The Mayo Clinic Emergency Department treated me for influenza A recently. As always it was a positive experience surrounded by caring cheerful staff. The new ED runs so smoothly with all departments close by. X-rays and blood tests results are back quickly and a board in your private room indicates when they have all been completed and the Dr and nurses names along with test progress is updated quickly. I have had many experiences of other departments there, from neurology , to foot surgery consultations and I am presently experiencing appointments in the PT department. Every where I go I am greeted and cared for with loving care and expertise. There are no rushed appointments and in my experience they run on time. I had a transplant here and then stayed 2 days in the hospital 2/17. I also had a lot of after care appointments. I think mayo does a really good job. The hospital experience was great and all the nurses were great. I didn't meet the surgeons but the anesthesia team was great. The only bad thing that I took a star off for was the food was soooooo bad. I mean like nearly inedible. When you're trying to recover and eat it's hard to when you can barely shove down the food. I'm not even very picky but I can't overstate how bad it is so order oatmeal and fruit and stuff that isn't going to be nasty. The aftercare was also great and they set all my appointments for me and it was so easy to stay on track. No complaints and every provider I saw was great. read more

We are deeply disheartened by our experience at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale. My husband was sent to the ER for jaundice, likely gallstones. After admission he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. A stent was placed in his gallbladder. He was within 3 weeks admitted again, with sepsis and a new stent was placed in the gallbladder. Within weeks he began having severe abdominal issues again. We requested a GI consult repeatedly the week before Thanksgiving. Dr Ahn was on vacation, a CT couldn't be ordered stat by outpt and we were again referred to the ER. Dr Ahn seemed to be hearing we wanted a surgery consult for the gallbladder. We repeatedly said, just a consult with gi. A referral to a GI doctor. Instead within 2 days he was back in the ER. The GI team was called in and a stricture was found in his duodenum. An ng tube was placed and they said he'd get a new stent Friday. Back to outpatient oncology, when we directly addressed our concerns with Dr Ahn on 12/2 he said, and I quote, "I didn't give you this cancer, I'm trying to help you beat it". No one was insinuating he gave anyone cancer. The inpatient IM doctor; Dr Willies, told us that the endoscopy team didn't work weekends and it wasn't emergent so Monday they'd do the surgery. Our adult kids were present for this. At this point he'd been 48 hours without food. We pointed out that another 72 hours npo wasn't going to work as hes already lost 50 lbs as a cancer patient. They started IV nutrition. Sunday the team apparently decided it was emergent and the stent procedure was done then. That was 4 days without food. Throughout my now 3 inpatient stays at Mayo a few things became clear. The nurses, volunteers, social workers and housekeeping are amazing. The physicians were condescending and rude. Bedside manner is non existent and the lack of empathy made everything worse. Mayo offers nothing for family members staying to support their loved ones. After 24 hours in an er overflow room: No cots for sleep, but a recliner that goes flat. No assistance with food during the stay, tho the nurses helped us find the hidden food. The coffee tastes like old gas station coffee, and the cafeteria food leaves a lot to be desired. A non smoking campus is great, but having a shuttle or scooters to help ppl physically addicted to nicotine would help. Or offering patches to family members. The food served as a patient was inedible. A raw potato and steamed fish in a bowl won't help him gain weight. A mechanical soft diet should not be from a bag and look like and smell like cat food. At this point we were obviously more than upset. We had not eaten or slept properly in almost a week. Let's not forget that the entire inpatient stay could have been avoided by a GI consult as we'd requested. (Again, not a surgery consult). When we voiced our complaints and suggested getting care elsewhere Dr Willies became defensive, and told us "if you don't like it here go somewhere else". Which is basically the entire vibe we have gotten from Mayo. Once home we began to read through the medical records. Apparently on 11/10/2025 a ct showed a new lesion on his liver suspicious for metastasis. This was not addressed at all during the 12/2 visit. Nor during the inpatient stay. When we sent a portal message we were told it would be discussed at the next visit 12/16. It was. It should've been adressed in November. Repeatedly being told to use the ER when we want a multidisciplinary proactive team approach and to avoid the ER is an issue. Pharmacy: narcan is free. Charging patients $50 seems wrong. With lack of sleep, lack of nutrition, nicotine withdrawals and a general sense of lack of empathy by the doctors, yes - we both were angry and upset. We both used profanity and often use profanity. We're not professionals anymore. Your team caused an elderly disabled ill woman to almost have a nervous breakdown. Me sitting in the wheelchair in a doctors office sobbing is not what we expected from Mayo. We are allowed to be angry at what we believe is a terrible standard of care when we had such high expectations of Mayo. We are allowed to use profanity as long as we're not cursing someone out and calling them names. The f word is perfectly acceptable language. Being ignored or threatened when she's trying to advocate for me is a wild response. At this time it's a lack of trust. The fear of retaliation. I'm not thrilled about being forced to see Dr ahn again when we requested a new oncologist. Mayo denied this request without any reasoning. I'm doing this review today bc no chemo treatments are scheduled in March. After being on hold 25 minutes we reached scheduling we need a dr visit before scheduling chemo. We saw him 2 weeks ago. Being just another number is bs. read more

