The thing to get at McCord Candies is the marshmallow Coke, apparently. This is what I was told by…read morea local who I was visiting with, who chose, as his treat, a soda over the thousand other sweet things available at this old-fashioned candy store. The sodas are served with rabbit-turd ice (unquestionably the best kind of ice). And they are made with real syrups and stirred together, like they used to do back in the olden days when the world was black and white, and the people behind the counter creating your drink were called soda jerks. You can also order a soda with other flavors stirred in, like butterscotch, chocolate, cucumber, cherry, lavender and the like, plus phosphates, floats, malts, Italian cream sodas, dirty sodas, freezes, tea, lemonade, ice cream scoops, sundaes and shakes. If it's sweet and you can drink it or let it melt in your mouth, they can probably make it here for you behind the soda counter at McCord Candies. You'll also find candy and chocolates, of every variety and permutation imaginable. Many of the candies and chocolates are made in-house, like their candy canes, which you can see being made right in front of you around the holidays. If you like sweets, you will find something here. Take your goodies to go, or you can go upstairs and enjoy them where there are a few tables and a nice view of the candy store below. There are also some vintage clothing and knickknacks for sale that you can peruse.

But then mine eyes doth glanceth upon the words "Brisket Birria Sandwich" on the menu, and I had to pivot. I'm so glad that I went with my heart. The Brisket Birria Sandwich at Ripple & Company consists of smoked brisket, white cheddar, red onions and cilantro, all melted and pressed between a roll, and served with birria consomme. You dip the sandwich in the consomme and eat, kind of like a French dip. Dip and eat, dip and eat, until you can't dip and eat anymore, either because it's all gone or because your stomach is about to burst. It's a big sandwich, and it is also served with incredibly delicious fries, which doesn't help with the stomach bursting thing. This whole meal is amazing and I would visit Ripple & Company just to eat this exact thing again. I visited with people who ate at Ripple & Company quite frequently, and they got their favorites: The Black & Gold Pub Burger, and the Cajun Shrimp Tacos, with a side of roasted Brussels sprouts. Everyone enjoyed everything. As a nice surprise, one of my dining mates ordered the Smokehouse Nachos for us to share, as if we didn't have enough food. But there's a different chamber in my stomach for chips and nachos, and luckily, that chamber was empty, so it worked out just fine. The nachos are great, with tender pieces of shredded pork, pickled jalapenos, a vegetable mix, green onions and chipotle ranch drizzled on top. The service here is great: We were seated right away, ordered right way, and our food came out within a good amount of time. The decor is car and transportation themed, with traffic signs and hubcaps hung up on the walls. Very fun.

The spoon bread was not good. AND, not that I'm counting this against them, but how are you gonna sell me spoon bread and not give me a spoon? Lol. Shrimp tacos were also meh. Very bitter. Shrimp was a good size, but lacking something in the flavor department. The fries were good though. My friend complained about her burger being good, but excessively greasy. Sure enough, I saw a pool of grease on her plate that was dripping out of her burger. I wish I had taken a picture

You get the dang salted chocolate chip cookie; plus a honey, fig and pecan scone; plus a pecan sable-type cookie, just to round everything out. I couldn't help myself! There are just too many delicious-looking things at this bakery. The delicious things were being made right there behind the counter, so everything was fresh. They also had cupcakes, frosted cookies, rugelach, baklava, sandwich cookies and biscotti. The salted chocolate chip cookie was indeed amazing, but I really loved the pecan sable cookie, which crumbled nicely and melted in my mouth. I love a good sandy cookie. The people behind the counter were friendly and patient while I made my very important choices of what to get. The bakery is cute, with plants everywhere and a couple of tables, in case you want to stay and eat there. But I got my goodies to go.

Today I came back to buy cookies for my family. Their Christmas cookies are gorgeous, huge and delicious. I really love the fact they are not really sweet. You can tell the products here are made with high quality ingredients and care to produce a high quality product. Their regular cookies and scones are excellent too. You cannot get baked goods like this at your regular bakery or grocery store. Stop by their little shop in lovely downtown Lafayette Indiana. It's a hidden gem. While you're there check out all the other fabulous locally owned small businesses in the downtown area. Lafayette is so lucky to have wonderful small businesses like Scones and Doilies!
