My husband and I were in Peru last spring, so when we were in the area and found this place on Yelp, we were up for it! They served complimentary yuca fries with dipping sauces, which we really enjoyed. This is a bit different from in Peru, where they serve cancha ( Peruvian corn nuts) at the beginning, and I'm addicted to those things, so I found it under side orders and promptly ordered a bowl. My husband and I always fight over ordering the aji de gallina, which is pulled chicken in a creamy sauce. It's not spicy, but sweet. I ordered the aji de gallina and convinced him to order Mayta's ceviche. We enjoyed our meals and thought they were very comparable to our meals in Peru. I also ordered the Chincha morada, a purple corn drink, which is very sweet! I even recommended the restaurant to a Peruvian friend. He asked if this place was a restaurant, and I said yes it is a restaurant not a fast casual kind of place. The owner is Peruvian. My husband and I will return to this place in the future. read more

Amazing place. We ordered the parrillada which is a combo of beef, chicken, and shrimp. It was delicious, the chicken and the beef cooked to perfection. The waitress was very nice and helpful. For one of the two sides that comes with the parrillada, she suggested the fried rice, it was awesome. We ordered the salad for the second side, it was the freshest salad ever. I have to say that this dish was absolutely amazing and it was my first time trying this meal in my life. The Peruvian restaurants I've been too always have the perfect steak-cut fries and these were delicious as usual. The mix of carne(steak) con papas (fries) y arroz(rice) is something that you have to have! The sautéed vegetables give it the perfect touch. During a recent drive through Frederick, i decided to stop here for lunch. I read some of the reviews and admittedly love Saltado, I decided to get the steak (lomo) Saltado. I also ordered a couple of beef empanadas. This restaurant was not crowded or overly busy. Most of the staff had masks and I felt comfortably safe. I would think during this time they do a lot of carry out with the limited amount of space. Staff were very friendly. My empanadas were fresh and the outside was flaky and crisp. A fair about of filling, was pretty pricey for the two you had to order. Lomo Saltado was a good portion and the seasoning a little different than other places...but a good different. I really liked the seasonings and there was a good about of steak. I asked for a hot sauce but was not as hot as I thought, still green sauce is always better. They didn't serve with the standard green or yellow sauce which I would have liked, but had a lot of flavor on its own without the other sauces. I would like to try some other dishes when I'm in the area. They also have receipt you can scan and Apple Pay, which is so much quicker. read more

While visiting Frederick, chose Mayra's for dinner. Started with an appetizer of chicken empanadas, served with two sauces, one very spicy and a milder one.The empanadas were tasty but seemed too doughy. Perhaps the heavy doughy texture is authentic for Peruvian cuisine. My dining partner chose the Tallarin Saltado with chicken. He enjoyed the dish stating the flavors were different and delicious. I chose the Pulled Chicken Sandwich with yuca fries. The sweet and spicy sauce mixed well with the chicken. I was advised by our server that the yuca fries were starchy. Indeed they were! They were like very large potatoes fries with a similar texture. I could not finish the serving but did enjoy them. The staff was attentive and did well for a Saturday night dinner rush. The Arroz Chaufa with Chicken was massive and enough for two people. A mound of savory rice was mixed with tender pieces of shredded chicken and topped with a fluffy layer of scrambled eggs and a lightly spicy sauce. Actually came here by accident lol. Went with my sister on a Thursday around 2. It was pretty empty. We were greeted and seated right away outside. The server and the owner were very friendly. They had a lunch special going on: $15.99 for one appetizer, an entree and a soft drink which I thought was great. My sister and I got chicken and beef empanadas. Both were good (beef was oily). I ordered the cilantro rice while she got the chicken chaufa. Good food presentation however I do wish my rice had had more seasoning. My sister's food was good. Lomo Saltado's Not For Me, But Interested In The Other Dishes This rating is based strictly on the lomo saltado, which I ordered despite knowing that it was unlikely to be a good fit with my tastes, given that it's very heavy on starch. I did so because the dish is an integral part of Peruvian-Chinese chifa cuisine, and I wanted to try it at least once. So what did I discover? Well, I don't plan on getting lomo saltado ever again...because it's too starchy. But the rendition at Mayta's was also disappointing in its execution as well, particularly in terms of the sauce, which I found to be too thin--some corn starch in there may help--too one-note soy sauce, and too salty. I realize I have no other examples of lomo saltado to compare this to, but I think my observations should be pretty universal. Some non- thick cut fries would also be preferable, though that may be a personal taste. That said, I very much want to try Mayta's again since I've had good experiences with other dishes in Peruvian cuisine. The service was terrific, I liked the complimentary quinoa soup, and the menu is full of things I'd like to eat next time. This won't be the last review of Mayta's, and I'm sure it'll be much higher next time. read more