This is one of the best places there is. We came here a week early for to doctors orders. We have a bunch of tests after test. Had an MRI tonight at 515pm didn't get out after 830pm. That was pretty long. The quality of cars is amazing. My doctor is such a gem. I have a few on my Care Team. Dr. Krishna and Dr.Bendock are really nice doctors. I'm very fortunate to see them. The MRI is at Building 1. You check in at the front desk, they get you all set up, then they take you back. They have 3 buildings. I will visit the three during my stay here. Plus I'm from Maui, Hawaii I came all this way and I'm very glad that I did. read more

The best hospital experience ever, so far! I live in Yuma, AZ, where medical care is sub-par, especially, the hospital! From the time I walked through the ER doors, I was checked in, Triaged & into an ER bed all within the first 15 minutes of this visit. Impressive! Then the care in the ER was swift and I was admitted. Fast forward 24 hrs. I'm still here with a team of doctors, nurses & therapists. Our Son was on a ventilator and Life Flighted from a Tucson Hospital ER to the Mayo Phoenix because Tucson did not have the care level necessary for his medical emergency. Our son suffered sudden seizures and high fever and cause was confirmed after spinal tap in Tucson to be life threatening Spinal Meningitis. The Mayo received him and began life saving measures at the ICU. We arrived at the Mayo ICU and over the course of a week met his multi-Specialist team of Doctors and nurses who developed a plan. This team's expertise and compassion for family was truly remarkable. His nurses were outstanding by all measures. The medical staff learned from us he just retired after 21 as a senior Army Special Forces Operator. He went through several cranial surgeries at Walter Read and John Hopkins Bethesda medical Center for combat injuries and his current emergency was related. Mayo's team of Critical care Doctors saved his Life. They are developing a care plan with follow up visits with Mayo Specialists. Imagine that your patient has an order from 7 months ago that state that she needs a non emergent MRI. You have a standing order in the Mayo Clinic system for a MORE URGENT mri recommended by a PA that works at Mayo clinic. The severity has increased, new symptoms have come up that are concerning, she's complaining of new pain and based on a finger pull and a toe push, you determine that no imaging is justified or necessary. Not only is an MRI not justified in your professional opinion, but neither is a CT scan to rule out possible infection or csf leaks or abscesses that might have accumulated. As cysts have the ability to degenerate the bones of the spine causing instability. So you tell the lady to get lost when she asks you for an explanation and to realize she's not getting a second opinion or another doctor to treat her because you don't swap out doctors. Then she warns you that if something were to happen to her that the hospital could be held responsible. You pause and think, snd tell her that you will go get someone after all. You sit down already decided never to return. Outside of your view, the registration guy comes into the room. The patient hadn't even been there long enough for registration to register her and you just happen to be discharging the patient at the same time. You, the doctor, never come back into the room to give the pt a second opinion. The nurse outside of your view, goes to check the patient out, and he says to the patient, "Was it something I said? The nurse couldn't believe that you sent her home so soon. Then out of the corner of your eye, you see a hunched over lady, walking out with her grandson, and she finally leaves. I had a great experience here. 10 years ago I had a vein pop out in my leg. I'm a frequent runner and have run long distance for a lot of those miles. I had a scan done 10 years ago but wanted a follow-up appt. Dr. Soh from the vascular department cared for me and was so clear in her explanations and recommendations. It was a clean place and people seemed genuinely kind and helpful. They also have golf carts to help people get from their car to the doors. I didn't use one, but thought that was nice. read more

