On our way back home we dashed into the best local restaurant in McClellanville. The outside may not look trendy but there's a reason for that. This is down home cooking and comfort. Everyone knows everyone. The regulars don't even have to order because the cook is already working on it. If they don't know you they still treat you like a regular. The service is top notch and some of the sweetest people. Next time I am passing through I will stop again. The biscuits and gravy is well worth the trip. Stopped by for breakfast yesterday after the Land Sea Market. Had not even realized they served breakfast, thought it was just lunch and Friday night dinner. I had the pancakes with bacon. My husband had the cheese omelette with bacon, potatoes and rye toast. Coffee was very good, not bitter at all. Everything was delicious. Service was great. The desserts, some made in house, looked amazing. Will be coming back to try those along with dinner, which is served are fridays only 5-8. Owner is also the chef. Cute little, local place. Stopped in this morning for breakfast, first time in. Service was excellent, the food, even better. Biscuits with smoked sausage patties and sausage gravy topped with over easy eggs, can't be beat. The home fried potatoes, a side that most places don't pay attention to, someone in the kitchen knows how to cook them right, crisp and flavorful. This place is fantastic! This diamond in the rough has wonderful country cooking and seafood. I had the She Crab Soup bowl and the chef offered me Sherry to add to it. I've driven by this tiny hole in the wall place in McClellanville for years and never took a second look. One day I noticed it on Yelp and saw the reviews so I figured I'd make it a point to head out there sometime to check it out. I was on my way up to Myrtle Beach and decided to stop in. I didn't realize but they were just about to close as I saw the hours on the door as I walked in. I asked if they were open and the woman was so pleasant and said she would definitely take us. Usually you'd get an eye roll and silverware slammed down on your table for that move but, she was genuinely happy to serve us. I was thinking more about brunch but, they serve brunch on Sundays and keep normal breakfast/lunch hours every other day. They were on their lunch menu so I opted for the flounder basket. For lunch, it was a huge portion and well worth the price. Something about the tartar sauce made it extra delicious but, I couldn't quite figure out what it was. It feels like a family run place and the service was excellent... similar to being in your friends moms kitchen for lunch. I can't wait to check out brunch here on a Sunday. Definitely worth taking the nice drive up to McClellanville for something different than your typical downtown brunch spots. read more

Well, here was a hidden gem, and without the wonders of modern tech we would not have known. This place is a rustic slice out of time. Atmosphere is spot on. Friendly service, great food. Grits were just great, sausage gravy primo. They slap this food together in a granny Clampett kitchen, cast iron and all. We were there early weekday, not busy, just a couple yokels getting java and grub. Nice overall experience, will definitely go again. Prices were a bit high, but really worth it. read more

First of all, the Yelp or GPS directions for here are incorrect. They are not off by much, just about a quarter mile, and the correct side of the road. The atmosphere is cheerful and homey, and everything inside is attractive and very clean. I ordered crab cakes, which came with two sides. The crab cakes were delicious--perfectly seasoned and delightfully old-school. I want to return to try the She Crab soup and mac & cheese. I highly recommend McClellanville Diner! read more

A real find on the side of the road. Blink and you'll miss it. Finding it coincided with our need for coffee and eggs en route to Myrtle Beach. The restaurant was simultaneously grotty and clean with an outside toilet and a steady stream of locals coming for the company, the coffee and the latest gossip I expect. I really liked the idea of a communal table where random folks sat around and shot the breeze. Anyway, the food. I have to say the corned beef hash here was probably among the best I'd ever had. Coffee as excellent and copious. The eggs were great and the French toast judged pretty damn good by my traveling companion. All this for less than 25 bucks. Cannot be beaten. Quaint and quirky little shack w/ decent southern food. Why 1 Star? My friends and I were stared down by the all white clientele and all white staff. Two different groups of guests made remarks towards us. Our waiter even sat with one of the groups for a friendly chat...they ALL just stared over at us w/ nasty looks. It was unreal! My wife and I are Latino, our friends are Black and Asian. We felt very uncomfortable here. I suppose if you look different than the poor dusty white folk out here - don't bother giving this place your business. Yikes. read more

So in appearance it is a 1960s road-side diner. And in fact when you enter that notion remains. Family own and run. Die-hard long term waitstaff and food served up quick and hot. Limited seating, busy at peek times. Restroom is out the front door and to the left. Single seater and likely not ADA compliant. Now for the food: When you stand the menu items coming out of the kitchen against any hi-end eatery in down-town Charleston or even Mt. Pleasant... well.... you are getting equal high quality food, in taste, texture and quantity BUT at a far lower cost. The crab cakes I ordered came in a pair that were almost 50% larger in size than anything else offered on the peninsula. More crab than filler and bursting with flavor. I have had only one set of crab cakes that was better and that was prepared at Jean Louise in Savannah by an executive chef (who once was Donald Trumps personal chef in the 90's). The menu if full of traditional Southern Comfort Food items. Sides are daily specials on a chalk board and not one was a disappointment. What a gem! McClellanville is such a great spot, and the McClellanville Diner is a must go! Our waitress was very friendly, and flthe food...Yum! I had the crab cakes, collards and lima beans. The crab cakes were excellent, more crab than breading (the way they're supposed to be!!). Collards were some of the best I've had. My husband got the fried shrimp and oyster plate. Oysters were juicy and good size. And the she crab soup...so good. The McClellanville Diner is definitely a hole in the wall, which is exactly what I look for anywhere we go. This place is awesome! It may not appear that way from the outside, but the food is excellent and very reasonably priced. The salads were fresh with homemade Thousand Island dressing. The she crab soup was amazing! My wife had the fried shrimp platter and my son said it was the best he'd ever tasted. I got the flounder sandwich and my son got the fried grouper. All of the sides are fresh and homemade. Even the kids chicken tenders that need daughter ordered were fabulous! The folks here were also very courteous and did a great job serving us! Good home cooking. This is a roadside diner and the building is old, but it has a clean dining area and enough for about 30 - 40 people. You don't get processed food here. They serve local South Carolina seafood. They have hamburgers, fried steak, veggies, homemade mac & cheese. Some of the best shrimp and crabs are cooked here. And dessert. She-crab soup was oh-so-splendid, grits are perfect, tons of breakfast and lunch specials (a little bit of oyster shell in the oyster benedict = authentic) and the service is fast and friendly. Passed by this diner quite a few times before I knew it existed. In fact, I keyed in 'restaurant' and 'diner' in my GPS, with no results. I found this gem by combing the highway looking for someplace to eat, rather than a Subway in a gas station. SO happy I found it. We ordered breakfast; my dad had the ham breakfast, and I the biscuits and gravy. Both were especially good. We will definitely be coming back to explore more of their menu. Great service.
