I picked up my food from McAllisters because I was over at Blackadder Brewery. The space looked nice although they were just finishing up being extremely busy and still seemed a little frazzled. So I was really craving a hot pastrami on rye with Swiss and a little bit of mayo. You see I miss Philly and Lehigh Valley deli. Hubby stopped at McAllister's to get it for me and I have to say they did not disappoint. I am used to more meat with the northern delis, but this really hit the spot. I'm only leaving one star because I can't leave zero stars. This place is that bad. Avoid at all costs!!! My husband and I arrived at 11:00 am, 30 minutes after they were supposed to open. Chairs were still on top of the tables and all the lights were off. We actually thought it was closed until we opened the door and found that the staff was just too lazy to turn lights on and flip the chairs over. This was a huge warning sign of the awful things to come. The cashier acted like she was doing us a favor by taking our order. She was utterly lazy and full of contempt, which was consistent with the rest of the staff. None of these people should have still had jobs. My wife's order came out wrong. They actually gave her a completely different sandwich. When I told the cashier she reluctantly agreed to "fix" it. Instead of making the sandwich she ordered the cook just took the wrong sandwich and threw some turkey on it. I saw what they did but my wife wouldn't let me send it back again. God only knows what these disrespectful and lazy "staff" would do to it if we sent it back for a second time. My order was correct but the food was mediocre at best. Somehow they managed to make a club sandwich taste bland and tasteless. The final nail in the coffin for this place was when the German roach crawled across our table!!!! We left immediately and will NEVER come back!!!! Please avoid this place if you value your health and your family's time and money. I will try to be as unbiased as possible , but that will be difficult seeing as I LOVE McAlister's. Where do I even begin? The servers have wonderful etiquette, always happy and helpful. Their sweet tea is top notch, all of the food is delicious and incredibly comforting. They are southern hospitality to a Tee. I have only ever been to the locations here in Gainesville and both of them are decked out in university of Florida photos and apparel. I have continued to eat at McAlister's since I moved out here 11 years ago because they're food is incredible and the serving sizes are plentiful especially considering how fair the price point is. My go to is the pick 2 . This gives you options and bang for your buck. But if you just want one choice then you have to get their spud max or any spud for that matter. read more

After surgery and in recovery I was craving a good salad, most places salad are terrible. I saw McAlister wasn't far away and seemed to have a good selection of salads and sandwiches. Pricey, but I'll give it a try. The first salads was pretty good, but that soon changed. A couple of weeks later I saw their Italian Sub, we ordered online for a pick-up. I sent my wife to the deli after placing the order, she checked in but no one came, she had to call. When she returned after 40 minutes with our food, it was a total disappointment, a soggy mess. The lettuces was wilted the bottom bun was soaked. I'll give them another chance. We ordered salads again. This time the order was totally wrong, the salad was supposed to have chicken and other items on it, but just lettuces and nothing else. Sad to think that a simple salad could be such a mess. My salad was supposed to have ham on it, but like the "old commercial where's beef," mind was "where's the ham." When she returned to the deli the young lady was surrey, not friendly. No apology except the cook, he said it was his fault and offered a cookie. This time I filed a complaint. They did apologize and offered us a free meal, but after this we won't be going back. read more

Went here last week with a group for our weekly dinner. We had been out working in the cold doing some Medieval Fair preparations, so a number of us were in the mood for a nice soup along with other food, and when it comes to soup McAllisters is a good place to go in the evening. The menu is about the same as it has always been, and I went with a lemonade (they have good lemonade here) and the French Dip. The sandwich was good, but I really need to remember to add salt to the Au Jus that comes with it. Ah well, lessons learned I guess. Food is basically the same at every McAlister's, the one star is for the experience. My wife and I have a six month old and it was my birthday a few days ago. We couldn't get a sitter so we decided to order delivery. I was super wanting McAlister's; I hadn't eaten there in a long time. We ordered at 630 directly from McAlister's and watched the drivers each cancel the delivery. After five had canceled and waiting an hour and a half, we started trying to call. After ten minutes of constant calling we called another McAlister's in town and they informed us that the one we ordered from closed down at 6pm, not at 9pm like advertised. Just ate here. Sad experience. Showed up exactly 30 minutes before