My husband just had surgery at Mayo this morning. Received nothing but the best care from every staff member we interacted with -- check-in, registration, nurse, surgeon, pharmacist, cafeteria worker, security, etc. If you don't want to hang out at the hospital they can also text you updates. I love getting the play-by-play, didn't feel in the dark. They are also building and hiring like crazy to keep up with the demands of the growing Valley. The hospital has also been recently remodeled and has some beautiful artwork, murals, etc. Very clean and healing environment without being "sterile" with that gross hospital smell. read more

Mayo Clinic Hospital was a lifesaver for me. I had been struggling for over a year and a half to find out what was going on and causing me to continue to need to be readmitted to the hospital here in Phoenix. By chance, I had to go to the emergency department at Mayo due to its convenient location where I was and within a couple of weeks, they had figured everything out. They have been wonderful and working with me in the transition from no insurance to Medicare. In the interim, they were extremely gracious with working with me on payment for services received. The clinicians were wonderful. The nurses were wonderful. The facility is clean, updated, and inviting. I don't know that I ever want to go to another healthcare system, and that's saying a lot as I've worked for two of the three most well-known healthcare systems in the country. read more

When I am able to and feeling better I'll definitely write a much more in-depth review . However I wanted to get this information out there ASAP to save someone not only the trip to Mayo but the money if they were thinking on going to the ER for an injury that requires an MRI because they do NOT do MRIs in their ER (crazy right !) Now take it I had an accident which affected my back, was having numbness and weakness in my legs so thinking if I had a back injury Mayo was the best place to go ... wrong ... after waiting in the ER for 4 hours I was told that I would be discharged to get an outpatient MRI .. being a nurse I questioned that and they said "It's no longer standard practice to do MRIs in the ER" (umm yes it is , especially with my symptoms ) ... it took a lot of advocacy from my family and myself at which the doctor ordered a CT scan and very quickly things changed once we found out i had one possibly two broken vertebrae... at which time I was told "I guess now we have to do an MRI since neurosurgery will want that over the CT" . So I asked if this no MRI was just on back /bone patients and was told "no , we don't even do them on suspected stroke anymore , just CT scans " ... yup ... so ... If you are needing to go to the ER and potentially need any type of MRI DO NOT go here . Please go somewhere that can actually give you the imaging needed to treat you timely and appropriately (The 2 stars is only because my nurse was phenomenal and advocated hard core for me as well ) read more

