While traveling from Alamogordo to Carlsbad we were unfamiliar with this stretch of the Mountains so we tried having breakfast in nearby Cloudcroft but nothing appeared open so we ended up at the Mayhill Cafe. What a find this place was. First of all it's a very quaint little town surrounded by a beautiful stretch of mountains with a beautiful little park across the street. We ordered the Huevos Rancheros & the Breakfast burrito. Both were terrific with nice sized portions. Our server was very perky and did an outstanding job of taking care of us ( I wish I remembered her name because she really was terrific ) If we would have known of this place we would have also stayed in the hotel which is attached to the restaurant. The Mayhill Cafe is 5 stars from start to finish. We absolutely loved this place!

Sweet salsa??? Noo! Cold beans no!! Terrible rice? Go to Nina's or La Fonda in Artesia to learn how to make the rice. Good enchiladas tho

You need to have a six foot bronze cheeseburger placed in front of the Mayhill Cafe and Hotel.

If you are visiting White Sands National Park and looking for a clean, comfortable place to stay in Alamogordo, this is an excellent choice. The motel is a family-owned property, and the hospitality from the owners was exceptional. From the moment we arrived, they were warm, welcoming, and genuinely kind. You can immediately tell they take great pride in their motel and care about the experience their guests have. The room and entire property were immaculately clean--honestly cleaner than many larger chain hotels we've stayed in. Everything looked freshly painted, well-maintained, and thoughtfully cared for. The landscaping and exterior were also beautifully kept, which made the whole place feel inviting and safe. What makes the White Sands Motel special is the personal touch you only get from a locally owned, family-run motel. Instead of the impersonal feel of big hotels, you feel like a valued guest here. If you're planning a trip to White Sands National Park, Alamogordo, or southern New Mexico, I highly recommend staying here. It's a fantastic family-owned motel in Alamogordo that offers spotless rooms, great hospitality, and a truly pleasant experience. We will absolutely stay here again on our next trip to White Sands National Park

Two families stayed in one cabin and had anything you could ever want in a home away from home. We arrived late in the night, and everything was ready for us upon arrival, the place was warm, clean, and welcoming. The place was outfitted, and had anything you could ever imagine in a furnished cabin (internet, cable, dishes, personal heaters for each room, etc.). No, the place isn't nestled in Old Town, but you are not far from there. Very close to other eateries well worth visiting. Not too far from your local ski slopes, and other tourist sites down the mountain. Karl was an excellent host. He checked in on us all the time, and made sure that we weren't ever without. The kitchenette has everything you would want to prepare your own meals, or you can take advantage of all the local restaurants. Karl and Laura are solicitous, generous, attentive, and so kind. I can't forget to include Rascal, the sweetest kitten I've ever met!! My husband and I felt welcomed and at peace. Family friendly but also romantic for couples! We extended our stay because we weren't ready to leave after three nights! A days drive from Central Texas, so we will definitely be back. I think we've found our home away from home! We went on three gorgeous hikes each day, all within 15 minutes drive.

However, it was a goal to check out the lodge so that I could attest to others on its history. Emily at the front desk was so nice as well as the manager. They allowed me to walk the hotel, have coffee and cookies, take in the historic site and relax. I asked could I see one of the rooms since online the pictures were great and they have kept the original look and feel. the manager said he had step better than a standard room. He handed me a key to look at the Governors suite (see video). I returned the next day after hiking to have lunch and peruse the gift shop. Prices are a little higher, however the food is pretty amazing. I split a burger and chips. Food is great in the bar area. Dinning opens in evening but requires reservations. Pets are allowed for Small fee There is a golf course across the parking lot. Majestic views and well kept greens. don't be surprised but if you find yourself golfing around the deer, elk or wild horses. If you're lucky, you may see snow which makes all that much more beautiful. There is rich history of the lodge hanging in the walls and in areas to read upon. This used to be timber country and the original lodge burned down years and years and years ago. While at the Lodge check out Cloudcroft museum to take in all the history that included the Lodge, baby sanatorium and 1st Calvary visits, where it all started this beautifully small town.

This hostel offers a unique and authentic experience for this region and encourages you to get outside, explore, and connect with yourself and nature! And if you're traveling here, that's EXACTLY what you need to do. First off - Stephanie is a gracious host and makes you feel right at home :) Her positive energy makes her highly approachable and that same energy permeates the hostel. She makes herself available to her guests but also gives you space if you're looking for solitude. The rooms are simple but have everything you need. I stayed in a private room with a comfortable queen-sized mattress. It gets pretty cold at night but the heater inside the room made it warm and cozy! The rooms have two access points. One door leads outside to the deck, where you have chairs and a stunning view of the mountains. A second door leads into the shared areas - a full kitchen with cookware to make your own meals, a comfortable living room with plenty of books and a TV (with Netflix) if you absolutely need it, and bathrooms with showers and a few complimentary toiletries. Everything is very clean and well-taken care of and it was fun getting to know the other guests! We had a campfire on Saturday night (a weekly ritual, I believe - weather permitting) and cooked some delicious food on a grill. You can't beat a campfire dinner, complete with s'mores, underneath the stars. Some locals even came by and shared their knowledge and stories about the area! Because it's elk mating season, the males could be heard bugling for a mate at night. If you're really lucky, you might even see some elk wandering around the property! A herd of females showed up one night while I was there - right outside of my room, in fact! But because it was 3:30 a.m. and I'm a heavy sleeper, I had to settle for security camera footage the next day, haha! That's important to note, too. The property has security cameras and plenty of lights so I felt extremely safe the entire week I was there. Stephanie lives upstairs and has two dogs (and a cat!) that will alert you of any strangers (and wildlife). The dogs are really friendly - and smart! They don't seem to bark once they recognize you! What else can I say about this GEM in the mountains... the location is perfect and easy to get to. There's SO much to do here, you'll forget all about any TV or technology addiction you may have had at home (there IS free Wi-Fi if you need it, though). The village of Cloudcroft is only 10 minutes up the mountain, Mountain Park and High Rolls are 5 minutes down the mountain, and Alamogordo is 15-20 minutes away and at the bottom of the mountain. There are plenty of unique shops and cafes to check out, as well as bigger chains to fulfill more extensive needs (those are in Alamogordo). And let's not forget White Sands National Monument, which is about 30 minutes away. White Sands is absolutely breathtaking and Stephanie even has snow saucers you can borrow, to go sand sledding on the dunes! If it's hiking you're looking for, you've got countless options throughout the Lincoln National Forest. You can even hike up into the mountains behind the hostel. I could probably go on forever about this place but at some point, you're going to stop reading this review because I rambled on for far too long. If you're still with me, thank you for indulging my love affair with the Cloudcroft Mountain Park Hostel :) Honestly, I was sad to leave and I absolutely cannot wait to return. I've never seen skies so blue, sunsets with such vivid shades of pink and orange, and mountain backdrops so perfect they almost don't look real. There's magic in the air that makes you grateful to be alive. And if you're willing to slow down and enjoy each moment as they come, you'll experience more peace, beauty, and connection than you ever thought possible.
