Popped in and grabbed a pink champagne cupcake since that is what they are known for. The cupcake was ok- it was in the fridge and had a slight fridge taste, the frosting was hard (stiff due to it being cold), cupcake itself was pretty standard, nice that there was some filling. Overall, nothing about the cupcake stood out, there was no champagne flavor (not even a subtle hint). Service was fine. read more

So to be fair --- I did not actually taste the any of the pastries or the champagne cake. This review is for their service. We walked in wanting to try these amazing champagne cakes, however as soon as we walked in, we were not greeted, the lady was standing there arms crossed, and not friendly or approachable. I wanted to try the cake, however they did not sell by the slice, but understandable. However they did not even suggest the cupcakes they had and only found out afterwards they had cupcakes. When we asked what their favorite item was, she suggested one item that looked the most unappetizing. Overall, not sure if the lady there today was having an off day, but be better to your potential customers. The attitude totally turned me off, and sadly will not be back. read more

Stopped by for a few pastries. The ladies were super helpful at explaining items we didn't know like a Divinity cookie, which ended up being super yummy. My favorite thing was the almond ring. It was a big portion, probably meant for more people to share, but it was so good I ate it all. I will definitely be going back for one of those. We also tried a snickerdoodle cookie, a berry pastry, and I think it was called a crispie? (flat cinnamon roll/elephant ear type thing) which were all good. read more

I got 3 flavors of cupcakes: Mixed Berry, Chocolate, Pink Champagne. I thought the chocolate was going to be my favorite but the mixed berry was by far my #1. I look forward to trying new flavors in the future! The two vanilla cupcakes were filled which was an unexpected but nice surprise even though I take the bottom off my cupcakes & make them into a sandwich. The pink champagne was the least flavorful in my opinion but I'm not mad at it. None of them are overly sweet which I like a lot! I think they all have buttercream frosting. The cookies are good. I bought this cake fresh for my daughter's first birthday . My family happily works in the culinary field and yes we decided to buy a cake instead of always baking for others . The cake : White cake there is NO HINT OR FLAVOR OF CHAMPAGNE. The "Filling " is butter cream vanilla and the icing is just plain vanilla . There was nothing special about this cake and it's sad since we have bought cookies and cupcakes which tasted 100% great . I spent $100 here on extra cookies and treats for the party, happily supporting a local business for their specialty cake which is not "it" anymore . Review for Thanksgiving pies and dinner rolls. I would give McGavin 10/10 for outstanding service. I sent an email asking if it was too late to order and received a prompt response back saying it wasn't and they would be happy to take my order. I received a phone call the following day confirming my order and payment method. Then on my scheduled pickup day/time, it was so quick and easy! The apple pie was sooo delicious!! I'm definitely ordering again. The pumpkin pie was also delicious but a little heavy on cinnamon (for my taste). All in all, just a wonderful experience at McGavins! For some reason, this bakery didn't come up when I was searching the area. I stumbled upon it after getting a coffee and cheddar muffin at the coffee shop a couple of doors down. It was bright and inviting. The person behind the counter was kind, friendly, and understanding when I told her that I needed a few minutes to peruse the cases. The pink champagne cake and cupcakes are their most popular items. Of course I had to get the cupcake to try it for myself and it was wonderful. The cake and icing were light and fluffy, not to sweet. It was quite a treat. They had a plethora of baked items and decorated cookies for Mother's Day. Beautiful cakes in their display cases and tons of whimsical, yummy looking cookies. A good place to bring in kids or to stop for special occasion treats. I was impressed by the attention to detail in the piping work on the cakes and cookies. It's a true museum here. Their storefront is clean and the retro vibe is immaculate. We were greeted quickly and served with efficiency. We got an apple danish, pink champagne cupcake, strawberry champagne cupcake and snickerdoodle cookie. The pink champagne cupcake was amazing and one of the best cakes I've ever had! The apple danish was okay. I wouldn't get the danish or cookie again but the cupcakes were great. We had lunch down the road and looked on yelp for a place to swing in and grab a treat. This bakery came up, so we walked the two blocks to get to it. They were kind and helpful and had a decent selection to choose from. I ended up getting a few treats which included a pink champagne cake pop, a brownie and a fruit bar of some kind. Everything tasted great, maybe not things we would crave and make a stop there just for it, but we enjoyed it all. The cake pop was super creamy inside, but all of them were cracked or smushed, which is a bummer. So why the three stars Kimber? Well, my one big problem was... well, a big one. My son got the dirt brownie with worms on top, of course. When we got in the car and he dug in, he said from the backseat 'oh wow. I didn't know it had nuts in it!' And that, is a big problem. It didn't look like it had nuts in it. No signage said it had nuts in it. The worker didn't mention it had nuts in it. But it sure did. While my son doesn't have a nut allergy, it's scary to think they don't label anything with nuts. I know most people with allergies are prone to asking about anything they purchase, but it still didn't sit well with me. The sign for the brownie just said dirt brownie. After we left I noticed all the labels were pretty vague about the items. While I don't expect an extensive list of what's inside, a little more information would be helpful. read more

