It's very rare that I can get off work in time to make it there before they close to pick up gravel or any other soil needs that I may have. They close at 4:20 PM and I showed up at 4:15 PM and they were already closed. I asked the guy if I could just buy a yard of gravel and he said enough we're closed. I said it's not even 4:20pm yet. When I showed early on a Saturday all of my questions were answered by the office staff. They typically only take delivery orders by phone but because no one else was waiting they did offer to take mine. They made recommendations on what product to order as well as the amount needed. I needed 7 -8 cubic yards of 5/8 gravel but they advised 10 worked out to a better deal. Every time I called the stars was patient and helpful. The delivery was seamless and the driver tried his best to place the gravel where I wanted it so I could still close my gate. I appreciated his attempt and transparency ash's was able to get my gate closed. read more

So. I ordered 12 yards of gravel at this place for my uncle's house that he just bought. And I paid everything $458.43. They put me on the schedule for the next day. When the gravel was delivered the diver popped a tired and he got mad and left the side without leaving the gravel. I called them and the lady who answered the phone said that the driver was the owner and she couldn't do anything about. She gave me his phone number and I called him he said that I had to pay for his tires in order to get my gravel. I was like wtf it ain't my fault your damm ass doesn't know how to drive. Anyways he never gave me my money back and literally took a whole family's food money. But it's okay cuz everything goes and come. I hope he gets COVID or something worst than that maybe some cancer could be good for him. read more

Worst place to get topsoil I have ever see, I went and got 2 yards since that's what I needed. Wasn't expecting to pay roughly 20 dollars a yard for dirt that when it dried it became hard like concrete. Wouldn't use this place ever Again for dirt. I ordered at the yard house Monday and got my delivery Tuesday morning. The gal in the yard shack was friendly and helpful when I had questions about the best product to use. A different gal was even looking for a bag to give a different customer a sample of bark to make sure he got it right. A SCAM COMPANY!!!! Husband ordered gravel to be delivered. Arrived and popped their tire, and they blamed the customer for their popped tire. Claiming they won't give us the gravel unless we paid for their tire as well, which we have no control over how they popped their tires. They won't refund the money that was paid to them. What a scam and a shame!!! Talked to owner on the phone they were angry because they popped their tire and "REALLY DEMANDED" us the customers to pay for them. People who takes advantage of people should never be supported. This really happened, the person on phone was angry claiming " he didn't care if we called the cops" for them ripping people off. I bought a couple yards of what the man described as "topsoil" last summer. I found this "topsoil" to be full of small rocks and sand. On order I had explained that this was to repair my front yard and was assured it would be just fine .. NOT ... sand and small rocks ! Buyer beware. I expected pretty good dirt but when I got it spread out I found this was the worst. Now they tell me have better soil I should have bought garden soil !! No problem I'll just go remove the 2 yards I just spread out on my yard - Right ! Bottom line - see it yourself don't take their word for it .. good luck. read more

Have purchased rock in the past here. That endeavor went well. About three weeks ago our landscaper suggested he purchase our top mulch from them. So, we agreed and he bought the mulch and spread it. Next day it rain. The spread mulch became thick and hard in the flower beds. When we walked on it, there where no foot prints. That hard. Solid hard. Took the hoe to it and now we have chunks of garbage mulch decomposing in our front yard. The rain exposed the white, red, blue plastic pipe chips, and the shredded plastic bags that make up this mulch. The worst mulch. Who puts plastic into their landscape. We phone McClain's to be reimburse for product, they sent us to the supplier. Nice guy, but he said he just purchases the products and sells it to McClains. We recalled McClains and they say to bring the receipt in. Now it it 3 weeks past purchase and who keeps a receipt that long. Not my landscape guy. Got the run around for three weeks, and still have plastic coating mulch in my flower beds. Isn't it illegal to litter in Washington. My front yard is filled with litter. read more