closing, and my family was greeted with utter contempt & disdain by the rudest cashier I've ever met. Before placing the order, I asked her if it was ok to be eating here. She said yes. The food was prepared with hatred. The stuff that should've been hot was lukewarm at best. The croissant on my wife's sandwich was charred. The "chef" and the cashier were arguing and exchanging money while we waited to place the order. Disappointed with the lack of cleanliness, especially during a pandemic. I placed an order for takeout and was never asked if I was dining in (I just assumed you couldn't even if you wanted to). I am outraged. I ordered online and got to my location exactly on time to pick up my food. My order was correct but what was on my order was not. My whole spud LITERALLY was turkey meat- as if they scraped the top off the potato cause it had the wrong toppings and slapped some turkey and melted cheese on top of it to cover. Yeah, its a chain, but its a chain I like. The melts are yummy, the bread is tasty, the desserts are generous (but not cheap) and the variety of sides is above average. The mac & cheese is excellent. Today's sammich was the New Yorker - pastrami and corned beef piled on well toasted bread. Yummy. Its not TooJay's but then again, there are not a lot of great delis in Gainesville, so I'm glad this chain has locations here so I can get a good deli sammich when I want one. They are located nationwide (primarily in the South), so there is a chance that you live close to one or will be in the vicinity of one on your next out-of-town trip. McAlister's offers a quick and casual experience, with a walk up counter for ordering and the food brought to your self-seated table. What makes McAlister's so good? Many things actually. They have a giant selection, which caters more towards the lunch type fare, and everything is made fresh. From their large array of soups to their "Texas size" spuds, each item is made with great tasting ingredients combined to create dishes that you will want on a more regular basis. I have eaten at McAlister's with at least 50 different people over the years and everyone seems to have their favorite go-to's (McAlister's Club, Veggie Spud, Broccoli Cheese Soup), but if you want the Flavor Appraiser recommendation, go with the Harvest Chicken Salad Sandwich (on a Croissant) and a Cup of Chicken Tortilla Soup (which should actually be coined as "Spicy"). And no McAlister's meal would be complete without a large cup of their iced tea. It is so good that they actually trademarked it as "McAlister's Famous Sweet Tea" and sell it to-go by the gallon. Gainesville McAllisters Deli service and food was terrible. Cashier was rude as we were wearing a rival teams apparel traveling back home from a game. It took 20 minutes to ORDER!! The computer was "slow" much like the entire staff. I offered to pay cash multiple times to speed up the process but was told I needed to be "patient" as our order was not processed, food was not being made, and no movement to a solution taking place. Finally, the cashier cancelled the order 17 minutes later. Our food came out, wrong and it was the worst sandwich I've had in years. I would not feed it to a stray dog. I came to McAlister's a couple weeks back with a friend who owed me lunch. He's pretty picky so I suggested McAlister's since I probably haven't been there in 6 months or so. Come to think of it, all of my visits there seem to be about 6 months apart, so they are obviously not luring me in with anything in particular. Everything tastes fine, but it's the epitome of a 3-star rating. It's a safe bet to finish lunch in under an hour and I'm always confident I won't feel sick or be disgusted with my food, but I can't think of anything I've ever had here that's outstanding. Even their spuds, which I initially thought to be a novel idea, all turn out to be pretty bland and monotonous by the time I finish. Most recently I had one of their "new" grilled sandwiches... at least it was new to me, and worthy of a "new" tag on their menu. It was sweet chipotle chicken or something like that. It's decent, but it had a peach chipotle sauce that was just too sweet. I suppose it says something about McAlister's that their sweet tea is the main thing everyone raves about. To me, tea is tea as long as it's sweet. I don't drink enough of it to notice anything other than that. But speaking of the tea, I noticed that their next Free Tea Day is coming up on July 28th, 2011. I won't be there, but wanted to give a heads up to anyone that might go. The food is fine and it's fast. if you have a picky kid, there's lots of options. The atmosphere is better than McDonald's. Ok food. Meh McAlister's Club. I like to get my club on a croissant, extra honey mustard on the side. It's as good as any sandwich I can throw together at home I guess. The meat is, heck idk.... meat. Nothing special. The sandwich always satisfies me. I think it's the croissant that's the life of the party though. And the party is in some serious need of excitement. I don't crave McAlisters so that's kind of saying something for me. Their mashed potatoes are cool? I'll eat here again don't get me wrong. Iv'e eaten here for years but maybe only twice a year.