Horrendous experience, coming to Mayo Clinic has only hurt my health! I was expecting the outstanding care that Mayo Clinic plasters all over their advertisements but instead I was insulted, dropped as a patient then punished for raising a complaint. I have a chronic, mysterious condition that causes daily pain and even raised the suspicious of cancer. I waited months for an appointment hoping for answers. I saw Dr. Lisa Speiser (Mayo Clinic Arizona Infectious Disease Department). During the visit she kept pushing me into a very invasive, dangerous procedure outside of her expertise. I told her that I almost lost my life this year due to procedure complications but it fell on deaf ears. Even worse, she dropped me as a patient after I asked a reasonable medical question through the patient portal. I have a full record of this conversation on file. In that conversation, I politely asked her a question about new lab results ordered by another doctor. Her response was sarcastic, rude and she locked the message thread to prevent me from responding or continuing care with her! She refused referrals to other specialists when before she was handing them out on a whim (one of the doctors she referred me to told me he didn't even know why I was sent to him - this visit was $1200). Furthermore, Dr. Lisa Speiser ordered a service without my authorization or knowledge - I am glad I was sitting down when I saw the $900 claim. When I complained to Mayo Clinic Patient Relations and requested refunds, they ignored me until I followed up. I then received a call from Melissa (no last name provided); she lied about granting a refund for the visit with Dr. Lisa Speiser and refused a full refund for the unauthorized service. She also lied that letters would be sent to me on this topic, to date I haven't received anything (2 months after I filed the complaint). Furthermore she stated that the Medical & Administrative Leadership Team at Mayo Clinic reviewed my complaint, fully supported all conduct and would not discuss anything further. Melissa refused to discuss that I was left without care, a diagnosis and a potentially life threatening illness. When I asked for referrals to other specialists, she told me to call scheduling and do it myself. I feel that Mayo Clinic punished me for filing a complaint. I regret wasting my time, emotions and health on this mess. Waiting for care that never came has only worsened my symptoms and for the "pleasure" of this experience they bill 4 to 6 times more than any other facility. Completely awful, heartless and cruel way to deal with someone potentially dealing with cancer. Apparently this is the culture at this place since it was very clearly supported up to their Leadership levels. To say that I will not be coming back would be an understatement. I came to the ER for abdominal pain. I got lucky because the lobby was empty. I was taken back right away into the triage room. I had to have emergency surgery for appendicitis. Beware!!! Emergency Room Care! They will create problems where there aren't any just to increase the cost! My son went in because he had become intoxicated. He has had some anxiety the past few weeks because he is buying a house and work has been stressful. They chose to do a psych eval while he was intoxicated and determined a small concern. After doing all tests to see that everything was good and he got fluids and sobered up they said he couldn't go home because he needed another psych eval. He went into the clinic at 3pm in the afternoon. It is after 1am and they STILL have not found someone to complete the exit evaluation. And there is nothing he can sign to be released once they get you on that. The original eval should not have even been done to begin with but is invalid if he was heavily intoxicated and they won't do anything meanwhile racking up the bill trapping him there. Beware!! Mayo has broken my heart. We had gotten off to a rough start years ago, but I felt care had improved. I was born with an extremely rare genetic disease; 1:1M (HypoKPP/ATS) I also have a secondary rare disease that is a rare version of that disease; seronegativeMG and K+ wasting along with a cruel vasovagal syncope disorder with POTS that has taken quality of life from me in the worst of ways. When I arrived in AZ years ago I was brand ambassador to the Channelopathy Foundation in Bern, Switzerland, stateside in Patient Driven Research under Prof. Urs Thomet and Hughs Abriel, because they learned Dr. Frank Lehmann-Horn of Ulm, Germany (RIP, who had discovered the ion-channel had devoted that last years of his life) along with Dr. Michael Segal of Simulconsult Lab in MA had been working with me for years to keep me alive. I had spent 6 months at Stanford Med in isolation where Drs didn't think they could keep me alive for 48 hours up admission, three months a the Cleveland Clinic in medical housing, four months in a skilled nursing home where I was given no hope of survival: the goal was to get a wonder-drug I finally got her through TGen Labs in Pheonix. But when I had my first serious life threatening emergency in the Mayo ER I was asked if I was on drugs or a drunk after being knocked out cold where I lived in Scottsdale by a bunch of rowdy tenants. It was terrifying. The SDPD did nothing. Nine days later these drug-using, drinking tenants were terrorizing my further, I landed in your ER with a Prolonged QT of near 700 (ATS PP) and this time I was asked if I was on "drugs" told "typical of drug user' ( zero history). When I made a comment to the doctor in alarm he said, "That's it! You're on a hold!" in a life-threatening cardiac moment I could have died, I was profiled as Psyche. Dr Micheal Segal later asked if it was "Soviet Psychiatry" as a Dr. Todd Levine said, "No one has two rare diseases as they took a $100Million dollar drug from me and stripped me. I recall saying, "I went to finishing school!" as they told me I was a threat to the public. Captain Reede from SDFD would later be stunned to learn I was not treated for a cardiac crisis. My great grandfather Christian A. Herter cofounded the Journal of Biological Medicine, discovered Celiac disease, founded the Journals at John Hopkins, and The Rockefeller Institute of Medicine. My grandmother Mary Dows Herter Norton Crena de Iongh wrote the thesis for the first wound solution to save the lives in WW1 with her step father Henry Drysdale Dakin after my GG father Herter died of the very disease I have. I was called the Dakin Solution. President Wilson ordered them to France, to serve our county, receiving the highest honors from France. My mother Anne Aston Warder Norton died after leaving an ER and was found dead near my boarding school after missing for days. The last two times I was in your ER, Dr. Martini sent me away while I was unable to ambulate telling me to go to the Internet for help. And when I collapsed in my home with Covid, I was sent out unable to walk by another doctor who refused to name my disease but said, "other patients with MG who are upstairs are worse off than you, you'll be fine." She did not bother to see if I could stand or walk. I was recruited by profiler, months on interviews, written questions, requiring clearance by the State Dept by the FBI. I spoke the the Special Agent recently who did my clearance. He remains baffled as I do how no once has understood my disease. As he said, "we have your medical records". Mayo was absolutely amazing with my sister. She was there from 1230am on the 3rd until the 8th and from the minute we were there she had amazing care. They all went above and beyond, not one person was rude or unhappy. Everyone we talked to or met had a smile on their face and were super nice. It made the stay for my sister and my mom better than expected. I used to think that there was nothing worse than getting a disease as a medical provider as a result of the course of my duties. However, this was easily topped when I was told that I would be seen as a patient at the Mayo Clinic only to wait three years and hear nothing. They probably didn't take my insurance, that's fine, I told them I would pay cash, still not good enough. I'll tell you what, if they can't even take care of their own for something that happened on the job as a health care provider, then they are just cruel; and that is the case with Mayo Clinic. My mother still asks every couple of months, "Have you heard from Mayo yet?", "Did you tell them that you would pay cash?" "Why won't they see you?" It's heartbreaking. read more

