I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by my experience at this smog check location on Abbott Street! Every couple of years when my car needs a smog check, I usually try a different location, and I'm so glad I decided to try this one. As soon as I walked in, the woman assisting me was kind, welcoming, and quick to greet me. The smog check itself only took about 20 minutes, but what really stood out to me was the waiting area. Most smog check locations don't really have a comfortable place to wait--usually just a chair in the office. This location has a separate waiting room with so many thoughtful touches. There's a TV, a magazine stand with a great variety of magazines, a comfortable couch and lounge chair, and even a fan if you get warm. They also had a stack of blank paper and a tin full of crayons for kids. I had my kids and my niece with me, so I really appreciated having a comfortable space where they could stay occupied while we waited. It may seem like a small thing, but those little details really show consideration for their customers. Whether you have kids with you, need somewhere comfortable to sit, or simply want a pleasant place to wait while your car is being serviced, this location definitely goes the extra mile. I will absolutely be coming back here the next time my DMV requires a smog check. Great service and a very thoughtful waiting area! read more

The most incompetent car mechanic I can remember. Couldn't fix my car with three tries at it. Can't work on a Mercedes, although they reassured me they could. Sky high prices. Charged me $1200 for a $250 strut. Just an awful experience. read more

First time leaving a review. Used McBrides over the years for smog and minor repairs with no complaints. Recently brought my moms car here for over heating. Replaced parts they said caused overheating, also replaced battery and changed oil. Close to $800.00 later I picked up on Friday afternoon. On Saturday it overheated again. Called Monday morning and they wanted another $95.00 for diagnosis. I understand if something else needs to be fixed but charging to diagnose after I picked it up for that same problem, less than 10miles later is ridiculous. They said its a new problem and everything worked when it left. You would think after $800 they would diagnose problem at no cost, as I would pay for the new repair. read more

She assured me that she is going to charge me an exact dollar amount including tax and everything else, but when I picked up the car; she had added $150 more ($ 95 Diagnostic and other Parts), which should have already been included in her Quote. This place has gone down hill lately. BEWARE! I've always taken my 1999 Jetta here and I've been satisfied for the most part. The last two (2) times they have been extremely disappointing. First, my passenger window wouldn't roll down. I took it in and they gave me a quote of about $200. Steep but I figured its all good so long as my window is fixed. It ended up costing $700+ and they did the work WITHOUT approval. I paid for it. Second, My car would randomly shut off when it idled too low especially when at red-lights. Since it is a stick shift it was difficult to stop and keep the engine humming. They gave me an estimate of $300 and replace my dip stick, a engine sensor and a filter and it cost $400+. I figured so long as my car is fixed I dont mind. Two blocks away it randomly shuts off on me. I get it back home and call them back. I asked if they have any suggestions or ideas. The nice lady at the front desk asked If I could drop it off. I told her I rather not spend more money on my car if it can't be fixed. She said she would have the machanic call me after lunch (it was 2:30) and they never called me back. Its been two days. Now, my car won't start. The engine makes a scratching noise when I try to start it. So now its worse than it was when I first took it in. I feel like they just took my money and left me out to dry. I will NEVER take any of my vehicles here again. Im not one to complain. Im not one to write reviews. Im lucky to be in a position where $400 isn't going to set me back too badly but this is still not right. Im very disappointed. read more

You can trust Dick McBride and his son Richard. That's important in a mechanic. I have brought my cars to them for years. Recently, the check engine light was on. They performed service to the vehicle and after Richard learned what the code meant, he called the dealership and discovered that my car should be covered under warranty. It turned out to be a head that needed replacement on the engine - that would have cost me $3500, but again, it was covered under warranty. I give my highest rating to McBride's for this and many other reasons. They're good people. read more
