It's a local bar cafe, catering to the sports type people, along with pool tables and TVs all around. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food and selection. Note, we are not bar type people. It was their menu online that led us there. After being seated at a table of our choice, we were waited on quickly for drinks. Gave us time to look at the menu, although looking at it online, we knew what we wanted for dinner. I had the pick & peel shrimp with cocktail sauce, along with a small salad, with vinegar and balsamic dressing on the side. Husband had the fried shrimp and tots. Plates were delivered in a timely fashion. Both the fried shrimp and pick and peel shrimp were delicious. Nice proportions, ample tray of tots, and the salad had fresh ingredients. The vibe was a bit off when I got there and not sure if the Friday night I went the security and staff most were just tired but there was not too much enthusiasm present and the service felt more like they felt obligated to give it against their will. Not just a bar! Tried this place based upon menu selections. Wife had chicken and shrimp salad and I had chicken Troiano. Wow! Salad FRESH and tasty! The chicken sandwich.... Right out of old South Philly!! OMG a REAL grilled breast of chicken with roasted peppers and mozzarella..... YUMM! Service is a lil slow but otherwise DEFINITELY a place to chill out grab a brew and something to eat. Yo! Prices that you can still send your kids to summer camp! Great Dive Bar Spot. Big room with a wrap around bar seating maybe 20-25 people. AMI Jukebox w/ 2 pool tables for entertainment. Bartender made a great Cosmo & beers were cold. Food was surprisingly good actually. Like above average dive bar food. Burger was cooked medium rare just perfectly. Bacon jam was delicious on it. The chicken wrap we subbed out the bacon jam for chipotle Mayo w/ sweet potato fries on the side. Highly recommend doing that, it is a great sandwich. I came to see the fabulous, Frankie and The Flatliners band. Great music, and great crowd! Maynard's is a popular bar/restaurant in Margate. It was hoppin'! I loved that they're pet friendly! I held my first (female - always red) Eclectus, one of my "dream birds!" I was in heaven! I had a shrimp Caesar salad, that was very good - I appreciated the dressing not being over bearing, like at some restaurants. Our server, Devin, was on point, and so sweet. The atmosphere is cool and drinks are good price but the service is atrocious. The literal worst bar tending I've ever seen. 3 older women moving slow as can be and just skip over people who have been waiting and they often forget your order. They are rude as can be and the bar backs need a better route than to just push people around to get front bar to bar. The girl I was with the pushed by the bar back into a table. Staff is truly terrible and I hope management changes. I do enjoy hanging out at Maynard's but the service is less than desirable. read more

Came here with a large group (20+) to hear a band, Mas Tequila Orchestra, play. It was the Sunday night before Labor Day. We came early and were able to score a few tables close to each other for most of the group. Service was helpful in adding more chairs. Overall service was excellent despite the place filling up continuously. The food looked good- I saw cheesesteaks, chicken cheesesteaks, and quesadillas go by. I would normally order something like that or a burger in a place like this. Low risk. I went out on a limb and ordered the crab Mac and cheese. O-M-G! Death row meal worthy!!! It was excellent. Creamy. Hunks of crab. Perfectly done pasta. Never saw that coming.... We also got the sweet potato fries which were waffle cut. They were good. I was the designated driver, so I did not try any drinks. Service was great keeping my water refilled. The music was awesome! Worth the trip! The clientele is mostly young. Very, very casual. That night it was warm and the gnats were having a field day. At some point, someone produced a can of OFF and it worked miracles. My friend said the bathroom was gross. I would not even attempt such a visit. This is a 3.5. I hear with the food, some items are better than others, but my dish was delish! Don't let the outside of the building fool you... this establishment has been in business since 1966, and is a legendary business. My first time dining here was in the early 2000s and, for the most part, it has remained relatively unchanged, with a few subtle additions along the way. I usually eat in their outdoor section (known as the Srarlite Garden) during the summer. This is not a bad place to hang out with friends and watch the game. They have all the traditional favorites: wings, burgers, sandwiches, tacos, and bites. There are also a plethora of drink specials year round. A few things to note: it can get busy, especially during peak season during the dinner hour. If you go on trivia night, be sure to get there early or see if you can make reservations in advance, especially if you plan on having a crowd. Also, their website and social media do not post their specials or live entertainment... which, as a local, is kind of a bummer, because that is something you would want to know about. But, that's just me. Overall, I have very little to complain about this place. The only other thing I would say is that the fries should be a tad warmer. Outside of that... it's your typical bar atmosphere with a decent selection of food and drink. read more

