I've been here before plenty of times. Some good some bad, mostly tolerable, sometimes unacceptable. I mostly use the app and pick up at counter, as I would never decide to eat in a place I find constantly dirty. The food, especially during college season can be very disappointing. Just ordered today (October 2025) and my "deluxe" mccrispy had 2 pieces of lettuce on it, with a dab of the sauce and tomatoes falling off. Chocolate milkshake that tastes like straight whip cream. I've order a Big Mac in the past that miraculously had no patties on it, and instead had triple the cheese. All of which I sat waiting for for 40 minutes. The staff, while usually non-existent, are atleast understanding. From the looks of it, a high turnover rate paired with the influx of some 35,000 hungry college kids has dramatically impacted the ability of this location to perform, though other McDonalds in Ames, I've had a much better experience with food and service wise. Consensus: don't eat here, atleast during classes, eat at the other McDonald's if you're forced to eat a Big Mac. read more

I try it, so you know whether to buy it. Today's try is the small Dulce DeLeche frappe. Omdog! SOOOO GOOD! That said, prepare for a really rich, high calorie, but also very tasty, drink. The two reasons for me getting the small-less sugar and I don't want to be up all night(I got this at 3 pm). I also got a food order here today. It was hot, fresh, tasty and made my 13 yo a very happy boy. The McNuggets were crisp outside and juicy inside. He gobbled them right up. As for the service that I've gotten here(I usually go to the west side McDonald's)-the employees here are stellar at their jobs, from the few times I've come here over the last month. Always friendly and helpful. I've gotten complete orders every time in the recent past. I will be placing orders here, if I'm on the east side of town, as they do a much better job of getting the orders complete-not missing dips, full orders, etc. The last thing I want to do is to have to drive all the way back to a McDonald's, just to pick up what they may have failed to give me-this place has been perfect so far. A little exposition here, I worked at a McDonald's from winter 2019 - summer 2023. So I know how to handle customer service and how the system works at McDonald's and everything. So me and my 2 other friends pulled into the drive through. They were pretty busy so expected a wait, that wasn't a problem. I asked them if we could pick up 2 mobile orders and place an order there at the location. I know they normally aren't allowed to place more than 2 multi-orders at a time. They said they couldn't, whatever, not a problem we just picked up the 2 mobile orders and expected to just drive around again to place the third order. We eventually made our way up to the window, then the employee opened the window and asked if we only had one order and I said yes. This part is my fault I didn't really comprehend the question and didn't think before answering. He went and grabbed the first order, handed it to me, and then I said, "Sorry I also have the second mobile order." And he says, "Why do you think I asked if you had 2 orders." Excuse me? Me personally, I would have never treated a customer like that even if I was busy and having a bad day. I feel like he might not have been properly trained in customer service and how to respond to people. The worst part is, he was a manager! He was wearing the manager shirt and I am so mad that I didn't look at his name to properly report him. Mobile ordered 2 McFlurrys on a Sunday evening several hours before close. The app said to pick up inside the restaurant but the doors were locked. Went through the drive through as we had already paid. 3 cars were there other then us. Once we got to the order screen they asked if we'd mobile ordered and then told us to pull up to the second window. We ended up stopping at the first window due to the cars in front of us and the window was open with an employee there who said nothing to us while we were stopped for 2 minutes. Then as soon as we pull forward he yells "hey!" And asked if we had a mobile order which we responded yes. Then he told us to pull forward which we did. The dude at the second window had no idea what our order was but eventually made our mc flurries then we were on our way. It was getting better here then all of the sudden it got worse than before. They should just close this location down. I don't mind paying more for my food so employees can get paid more but I would at least expect the food to be correct and edible. I got home there were only 4 nuggets in the box, the chicken was so dry and overcooked I could not eat it, one hamburger had no condiments on it and the other one was just a bun! Me and my distinguished associates entered the establishment on a foggy Saturday evening. After ordering some ice cream treats from the automated kiosks, we went to identify a suitable lounging location. Alas EVERY single table had yet to be cleaned from the dinner rush 3 hours prior. No complaints about the workers but this is possibly the worst run McDonalds I have ever been to and it's embarrassing. They close one lane at night and cause a huge back up. Have insane wait times. They sometimes only let you pay chase but they put up no signs for it so you get to the front of the line to find out. The only reason this location hasn't gotten shut down is that Ames barely has any 24/7 places. Management needs to put more people on night shift or needs to start pulling their own weight. Honestly pathetic. Like I said the servers are always nice and just working with what they got and management needs to make some changes to support their workers. read more

I decided to come through the drive through after work today and went into the curved lane to the left. I was 3rd in line to get my order. They then took 4 other cars in the other lane before getting to mine. then took another 5 minutes to even understand my simple order. when I was at the 2nd window, they asked me to wait in the "reserved drive thru" spots. I waited for over 15 minutes while another car that came after me (at least 3 cars behind) for theirs first. To top it off, they forgot my drink. I ordered a couple of cheeseburgers and an oreo mcflurry through the drive-thru and I paid and waited for around 10 minutes for the girl to give me my debit card back. I actually had to ask for her to give it back to me, so that was awkward.. then a few more minutes go by, probably another 5-10, then she comes back and tells me that while she was making my mcflurry, the ice cream machine shut off so I couldn't have my mcflurry that I had already paid for. I said ok, so what do we do now? She said she needed to get her boss so I could get my refund back on my card. I waited another 5-10 minutes for her boss to come refund me, she was visibly upset that she had to do this and wasn't very friendly during the process. So once I was finally freed from the McDonald's drive thru prison, I flew over to Dairy Queen for a blizzard. Took less than 10 minutes, as it should on a slow night. The store wasn't busy either, and I've experienced other long wait times at this location as well so I'm wondering if there's a staffing issue going on. I understand staff come and go, but when you're a store on one of the most busiest roads in town, I'd expect some decent service, but whatever, I don't own the store or manage it, I'm just an average customer giving my input on my bad experience :) read more

First of all, we walk in and this man takes our order and I can't understand a word he's saying. I asked for a smoothie and he took 4 minutes looking for it and then when he couldn't he told me it was unavailable! Another employee came in to help and turns out the smoothie was available! A couple minutes later a different worker says sorry for the wait what can I get you we tell them our order again. I asked for a Shamrock shake that shows up on the menu and they say they don't have them. Then I ask for an Oreo McFlurry they say they don't have it ether. I just ask for McNuggets and a Dr.Pepper. Worst experience at any fast food restaurant, ever. Came out of the bathroom to slide across an unmarked wet floor and hit hard. When I ask to speak with management this smart mouth woman sassed that she was "like" a manager, so when I told her I wanted to speak to the real manager, she huffed off calling me all kinds of names. After 10 minutes or so, the "real" manager came out of wherever it was she was hiding and just scribbled down my name and number on the back of scratch paper. A gentleman who had witnessed it all told her their water had grease in it and it was slick all around their counter too, she poo poo'd it and he said he was calling the main headquarters. I gave up and left. Now my left leg is scrapped up, my right arm and rib cage are also bruised, my neck is tight and hard to turn. My two year old granddaughter and I showed up here on a Friday at 11:15 a.m. for lunch. The place was a zoo of people standing around waiting for their food because they had only one person working one cash register. We waited, waited and waited to place our order and then waited, waited and waited for our food. When we finally found a seat, they had a TV literally blaring a soap that wasn't appropriate for kids to hear or see. Come on!!! Hire some additional workers who actually want to do their jobs, turn the TV off and run this place like a FAST food restaurant is supposed to be run. read more