I almost took a star off for two reasons - the website could be more useful (especially pricing info) and the website said they were closed Sundays during football season which started today, and they weren't. Good news for me since I only had truck access that day, but confusing as Facebook seemed to back up that they wouldn't be open. My partner and I drove in, paid for a cubic yard of 50/50 mix, and before we could walk the 20 feet to the truck and spread the tarp out in the truck bed, the guy was loaded up and waiting to dump it in the bed. I just moved so I'm planting late in the season and I can't tell how it's going to work out, but in the entire batch of dirt I dealt with today, I saw one small twig and no rocks at all, not even a pebble. Like the person before me, I wish I could give a negative. They are fine for gravel, but their soil is absolute crap. We got some of their compost and we have nothing but weeds coming up. Plus that, the compost had way too much bark in it. Like fools, we tried the 50/50 soil mix. I've never been so pissed. It is nothing but dead dirt (not alive and healthy) full of sand and pebbles and tuns to hardpan in the sun. Water wont even penetrate it - just sits on top of the soil. I was told by the owner that "it was outstanding for veggies". Ha. I will never purchase anything here again. read more

I would give 10 stars if I could. Hands down one of the best customer service experiences ever. I had an idea of what i was looking for, but no idea what or how much I would actually need. My answer to every question was ....ummm i don't know. No problem, they helped me figure it out, never made me feel stupid or bad. They multi tasked well with other customers coming in and out. The owner happened to be in the office, and figured out exactly how much i needed just by looking at pictures on my phone. They asked me if i needed it delivered, yes. Do you want it today? Really? well, yes, if it is possible, but any time in the next couple of weeks is good. Owner says: i'll go warm up my truck and follow you home. Give me an excuse to get out of my office. We were in need of potting mix for a large raised bed and went with the 50/50. It was such a disappointment! The "soil" was gray and cakey..full of glass shards as well as seeds.. in the sun it just is rock hard. I imagined loose, dark brown moist rich soil, this was more or less clay.! I feel misled and disappointed. I may consider other products but would never again get their "soil". read more

This is my 1st time trying them and after reading the reviews I was beginning to doubt my decision but my son in law picked up a half cubic yard of 50/50 for me on Friday morning. As he was unloading it I was checking it out and it looks like very good soil. Debris free, light and airy looking. I mixed in some of my compost and haven't had much time to plant alot, but the plants that I did get to looked like they really appreciated it the next day and today they look even bigger. Their prices and delivery fee were very reasonable and the people I spoke with were very friendly and helpful. My soil was delivered promptly at the time they said it would. While we had a small issue with the first batch of top toil, Steve handled it very professionally and was great to work with. As some other reviewers have said, I wish I could give negative stars. I ordered 12 yards of 50/50 garden mix in the fall, and after spreading about half of it all over my garden beds and putting it in our 8 3x6-foot raised veggie beds, I realized it was fill dirt instead of the 50/50 mix. There were 3/4-inch-long shards of glass, shreds of carpet, a 4-inch-long piece of electrical wiring, more pieces of hard plastic and plastic bags than I could ever count, shreds of plastic netting, etc. And the dirt itself was mostly sand, clay, and gravel. It formed a hard crust on top of the soil that looks more like aggregate cement than soil. You can tap on the soil crust and it makes a loud knocking sound and doesn't break, and water just runs off it. When I realized the problem, I called and was assured the owner wanted to make it right, and I was told he'd call me back. I had to call three times to try to talk to him, and they finally gave me his cell phone so I could actually reach him. When I kindly explained to him that I thought they'd accidentally given me fill dirt instead of 50/50 garden mix, he ARGUED with me and said I was wrong, that the soil couldn't have all those things in it because he screens it himself to 5/16 of an inch. He would NOT listen to the fact that they gave me the wrong dirt entirely, and instead he only heard that I was saying he didn't make quality topsoil. I wasn't saying that at all, but he would not hear me and he only argued back. Then he tried to blame it on Cedar Grove compost, which I've seen other reviews say he did, too. I sent in pictures of all the glass, rocks, and trash I found in the soil, along with photos of the hard crust, and today he did say he would refund me in full. But he will not come and get the remaining 6+ yards of fill dirt sitting in my yard, which I will NOT use, so now I have to try to give it away. I have to dig out all the junky dirt in my food beds and order new soil from a different company, and I have to try to amend all my garden beds where I made the soil worse by putting down what they delivered. Getting such poor soil was hard enough, but the owner's customer service was TERRIBLE! He was rude, condescending, dismissive, and argumentative. He said I am the only customer who has complained, but other Yelp reviews and Facebook posts I've seen say different. Although McClain's has been around a long time and does get a lot of good reviews, there is clearly sometimes an issue with their soil quality or with their accuracy of delivery. I was refunded in full, but only after demanding it, having to talk to the owner twice (miserable conversations), and having to email to explain it all again and provide pictures. My experience with McClain's was terrible, and I don't recommend anyone using them. read more