My dad and I wanted to grab a drink and a late lunch after the beach around 3pm on Sunday July 14th. I have been always wanting to try Maynard's and thought this would be a great time to do it. I have worked in the restaurant industry my entire life, so I can't believe I'm even writing a review like this, but we were so severely disappointed with the service that I thought we needed to let others know. We were seated by a hostess outside and waited about ten minutes before I asked the hostess who our server was. Meanwhile, we watched SIX servers either leaning up against the wall talking to each other or sitting down openly texting and using their phones during that time. The hostess actually ROLLED HER EYES at me when I asked her about our server. They clearly were not busy and those six people had nothing going on - someone could have come over to take our drink order. After the hostess rolled her eyes at us after asking for service with six able people standing around when they were not busy and fifteen minutes had gone by at that point, she just walked away. My dad and I were so disgusted that we just got up and left. First time and last time that I will ever walk into Maynard's Cafe. Stay away - you're not missing anything special with the service there. read more

Ah, Maynards. One of Margate's legendary institutions. Situated along a stretch of bay front nicknamed the "Barbary Coast", it was originally one of the 'dive bars' that locals and shoobies alike frequented. Over the years, they've added a summer feature - the "Starliite Garden". In its' early years, this was simply a bunch of tables made from recovered cable spindles with plastic chairs, tableware, and servers running food out from the inside bar. Supplies were stored in two shipping crates at the rear of the lot. We all joked that it could be packed up and made to disappear in 30 minutes should the health inspector come by. Over the years it's gotten more and more legitimate, such that now they even advertise it's presence, have permanent outside bars and kitchen. Gone are the cable spindle tables, replaced by bona fide plastic tables and chairs. For a few dishes you get actual dishes and silverware, otherwise it's still paper plates and plasticware. It's a popular spot, and on a recent Friday night the Rev. Dr. Steak and I found ourselves waiting for a table, listening to the local band do Jimmy Buffett and Van Morrison Covers (Quick: How do you tell the cover band is from Philly? "I got my toes in da wuuuddderr....") while kids danced, parents and grandparents clapped, and really drunk forty something and fifty somethings on the prowl raised their hands and sang off tune. Very loud place with the band playing, not an intimate-romantic conversation place at all. However, the loudness was all the good time, and the place had the atmosphere of one giant beach party. We were seated reasonably quickly by a spunky hostess and our server came quickly. We ordered burgers, fries, iced teas. No problem. Teas were oddly sweetened, not southern sweet tea, not quite peach. Not awful, but not expected. Served in plastic cups. Burgers were delish, fries were very good. People-watching was superb. $24 before tip, not bad for a Friday night on the coast. Cash only. It's one of our 'regular' places at the beach and it has yet to disappoint. read more

If you're 27 and older... definitely don't recommend this place. I walked in the bar and walked to trash everywhere on the ground; I pretty much gave up that my shoes would be dirty by the time I walked out. The place is mobbed, barely can have a conversation or dance. The bartenders were all sweating their butts off and running around with no method to their madness. The bathroom... I can't even explain to you how disgusting it was. If you're 21 and single this is the place for you. If you're my age just trying to drink at a nice outside bar with good music with some friends, probably not going to recommend. read more

This is a Great place to get a beer or maybe 10. A hidden treat is the cheesesteak Quesadilla. It's really good. I order mine with fried onions. Very very good. Wings, burgers and nacho are all good bucks as well. There is also a "Low County Chicken sandwich" that I like a lot. read more

Very pleasantly surprised in this spot. We took our son to the Island Watersports park down the street and stopped at Maynard's for lunch. It looks like a typical corner bar, which it is... but the food was surprisingly above par. My son got chicken fingers (his go to pick) and raved about them. I got a salad with chicken and it was very good. My husband, who NEVER raves about anything, actually said that he was impressed. The iconic Maynard's, wow, I am finally sitting in Manyards. So just about everyone I know has been here and has made some solid Shore memories. It reminds me of a favorite hat you might have had for many years. You love the hat, it is well worn, a little beat up, but still looks good and has seen so many adventures and good times that you proudly wear it and continue the tradition. There are definitely some fancier places in Margate; this place is for the every man. I could compare it to the OD in Sea Isle, or LaCosta, but it just isn't. It is classier in an intangible way. It is hard to describe, it just is. The outside looks fun for the warmer months, you are right across from the bay, the inside has pool tables and a huge bar. It is for utilitarian drinking down near the water. The bartenders are great, Julie and Michelle, the beer is cold, and priced well. I did not have anything to eat, but the general atmosphere is a place in which I could see myself spending a lot of time. My cousin and his wife, Bill and Sarah T, were unofficially honored with the title of customers of the year. This is their go to place all summer. Bill and Sarah know a good time when they see one, and even though I have not yet experienced the full measure of the summer fun in this place, Bill and Sarah do not waste their free time or money on anything that is not top notch. Maynards is a 5 star place. It is not Tomatos, nor Sophia's, it is Maynards, and it is everything it claims to be, an iconic and timeless meeting place for families and shore revelers. read more

