Bedford Sales & Outdoors - Larry Nixon

Bedford Sales & Outdoors

I have been dealing with Bedford sales for many years mostly for parts and maintenance products …read more Sam (the owner) and John (lead tech) have always gone above and beyond to help and answer any questions I've had . I made the mistake of purchasing my boat from another dealer , Sam has always treated me as if I bought it from him when any service or warranty repair was needed . They know ranger boats better than anyone due to being a ranger dealer for many many years . I won't make the same mistake again ... When it's time for a new boat Bedford will get my business !

Bedford Sales & Outdoors which is recently under new ownership needs vast improvement in the…read moreService area. I needed my thirty year Johnson 4.5 HP outboard serviced, as i have done every year Spring. (My previous tech retired so I though I would try Bedford.) I called this AM and spoke to the receptionist and told her the age and the brand. She was polite and said she would have to check with Service. She returned to the phone and told me it would be no problem for them. I had to drive an hour to Bedford only to be told by their Service that they would not work on a Johnson that old. I asked if they could at least change the lower unit lube and they suggested I just do it myself. So on my return trip home, I called the receptionist and she remembered very well her affirmation to me that they would work on my outboard! She said she would make it right and put me on hold. She got the owner to talk to me and the owner said there is nothing they can do for me. I'm 72 years old and this is the first bad review I have posted to social media.

I never thought I would ever write a negative review about this place. I've stored my boat there…read moresince 2014. I've always had it stored over the winter and usually stored it there during the remainder of the year (in & out service, mostly in as we've taken in out less than 4 times a year on average. The motor has less than 35 hours on it and it's 10 years old). I usually work with Keith who is a super nice guy. I can't say the same about the owner. However, I had a not so pleasant experience with them recently. Last fall I dropped my boat off at their shop because it wouldn't start. I was told their mechanic spent a couple hours on it, could not find the problem. They told me the motor started (but didn't run well) but only when bypassing the ignition and wiring harness. I was told it was probably the harness and I'd have to take it to a Sylvan dealer. I was charged $200. I spent hours looking for a problem, a break in the wire, corrosion, etc. and didn't find anything. I contacted the closest dealer and since they don't stock the harness I had to pay for it in advance, about $425. After calling the Michigan (2 1/2 hours away) dealer I bought the boat from I decided to take it there. I was told it probably wasn't the harness since the boat is in almost new condition, only 30 hours on the motor. I took it there earlier this year. They found the issue in less than 10 minutes! It was the kill switch, a $30 part! They told me the motor ran very well. They checked everything over, repaired a few minor issues including replacing the horn. They charged me $385. I called the local dealer to inform them I didn't need the harness and I was charged a 20% restocking fee (approx. $85). So in total I incurred close to $700 for what turned out to be a $35 part!! I informed Keith and Steve of this and they offered $100 off winter storage! No apology! Absolutely ridiculous! Not only did they not find the simple issue, they told me it had to be the wiring harness. If I owned the shop I would have been embarrassed! I would have apologized , at minimum given a full refund or 50% off winter storage or maybe even winter storage on me! But not this place! I was a good customer for 10 years , spent thousands on storage , parts and some minor labor. Greed is a terrible thing. If this is how they treat a good customer of 10 years, I can only imagine how they're going to treat a new customer.

It can be hard to find outboard motor parts in my part of northern Illinois. You can always order…read moreparts online, but only if you have time for shipping. I called several marinas and nobody had my needed impeller in stock. But Heritage did! Its a pretty old business in a building that could use a little work, but having the part you need when you need it for a fair price is all that matters, really.

I took it out of mothballs and wanted to get it tuned up and running, but was having trouble getting it started. There aren't many shops that work on old outboards, so after a couple of calls, I found these guys, who claim that old motors are their specialty. I drove an hour to take them my boat, and they said they'd get back to me in a couple of days. The place is an old cinderblock building, with old stuff piled everywhere - Dirty, disorganized, and totally run-down. I should have run for it then... A week went by before they finally called to say that my starter was bad, and that they couldn't even determine if the motor would run until they replaced it, which would cost "around 5-600$. This is an expensive horse you're riding", the owner told me. Their cost for a starter - $239.00. I had a spare starter which they refused to use. I found an NOS one online for $150, but they wouldn't use that either. Finally I said never mind, and they began to call me and bug me about coming to get my boat. I commute 3 hours a day during the week, which I explained to them when I dropped it off, and said I'd be back on the next weekend to get my boat. I got 2 calls in 2 days telling me it had to go. Finally I got down there and picked it up, and they charged me $89 for labor just to (supposedly) determine that the starter was bad. I also got a flat tire from pulling into their junk-strewn yard. So next I took it to a trusted member of the Antique Outboard Club, which I only found existed after all this. The guy they recommended spent a day on it, charged me $125 to get it running perfectly, and said that there was NOTHING wrong with the starter AT ALL! Once it was cleaned and tuned, it was FINE. "An expensive horse", eh, boys? Nonsense. And when the screw holding the case was removed, dirt fell out, indicating that Heritage probably hadn't even OPENED the motor to make the misdiagnosis! So, I'm only out $89, but if I had trusted these cranky old shysters, I could have spend well over $600 for who-knows-what! DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE with your vintage or antique boat! Go to the Antique Outboard Motor Club and find a reputable mechanic!