We got soil delivered at our home in Steilacoom yesterday. I'll give 2 stars because the dirt seems to be good quality. Do not expect good service and make sure you keep a close watch on them as they deliver. Our 20 yr old offered to help the driver as he backed in. He declined by "little ladying" her, told her he could handle it & go back inside. He backed in crooked and missed the tarp and dumped half the dirt in our neighbors yard, an 80 year old lady who pays to have her yard meticulously landscaped once a week. Then he drove off. When my husband, who was working in Seattle, called to inform them that it was pouring rain it was only his wife and kids trying to desperately clean up the drivers mess, it was met with apathy. He was told they sometimes have 100 deliveries a day and they couldn't possibly go back and fix their mistake. Their receipt states "No job is too big or too small". I can assure you, this is not the case. There are those not important enough to be given good quality customer service. Take your business elsewhere. It's not worth the gamble. Oh and don't forget about the 75$ delivery fee for bringing it 6 miles down the road. 100$ worth of dirt turned to almost 200$ real quick and part of it went straight into the ground as it poured rain onto us trying to shovel it all as fast as we could. Jim McClain, owner of McClain's Soil, came to our home to help estimate what we needed. In addition to the fill dirt, we added on gravel, topsoil, and drain rocks, which ultimately resulted in nearly 80 yards of multiple products being delivered. On our first visit to McClain's we bought a yard of "100% organic" compost for our vegetable garden. We paid around $30 for the compost and it was loaded very fast. We were excited to try them out, as we're local and have driven past at least one hundred times before. After we finished spreading the compost in our garden beds we found a ton of broken shards of glass and bits of various types of plastic mixed in with the compost. The keyword is 'AFTER', and there was enough to fill a jar. Our niece and nephews love to help us work in the garden, really get their hands dirty, so this is a major problem. It unfortunately does not end there, by the next day a huge percentage of our plants were dead or dying. The compost burned EVERYthing it touched, severely. I checked the pH with drops and it measured about 5.5. Should have checked it before spreading but didn't expect it to be an issue. I left an email through their website stating the above, and received a voicemail four days later stating that the compost comes from 'Cedar Grove.' He said they've had issues with this company before and that I should call Cedar Grove and repeat my complaint to them. I did not call Cedar Grove as I didn't see why I should have to, I thought that the company who sold it to me would take responsibility for the problem. He left his number, but other than a 'sorry - call someone else' offered no solution. I understand they did not make the compost, but I was and am very unhappy to have beds full of glass, plastic, and dead/dying plants in my ORGANIC garden. Considering that my money was paid to McClain's, I feel it was very unprofessional to tell me I need to call an entirely different company for the problems that I now have to figure out how to deal with. We rarely wear gloves in the garden (and the kids never do), the glass is a serious problem and I imagine will be for some time. We can replant, but we cannot afford to replace the top 6"-8" in all seven beds. I suggest you check the compost thoroughly before you leave their property. Our first visit is also sadly our last. read more

I wish I could rate a negative number. I have used McClains for crushed rock and it was great. However we purchased soil for our vegetable gardens We took extreme measures to remove weeds beforehand. Put down a barrier and surrounded with crushed rock. We were "guaranteed" the soil was clean and weed free. However the weeds arose. Amongst my vegetables we have grass, clover, dandelion and thistles. I am weeding multiple times a week to keep my organic veggies safe. Previously we have gone to the city of Tacoma for their Tagro potting soil. Lesson learned I will do that again. This will be a frustrating growing season. read more

This experience did not get far but was horrible from the get go. I called for some quotes on gravel and delivery and the gentleman on the phone was less than pleased to assist me. He was short, never gave me a name and truly did not care about his company possibly getting a sale. I stated that I was calling for quotes and he quickly became irritated and snappy. When I asked if there was a delivery fee he said "well what do you want!" I said where I live and he rudely said "nope I won't go there" and hung up. I liked that they were a mom and pop type company from the site but never will I look in their direction again for our garden or yard needs. I will be taking my business else where. read more
