Love love love this place! The food, the vibes, and beer, and the music events have all been excellent. Whenever my bf and I are at a loss of what to do on a Friday or Saturday night, we never regret coming here to get fish tacos, some brews, and listen to local bands. It's always upbeat here and if you don't want to listen to live music you can chill downstairs at the bar or in the larger dining room. The staff are super friendly and attentive, the food is great (menu selections rotate but there are mainstays that are consistent), and I am so impressed with their beer variety. We just tried the tamales last week and Mayan Monkey's mole was extremely close in flavor to the authentic mole I got while in San Antonio recently. But if you don't want Mexican food they hav plenty of Latin-inspired standard pub classics like burgers, wings, etc.

Met up with some friends to check out the drink selections and food to see how the new spot was doing. Seems to have been a lot of turnover at this location in the past, so hopefully the newest contender is worthy. Nice selection of beer choices on tap, as well as a few cocktails. The margarita hit the spot, as did all of the beer selections. The obligatory order of chips and salsa was a bit on the smaller side, but the chips were freshly fried and had a good seasoning on them. The homemade salsa was nice and thick, with chunks of mango. And definitely had a bite to it. Also started with a couple orders of the corn callejero, which was a take on Elote. Absolutely delicious, and would order again 10/10. From there an order of fish tacos was plentiful, but the fish was not quite what we were expecting. A little heavy on the breading. Our friends both had the tacos pastor, which they said was delicious. Husband is weird, so he ordered a hamburger at a Mexican place. He got the Hueveon Supremo, which is a burger with loads of mozzarella cheese, refried beans, guacamole, pico de gallo, a Friday, and mayo. It was amazing, and blew away most of the burgers that places specializing in burgers serve. The soft roll was the cherry on top. And it comes with thin fries that were cook perfectly. The only dessert item available is a hot chocolate cake. It takes 15 minutes to bake, so keep that in mind. But it's a nice sweet way to cap off a good meal. We're glad to have the monkey in the neighborhood. This one definitely doesn't need to be spanked.

I believe this is Maryland's first and only cervezeria (Latin American brewery) and it did not dissapoint. This is our first time in downtown Gaithersburg which has a good number of Latin American businesses so this is an excellent addition to Montgomery County's craft beer scene. The food we had (tacos, cheese curds, and ceviche) was amazing as was all the beer we tried. The service was fast and friendly and ambiance resembles a bar and grill. The prices are very reasonable as well. We look forward to returning.

(4/5) This Mexican restaurant and brewery was a pleasant surprise! The space has a cozy yet modern vibe with high ceilings, warm lighting, and comfortable booth seating. It's tucked away in the historic part of town, right across from the railway museum, which adds a cool local charm to the experience. The food overall had great flavors. The vegetarian squash taco was the star of the night--fresh, flavorful, and well-seasoned. The tamale, on the other hand, was a little too mild for my taste; the potato mash inside could have used more seasoning and spice to bring it to life. Their fried cheese balls were excellent--crispy outside, gooey inside, and paired nicely with the dipping sauce. Chips and salsa came standard, and while the salsa was okay, it wasn't anything memorable. The drinks deserve a shoutout. Their beers are brewed locally and definitely worth trying--I had one of their drafts and it was crisp, refreshing, and paired perfectly with the meal. Service was friendly and the overall vibe was relaxed. This is the kind of spot where you can hang out for a while over good food and drinks. With just a bit more consistency in some of the dishes, it would be an easy 5-star spot.

Arriving just in time for their first brewed batch of beer, Mayan Monkey is the newest brew pub in Old Town Gaithersburg. Not really knowing what to expect, we came with open minds. Everything was so so good!!! The pretzel came hot and only with cheese - the truest condiment. Don't get at me with that mustard stuff. We got the carne asada and chicken tinga tacos. The carne asada were good, but I was very jealous of my partner's chicken tinga tacos. I treated myself with the chocolate cake desert - best I've had in some time! And their Raku beer was a light and delicious rice lager. The space is still recognizable from past brew pubs, the high ceilings carrying any sort of cheers from the bar to other parts of the restaurant, so up to you if that's a problem or not. Service was great, and we'll definitely make a trip back!

Tried one of their house made craft beers and tacos. It was a bit pricey for what you get but the food and beer were good so I'd probably go back. I wouldn't come here super hungry, but if you want to get some beers with friends and watch sports, it's a pretty solid spot. The waitress was really nice and they seem to have live music on the weekend. There's parking in the back and a bridge that you can take over the train tracks from the garage. It's the kind of area where you wouldn't leave anything visible in your car if you catch my grift. Hopefully in the future the downtown area will get more places to hang out at like this.

We had a great experience today at Mayan Monkey. Our party first shared the queso fundido (delicious). For lunch, I had the chicharon gorditas and the corn callejero. I absolutely loved both of these dishes and would order them again in a heartbeat. For a drink, I tried the horchata which was amazing and the cosmo (made with hibiscus vodka) which was not a traditional cosmo, but in my opinion better. My general thoughts are, I wish the dishes would be a bit larger so you can share (are the dishes meant to be tapas? Or order a dish a person? The corn couldn't be a meal...) Maybe better explain/ re- portion the menu. Also, we're eagerly awaiting trying their beer. They're still waiting for their brewing license. Overall we'd definitely return when the beer is ready to go!

Solid spot for happy hour in Montgomery County! Unfortunately there is no printed menu with happy hour prices but both shareable/small plate food and beer/cocktails were discounted. Highly recommend the nachos and the ceviche! The steak salad (not on HH menu) was also great for the price. On a Wednesday night, the place was pretty empty so will have to come back it in all its glory when it is busy - especially on a night with live music. We love all the locations this restaurant group has so we will definitely be back!

