First, it's a beautiful restaurant. Passing by you wouldn't think it was a sushi restaurant. It's understated in that respect, but the fish was so fresh and delicate. This place is really incredible. We ordered a bourbon and gin cocktail-both off the specialty menu-and they were both spot on. We also ordered three sushi rolls and the key lime brûlée. Look, I'm picky when it comes to sushi and Asian cuisine but this place is fantastic. Very professional service and the food is money. Not cheap but worth the price. The only negative is the parking situation is a little tight and once COVID is long gone this place will be slammed making parking a bigger issue. Another great restaurant from Chef Michael and his experienced team. My husband and I have already been twice. The Viet-French Pho Onion Soup is the best onion soup we've ever had. Hands down. The sushi rolls (courtesy of Richard, one of the finest sushi chefs around) were all spectacular and a wonderful combination of flavors. The entrees we've tried have all been 5-stars. Dined there last night! It was AWESOME! We chose to sit outside in the lawn. There was 1 waiter taking care of a large area. Kudos to him!!! We ordered spider rolls, the special cheese dip, and the shumai. It was AWESOME! The textures and the flavors were over the top. We then shared between 3 people the surf and turf and the nc grouper. Our group of four had been meaning to try MC for a while now. Asian cuisine in a charming historic home - what a great concept. The ambiance did not disappoint, but sadly my glowing review ends there. First and foremost, the food is mediocre at best. The sushi is not exciting and everything is over priced for what it is. If you want good Asian food, go to an Asian restaurant. "Fusion" generally means watered down flavors at extraordinary prices, and that's exactly what MC is serving up. The Pad Thai was a whopping $28 for which you get a small to medium sized portion of bland noodles and chicken. Even the most incredible version of this at a high end Thai restaurant would be less than $20, but usually more like $12. Second, we specifically told the waiter no mayo on the sushi. He repeated, "no mayo". When our appetizers and sushi rolls arrived thirty whole minutes after we sat down, he placed the two rolls in front of us and repeated, "no mayo". And yet, there was clearly mayonnaise mixed into the crab dollop in the center of the the Sushi Donut. My boyfriend couldn't touch it, but I picked around the crab since we couldn't wait another thirty minutes for them to replace it. After we finally got our entrées an hour after our reservation, after parties who'd arrived later than us were already finishing their meals, the manager came to thank us for coming in and said he'd hoped we were enjoying our meals. We mentioned the wait and he said that they have only one chef and one sushi chef and that an hour is normal for them. We mentioned the mayonnaise and he informed us that the crab is pre mixed with it, and suggested we should've ordered it without crab. We responded that when a customer informs you of a food allergy, there shouldn't be excuses for that item being included. We should have been informed it was mixed in to the crab and asked if we wanted it removed or on the side. The manager was polite but seemed more defensive than sorry and did not offer to rectify the situation until we asked him to take it off the check. He hesitated and said he'd see what he could do and then offered to removed a hot sake from the bill. We didn't care to argue over the $6 difference. Looking at the pictures on Yelp, I think their menu used to be more extensive. Maybe they were better before Covid, maybe they'll be better again once they're fully up and running. read more

My husband and I live in Cary and are sushi fanatics. We frequent m sushi in Durham, and oku in raleigh. We were so excited to try MC restaurant for my husbands birthday - it did not disappoint and might have been the best birthday dinner we have ever had. Let's start with the location - situated right on the corner of academy st in downtown in an old historic home, this place gives you major Charleston vibes. The cocktails are delicious and they have an amazing wine selection. Now for the food - insane. I have a gluten allergy and sadly this kind of food typically is loaded with gluten from soy sauce to tempura batter etc. I let our wonderful waitress Jenny know and she made the chef aware. He knocked every thing we ate out of the park and was able to make the best sushi rolls we had ever had gluten free while still giving me great sauces and gluten free tempura batter. The quality of the fish was incredible and blows all other spots in the area away. Seriously try this place ASAP I cannot say enough good things! This is our new spot and we plan to go back next week! read more

I wish I could give this place 6 stars. From the time we walked in the door until the moment we left, the service was outstanding! I had the passion fruit mojito and my husband had what I think was called the smoky bacon Manhattan. Both were delicious and beautifully presented. We then ordered 4 sushi rolls, potstickers with a Thai chili sauce and a dessert of churros with Mexican hot chocolate. It was all amazing and beautifully plated. I can't say enough about how great an experience it was. I'm thrilled to have such a wonderful addition to downtown Cary. read more

We went to MC tonight for dinner, the food was excellent and service exceptional. Definitely recommend and we'll be back for sure.