The "cherry on the top" was totally cold inattentive and amateurish service with "an attitude", and tip scale on the check starting with minimal 20%???? No, we don't mind leaving very generous tips for food and service we really like, but for THAT KIND OF EXPERIENCE we left 0 tips. Horrible experience. Went out to eat with my family. The server served everyone's meal besides my daughters which they served 25 minutes later then they brought out the incorrect meal. We are usually very easy customers, but this was ridiculous. Also, we were the only customers in the entire establishment. I honestly do not understand all the positive reviews. My family loves Peruvian chicken so we were excited when their food truck visited our neighborhood. I would give it zero stars if I could. First, they messed up our order. Had to run back to get correct items. Second, the food was cold and tasteless. I believe we should have received a sauce of some sort to accompany the empanada tasting. However, thru were so dry and tasteless that no amount of sauce could have improved the flavor. My friends and I stopped here when coming back from a retreat in Middletown. The ají a la gallina was good and the lomo Salgado as well. Lomo has the kind of bread that absorbs juice/grease well on the bottom, which is a good thing. :-) I enjoyed the chicha morada and they also had Inka Cola, which were nice to see after having visited Peru this fall. I'd totally come back here again. Also very nice bathrooms and good service. One awesome thing to note is that the head chef came out to chat with us and ensure that we enjoyed the meal. This is my second time eating here and I'm so pleased. The first time the co owner served me and was so pleasant the service was great and the food was to die for. We stopped here based on the recommendation of the owner of Mad Science Brewing Company. I initially expressed skepticism that a Peruvian restaurant could accommodate a vegetarian, but he assured me they had options. And guess what? They do! I was tempted to go the safe route with the quinoa salad but ended up going rogue and ordering the Tacu Tacu burger. It was an unfamiliar combination but it was fantastic! The burger arrived in an enormous brioche bun, which I quickly set aside. After I'd eaten every single bite of the "burger" itself, I suggested to the waiter (manager?) that they not sell it as a burger but as an entree instead. It was so unique and delicious that the bread was completely superfluous. (The man order the 1/4 white chicken and he said it was great, but this review is really for the vegetarians out there who, like me, assumed they'd never be able to eat in a Peruvian restaurant!) It's cooked to perfection and the smokey grill flavor enhanced the experience. It was tender and juicy without being overwhelming in fishy taste. 5 STARS! The Wok- Tallarin Saltado and chose the steak. It was everything i didn't know i want. I went on a limb and ordered a random plate i've never tried for my second time there. It was amazing the sauce it came; pasta cooked al dente and went well with the dark sauce. The steak was a perfect size and bite. I could have slurped the plate up if i wasn't in public that's how it good it was! I couldn't stop talking about it to my boyfriend. He loved his dish as well; the steak was well marinated. If you are looking for excellent and authentic Peruvian food, look no further. I have been here twice and each time I leave I look forward to the next time I can return. I live in Virginia so this is a hike for me... but SO worth it. The "skewered beef, skewered jumbo shrimp, skewered chicken breast marinated in Peruvian spices" is amazing as is their "Oven Roasted Chicken". If you are in a hurry, skip the chicken and come back when you have more time. You could always order a whole chicken to go when you place your dining order. The first time we came in as a group of six and there wasn't an issue getting a table immediately to accommodate us. The second time we visited, there were just two of us.