So so bummed. 5 years ago we got a pink champagne cake from here. It was the best thing we'd ever tasted. As far as cakes go. We paid $50 for one yesterday... it's not pink champagne. It's white cake. It's also not butter creme frosting, it's crisco/lard with sugar and coloring. Here's the deal. Champagne cake just like red velvet has a vinegar component that gives it a very distinct texture and flavor. People often substitute chocolate cake, add red dye, and call it red velvet. They made this horrible choice with their pink champagne apparently. They didn't even dye it pink though. It's very clearly just plain old white cake and it tastes like it. Bad call guys. read more

Picked up some cupcakes (pink champagne, chocolate, and pineapple) and shortbread cookies to share with friends. The woman behind the counter was happy to explain in great detail what made their cakes and cupcakes unique. The shortbread cookies had some very creative designs for the kiddos. The thing I love about their cupcakes/cakes is they are the perfect amount of sweetness, not overly sweet... And decadently moist and soft. I can't remember ever having better. My friends were raving about the cupcakes too. I'm only in town for business, but if I lived here, I'd probably only get cakes from this bakery. They were superb! I have lived in Bremerton all my life. I remember enjoying McGavin's pink champagne cake starting in the 1960's and then throughout the years. In recent years the flavor is just not the same. Years ago the frosting, cake, and filling had a strong champagne taste. When the cake sat in the room you could smell the champagne flavoring in the air. I had the pink champagne cake several days ago at a function. It was good but tasted like a regular white cake, with a vanilla cream filling, and strawberry flavored icing. I talked to two other long time Bremerton residents and they agreed the flavor of the cake is not the same. Holiday weekends means I have the time to go places that I would usually not frequent. Thus, I decided yesterday to take my first visit to Bremerton. One of the places on my list to try in Bremerton was McGavin's which is one of the oldest bakeries in the area. There has to be something to be said about establishments with longevity. The shop is a bit away from downtown Bremerton. It is in a central shopping district near a Safeway. The businesses in this area look a bit aged, as such the storefront did also. I was fortunate, but unfortunate as the shop owners were going on vacation. As such, there was no pastries to be found. Not seeing the full repertoire, it is kind of hard to rate an establishment. Still, the storefront had some selection to choose from including their signature pink champagne cakes, several pudding cakes, pecan rolls and several types of cookies. Everything here is pretty reasonably priced. From the truncated selection, I picked up a rum pudding cake ($5) and some pecan rolls ($.80 each). The rum pudding cake is reminiscent of chiffon cake for me. I liked the flavor, but it is excessively sweet. Not a good sign when your teeth ache from sugar overdose. The pecan rolls had the same result. Nevertheless, I think McGavin's is worth a visit given the relative dearth of bakeries in Bremerton. I believe there are just four, not counting Safeway. The offerings here are of the old fashioned American bakery sort which I appreciate. There is no gimmick here, just goodness. read more

Pretty disappointed with the cupcakes I ordered for my sisters baby shower. They were supposed to be lemonade flavored with raspberry filling. They didn't taste like lemonade at all only like food coloring. Also I was expecting raspberry jelly inside for what they charged me for the filling but they only had a little teaspoon of raspberry flavored frosting in them. They were very boring looking and I had go buy sprinkles for them! I paid roughly $85 for them which was way to much for the quality I received. read more

