Yes, we went into the Select/Premier level knowing that it offered a competitive level of play. This was appropriate for our child's personality. But what we witnessed were extremely talented kids burning out in one season, and absurd politics at play at the coaching/directors level, with the goal of building up the level Premiere teams. This has turned into an extremely bad environment for young athletes. A significant number of parents are opting to take their kids to different clubs in 2018-2019, and many good coaches are leaving as well. We are making a statement through our $$$ and talent, which will no longer be invested in this club. It is very well organized compared to other clubs in the area, but that is about the only positive thing I can say. The choices being made are sadly misguided--cloaked as being "for the kids" when in truth they are for a broader initiative of elevating the sport in this region--a noble endeavor, I'm sure, being built at the detriment of the kids playing today. I sincerely hope that things turn around for them, for the sake of federal way area kids who love the game. Remember that as parents, we hold the power of making our children's youth athletic experiences positive and good. If things feel off, be vocal. If that doesn't work, get out. Any club that tells you they can turn your 10 year old into a collegiate level athlete is lying to you. Top level athletes are born and given opportunities to grow--not made. Teach your children to love the game first, and to grow healthy bodies and minds--skills that will accompany them through life. The team wins, and the possibility of scholarships come later, to a very select few. Appreciate youth sports for what they should be--a time of learning, growing, and above all, joy.

What started by chance became one of the most meaningful journeys of her life, and ours. Over the years, she progressed through every belt rank with discipline, determination, and commitment. In 2024, she earned her first-degree black belt, and in May 2026, she proudly earned her second-degree black belt. She was also the only girl in her second-degree testing cycle, something that made us even more proud of her determination, resilience, and commitment. DMW Martial Arts has truly changed her as a person. We watched her grow from a timid and shy child into a confident, respectful, focused, and resilient young woman. The lessons learned here go far beyond martial arts. The journey to second degree was not easy. Six and sometimes seven days a week of training, high expectations, and constant dedication taught her perseverance, accountability, teamwork, and resilience. Even during school breaks and family vacations, training remained part of her routine. The owners are incredibly committed and hold a high standard for helping young martial artists grow. This is not an easy path, but that is exactly what makes it so meaningful. Students are challenged, supported, and pushed to become stronger, both mentally and physically.