Enjoyed a good meal this evening. A few observations....initial arrival was a little lumpy and the staff seemed to be a bit disorganized despite us having a rezy. We were eventually brought to our table in the front room which was pleasant and all to ourselves. Decor is very odd throughout the restaurant and it's rather sparse and cold. Tables are quite small for 5 but we managed. Started off with the cauliflower and crudo which were both delicious and provided hearty portions. Drinks were good and well crafted. Entrees arrived pretty quickly. The star of the show was the veal tomahawk. Delicious, cooked well and crispy outside. The Waygu beef special was very good BUT we were a bit disappointed at the VERY small portion size (4 tiny pieces of the prized beef for $75). Scallops were undersized and the risotto wasn't very good - bland and season-less. We also had two different rolls which were very good, although our guest did not like the soft shell crab roll as the texture was a bit off putting. Perhaps this is just the nature of the larger soft shell crab. Our waiter was actually the bartender and he was very accommodating and knowledgeable about each dish. Parking was a bit of a challenge even on a weekday early dinner. The restaurant was spotlessly clean, including the restrooms. Overall a very good meal, portion sizes were a bit disappointing especially for the price paid. We will be back and try other dishes on the menu. read more

Really wanted to like this place. Service wasn't terrible but not great considering the reputation as fine dining and menu prices. We noted we were celebrating a birthday but was not acknowledged in any significant way. We ordered two desserts so a candle could have been put in one at least. This is pretty standard for nice restaurants if not most in general. Not complaining that one desert wasn't comped even though that's not out of the ordinary either. Server mumbled through the specials so there was no way we would order one. Caprese salad and dumplings were really good but wagyu was disappointing. Four of the tiniest pieces of beef on four slices of cucumber for $30. I know wagyu is expensive but not that expensive. Less than a half an ounce for that price was not what we expected. Duck entree was just ok. Skin on the duck was chewy and unpleasant. Crab ramen was not bad but was a $40 entree so we expected something more. Was essentially butter, ramen, and crab. The space is nice but we were placed against a wall facing a wait station in the dining room that was completely empty. Again, if you're celebrating you don't expect a crappy table in an empty dining room at 5 o'clock. Wish I could recommend this place but for the money it was disappointing. I certainly wouldn't recommend it for a special occasion. Not sure I would return in general to be honest. You could spend the same amount of money or less in most any restaurant in downtown Raleigh and the meal and service will be twice as good. read more

Well the restaurant is probably a good one but the sushi bar should be closed. If you ever went to a sushi restaurant and ordered chefs' choice of 12 pieces sashimi & sushi, you are expecting 12 different kinds of fish. But here you'll only have 4 kinds of products for $50: white fish, bluefin tuna, bluefish(if i remember correctly), and salmon, all of which are cheap and low quality (well it's at least fresh) stuffs that you can easily find in any Asian grocery. And the chef put the thinly cut (as apposed to what my waiter advertised) sashimi directly on a rice roll, just to call it "sushi". If that's your understanding of "sushi", then you should probably go work for the sushi bar in Harris Teeter. Btw you don't need to go to NYC to learn what is top notch sushi. Just go to any specialized sushi/Japanese restaurant in the triangle area. You'll see at least what makes a sushi chef "qualified". read more

We sat outside and after the sun starts going down, it's really a magical vibe and a great place to share a bottle of wine. Everything felt really safe, socially distant and super comfortable. My husband and I love MC's. It is definitely the best sushi and sashimi around. The fish is always fresh and the sashimi platter is incredibly generous. We went prior to COVID-19 and had incredible service and were happy to see that the same level of care went into adapting to safety measures post-Covid. Last week we ventured out for our first time to eat outdoors and felt surprisingly relaxed on the porch. This was in large part because of the number of precautions the staff took. This included temperature checks as you enter, gloves and masks among all servers, and a sanitation station when you first arrive. Not to mention that if you sit in the garden or porch you can do so from a safe distance. We will definitely be back and really hope that others will give MC's a try (even if you feel more comfortable with takeout at this point). read more
