I would like to start this review of McGrath Automotive particularly McGrath Ford in Hiawatha, Iowa by saying that this was not a review done in haste nor is it a anger filled response that I will regret later. This review has been written after much research, multiple personal experiences, and also from the input and I must be honest, opinions of many other local residents of Cedar Rapids along with their experiences. I want to make it clear that by no means am I disgruntled with the sales or finance departments because those men and women will go over and beyond if able. This review is for what I feel is probably the most important department of any auto dealership. The service department. I originally purchased a 2019 Chevrolet Malibu from McGrath's West Dale Superstore and was absolutely pleased with the process including the lengths that they went to that didn't have to. It wasn't until it came time for my Malibu to go into the Detail Center at McGrath Auto for Undercoating and Rustproofing that I started seeing the validity of some of the stories I had heard. I dropped the vehicle off at the West Dale Store as directed and was given a loaner vehicle. I was told that it would be about 1-2 days as the Undercoating would need time set and also because I was getting routine service performed. During this time, not once did I bug them and not once did they call me or consult with me. It wasn't until after 4 days of waiting, and noticing on the Chevrolet app on my phone that my Malibu had been taken up to be Rustproofed and that was it. It had been dropped off at around 10:30AM the day I left it with West Dale Superstore and from there it never moved from where they had parked it. In the meantime, a large portion of my income was hanging in limbo because I could not use the loaner vehicle for my job due to having a dealer plate on it and not being registered to me. So after 4 days of sitting and waiting, I called the West Dale Store and they called the Detail Center and found that a "miscommunication" had led to them not even knowing my Malibu was there. Mind you, they were the ones that called me almost every day until I was able to set up a time to have Undercoating done yet they claim they didn't know it was even there. So 3 days after that, I get my Malibu back, pick it up at West Dale Superstore, and it was filthy. There were fingerprints and smears from people or things that had rubbed against the car, the inside smelled like paint chemicals so bad that I had to open all the windows and let it air out enough for me to drive it home. On the drive home, I found grease smears and grease globs and fingerprints all over the steering wheel, turn signal, gear shift, seat belt, and stereo. There were no seat covers over the driver seat, nor paper mats on the floor although they could have been removed by West Dale Superstore when it was dropped off to them so I can't honestly claim they were never there. This was the only issue I had with the Malibu however to me this was still not acceptable. It wasn't until a very close family member started having problems with a Jeep Patriot they had bought from McGrath Auto and it was beginning to have one problem after another, and they depended this vehicle to get to specialist medical appointments as one of them had very advanced COPD and emphysema along with a crushed T-6 in his back. When this Jeep started randomly dying while driving, I talked to them about going back to McGrath and seeing what they could do for them even though they already had a loan out for the Jeep. The day they went to the West Dale Superstore, I went with them and once again the Sales and Finance guys did an amazing job of finding a way to get them a much more dependable vehicle which brought a lot of relief to them. They were sold a 2019 Ford Escape SEL, it was in very good condition, and was a much more dependable vehicle. They also added the Extended Warranty through McGrath Auto. After about a year with no problems, they were noticing that they kept blowing headlight bulbs, and at an alarming rate. It didn't matter how expensive of a light bulb they bought they would only last about a week tops and then blow. Now I am no electrician, but that's a little excessive and I would say there is something wrong. So it was scheduled for service at McGrath Ford in Hiawatha, Iowa. They explained to them the problem, and left it with them. After a day or so of having it, they called them back and said that they didn't find a problem anywhere except that they didn't have OEM Ford bulbs in them and handed them the keys and said they were good to go. And then charged them over $300. They literally were in no better place than when they dropped the car off. Also as of the date of this review they still are still going through light bulbs like crazbulbs they had in when they dry. I also want to point out that the bulbs that they were charged $300 plus for were literally the same brand of Sylvania light

I never had to haggle. Just a good square deal. Second their service department is the best. I had a serious problem with my first car and they never hurried or made me feal inferior for all the issues. They truly put some serious work and thought into fixing the car - it was just one of those things that was elusive. We finally came to an equitable agreement since they couldn't fix it. I am now driving my second Murano. I sing their praises all of the time to my friends including my husband. He needed a new truck, we went to several places. I convinced him to talk to Dave to see if he could find what my husband was trying to find. My husband was so happy with them he also purchased a new truck from Dave.. The best part is while waiting for service I get visit with friends they are really happy here also.also.

