I went here with a few friends last night for hookah and to eat. The experience was severely lacking. We initially ordered 4 waters, chicken wings, and a lemon mint hookah. The waters came quickly, but nothing else. After a few minutes, we ordered a mixed grill plate and a grilled shrimp plate. At this point, two people sat at a table behind us. They received their hookah well before us. A different server (I think his name was Ahmed) helped us out by preparing our hookah, which was 30 minutes late, and now the mixed grill came out...and it wasn't hot. The chicken wings came out a little while after, but they had a strange taste so we couldn't eat those, either. Frustrated, I asked to speak to a manager and walked away from the table to meet him. I explained how long we had waited and also canceled the shrimp, which still had yet to arrive. The manager said he was going to handle it for us, but a few minutes later, the shrimp came out anyway, which we didn't accept. The original server avoided us for the rest of our visit. When we got our check from Ahmed, the manager had taken off $30. Unsatisfied, we asked to speak to him at our table, since no one besides Ahmed had bothered to come by at any point, despite the manager I initially spoke to going to a table behind us and having a full conversation. A different gentleman I assume is the owner now came over and explained he took off the shrimp and the wings, but that was the best he was willing to do. He also strangely admitted the people who received their hookah before us were related to him- I'm not quite sure why you would tell a paying customer complaining about the service that the reason they waited was because your own family was being served first. The bill ended up being almost $60 for 4 bottles of water, one hookah we waited 30 minutes for, and a dinner plate that wasn't even hot when it came out before the appetizer. The only positive thing I could say about this place is the decor and the outside seating area looked nice and Ahmed is great, but I definitely won't be back here when there are plenty of other local places with better service and customer service. read more

Me and couple friends came for dinner and hookah on a Friday night in August. There's never a cover charge or minimum. I ordered the fried fish sandwich and it wasn't too good, i should've stuck with the appetizers because I know they are always tastey. The service for this restaurant is by far the most awful I've ever experienced. To begin, our appetizers took 20 minutes to come out, and not even all at once. No, they were timed like contractions; painful and poorly scheduled. We finished our appetizers with 10 minutes. Another 15 minutes pass and our waitress did not ask us if we'd like to order anything else and not come to check in on us or clean our plates. She failed us like I did my own mother. Though we understood that it was her second day on the job, it felt more like it was her second day of living on this planet. Perhaps she is an alien sent by a rogue empire to destroy our nation. Regardless, I had to flag her down to order more food and clear the table. After we ordered the extra food we also made sure to tell her that we'd like two orders of Mamoul. About 30 minutes pass and no food. Another 20 minutes pass and a single order of Mamoul comes out. (For those unaware, that's a dessert.) Our food didn't come out before ONE of the two desserts we ordered. This is an absolute crime against humanity and I will make sure to send a letter to the UN about this monstrous act. After we finished the one dessert she proceeded to say "Your food is coming off the grill now." which must be alien for "Another 30 minutes for your food to get out." Because that's what she said when she came back 5 minutes later. At this point, it had been two hours of unbearable service, okay food for what was there, and lies. "40 people are inside right now and we're trying to get their food out." Was the excuse we received. Completely unacceptable considering I counted only 25 of whom all arrived much later. This place is awesome! I go here all the time with a bunch of friends. Service is great, food is delicious, and it's a great atmosphere for hookah! I snuck out of the house and decided to go with my friends and other people. It is BYOB, bring your own BOTTLE, so we did that. Luckily, for me, I started drinking prior to going to Mazaj. I was with my friends and they assured me that we were going to get something to eat, so the alcohol wouldn't hit me... they didn't. I received a call from my father and he repetitively asked, "WHERE ARE YOU?!" and my first response, "Dad, we're at the bowling alley!" He asks again, I say "Dad, we're at (insert friend's name here)!" and still not believing me, he asks one more time and I say "Dad! We're at MazADBJONFHEWOSADJBSJNlkfsalfknaejfieibsk!" Whilst on the phone, I puke from the JD and then a person we were with recorded the whole event. Then they helped me outside and we met a girl and that same guy who recorded the event got "her" number. Not even ten minutes pass and he calls "her." I will start with the good. I truthfully enjoyed the whiting and kibbe naye, however the service is pretty terrible. Your waiter will never come check on you. The parking is also terrible so you "have" to valet for $5 unless you park on the street, however by the time you figure that out you're already in the lot. Hmmm what can I say about Mazaj, after coming here countless times you'll get the same crappy service no matter if it's completely dead or if it's packed. Walked in today asked if we could be seated under the umbrella since there is literally no one here. Was told can't do because it's reserved for customer with 3 or more. Asked about the different hookah options are. Menu states three options between regular for 14 , mixed flavor for 16 and exotic for 18. I always love orange and lemon mint here. Behold I asked if I could get a orange and lemon mint was told that would be considered exotic cause it's three flavors. If you look at the menu lemon/mint is considered one flavor and orange a separate one but I guess there their staff doesn't know how to read. All I can say is there staff is beyond rude, they would rather shove there only customers to sit literally in the parking lot instead of an empty seat that's under the umbrella. If you love hookah and want some good places to go in Paterson I would say travel down Main Street for another 5 minutes and visit places like Beirut, La Ziza, Kamils, or Sultans. I've eaten here in the past and never had any problems but the last experience I had was horrible. I asked the gentleman that was hosting if they had hummus but never ordered it, he left then came back and i ordered a falafel and a bottle of water. When they brought me my food i noticed that there was hummus, I never ordered the hummus so i thought it was part of the meal. I asked for the bill and noticed that i was charged for the hummus, after going back and forth with the host i ended up having to pay for the hummus. Came here last week, the atmosphere was great they had the final nba game on. Ordered different appetizers loved the hummus and soup. I ordered 2 patters the shawarma and the mixed grill. I was very impressed with this place. When I got there they had valet parking which was 5 dollars. It is a really nice atmosphere inside. They have a good variety of food and hookahs. We had a watermelon hookah which was good. You also don't have to order food. You can just order a hookah and drinks if you'd like. I had the shawarma sandwich which was fantastic. It came with fries that were also great. The waitress took a few minutes to take my order but other than that the service was great. And the guy doing the coals was good about keeping up with it. I have been to Mazaj many times, mostly on the weekends. My favorite is their shish Tawook, and they make decent hookah, however they are always out of most of the flavors on the menu. Last time we went there on a Tuesday night, and we ordered two shish tawook and two chicken sherwerma. Shish tawook chicken was burnt and very dry and sherwerma tasted like flavorless fried chicken pieces. As we were paying for the dinner, I noticed that there was a tiny flyer on the table with Tuesday night special for Chicken or Beef sherwerma-so I asked the waitress to charge for the two chicken sherwarma as Tuesday night special. After speaking with her manager, she says it was my responsibility as a CUSTOMER to inform the waitress that I would like the Tuesday night special. At any other restaurant, a server ALWAYS mentions 'special', but Mazaj doesn't follow this simple rule. Furthermore, they don't even include the 'special' section on the menu-it is on a tiny flyer on the table that many people would simply miss. The rules for Valet are also different at Mazaj, customer simply can't tip based on their valet experience they are charged $5 for the valet parking. Last night when the valet brought the car to the door, he didn't even remove the orange cones from the front of our car, my husband ended up moving the cones before we could exist the parking lot. Last night it was the worst experience, I am never going back there again! They have untrained staff, management is cheap, he only saved $6 by not offering Tuesday night special price but lost a frequent customer. read more