I phoned The Mayo Clinic a few days after our Son was diagnosed with Liver Disease. I was told they Do Not take any Medicare Advantage Plan. It was suggested that we cancel that plan and switch to Regular Medicare as soon as possible. They warned me that some companies could make us wait until the beginning of the New Year. I was also told that the costs of co-pays could be prohibitive for most people. So they prefer that you sign up for a Medicare Supplement before signing up with them. I immediately phoned three different Insurance Companies. All three confirmed that it was illegal to purchase a Supplement for our Son in Arizona. We searched this ourselves online, and sure enough Arizona is one of the few States that have this requirement. You would think a Mayo Clinic located in Arizona would have known this. read more

Yes, Mayo is a great hospital BUT even great hospitals make mistakes, in our case, a big one. The removal of my husband's PROSTATE included one lymph node that the cancer spread to. They removed his cancerous prostate and 31 other lymph nodes but not the one and only node that had the cancer!! Really? And when the surgeon was questioned by my husband (the patient and a medical Dr himself) his excuse was "well it was deeper and the robotics didn't mark it for removal. My comments are linked to years of working in the health care industry, having been trained as an Operating Room Technician at one of the world's leading and most prestigious hospitals. First of all, Mayo has an excellent surgical staff. Finest kind. Their reputation isn't built on advertising and marketing. There's a very fine line between the duties the nursing staff has and getting the job done -- and how those deputies are accomplished. I understand from long professional experience that patients and visitors can be very obtuse, much too self-centered, and absolutely unaware of anything but themselves. That said, I encountered very rude nurses at the hospital, rudeness and bullying in excess and far beyond what was necessary to accomplish their duties. A little firmness, coupled with tact and diplomacy goes a long way -- and of the two choices (being outright nasty and being professional), many of the nursing staff chose the wrong approach... and it is VERY disappointing. I get it: patients and visitors aren't exactly at their best, especially where a patient has an extensive, significant surgery. Having significant pain is hard on patients, and nurses become inured to it. In such a case, it helps a patient if they are given a word of encouragement to comfort them: same applies to visitors. Rudeness makes an already significant medical crisis traumatic, and I have never seen such an egregious lack of professionalism ever, I recognize that the nursing staff has to be very controlling to accomplish their duties, but if they can't be pleasant, they can at least be diplomatic and/or tactful -- or, as my partner frequently reminds me, be kind. Worried family members don't respond well to over-controlling, rude bullies. Oh, one other thing: when the workload is high, having a hallway water-cooler confab of a gaggle of nurses -- gaily yakking about some party or concert (whatever it was) is very annoying, and highly unprofessional: save it for the locker room. Having to maneuver between patients being moved and a knot of four or five chatting nursing staff members is not conducive to safety OR tranquility. Laughter is good, but there's a reasonable place and time for it: neglecting patients in the Recovery Room just isn't either. A team's reputation is earned and built each and every day. Sadly, it is disheartening to see this behavior in a once-prestigious hospital. P.S. Mayo, your WiFi sucks. Getting word out to family and friends is horrible. read more

