The place is nice looking but way overpriced. Way way way overpriced. It's a nice place if you're getting info a gift for a special someone or going on a date but besides that not really worth it. I got a Banana cream soda because I could get a large for 5 bucks which I think is reasonable for a custom house made soda. BUT they fill the whole cup with ice so I only go like 4 gulps out of it. The vibes are different once you see something on the counter where the price is placed so you can see it until you pick it up and go " holy shit that's too much " but besides from the weird trans and feminine men they have, and the overpriced candy there are no black people because it's too expensive and not a good deal. read more

Came in for their annual candy Cane making class, where you see how they make their Candy cane's, then you are given a small piece of the candy to make your own "creation", which is neat. read more

Beware, you won't leave empty handed! McCord's Candies is a iconic little candy that has been located in downtown Lafayette since 1947. Originally owned by Ivy McCord, the shop expanded from Candy to luncheonette with handmade sodas. The store thrived catering to the business crowd downtown. Ivy sold the store in 1974 and the little shop has changed hands a number of times. In 2022, Billie and Angie Pattengale became the current owners. The adorable red and white awning and sign draws you in. Inside, the original Candy cases from the early 1900's stand filled with beautiful chocolates and candies. I was hypnotized by all the chocolate. I came to grab a sandwich because I heard the egg salad is excellent, but they were out. The clerks offered me one of there hand made sodas, but I regrettably passed. They make them in all flavors. The clerks are friendly and engaging. The candy looked good but I was trying to watch my sugar intake. The clerk told that they carry a number of sugar free options. So I snagged some sugar-free almond clusters. The clusters were really, really good. They have a vintage mid century shop upstairs with cute dining area that overlooks the candy shop downstairs. Interesting art hangs on the wall. I'm going back to try one of the sodas. And next time, I'm taking my granddaughters. read more

Sadly, they were out of egg salad sandwiches, but I did get to buy my Swedish candy like Bubs. The inside of this store is so adorable. Lots to see and choose from. Staff and friendly and helpful. I was a bit bummed because they had less candy cane tours this year than usual, but I also understand that the owners need balance. Super friendly staff, especially the owner. The shop is cute. I am So glad they kept some of the old time feel while adding some of their own kitsch. I got a bag of salt water taffy which is really good and not overly sticky. My friend got a sugar free vanilla soda and she loved it. Definitely a place we will return. read more

This old time candy shop is the perfect place to satisfy that sweet tooth. They offer all different kinds of candies from homemade chocolates to gummies. All the candies in the case are sold by the pound unless otherwise specified. Additionally the soda fountain is always a hit as it is made the old fashioned way. Highly recommend a vanilla coke although there are many options to choose from. They also serve food and usually have lunch specials. There is a small sitting area towards the back past the counters if you are looking to stay a while. Definitely not a place to pass up if you are strolling by. Stopped in on a rainy Friday afternoon for something to drink and was promptly greeted as I walked in the door. While my Cherry Coke was being made with the authentic soda fountain tools, I walked down the aisle and immediately noticed the buckeyes!!! The young lady asked me if I wanted dark or milk chocolate. I didn't know dark chocolate buckeyes were an option!! My drink was great and the buckeyes were all eaten before we came home. I always enjoy my visits to McCord's. read more

So A Muslim ; an Afro American and a white lady walk in a candy store. Sounds like a joke starting huh... that's where it gets interesting. So I had a lovely afternoon with friends this afternoon. However, we had a little bit of downer in customer service at McCords Candy downtown Lafayette. We are all in customer service so we notice these things. I asked her if they were closing soon. She said "soon". She then said pretty abruptly "we arent serving food!" I said "we aren't eating food". The service was very poor and unfriendly. They lost two potential good candy sales. But the lady working really turned us off. She didn't even try to help either one of us. When our 3rd friend did buy something the associate basically left her at the register to finish her sale on her own. They still hadn't closed an hour after as we were leaving downtown. I was informed by a friend of mine that since I was in Lafayette for something else, I should visit McCord Candies because they make the very best candy canes in the whole world. First, I was blown away by the magnificent architectural gem that houses the candy factory, a three story, Second Empire brick building with a striking Mansard roof, ornate pedimented attic windows and tall, arched second story windows and other architectural delights. (It's on the National Register of Historic Places.) It stands out in a downtown full of eye-candy buildings, but speaking of eye candy, the red and white, candy cane striped awnings, bright red façade and red-lettered sign make McCord Candies stand out and easy to find! As you enter, you are confronted with an old-fashioned soda fountain where you can order the high-calorie delight of your choice. Opposite are long glass display cases, filled with a myriad of goodies that make choosing difficult - or easy, if money is no object. A small, café seating area can be found in back. I read a comment on FB that McCord's was struggling due to the economic shutdown. So I put out the word to a few folks and hopefully they ordered as well. I live in North Carolina; however, I'm originally from Dayton, IN just outside of Lafayette. My mom used to drop my friend and I off at the library nearby then we'd often come to McCord's to get a treat. I have a lot of fond memories of this place. I purchased an order and had it shipped to me. The order came in a timely manner and in good condition. The packaging had cute boxes with the storefront on it. I bought some cinnamon bears (they weren't as spicy cinnamon as I remember), some lemon drop hard candy (they weren't as tart as I remember), some cherry tart candy, and my favorite was the really cool Purdue Chocolates ! The chocolate was really good quality and the Purdue symbols on top were awesome ! I would definitely order these Purdue chocolates again. I also got a 4 pack of "eggs" that were marshmallow and carmel. I was confused though because they were not egg-shaped... they were just normal round-ish chocolate shaped. Really friendly staff, a great selection of candies (chocolate and others), and even ice cream options. The chocolates were running on the higher end of the cost spectrum at $24 per pound (I get them for around $20 in the places I pick chocolates around Indy.) I went with a half pound and got 15 pieces to fit in the box. I was able to make the selections too, so I didn't have to settle for something I wasn't a fan of. I liked that they had all the options clearly labeled (I took pics as I selected so I could identify them when I got home!) While there, I also tried a single scoop of Death by Chocolate ice cream. Nice flavor with flavor "beans" of chocolate, but the ice cream itself wasn't as creamy/fatty as places that make you swoon while eating it. Iconic Purdue staple. Walking in you feel like you're taken back in time. They have every chocolate and truffle flavor you can imagine as well as old fashion candy. Our go to is a 16 piece chocolate box for $14. You can mix and match any of the chocolates on display as part of your 16 pieces. While at Purdue I always made it a priority to stop by. Now since graduating it's still a must stop when I'm by campus. read more