On top of that, the service was horrible and we were automatically charged 15% gratuity and we were only 2 people. I've been a customer of this establishment since 2010 and have really watched the service go down terribly. When I do come here, it's more so of a last resort when other places are at full capacity or when we only want hookah and no food. I remember the days when the service here was good and I did NOT have to wait almost an hour just to be served cold food on two separate occasions, to have to ask for new coal multiple times before getting them or even leaving because I would just never get them, and to have been waiting for things when I can watch the wait staff just standing around talking or eating trailmix. It's really irritating knowing this was one of my favorite spots to come for shisha and food, but has been extremely disappointing as of late. I only come here as a last resort when this place from 2010-2012 was my first resort choice. Something needs to be done with the service which is ridiculous. I as a customer shouldn't have to run outside and find someone to service my needs when that is your job. Terrible!! read more

All I have to say is what happened? The food used to be so good during lunch when me and my friends came,but when we went last Saturday night it's like they forgot how to cook food. The so called platter was horrible, especially the chicken and meat. The hookah was the best part, but that didn't make up for horrible service and a horrible hostess. I'll try again during the afternoon for lunch when the staff is not all drunk and lazy. And so much for costumer service, the manager thinks she's a queen, and we should be serving her. This place was suggested to me by my friends & family and after the experience I had, I will NEVER go back! First off, the valet driver sped so quick around the corner to park the car that he was close to running it into the building. We then were led into a separate building that was decorated like...a ghetto picnic. We asked to be moved into the main restaurant because of the atmosphere did not fit us. Once we got into the main building, we seated ourselves. Even though the restaurant was close to EMPTY, a waiter asked us to move. After moving our seats and waiting for over 15 minutes for help which we never got, we left. The fact that waiters and waitresses were running back and forth but never came over to help us was incredibly rude and unprofessional. We have never been treated to such poor service. We went right to La Ziza on Crooks & it was also our first time there. It was a COMPLETELY different experience to say the least. I been here twice and haven't really enjoyed the place at all. It's a nice place to hang out considering it's BYOB and since my friends drink they like the place but personally I don't drink, I'm all about the hookah. My biggest pet peeve is when a hookah place runs out of a tobacco but it's okay if it's just one flavor that's run out but twice that I came here on a weekend they did not have a single specialty flavor in stock! Just the very basic flavors that I can pack at home myself. When I go to a hookah place, I like trying a new flavor to see if I can add it to my home collection but this place only had the basic stuff. The hookah itself was decent because you can't mess up orange mint. I'm giving it three stars because the food and service was good. The worst service I've encountered in my 26 years of life. We waited over an hour for our food to arrive. Our waitress forgot about us. Our appetizer never came, so we had told the waitress to forget it. She brought it out anyway, after we were done with our desert. She ended up charging us for it and adding an automatic gratuity to the bill even-though it was only 2 people. The obnoxious lady next to us was smoking cigarettes, inside the tiny establishment, the entire time (despite the NO SMOKING sign) and not one staff member said a word to her.
