I'm skeptical when a restaurant self-identifies as a "gastropub". The term is overused to the point…read moreof cliche these days but in this case it seemed right. The food wasn't just the standard pub fare; everything we tried that day was excellent. I had fish tacos and French onion soup. Two flour tortillas, packed with fried haddock, coleslaw, and a spicy remoulade, served with lime wedges. The tortillas were toasted for extra flavor and held together well, easily holding the generous fish portions and wet coleslaw. The fish was fresh and the batter was light and crispy. Portion size was reasonable. The onion soup was outstanding. The broth was full-bodied and rich and seemed homemade, not from canned stock - though I can't say for sure. It was a bit salty like most, but the seasonings (I noted thyme and pepper) balanced it. The cheese on top (Swiss I think) was nicely browned, the onions sweet and caramelized, and there were plenty of toasted croutons made from a French baguette. Scallions on top added color, some crunch, and completed the dish. When I got the bill I was pleased to see the soup was only $3 not $8 as listed on the menu, because they treated it as a substitute for the fries normally served with the tacos. Which was fine as I didn't really need fries - and I had some of the wife's anyway, which were very good. The wife had The Clothier: a sandwich with marinated fried chicken, pepper jack cheese, candied jalapenos, smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, and house-made spicy ranch. Excellent. For a drink I had a Citizen's Cider on tap, one of my favorites. Beers on tap - of which there were many - and the cider are offered in 16 and 22 ounce sizes. The menu had lots of options. The expected pub standards and also some unusual items liked fried green beans, tomato artichoke bisque, and an extensive baked mac & cheese selection. The desserts included "Our Famous Twiggie", a cookie (choose from 3) topped with ice cream, two kinds of syrup, and whipped cream. The cookie is baked to order and takes 15 minutes! The interior looked really nice, but the day was so pleasant we sat outside on the street-front patio, across from the St. Albans city park. It was so pretty with the bountiful floral arrangements in the park and on the sidewalks. I know it's not the restaurant's doing, but it really contributed to the ambience. Some other points to mention: The inside walls are covered with a rotating selection of local art, with the featured artist changing periodically. I don't know if the art is for sale or for display only. And the events calendar listed "Wine Wednesday" throughout August and September: 1/2 price bottles of wine. That's an event I would support!

When we left there were plenty of seats available in the front. We certainly would have stayed and had more drinks after our meal to enjoy the music. On to the food. We got the Mac and cheese, the wrap, and a burger on a gluten free bun. We were impressed with their gluten free options and the bun was so good, my daughter was nervous it was not gluten free! But I like the atmosphere too, always filled with locals: workers on lunch break, people gathered to play trivia in the evening (sadly not in summer though). Service is always good, people are friendly, and the outdoors-themed decor is quirky and dominated by an oversized model rifle over the bar. The open room with the bar in the center means you can enjoy the ambience wherever you sit. The place feels clean, including the bathrooms which are single-use, gender-neutral with changing tables. The pub-style menu is heavy on burgers, wings, and pizzas. Also nachos, salads, fish&chips, shepherd's pie, pastas, and more. A large selection of burgers, and always a monthly burger special. This month it was the Apple Fest: with cheddar, bacon, maple cinnamon aioli, and apple slices. Interesting enough but the apples didn't really add anything. Points for creativity though. The bacon was nicely crisp. The burgers are large (8 oz) and served on a brioche bun, butter-brushed - a bit too heavily in my opinion. Cooked to your requested doneness - unusual at this level of restaurant - and correctly. Served with a side of fries: decent enough but not outstanding, with a very light cornmeal batter. What the burger entrees lack is a third item: a pickle, small side of coleslaw, etc. At least throw in a pickle wedge please. I also like the Rodeo Burger: jalapenos, french-fried onions, lettuce, cheddar, and barbecue sauce. The French Connection is interesting too. On other occasions I've tried the pizza. Good but not memorable. Definitely better than the other pizza place in town though. It's a thick crust with generous amount of cheese, ample toppings, and a sauce that tastes like more than just tomatoes. The crust isn't made in-house (I asked) but it's better than many. The french onion soup, which has been on the specials board for as long as I've been coming, is a big disappointment. Thin, metallic-tasting broth, onions cut too small, and cheese topping that isn't properly browned under the broiler. I can't understand why it's popular but I see it ordered frequently. As for drinks, it's about the beers here. There's a large selection including many drafts. Including locals from the island, nearby Stowe, and elsewhere in Vermont. As for ciders of which I'm a fan, sadly only one: Citizens United, a fairly boring choice but at least it's local. A few wines by the glass are available for the wine drinkers. Mixed drinks like margaritas are a waste: Weak on alcohol and made from overly sweet mixes. Avoid. The desserts: brownie sundaes, cheesecake, peanut butter pie, bread pudding. I've never tried them, except once: churros. Unexpected: typically found in Mexican restaurants. Definitely not recommended. Little cinnamon flavor, and a strange filling that reminded me more of a thin cannoli. One more thing before I go: They ALWAYS have help-wanted signs up and their Facebook page also mentions it frequently. And more than once I saw on their Facebook that they had to open late or close early due to to lack of staffing. I have to wonder: why do they have trouble finding and keeping staff? Is it a problem with morale or bad management? I don't know. But the staff is always pleasant and seem unstressed so if so they're doing a good job hiding it. Whatever the reason, I hope they can fix it. Short staffing and frequent turnaround is not a good thing.

Kyojin in South Miami, Canton in Coral Gables, POC in Coral Gables) but I was craving Chinese food as I had not had any in so long. Lucky Buffet did not disappoint. They had sit down dining service as well as to go service. I am not sure if they deliver. If they did that would be amazing! But it was pretty busy which is always a good sign for a restaurant because it means they are doing good business and there is a demand for it. I ended up eating with my eyes and then my stomach because i filled 2 to go containers with a variety/assortment of foods like General Tso's chicken (my favorite), chicken & broccoli, crunchy and flavorful snap peas, crispy wonton noodles, very breaded/fluffy battered chicken tenders, and some vegetable fried rice that i doused in the General Tsao's sauce). I also got some of these Buttered scalloped potatoes which O-M-G were so darn good. They also had sliced onion mixed into the batch and no complaints there. It came out to a total of $38. There was a sign that said it was like $7.95 for pound of food and I figured I would splurge since I am not sure when I would be back there. I also liked how they had fortune cookies sitting on display in the middle of the place for guests to take. I took about six lol I can't resist a good old fashioned fortune cookie:) If I ever happen to be walking by again, I would consider it again, but it is a lot of food. So you have to go on an empty stomach and also try not to over indulge or else you will have tummy issues. Chinese food is notorious for having MSG, but I am not sure if they use that there. I will say that they had a pretty decent dessert bar and ice cream selection. The people of Saint Albans are "lucky" to have this restaurant in their midsts. Also parking is pretty ample for those that have vehicles and the restaurant itself seemed pretty clean and well organized. If buffet items got low, they immediately would replenish them. The food was hot and ready to go. A plus was the little keychains being sold at the front at the counter. I had to get a Stitch one because I love the Stitch character. He's so cute ^_^ They also had a Spiderman one and Hello Kitty one so any fans of those characters would be pleasantly surprises and amused to see them being sold there once you check out and pay. Highly recommend this place.