My friend, a resident of Lafayette, brought me here eager to visit under the new ownership. We were immediately drawn to the cases of chocolate, in particular these beautiful truffles with tulips on them. I'm a tad unsure which candies are made in the store, as when I asked the woman behind the counter who painted the truffles, she said she bought them that way. Still, there are plenty of chocolates to choose from! Both of us both an assortment in individual chocolates. While those truffles were the prettiest to look at, I enjoyed the milk chocolate-covered caramels sprinkled with sea salt best. You can't go wrong with that confection! What a treat! The $4 candy cane tour is 45 minutes well spent! McCords is one of only 4 places in the US where candy canes are made by hand. You get to shape your own cane on the tour! Very sweet diversion after a concert at the Long Center down the street! The candy cane hot chocolate is excellent while you wait for the tour in this hundred year old location. I think they also have actual food but we loved the candy and the piano player too much to think about that. read more

Today while visiting Lafayette, we stopped by McCord's candies and ice cream and ordered one scoop of ice cream and a root beer float. We were very disappointed. The scoop of ice cream was half the size you would normally get at any other ice cream shop. And the root beer float had no root beer flavor at all! They made it with soda water with a little bit a root beer flavoring - it was horrible. We then asked for a refund. I think the problem is the highschooler's that are working there don't know what they're doing. The management team needs to train them better. What a fun environment with so many unique goodies. I love the attention to detail with all the yummy gift arrangements and old school candy items that I grew up with. I also never really cared too much for soda, but I got talked into a strawberry spritzer, and I now need to get my fix once a week! My fav chocolate is the salted carmel, which pairs nicely with my spritzer! A small town gem. Still rolling candy canes and crafting chocolates by hand, McCord's is a step into the 1950's. The variety of the chocolates is huge, but the quality of the chocolate itself seems to be a bit sub-par. They're not bad, just more sugary than something like Fannie May. More sugarry, less chocolatey. Not my preference, but maybe yours. Certainly worth a try. read more

I got a quick stop here this winter when in Lafayette on business. I had read about McCord Candies a few years ago and had to get some! I dashed in quickly while parked in the short term parking and filled an assortment box to take home. Of course I also had to get a few bags of candy cane pieces to crunch away on the drive home! Their candy canes and chocolate candies are all so delicious and fresh. I am just a little addicted to the candy canes! There is a nice menu if you chose lunch. Their homemade candy canes are special. The tour is something everyone should do once - there is something about curling your own cane. As an ex resident of Lafayette I remember buying candy and candy canes at McCords for years. I returned to Lafayette for a visit and found that McCords had sold the business but that the new owners retained the recipes and would continue the tradition. However, when I ordered candy canes one Christmas online I was very disappointed as they just didn't taste the same. They were chalky and crumbled and didn't have that wonderful vanilla taste I remembered and loved! I thought maybe I just got a bad batch but my son sent me some this year and they are the same as when I ordered them a few years ago! I guess some things just never stay the same! read more

We had a wonderful time on the candy cane tour and enjoyed the staff who held the tour. They were informative and it was an enjoyable process. The candy canes are amazing too! We had a bit of a hard time with communication about the tour... I guess you are just supposed to show up and wait for the next tour but with little kids, we were hoping to go at a scheduled time or know how long we would have to wait for the next tour. I would give 5 stars if the tour times were a bit more organized or at least the process was detailed a bit more on the website...then we would have known what to expect. read more