All we ask is very nicely professionally is there any other discounts you can apply, He made a comment if you have a ability to write 1 check for this car why would you ask for another $500. I was like you treating me like this because i have ability to make one payment. Very pathetic and horrible. I work hard for my money you have no right to say anything like this. God is watching you watch this person has long way to go and lot to learn.

Figured I'd stick…read moreto a dealer since I didn't know the area and needed a trustworthy oil change given my 2k mile journey back. Found it relatively easy to schedule an appointment. Overall pretty satisfied. I didn't get a quote beforehand, but was a little surprised at the price, $66 for an oil change, which could be right on market for Cedar Rapids, but my oil change costs $74 in California. I was expecting high 50s given that there were no extra services performed such as tire rotation, etc. Complimentary car wash left something to be desired, Not sure if it's soap or they just didn't get all the dust off my car (it wasn't super dusty, just the normal amount of dust from a car that's sat in a driveway for a couple weeks without a wash or rain). And given that I have a black car, it is noticeable. I have white droplets and residue from my hood, to the top of the car. I don't expect a professional wash, just not expecting residue. If you want extra social-distance I'd recommend walking over to the dealer waiting area, no one was there when I stopped in, and they had a counter area where you could work on a computer, and complimentary wifi, allowing me to continue working during the service, which was great. Customer service was generally very good, my service rep was very friendly and polite and had a great attitude, it was disappointing that he wasn't wearing a mask and only about 25% of the staff seemed to be wearing a mask. I don't know why masks are so controversial, but given the science, as a customer, when I am at a business that can't be bothered to wear a mask I always think, I guess they don't care about the health of their customers. And it becomes a little painful handing your money over to someone who doesn't care about your basic health. If you're immune-compromised, I would find somewhere else to get your oil changed during the duration of Covid-19.

On the website you can enter a price as an offer. I entered the price of $19,000. This was a little low but I was hoping we could negotiate. A coworker recommended this place to me. I visited the dealership and was late due to the construction (they didn't tell me!). I was given a salesperson who did not know anything about a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited! What's the horsepower? "Um, don't know, I'll have to ask" Is there hill descent control? Is there hill start assist? What is the engine? What are the tires? "Um, I'll have to get back with you about that". The guy was nice and there was no pressure. But really, he couldn't answer any of my questions. I told him about my price offer and that I had done research and thought it was pretty reasonable since the car is not new but used and there are better offers in in the area. He asked me if there were any other cars I was interested in. I said a Subaru Forester. He said he would go look and see if they had any on their other lots. He disappeared for some time and then returned with the manager. The manager told me there was no way I could get a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited anywhere around here for $19k. He said he looked at all of McGrath's lots and there was just no way. He showed me some computer paper which had a price of $25k which he said was the price they bought the car. Are you kidding me! What a bunch of malarkey! He said he would go down $500 but no more. Well, I thanked him for his time and walked out the store. I never did get the info on the Subaru or any of my Wrangler questions answered. It's probably for the best since I doubt the salesperson I was with knew anything about a Subaru either. They should have just told me they couldn't meet my price instead of wasting my time. The whole time I was waiting for the salesperson to find out about the Subaru, they were in the researching if there were any Jeep Unlimiteds for $19k? Really?! Why didn't they just come out and tell me straight up they couldn't meet my price but they could help me find another car? Instead they made me look like I was a liar! I guess it's okay for the salesperson to lie but if a customer is lying, then the management will spend 30 minutes doing research to find out if the customer is lying. Iowa is not a good place to buy a Jeep since they are overpriced here due to their popularity. Chicago is the best place to go to find a fair price. It's not as popular since most urbanites want a fuel efficient car. This experience left me really bad impressions of McGraths and Jeep. Only go here if you want a car that is overpriced and you are not willing (too lazy) to go to Chicago for a fair price.