I honestly wish I could rate them 0 stars. It was 4th of July night at 2:30 ish and it was a storm and they kicked us out into the pouring rain. So disrespectful especially after the amount of tip money that was given to each bartender. I used to work a bar job and customer service was my most important thing to worry about for tips and they completely blew it. Like how disrespectful is it to leave 5 girls out in the rain I can understand the guys but the girls, so ridiculous. Like be courteous and understanding all they care about is your tip money. So so so sad. I'll never be coming back even though thousands will be supporting their business because it's easy to get into and the drinks are cheap but just know that people will be getting into this business underage. Went here to have a fun night out with friends. Had such a bad experience I'm actually putting in the effort to write my first yelp review. TL;DR very racist and even ruder bartender who turned out to be the owner. DO NOT give them your money I was waiting at the bar to order some drinks for me and my friends. The bar was very crowded, I will say that. I'm not the type of person who calls to the bartender to get their attention because I think it's rude, so I continued waiting while she served other people. What many bartenders don't realize is that as a black guy, I'm often overlooked while waiting at a bar. Some of it I'm sure is that I don't draw the attention in a darker room, so I was being patient. Eventually, after waiting 10 minutes, a two girls came up to my right after the person in front of them left. They were immediately served. In response I said to the bartender "really? I've been waiting here for 10 minutes." To which she replies, "you have NOT been waiting here for ten minutes. I'll serve you after them." Then I turned to the girl to confirm that they just got to the bar and I wasn't making things up to which she said "yes we just got here. That's pretty messed up." While talking to the girl, her friend was ordering a drink and the bartender then said "I can't here you over this guy yapping his trap" and then I turned to her and she said "SHUT YOUR MOUTH" I was honestly appalled at the behavior that a bartender would show a patron of a supposed business (then even more appalled to find out she's the owner). She then served everyone else around me while ignoring me and proceeded to get security to tell me to go to another bar. I then went to a different bar in the restaurant because I still wanted my friends to have fun and I didn't want to put a downer on the night, but my friends were very upset for me and wanted to leave. I convinced them to stay and just have fun in a different section because they were all looking forward to going out. After withdrawing cash to go to the cash only bar, my friend went to ask the bartender what happened (and of course the bartender saw her and immediately asked her what drink she wanted with no wait time). When my friend said that what happened was really not okay, the owner's response was "it's not racist, that's why I sent my black security guard to escort him elsewhere." She then sent the same security guard to tell us we have to leave the bar. The only nice part about the experience is how understanding and calm (probably because this is 1 of many times this has happened) the security guard was about the situation. We will not be returning, and I would suggest anyone who doesn't want to give business to a rude, racist business owner shouldn't either. This experience was so traumatic that I'm considering escalating it as it was a very clear example of discrimination. If only the bartender knew that she was showing Jim Crow type behavior to someone very involved with NAACP and other civil rights groups. read more

came here on a Saturday night for some pitchers and light snacks with my husband, my cousin and her husband. The guys can drink a good bit, and it was $6 pitchers, so that can't be beat, and Maynard's get some stars. but the light snacks we got shouldn't even be classified as light. They were more like what you scrape together from the bottom of the pile when you're running out at the end of the night. My husband and I got shore fries, which for those who are from the Philadelphia area, are a sad sad version of chickies and Pete's crab fries. it came in a sad paper container that looked like it had two handfuls of crinkle cut frozen fries in it. This was $5. Then we got fried pickles... or correction, fries pickle. They took one dill pickle, cut it into quarters, fried them, and then charged us $7 for these 4 fried pickle quarters. My grapefruit crushes (similar to orange crush you get at Delaware beaches) were $7 each. I would've rather gotten another beverage than that sorry excuse for a "starter". read more

I loved the crab cake here so much, we made a point to come back on our next trip to the shore! They have an abundance of our door seating! They allow dogs which lead to most of my dinner entertainment...so cute! My only concern was our server didn't seem to understand the CDC guidelines. She occasionally moved her mask to speak, was way too close for comfort and even touched my arm (in a completely friendly way and under normal circumstances I wouldn't have given it a second thought). I do feel that it's a bit over price for the overall food quality but it's the shore so everything is marked up. Again, the crabcake was amazing...has real big chucks of crab- that was worth it! My BFs chicken cheesesteak was good but meek and the fries were good but not the best fries I've ever had. Overall, good experience and would still go back for that crabcake. read more