I was pretty excited to try Mayan Monkey, but was disappointed with my first experience. We walked in and met with our friends at the bar. The restaurant and bar, itself, looks amazing. It has a ton of potential. Parking wasn't bad. It is in old town Gaithersburg, but there was plenty of parking in the back when we got there. I ordered the tequila special to try, on the rocks. When I asked for it, and when we asked questions, the bartender seemed confused and just inexperienced. She also did not come off as very personable or made an effort to make sure we were taken care of. My friend ordered a margarita then a mojito. She said that she wasn't pleased with either, but I can't verify, other than I think the lack of experience in the bartender. We ordered food. I got the burger and chips and guac. I will say that I really did enjoy their food. The burger had a bacon jam of some sort and was simple, but delicious. The guacamole was also really good, and the chips were freshly made. One of the servers was really sweet and checked in on us and made sure we were good. Other than her, I think their service could definitely use some work. With proper training, their drinks could also do so much better. Im willing to give another try, maybe go again once they get everything finalized with their brewery licensing.

I coordinated logistics with Melissa, the director of special events, who was professional, attentive, and quick to respond to the many questions I had leading up to our office retreat. Since we were using the boardroom for work on our laptops, we didn't have space to order food, but my colleagues did order beverages. Our server checked on us frequently, refilled our water, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the retreat. My only critique is that the boardroom occasionally got loud due to staff running up and down the stairs or noise from the level above. Melissa suggested in lieu of ordering food during our retreat, to transition into the Speakeasy upstairs afterwards. She connected me with Brian, the general manager, who reserved a table for us and helped coordinate our appetizers pre‑order. I requested that the appetizers be ready at 6 p.m. for our reservation, and they were waiting for us when we arrived. We enjoyed flatbreads, sliders, and charcuterie boards--my favorite was the chicken sliders. We had a lovely time with great food, drinks, company, and excellent service from start to finish.

Aside from that, I liked it and it was a nice change from my usual unhealthy choices lol. For the table, we ordered the bruschetta, crab dip, and brisket sliders. Overall, everything was delicious, the beer was great, the atmosphere was relaxing, and the whole experience was really pleasant.

To stay…read moreby the side of our elderly dog, we are foregoing the experience of dining out, more and more. After we finished eating, she remarked we needed to visit the restaurant sometime. We'll have to look for an opportunity when we are around the dog all day, so she can be on her own for a couple of hours, likely sleeping. Birdsong already is acclaimed. This is much more Thai and Thai American. Like Chinese or Italian cuisine before it, Thai flavors have assimilated to a palate not accustomed to the true strength of the spices. Birdsong is a remedy. They do not offer the pad thai that has become a staple, no longer exotic but to its detriment. (A digression. The history of pad thai, with contested origins, is fascinating. As you delve into these matters, you see how syncretic culture is. You also are exposed to the efforts to fashion a unifying mythology.) We ordered the chicken, the shrimp, the crab fried rice, the papaya salad, and the enhancement. The chicken and the shrimp were quality ingredients, prepared well. Although both proteins were fried, they felt clean. The crab fried rice was one option of many with the rice base. The papaya salad was fresh. The enhancement was radish with "fermented daikon, garlic, red onion, cilantro, palm sugar, and fish sauce scrambled with eggs for a balanced savory and sweet flavor," and the portion was generous: we put it on the rice, then I finished it off in an omelet the next morning. We have traveled to Bangkok. Thai spiciness exceeds what I would endorse, and I love hot dishes. Birdsong was much milder, though with sufficient pepperiness my wife, who does not share my preferences, remarked it was closer to her limit. They will work with you in this respect, and I'm confident I could request something that would test my capabilities. That is, in my book, all positive. The dishes that were mild according to the menu, were mild, but they were flavorful. If you do not like fish sauce, for example, you may not appreciate the offerings, which if they don't have fish sauce have something along those lines. I hope Birdsong fares well.

We were looking forward to eating at Birdsong, which has gotten great reviews. A few friends said…read morethat they went and loved it. But we thought only one of the four dishes we ordered was especially good, I wouldn't order the other three again. The Basil Shrimp - described as "Battered and golden fried" seemed more like tempura. I wouldn't have ordered if I knew. The Tom Yum soup was good, but very pricey at $25. For comparison, a similarly sized, likely an even larger entree Tom Yum soup at Bambu is $14. It had lots of noodles. We were sharing, and asked our server for recommendations- she suggested a second dish with the same noodles. Usually a server points out if diners are ordering two dishes with the same base ingredient (noodles) but our server actually suggested the second one. Seriously? And unfortunately, it was underwhelming, just blah. We left most of it. We got the chocolate crème brûlée, the presentation was very nice, with gilded peanuts on top. The taste was just so so, sweet but not much chocolate flavor. We liked the decor and the atmosphere was nice. We loved the bird mural. Service was mixed. Our server was friendly, but could have been more helpful. First, the recommendation for a second dish with the same noodles was not a good one. We asked if we could share everything, including the soup. We specifically asked if they could put it into bowls for us. They brought two bowls, but we had to wait a while for a spoon to divide it ourselves at the table. She ended up bringing us one of those small soup spoons that you often use for soup at Chinese restaurants. It was around the same size as a regular soup spoon. Apparently they didn't have anything that is more like a ladle, and it was not very useful for portioning out the soup. We thought we'd love this restaurant, but it was a miss for us tonight. Not only that, and this is on us, the only dish with any real nutrition or healthy ingredients was the soup. For one "small plate" appetizer, two entrées and one dessert, the total was just under $100.