In summary, Mayo is excellent at marketing itself, good at billing, just average in providing medical care, and very poor at customer service. Mayo is very good at promoting itself as being a premier medical provider without providing any believable evidence to support that claim. Rather, based on my experience and that of others I have spoken with, its medical services are simply average. In terms of medical care, like most hospital networks, it provides a range of quality from very good to very poor. It simply depends who you get. However, through its excellent marketing and public relations, it seems to have convinced the public that it are superior to others. Something else it is good at: one stop billing. The customer / patient does not get separate invoices from various departments for services performed at the same time. For example, following a surgery one bill arrives for the hospital, the doctors, the anesthesia, etc. When it comes to customer service, Mayo completely fails. It sends frequent emails to log into their difficult portal to read a message that more often than not is a complete waste of time. It repeatedly asks the same questions, such as the patient's medication list, allergies, and medical history. Finally, based on my experience, Mayo does not value its customers / patients. It assigns a client number to each patient and does not treat patients respectfully on a personal level. Overall, I give Mayo a below average grade. read more

Dr. Lettieri is a brilliant surgeon! My son was born with a deformity that affected every aspect of his life. It has been difficult for him to lead a "normal" life but as his 23rd birthday approached, Dr. Lettieri gave him a wonderful gift -- the gift of symmetry! I have not seen my son THIS happy since he was a very small child. We are eternally grateful to have found such a dedicated and compassionate doctor. Dealt with T'Nita Walker the last 2 weeks. She was a manager overseeing the Medallion program. Had a horrible experience with the discriminating staff of the Medallion program. She was to investigate the discrimination that I experienced there. Told me she would get back to me in a week. Calls me after a week to inform she has been too busy and needed another week to look into my case. I felt she thought my issue wasn't a big deal because of me being a white male. After the second week, she gets back to me to inform me that Medallion will not redact the letter they sent me. This medallion department is discriminatory and the patient is the least of their care. read more

I Have never had a Co-Pay for a CT scan until the Mayo Clinic got a hold of my pocket book. I am a cancer patient and have been to every CT scanner in the Valley. Mayo is the only one that charges!!! That's not all! Their Doctors laughed in my face when I asked them about possible cures for my condition. They laughed at me!!!! And now they want to hit my pocket book! I just had a urology procedure involving a partial removal of the prostate and removal of a large bladder stone that sent met to the emergency room at Mayo. I was handled with care beyond my expectations thoughout. When i went to the emegency room with a blocked urinary tract, they wheeled me in within 5 minutes and had a catheter in within 20 minutes and drained TWO LITERS of urine. I was then set up for applointment about two months later to inspect inside the bladder. I didn't like the long wait, but they provided me with self catheter tubes in case it blocked again, and trained me on how to use them, so not a big deal. I did use them several times with no problem. Then about a week later they did surgery with a laser to remove the stone and took out some of the mildly enlarged prostate at the same time. Despite having to wait for the surgery, (except for the ER, which was very fast) I was very impressed with their attention to detail and totally excellent care. Only if I move out of town would I ever go anywhere else. read more