I waited for 17 minutes between sitting & being asked what I wanted..but in reality no one asked what I wanted until my boyfriend came up. Apparently a 26 yr old woman cannot order for herself. Women got a double whammy at the bathrooms when we ran out of toilet paper & luckily a fellow male patron passed some on. Otherwise no one "in charge" was helping. Horrible way to treat customers. Bouncer was incredibly rude. I came with my family witch included myself, my husband and two daughters. The bouncer wanted to see my daughters ID which we gave him. He insisted it was not real and bent it in half. Then he refused to give it back. I was just about to call the police on him to demand the return of my daughters license. But he decided to return it. Not sure why the bouncer thinks he is the police he's really just a nobody and a rude nobody to say the least. I will never again come to an establishment that damages other properties. This review is based off my second visit to Maynard's. The first was not very good, but it was about a year ago now and a very forgettable experience. I feel the need to walk you through this visit moment by moment to emphasize all that went wrong. My four person party arrived around 9ish on a Wednesday and the place was not very busy. We were greeted by no less than 6 grumpy bouncers lacking basic social skills waiting at the main entrance. It was very intimidating and probably scares a lot of people away. Unfortunately my 31 year old brother forgot his ID so the bouncer crew deliberated for about 2 minutes before concluding my brother could go in for dinner but could not order drinks. That was understandable I suppose. Then master bouncer gave my cousin and her boyfriend some shit about their Georgie ID. He thought it was funny. We walked in and took our seats. Less than one minute later our waitress arrived with master bouncer. Master bouncer very rudely placed his hand on my shoulder and told waitress that I could not order any drinks. I explained I actually had my ID, he was mistaken, and that it was actually my older brother who forgot his ID. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised that the situation wasn't handled more professionally. By the time we had placed our order, my party had been eaten alive by the bugs, most likely emanating from the abundance of visible large disgusting looking trash cans surrounding our table in every direction. We asked the waitress if we could move inside. Looking back, there was something in her facial expression and tone of voice that I didn't quite pick up on saying "That might not be a good idea". She walked us to the inside bar area. As we breached the door and entered the bar, the stench of vomit, sweat, and spilled beer cleaned up with dirty mop water permeated the dank air. There was an additional bouncer and 3 patrons, one of which was a drunken buffoon with a compromised equilibrium, and another was his embarrassed girlfriend shaking her head in shame. There were physically no seats at the bar tops, so the waitress pulled up stools from the bar. It seemed very strange to me that anybody would enjoy drinking here with no opportunity to sit. I went to the bathroom. The men's room was not marked in any way. I took my best guess as being the door next to the one marked "W", and I was correct. The bathroom is best described as "memorable". Probably the nastiest trough style urinal I've ever seen. After finishing up in the bathroom my party had asked to move out of the cave-like bar and back outside because of the stench. The waitress was nice about it. While waiting for our food we observed the propaganda left by beer and alcohol promoters which decorated the area in every direction. Our food arrived. 30 wings and four sandwiches. The wings were good and they had a bunch of different flavors. I polled my party on how we liked the sandwiches and the consensus was "not terrible". We felt dirty after eating. I was the only one that didn't upgrade my chips to fries, and I received a bag of Lays next to my sandwich. We ate, paid, and left as quickly as possible. Been to Margate a couple times now and each weekend involves several stops here. At night it's a super fun (albeit) crowded bar, however it's also awesome for breakfast. My most recent visit I had a specialty omelet which featured cream cheese, fried onions hot peppers and pork roll. It was absolutely amazing, one of the more unique and well executed egg dishes I've had. Beer and drink selections are awesome and their drink specials are tough to beat in the area. It's obvious why this place is a mainstay in the area and will continue to be one. read more

Nice place but there was only one server outside (surprised since the event had a decent sized crowd) and he never came to our table. We had to go to bar to order a drink and we weren't able to order any food. The menu looked decent enough for some bar food but we won't know what it tasted like because there was no service. METHINKS NOT! My girlfriend and I went to Maynard's for some drinks and a good time, but ended up receiving sexist remarks from one of the bouncers. My girlfriend was sitting elegantly on one of the high-chairs in the outside area, when one of the stout bouncers strutted up to us and said, "You know in your heart that's wrong, right? Like you know this is messed up?" This seemed like a severe opening for a girl merely sitting on a high-chair. But the bouncer then turned to me, her boyfriend, and said, "YOU should know better, man. I'd think you'd know better." Sexism is clearly implicit in this question, so I responded, "Why should I know better than her?" To this, the bouncer tried to give an intimidating look, then walked away. He knew he was wrong.
