I travel a lot and have been to some amazing resorts and hotels, but I can honestly say that my stay at the Cloudcroft Mountain Park Hostel was one of my favorites! This hostel offers a unique and authentic experience for this region and encourages you to get outside, explore, and connect with yourself and nature! And if you're traveling here, that's EXACTLY what you need to do. First off - Stephanie is a gracious host and makes you feel right at home :) Her positive energy makes her highly approachable and that same energy permeates the hostel. She makes herself available to her guests but also gives you space if you're looking for solitude.
The rooms are simple but have everything you need. I stayed in a private room with a comfortable queen-sized mattress. It gets pretty cold at night but the heater inside the room made it warm and cozy! The rooms have two access points. One door leads outside to the deck, where you have chairs and a stunning view of the mountains. A second door leads into the shared areas - a full kitchen with cookware to make your own meals, a comfortable living room with plenty of books and a TV (with Netflix) if you absolutely need it, and bathrooms with showers and a few complimentary toiletries. Everything is very clean and well-taken care of and it was fun getting to know the other guests! We had a campfire on Saturday night (a weekly ritual, I believe - weather permitting) and cooked some delicious food on a grill. You can't beat a campfire dinner, complete with s'mores, underneath the stars. Some locals even came by and shared their knowledge and stories about the area!
Because it's elk mating season, the males could be heard bugling for a mate at night. If you're really lucky, you might even see some elk wandering around the property! A herd of females showed up one night while I was there - right outside of my room, in fact! But because it was 3:30 a.m. and I'm a heavy sleeper, I had to settle for security camera footage the next day, haha! That's important to note, too. The property has security cameras and plenty of lights so I felt extremely safe the entire week I was there. Stephanie lives upstairs and has two dogs (and a cat!) that will alert you of any strangers (and wildlife). The dogs are really friendly - and smart! They don't seem to bark once they recognize you!
What else can I say about this GEM in the mountains... the location is perfect and easy to get to. There's SO much to do here, you'll forget all about any TV or technology addiction you may have had at home (there IS free Wi-Fi if you need it, though). The village of Cloudcroft is only 10 minutes up the mountain, Mountain Park and High Rolls are 5 minutes down the mountain, and Alamogordo is 15-20 minutes away and at the bottom of the mountain. There are plenty of unique shops and cafes to check out, as well as bigger chains to fulfill more extensive needs (those are in Alamogordo). And let's not forget White Sands National Monument, which is about 30 minutes away. White Sands is absolutely breathtaking and Stephanie even has snow saucers you can borrow, to go sand sledding on the dunes! If it's hiking you're looking for, you've got countless options throughout the Lincoln National Forest. You can even hike up into the mountains behind the hostel.
I could probably go on forever about this place but at some point, you're going to stop reading this review because I rambled on for far too long. If you're still with me, thank you for indulging my love affair with the Cloudcroft Mountain Park Hostel :) Honestly, I was sad to leave and I absolutely cannot wait to return. I've never seen skies so blue, sunsets with such vivid shades of pink and orange, and mountain backdrops so perfect they almost don't look real. There's magic in the air that makes you grateful to be alive. And if you're willing to slow down and enjoy each moment as they come, you'll experience more peace, beauty, and connection than you ever thought possible. read more