I was in Bremerton for some work stuff and found my work day ending early. After having a very corporate lunch at Moctezuma, I wanted something a little more rustic and fortunately I saw the McGavin's sign on the way back to the hotel. I was just going to get a pair of small pastries to go, but the woman up front suggested I try a rum cake ($5.95) as they just came out of the oven. I was a little surprised when out came a full-sized cake but ya know, whatever. Here's the thing -- I agree with the criticism that this place is definitely not modern in its flavors and I admit, I do like my pastries to be less sweet than this, but in a town that doesn't have a lot of independent bakeries (are there any others in Bremerton?), McGavin's is something special. The doughnuts are just as cheap by the dozen as your random Safeway, QFC fare; and my favorite standout flavors are the buttermilk (good if you dig the old-fashioned glazed) and orange (with little pieces of orange rind mixed in with the icing). Not to mention all the cookies with hypercolor frosting and designs...neat! NOTE: The pink champagne cake McG's is famous for is DEFINITELY something you need to try. Do you like cake? Do you like champy? All systems go! It's so light, fluffy, and moist...and RICH...super for special occasions and birthdays. I have to be honest, I was really excited to try this bakery. The sign outside is so cute, I've driven past it many times and follow them on Facebook- the treats always looked delicious.. My friend was in town for thanksgiving, so we spent the Friday after celebrating her birthday. So I finally got around to trying it, with her, and the inside, for starters, is dark and dingy. It's small, cold, and just kinda uncomfortable. The cases were ill lit and half empty. The cookies were messily frosted, the space needle one was thickly frosted with dark food coloring I can't imagine it tasted good. They had a super slim selection My friend got the brownie with nuts and a raspberry cream cheese danish. The danish was ok, a little dry but the filling was good, and the brownie had a lot of frosting and nuts. I didn't get the prices from her. I got a pink champagne cupcake ($2.50) and a chocolate cream pie ($11). I will say I've never spent that much on a cupcake before. It was pretty good, but tiny. Like an xs cupcake with barely any frosting. The chocolate pie was soooo disappointing. It was basically chocolate pudding in a crust. It was heavy, and boring tasting, with weird little dots of frosting around the outside. I thought it was whipped cream, but no. Weird heavy frosting. Chocolate pudding with frosting. Not what I anticipated. I pulled it out the next day and it was leaking, like a liquid was oozing out of it. It's cute, and their famous cupcakes are decent, but I'd honestly skip it and go to the Safeway bakery.. I am a huge proponent for supporting local businesses, but this isn't worth it. The PINK CHAMPAGNE CAKE has been a birthday tradition in our family for over 40 years! It's a little pricey which makes it a special-occasion treat, not an everyday thing in our family. Which is fine because it wouldn't be so special if it were everyday. We do stop by when we're heading out of town sometimes for another treat some days though. We love this bakery because it supports a local business that has been a Bremerton icon forever, not to mention their wonderful taste. I did however give it only four stars because the customer service can more likely than not be a bit monotone and flat. My father-in-law said he likes their cake when we serve it for birthdays, but he probably won't patron them again which is very unfortunate. His reason.... he is a small business owner himself who prides himself on only shopping local establishments. We're almost forbidden to mention big box stores in his presence, lol. Anyway, he stopped in about seven years ago he said for a dozen donuts to bring to his employees. He said the service was so cold. Not icy, snappy, or rude, but just indifferent. I'm new to Washington and I've been looking for a bakery to satisfy my sweet tooth. I found this bakery through Yelp and after reading the reviews about the famous Pink Champagne cake I decided to go give it a try. The bakery was small and quaint and looked very old fashion, which I liked. The lady at the counter was extremely helpful and polite, which is always a plus in my book. Now onto the cake.. In my opinion the reviews hyped up the cake too much. It wasn't as moist as people said it was. I've tasted my share of moist cakes in the past and this was definantly not in that category, so I was actually pretty upset. I probably would have been better off baking a Pillsbury cake out of the box, those are definantly more moist than this cake was. The icing was too thick and sweet for me, I'm more interested in icing that's light and fluffy. The flavor however was different and I really liked it. Maybe I had a bad cake or maybe the cake was sitting there for too long. but I really think I paid too much for a cake that small. read more
