind driving an older rig and all. Obviously, this shop comes highly recommended in my book. Ace mechanics and top notch, personable service! Why go anywhere else? read more

In the twenty years I've been bringing vehicles here, I have never had a bad experience. No job has ever cost more than the original quote, and on the occasions I was wrong about what needed to be done they have even saved me money on unnecessary work. It's rare to find a shop so honest. I have recently moved out of California, and I have found it difficult to find a shop here that comes even close to the quality and reliability I've come to rely on. read more

Great people! The owner came out himself to look at my car and tell me what's wrong, and went far enough to actually show me what needed to get fixed and how. I recommend this place to anyone looking for an honest mechanic! read more

I had a fairly minor issue. I got a quote, and was told the quote given is worst case scenario and could be lower. I made it clear that I needed the car back the same day because I needed to be somewhere that evening, I was told it would be done the same day. I have the car dropped off early in the morning. In the afternoon, I learn that the car will not be finished that day and nothing can be done about it. The reason given was that a part had to be made by another vendor; it made sense, but it would have been critical to know this prior to me dropping off the car and not at the last minute. I would have gone to Plan B if I had this critical information. No apology provided and no responsibility for oversight taken. I come to pick up the car, and I am surprised to learn that the bill is about 33% more than the quote provided. Explanation was that the shop had to pay the outside vendor. That may make sense, but this is information that should have been provided in advance. The shop should have obtained my consent prior to just sending off the order to the vendor and letting me know about it after-the-fact. Again, no apology nor responsibility taken for oversight. Never returning here. read more

Quint was recommended to me by a local tire shop to do some work they couldn't, nor could anyone else I called. He had no problem taking on the job - a somewhat tricky lift kit install for a 4Runner. The best in the business. You won't find more honest, knowledgeable, or hard-working mechanics in Marin. Quint was absolutely amazing. I took my 75 Bronco there, and he had to do some pretty major work on it. He even had to track down an old Bronco that he bought just for parts.
